Thanks to Sr. Catherine Hurley, FMA. The Christmas village is put up by Sr. Catherine from the collection of her late brother, Michael Hurley. Michael was very generous to give us joy through this beautiful collection. Please check it out. It is in the northeastern location of our gathering space. Enjoy it and please do not forget to thank Sr. Catherine for her beautiful set-up and please pray for the soul of Michael. o0o The Posadas. The nine-day celebration of the Hispanic community called posadas have started December 16 at 7:00PM. The posadas are an evening of prayer while waiting for the day of Christ’s nativity. The posada is a traditional reenactment of Mary and Joseph looking for an inn in Bethlehem. Since no one took them in, Mary gave birth to the child Jesus in a cavern where animals are sheltered and fed. Posada means inn (lodging). o0o The fourth Sunday of Advent. We come to the final Sunday of Advent. This Sunday invites us to look closer to the celebration of Christ’s birth. The birth of Christ may be proclaimed on the hills and plains. But God’s plan is always beyond man’s understanding. Despite the widespread knowledge of that birth, many were caught unaware that the Messiah will be born to insignificant parents in a little town in Bethlehem. The birth of Jesus happened in an obscure manner. That obscureness evoked a powerful Gospel to the beloved little ones of God. The God of mercy and love has come with power in the little sign who was born on a manger in Bethlehem. Mary sang of the mighty power of God: “He has look with mercy his servant’s lowliness. Holy is his name. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, even as he said to our fathers.” God’s power is humility, mercy, love and service. o0o God looks after the “small”. That consoles me since I am small in stature. I was always teased and the name Zacchaeus was associated to me. One Sunday Mass, when the Gospel was about Zacchaeus, we cannot help but to throw glances to each other and giggle at Mass. There were three of us in the seminary my size. But from among us I was the Zacchaeus. I do not know why I was the one or I can’t remember why. Anyways so the story goes that they tease me incessantly as Zacchaeus. Offended? Not a bit. One time the teasing was so boisterous that we were reprimanded by our superiors. To tone it down or conceal it from the whole seminary, our “class clown” gave the teasing a nickname. He coined the phrase “not spoken” to mean little, short or Zacchaeus. “Not spoken” came from the superiors’ reprimand that we stop such non-sense fun. Thus that Sunday morning at Mass, when the Gospel story about Zacchaeus was read, we were giggling and mouthing the phrase “not spoken”. I don’t mind being “not spoken”. There’s so much advantage being Zacchaeus-like that I have to thank God for. On top of that, I am always reminded that God takes good care of the small. If you are interested in participating, please contact the parish office. 541-926-1449 Jubilee Year of Mercy Fourth Sunday of Advent In proclaiming the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis proclaimed his desire that this Holy Year be “steeped in mercy,” as we disciples “go out to every man and woman,” bringing the “balm of mercy” to “believers and those far away, as a sign that the Kingdom of God is already present in our midst!” (Misericordiae Vultus, 5). In her visitation of Elizabeth, Mary beautifully presents just such an image. Despite the perils of her pregnancy, not to mention her preoccupations as a young unwed mother, Mary instantly, unselfishly, “goes out” of herself, hastening far and over dangerous terrain, to “bring the balm of God’s tender mercy” in assistance rendered to her older relative. Since baptism and the Eucharist have made us, in a way, bearers of the living Christ within as Mary was, such selfless “going out” of ourselves to be of loving service to others in mercy should especially mark our Christmas season this Jubilee Year. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. December 20, 2015 20 de diciembre de 2015 Fourth Sunday of Advent Cuarto Domingo de Adviento TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Many of our most treasured traditions link the liturgy of the church with the hearth of the home. The food on the table at certain feasts and fasts helps to extend the mystery into everyday life. Tonight, for example, many families of Italian heritage, especially those with links to the south of Italy, will settle down to the “Feast of the Seven Fishes,” or La Vigilia. It is a command performance for the whole family, as the saying goes: Natale con I tuui, Pasqua conchi vuoi, or “Christmas with your family, Easter with whomever you wish.” Seven different fish, some say one for each day of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem, others say one for each sacrament, or one for each day of creation, are served. Eel and shrimp, lobster and crab, calamari, pasta with clam sauce, flounder and hake all abound, but most especially baccala, dried salted cod. Why? Many say that it is a way to pay homage to the beasts of the stable who witnessed the holy birth and relinquished their manger to make way for God. Tonight, if someone asks you to “pass the shrimp,” you’ll be able to shed a little light on a menu that is a delicious treasure in our tradition! —Rev. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
