Relationships?! I am the isolator. I have pushed everyone away from me for fear they will see what I really am. But wait... I have been working a program of recovery... I have been asking my Higher Power to do for me what I can't do. Now I am a better person... Well, much better than I was, that is for sure. And surprise! I got rewarded. I had a relationship with someone that became abusive. I left. But because of it, I got sober. I had a relationship with someone that I later figured out was a fake. But because of it, I got real. I had an internet relationship with someone 20 years older. But because of it, age doesn't matter to me. I had a relationship with someone who had an STD. But because of it, I learned about safe sex. I had a relationship with a heavy gal. And because of it, I learned to see inner beauty. I had a relationship with a really hot woman. And because of it, I learned that beautiful people have problems too. I had a relationship with my self... for years... yeah, no dating. And because of it, I learned about myself. Some of it I like and some I don't. But I had time to fix it. ¿Relaciones? ¿Relaciones?! Y ¡sorpresa! He sido recompensada. Yo me fui. Each little relationship, although they ended, was getting me ready for the next one. Each one got a little bit better. I began making better decisions. The one I have now is so incredible - like she was custom-made for me and I am custom-made for her. And we have been custom-made through lessons of the past. Empecé a hacer mejores decisiones. I can't help but bring the past into this one but it's not about stories of the past but things coming up that I have learned from them. Sometimes things come out automatically. And sometimes that is good and sometimes it is not. But I can see it and change, or see it and feel good. By the time I met Anna, I was comfortable enough with myself that if I gave her my number and she didn't call, it would be ok. But she called and we had a nervous first few hours of a date, but it just flowed after that. I don't care that she has AIDS. There is so much to her that I love and I am loving more and more each day. I feel totally gifted. Me siento completamente agradecida. I have always asked for 'papers' before doing anything with anyone. But I already knew she had AIDS when I met her and strangely enough, I didn't care. There is so much more to her than AIDS. Because of my past relationships, I am able to see it and not screech to a halt because of the word AIDS (which I used to do). I feel like our Higher Powers gave us each other as a gift and I am so honored. By: Teri, partner of Anna M. Por: Teri, pareja de Anna M. The White House Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) has launched a series of community discussions for consideration by the panel developing the National HIV/ AIDS Strategy (NHAS). My focus is based on intimate partner relationship. I highly believe that a healthy relationship is the one that violence or any sort of abuse is not tolerated- A place where one feels supported in accomplishing goals in a very positive way. In a healthy relationship, power is more shared equally rather than control of power. For one to feel safe and comfortable in a relationship, there has to be understanding between both parties where dignity and respect is more valued by both parties. In any type of relationship, there is always some sort of misunderstanding between partners- but with willingness to compromise and taking responsibility, things can be solved in a fair way without any judgments. Responsibility is a huge step to take in a healthy relationship such that both parties are willing to share decisions together- this includes distribution of housework, parenting, as well as finances. Overall, transparency and accountability in a relationship builds strong bonds where either party acknowledges mistakes done and takes measures for a positive change. Thus, everyone has to participate in consideration of the other party to fulfill a satisfactory relationship. Loving Yourself To Experience Healthy Relationships Amor para experimentar relaciones sanas A few years ago, I would have been able to say a lot about what an unhealthy relationship is like. That was pre HIV diagnosis. I believe that when one is faced with a life threatening illness, one starts to question why and begins the journey of looking at the past and moving forward into the future. Relationships are very relevant to those of us who are HIV positive. The healthier the relationships, the better ones overall physical and emotional health. Relationships are not just about intimate partners…they are about siblings, parents, offspring, friends, doctors, caregivers, coworkers and many more. About 2 to 3 years ago, a major relationship in my life was suffering. It suffered…to a point that we didn‘t speak for about 1 year. During that year, I was angry, hurt, confused but most of all I felt betrayed. I knew that if I did not confront this relationship I would never succeed in having any healthy relationships in my life. I first began questioning myself...looking into my behavior patterns. Asking, why and how things became so distorted and unhealthy? I questioned why this relationship was so challenging and why of all relationships in my life, why did this one matter so? The one thing that I discovered was that this relationship was not about the other party, it was about me. It was about how I viewed myself. It was about how I communicated or not communicated. In order for me to ever achieve any healthy relationships, I had to commit to a relationship with myself. I‘ve become my own best friend. I do nice things for myself…I take care of my body as well as mind and spirit. I have positive thoughts and surround myself with beauty. I‘ve created a safe place in my home and the most important of all…I forgive myself when I make mistakes and I‘ve forgiven myself for not being perfect. I have also discovered fear will stifle you to isolation and depression. Love yourself, do everything to help you. In order to experience fulfilling and healthy relationships...like and love yourself. That like and love of yourself will attract others who like and love themselves and create harmonious lasting relationships – relationship with your parents, siblings, your boss and all others that you choose. I‘m back in that relationship now. It‘s been challenging. That party hasn‘t changed, but I‘ve changed. I now own my boundaries and I can say when something doesn‘t feel right for me and I know when to say enough. Yes. I am in a relationship with an HIV negative woman! The only advice I can give for others in a similar new situation would be 1. Be as honest and straight forward as your own heart and soul would want and need a loving partner to be to you! 2. I have recently learned that everything has its own special perfect time or moment to be discussed or disclosed. I was in such fear of rejection, by disclosure of my status that I was an absolute wreck waiting for that perfect time. Please don't worry like I was doing; it came and passed, and we are so much in Love! Sharing honestly what our true feelings are is most rewarding in keeping our relationship healthy! Have you ever had an unhealthy relationship? What did you learn from that experience and what advice would you give other HIV+ people who are in unhealthy relationships? Yes. I have had an unhealthy relationship, where my wants and needs always came last in a pecking order, and more often than not, when my turn came about, I was most often than not , bypassed again or as I call it put in “last place”! What I learned from that is "When the horse is dead, get off." So if your wants and needs are being disregarded, wish that person the best, but, please leave! Someone special is out there just for you! Mark S. The relationships in my life have been very casual to intensely intimate. My first relationships were with my family of origin. Over time I realized that my family of choice, my friends, were just as influential. I remember as a kid I watched how my friends‘ families interacted. I would compare them to my family. Although I didn‘t understand it then, I realize now that I was figuring out what constituted a functional family. I put bits and pieces together to figure out what was ―normal.‖ Whoa! My family was not even on the chart! I have been lucky to have some great friendships over the years. My friends have gotten me through some really tough times. We have also had great times. I treasure the relationships I have with my friends. Embarking on any new relationship can have risks. Fear of rejection and uncertainty can keep all of us from reaching out. I value honesty, kindness, humor and intellect. Those are the qualities I look for in friendships and in my intimate relationships. Honesty in a relationship is essential. Kindness sometimes needs to temper honesty. When I say; ―How do I look in this outfit?‖ I don‘t want to hear, ―like crap,‖ but, ―maybe the blue would be better.‖ I cannot imagine being in an intimate relationship without sharing humor. I want to amuse and be amused by my friends and partner. I want to be around people who have a love of learning and an interest in discussing many different ideas. I value mutual respect and loyalty in my relationships. I want to listen and I want to be heard. I want to feel safe, physically and emotionally. I want to be able to enjoy sex and lust with my partner. I have learned that some relationships can last a very long time while others are meant to end. It can be very hard to let go of a relationship even after it has ended. One of the things that I realized when I found out that I was HIV+ was that I really didn‘t have the time to put up with stressful relationships. I have had to let go of some toxic relationships and have tried to avoid new potentially unhealthy relationships. It is really a great relief to realize that I have that choice. I try to remember that I deserve to have a life full of healthy relationships. That said, I know that love and friendship are not pain free. There are times when my friends disappoint me. I know that there are times when I disappoint them. I can only offer my understanding and hope for theirs. I try to learn from these times, but sometimes the lessons are hard. All that said, I feel incredibly lucky to have so many loving people in my life. Pat M. Goodbye Sarah Generous....This is the word I would like to use when I‘m describing a friend whom I am so fond of. She is funny and charming and she works hard at being patient and is constructive with her words because she has a passion for life and an appreciation for real friendships. I have been honored to have worked with such a kind and giving person. When I found myself in need of a true friend she was there for me. She made me feel like compassion is something she has mastered naturally. People aren‘t always fortunate enough to have someone come into their lives and welcome them with open arms and an open heart….but I can say that I have been that lucky of a person because I can say that Sarah Kent will always be a true confidante. ¡Guau! As most of you know, I‘ve been on extended maternity leave for the last few months, so that I could care for my sweet baby boy, Will, who surprised me and Graham by coming 10 weeks early this past March. It‘s been a long and challenging journey for us, but I am happy to report that Will is now doing very well. He‘s still a little guy—he was just 15 pounds, 9 ounces and 25-3/4 inches at his 7-month doctor‘s visit—but he grows bigger and stronger every day, and he‘s huge compared to when he was born! Much to my delight, Will loves to eat fruits and vegetables, read books, go for walks outside and listen to Sesame Street. He‘s pretty much the most adorable baby ever (in my completely unbiased opinion) and when he laughs it brings tears to my eyes and makes my heart sing. As you can see, Motherhood agrees with me. I was hired in 2005 to guide BABES Network through the transition to our new home at the YWCA, and I am so proud of all that we have accomplished in that time. Our successes were truly a team effort, and a huge thank you goes out to Pat, Scott, Jesse, Trina, Rosemary, Julie and Amy for their support, guidance and leadership, and to Nicole, Kelly, Tonya, Amelia, Angela, Caroline, Mindy, Joa, Anita, Sully and Chappy for their hard work, dedication and friendship. I also want to say a huge thank you to all of you for welcoming me into your Sisterhood with open arms and sharing so much of yourselves with me. You are the most amazing, courageous and inspiring group of women (and a few good men) I have ever met, and it has been my honor to work for you, my privilege to learn from you … and my absolute joy to laugh, cry, sing, dance, remember, lobby, caucus, cook, knit, canoe, picnic, ice-skate and shout ―hey‖ to the Space Needle with you! Sarah, It saddens to me think that you won‘t be working here at BABES any more, but I understand and support your decision more than you know. I know you are doing the best thing possible for you and your family. Thank you so much for always being there for me and for supporting me when things have been really challenging. You have such a big heart and I will always be inspired by your passion and your unwillingness to back down when you believe strongly in something. Sarah, my friend, you are not easily swayed. BABES is lucky to have someone like you on its side! I wish you the best of luck in wherever the future may take you. You will be greatly missed. Love you! -Kelly Hey Bossynoonie! We are surely going to miss you here at BABES. Thank you for all of your help furthering my career here at BABES and always being there for me. I am really sad that we will not see you here everyday at BABES but know that you are not far away and that you will still be involved with us. Good luck and enjoy your time with your little man! Love, Nicole In life there are always hard decisions to make. Without doubt, I think for you saying goodbye to BABES has been one of those tough decisions. This home welcomed you for so long and at the same time you welcomed all BABES with so much love, including me. We have worked together for a short period, but it was enough time to get to know you as a hard worker, generous person and now as a loving mother. Please, don't doubt for a moment that it was the best decision for you. Although we will miss you we also know that your place is there with your family and with the little one who needs you as much as you need him. Thank you for your friendship, for the shared moments and for being in contact always. Angela. I feel very lucky to have witnessed some of the major milestones in Sarah‘s life. I cried and I danced at her wedding. As amazing as that milestone was for Sarah and Graham, the next milestone was even bigger. Little Will Benton Kent has taken my breath away and has stolen my heart. We love you and will miss you. I know that you will always be a BABES advocate! Love, Pat PAGE 9 Querido Sarah, Thank you for believing in the BABES Network mission and believing in me. Your convictions and heart allowed the BABES program blossom into what it is today. You are an advocate someone who doesn‘t back down in the face of seemingly insurmountable barriers. Your assurance in my abilities gave me energy and strength for which I am so very grateful. Will is blessed to have a mother who has, and will, fight for him despite all odds. We are all behind you, silently and not-so-silently supporting you on your new and wonderful journey, hoping to give back some of what we have gained from your compassion and loyalty. Nos vemos pronto, Amelia Saying ‗goodbye‘ to Sarah Kent brings up many memories of BABES‘ journey in the past few years. My hat is off to Sarah for shepherding BABES Network into the YWCA, helping to smooth the transition between organizations, and caring for members and staff with deep conviction and passion for the mission of BABES and the YWCA. I am thankful for the many ways that Sarah has vigorously promoted the needs of women living with HIV and helped to shape the place of BABES at the YWCA. Best to you, Sarah! Scott Pinegar It was four years ago that I first met BABES and facilitated the first Theater for Development (TFD) project. Not only was that project a success but so was the second one in 2007, and all the workshops over the past few years where the women of BABES have made the practice their own. Working with BABES has been a professional dream come true for me. Personally -- who knew that I would someday call these women my best friends -- so much so that I moved to Seattle! None of this would have happened had it not been for Sarah. She received an email about a graduate student wanting to do a TFD project with a group in the Seattle community and immediately recognized BABES potential for the practice. Sarah believed in the idea and trusted the process with relentless faith and was able to convince others to do so even when the outcome was unpredictable. BABES success with TFD would not have been possible without Sarah's conviction and faith. As I again embark upon a project where the outcome is unpredictable, it‘s helpful for me to remember this. I think it‘s fair to say that I probably would not be where I am today had Sarah not also had faith in me. -Caroline BABES Network-YWCA 206.720.5566/1.888.292.1912 (toll free) www.babesnetwork.org PAGE 10 What‟s Happening at BABES? In September, we joined thousands of others in the AIDS Walk sponsored by Lifelong AIDS Alliance. It was a really nice day and it actually didn’t rain! The Walk has raised close to $500,000 so far and the money is still rolling in. On September 17th we had our Stella Steps Out fundraiser and it went really well - we had a sold out crowd and raised almost $20,000! Good job to the Stella committee for their time, energy and awesome work! Also, in September Amelia and 20 BABES and their families braved the storm and watched the Mariners beat the Oakland A’s. It was really wet but everyone had a great time.
