ask that . . . prayers . . . be offered for everyone.
(1Timothy 2:1)
There are many forms of prayer, and as Paul says, they
are all “good and pleasing to God” (1 Timothy 2:3). Let’s
look at two forms of prayer that can help us lead a “quiet and
tranquil life,” even in the midst of today’s rushing, anxious
world (2:2).
One is the Lord’s Prayer. It’s perfect. The Lord’s Prayer
proclaims the truths of our faith—that we were born to know,
love, and serve our Father. It pleads for Jesus to come again
in glory. It teaches us to pray that God’ plan, not ours, will be
fulfilled in our lives and in the world. It asks God for his
grace (“daily bread”) to help us make it through each day. It
begs God for forgiveness and it urges us to forgive. It closes
with a request for protection. The Lord’s Prayer contains all
the ingredients that God wants us to live by.
Another way to pray is through the psalms—as Jesus did.
Read them slowly as you begin your prayer, and agree—both
in your heart and mind—to the words you read. The Psalms
contain both the words God wants to say to us and the words
he wants us to say to him. It’s helpful to enter into the mind
of the psalmist, and you can do that by asking three “R”
questions as you read: Why and how is the psalmist rejoicing,
repenting and requesting?
Great saints like Gregory Nyssa, Hilary, Chrysostom,
Ambrose, and Augustine all preached on the psalms. St.
Jerome also tells us that farmers prayed the psalms while they
ploughed their fields, and workmen sang them in their shops.
For so many people, the psalms provided a kind of spiritual
rhythm to their day. And the same can happen for us. All it
takes is that we learn to pray every day, “lifting up holy
hands” to the Lord (1Timothy 2:8).
“Lord Jesus, give me a heart of prayer. Teach me to stay
close to you as I lift up my heart to your throne.”

ndudablemente, Jesús no disculpaba las prácticas
engañosas; sin embargo, y probablemente para sorpresa
de sus oyentes, usó la parábola del administrador infiel
que leemos hoy como ejemplo de astucia e imaginación.
¿Puede usarse este ejemplo para servir a Dios? La respuesta
es que, en cierta forma, sí.
El Señor desea que seamos buenos administradores de los
bienes del cielo y tengamos la esperanza de ser recibidos un
día en su reino eterno. No obstante, debido a que nadie
conoce el día ni la hora del regreso de Jesús (Marcos 13, 32),
todos debemos preguntarnos: “¿Qué debo hacer y qué puedo
hacer en un caso de urgencia? Si usamos los recursos que
tengamos (dinero, tiempo, contactos, energía) para vivir con
sencillez y ayudar al necesitado, estaremos demostrando que
somos administradores responsables de los tesoros del reino.
El dinero no es una respuesta infalible (Lucas 16,9)
porque no podemos llevarlo al Reino de Dios, con todo,
mientras estemos en la tierra, podemos usarlo, con prudencia,
para atender las necesidades propias y de nuestras familias y
para ayudar a brindar alimento, abrigo y techo a los que no
los tengan. El dinero no es más que uno de los recursos que
podemos usar; también tenemos el tiempo, los talentos, la
oración y la sabiduría que hemos adquirido por la experiencia
personal. Así, imitando al administrador astuto, podemos
recurrir a esas cosas para llevar gente a Cristo; y si para esto
nos preparamos haciendo ciertos planes, sin duda el Señor
guiará nuestros pasos.
Ser cristiano y dedicarse a servir a Dios y al prójimo para
acelerar la venida del reino de los cielos es un oficio práctico
y realista, para el que se requiere pensar con sentido común,
pero actuar con decisión e inteligencia. El Señor no busca
servidores ingenuos que no sepan trabajar arduamente ni
hacer el bien a los demás, sino trabajadores que conozcan las
condiciones del mundo y sean capaces de idear estrategias
eficaces para rechazar la maldad y la corrupción, tanto
internas como externas. Seamos, pues, astutos y sagaces en
los caminos del reino.

enséñanos a ser astutos para tu gloria y bendícenos, Señor,
con prudencia y creatividad, para que sepamos usar los
recursos que tenemos a nuestro alcance para adelantar tu
reino en la tierra.”

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
THE FEAST OF SAINT MATTHEW
Today, Sunday, September 19, our parish family observes the
Feast of St. Matthew, apostle and evangelist, and patron saint
of civil servants, with special readings and prayers at the
11:30am and 1pm (Spanish) Masses. Celebrate our parish
patronal feast day at hospitality receptions in the North
Conference room following all Masses except the 7am Mass. It
is a great opportunity to meet fellow parishioners and friends of
the Cathedral.
Jesus’ calling of Matthew to discipleship, which is the
subject of the Gospel reading for the Feast of St. Matthew set
out below, is depicted in the mural in the west transept of the
Cathedral (shown in part to the right) entitled The Calling of
St. Matthew—take a moment and take a look! In the mural
scene, Christ calls St. Matthew, who appears astounded by
the Master’s words. St. Peter, with his keys, stands to the left
of Christ. On both sides of the central figures are a man and a
woman. The couple on the left looks scornfully at the scene,
while the other stands by in veneration. The setting is a
portico beyond which are the Lake of Galilee and the distant
hills. Above, a choir of six angels offers incense.
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew
sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And
he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his
house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with
Jesus and his disciples. The Pharisees saw this and said to his
disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and
sinners?” He heard this and said, “Those who are well do
not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the
meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not
come to call the righteous but sinners.” (Matthew 9:9-13)

learning about the Catholic faith or thinking about becoming
Catholic, St. Matthew’s offers Inquiry, a casual, ongoing
conversation about the Catholic faith, once a month. Inquiry
is the first step in the process of discerning one’s commitment
to full initiation in the Catholic Church. Inquiry meets on the
second Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the
East Conference Room. A brief overview of the entire adult
initiation process (RCIA), which begins formally in June each
year, can be presented after Inquiry for those who are
interested. The next Inquiry will be held Wednesday, October

La llamada de Jesús a
Mateo al discipulado, el cual es
el tema del Evangelio por la fiesta de San Mateo, se puede
ver en el mural en la parte derecha de la Catedral mirando al
órgano en la parte de arriba y cuyo título es: La llamada de
San Mateo--¡tome un momento y mírelo! En la escena del
mural, Cristo llama a San Mateo, el cual se le ve aturdido por
las palabras del Maestro. San Pedro, con sus llaves, está a la
izquierda de Cristo. En ambos lados de las figuras centrales
están un hombre y una mujer. La pareja de la izquierda, se
ven con desdeño o insolencia en la escena, mientras que la
otra está mirando con veneración. El lugar es un pórtico en
el Lago de Galilea y en la distancia se ve una colina. Arriba,
un coro de seis ángeles ofrecen incienso.
Jesús se fue de su pueblo y vio a un hombre llamado Mateo,
que estaba sentado en el lugar donde cobraba los impuestos
para Roma. Jesús le dijo: “Sígueme”. Entonces, Mateo se
levantó y lo siguió. Sucedió que Jesús estaba comiendo en la
casa y muchos de los que cobraban impuestos para Roma, y
otra gente de mala fama llegaron y se sentaron a la mesa con
Jesús y sus discípulos. Al ver esto, los fariseos preguntaron a

RED MASS AT ST. MATTHEW’S ON OCTOBER 3
The 57th Annual Red Mass will be held at the Cathedral on
Sunday, October 3, at 10am. The John Carroll Society hosts
the Red Mass for its members and guests, including many
government officials with attendant security. It is open to the
public, but attendance by the Society’s members and guests is
very high. If you normally attend the 10am Mass, you may
wish to consider attending another Mass that weekend Please
note that the 8:30am Mass is cancelled that day. If you plan
to attend the Red Mass, please arrive early as the fire marshal
will not allow entry once the Cathedral is filled to capacity.

FAITH IN ACTION
St. Matthew’s Homeless Ministry provides for the material
and spiritual needs of 55-70 homeless adults. The program
operates from 7:30am to 11am on Mondays. Most volunteers
serve every other Monday. We always need new volunteers to
make bag lunches once a month and to serve on Mondays. If
you are interested in helping, contact Fr. Evelio Menjivar at
[email protected] or 202-347-3215 x536.
Clothing donations. If you have new or gently used men’s or
women’s casual clothing (jeans, shorts, belts, t-shirts,
sweaters, sneakers, etc.) to donate or want to purchase items
that are most needed, call the rectory at 202-347-3215 to
make arrangements. Donations will not be accepted at the
door without prior approval. Thank you for your
understanding.
Food donations. If you would like to contribute food (bread,
cheese, lunchmeat, fruit, juice, hard boiled eggs or a breakfast
casserole) for our Homeless Ministry, to be dropped off in the
West Conference Room every other Monday by 7:30am,

VACCINATION SIGN-UP
Even though the Health and Wellness Fair is over, it is not
too late to sign up for the flu and pneumonia vaccinations.
The cost is $25 for flu and $50 for pneumonia vaccines,
which will be administered on Sunday, October 17 from 9am
until12:30pm in the East Conference room. Funds are
available for those who cannot afford this cost. To sign up,

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Dear Friends,
Today, I issued a pastoral letter on the “New Evangelization,” entitled “Disciples of the Lord: Sharing
the Vision” which can be found online at www.adw.org.
What is this “New Evangelization”? It is an invitation to renew our own faith and to invite others who
have become disconnected, whose faith has grown tired, to reconnect and rediscover Christ. Pope Benedict
XVI uses the word “repropose” to describe the New Evangelization.
You and I have heard the Gospel, have been excited by the vision, have come to encounter in the
intimacy of our hearts the Lord Jesus. The excitement that was a part of the early Church as Jesus formed his
followers into his new body remains with us today. Yet, for some who have heard this incredible
proclamation, the message has become stale. The vision has faded. The promises seem empty or unconnected
to their lives. They feel they have heard the message of Christ in the past and are convinced it has no meaning
for them today.
In this pastoral letter, I invite us to stir into flame the embers of the Gospel message and Christ’s love,
first in our own hearts in such a way that we not only grow in our own faith, but we are inspired to invite
others to hear once again, maybe all over again for the first time, the exciting invitation of Jesus: “Come,
follow me.”
Somehow in what we do and how we express our faith, we have to be able to repropose, present all over
again, our belief in Christ and his Gospel for a hearing among those who are convinced that they already know th
faith and that it holds no interest for them. We have to invite them to hear it all over again, this time for the first
time.
To reach those who have become disaffected, we are called to adapt our approach so to effectively
invite and urge an entire generation to find again the uncomplicated, genuine and tangible treasure of
friendship with Jesus.
As the pastoral letter notes, this can start with something small, such as a conversation about
Catholicism with a friend or family member, extending an invitation to Mass or providing simple witnesses
such as blessing ourselves before a meal in a restaurant, offering to pray for someone in need or keeping a
devotional item on our desk at work.
This is a fresh moment for the Church because it is a new moment in our world. You and I know how
important Jesus is to us and how much he means as we try to make sense out of this world. I invite you to
reflect with me on what Jesus means to each of us and then how we can share with others we know so well
this great gift.

BAKE SALE FOR VOCATIONS
Join us in front of the Cathedral on Sunday, September 26
after the 10am, 11:30am and the 1pm Masses for a bake sale
in support of vocations. Run for Vocations is a ministry that
supports vocations by raising funds to assist seminarians with
unanticipated expenses. Laypeople, religious and clergy from
around the Archdiocese of Washington have teamed up to
“Run for Vocations” in the upcoming Marine Corps
Marathon/10K on Sunday, October 31. The St. Matthew’s
Run for Vocations Team has committed to raising at least
$250 per person to support our Archdiocesan seminarians and
we invite you to support this mission by baking and/or buying
home-baked items at the bake sale and also keeping our
seminarians and team members in your prayers. We look
forward to seeing you on September 26. For more

FALL LECTURE AT ST. MATTHEW’S
Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia will deliver the John Carroll
Society Fall Lecture on Tuesday, September 28 at 6:45pm in
the Cathedral. Archbishop Di Noia’s topic for the lecture is
“Why Do Catholics Go to Mass?” Archbishop Di Noia is a
theologian who now serves as Secretary of the Congregation
for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments at
the Vatican. Previously, he held the post of Under-Secretary
at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Before that,
he was director of the Intercultural Forum for Studies in Faith
and Culture at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center and
executive director of the Secretariat for Doctrine and Pastoral
Practices at the U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

THEOLOGICAL REFLECTION
AT ST. MATTHEW’S
Msgr. Peter J. Vaghi, pastor at Church of the Little Flower in
Bethesda MD, resumes his 8-part series of First Thursdays
and First Fridays theological reflections in October. His first
talk will be on Wednesday, October 6, at 6pm (following the
5:30pm Mass) in the East Conference Room. The title for the
reflection is "Authentic Lay Spirituality,” subtitled "Where
Charity and Love Prevail." Subsequent reflections at St.
Matthew’s will be on the First Thursdays of 2010-2011.
Msgr. Vaghi is the Chaplain of the John Carroll Society and
author of The Faith We Profess: A Catholic Guide to the
Apostles’ Creed and The Sacraments We Celebrate: A
Catholic Guide to the Seven Mysteries of Faith (Ave Maria
Press).

TALK ON THE GIFT OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY
On Thursday, September 23 at 8pm, Mary Ann Kuharski,
Director of PROLIFE Across AMERICA, Catholic wife and
mother of 13 children, will speak on "Raising Catholic
Children and the Gift of Marriage and Family" at Our Lady of
Victory Catholic Church, 4835 MacArthur Boulevard, Washington, DC. Mrs. Kuharski is the author of
Raising Catholic Children, Parenting with Prayer, Building a
Legacy of Love and Outnumbered Raising 13 Kids with
Humor and Prayer. All are welcome.
JOHN PAUL THE GREAT LEGACY PROJECT
The Second Annual John Paul the Great Legacy Project
Conference will take place at the Pope John Paul II Cultural
Center in Washington, DC on September 24, at 6:30pm. The
purpose of the Project is to make known the rich patrimony
entrusted to the Church by the Holy Spirit during the life and
papacy of our beloved late Holy Father. This year's presenters
are Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl, S.T.D. and Fr. Benedict

JOHN PAUL II FELLOWSHIP
John Paul II Fellowship 2010 Fall Membership Series will be
held Thursday evenings, October 14 - November 18, from
6:30pm until 9:30pm at St. Peter Catholic Church on Capitol
Hill. All are invited to join the John Paul II Fellowship and
become part of a movement to renew Catholic community
and culture through this fall membership series. During the
six-week series, new members meet once a week for prayer, a
lecture and discussion series on the Church’s vision for the
human person and society, and an elegant dinner. When the
membership series is complete, new members will become
John Paul II Fellows and will be invited to join the
Fellowship at regular gatherings. To apply for the JPII
