Romero Celebration - March 13th - 12:30pm
On Sunday, March 13th our Salvadoran Community will
host our parish’s annual celebration in honor of Blessed
Bishop Oscar Romero. Mass will begin at 12:30pm and
Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chavez will celebrate the Mass.
Bishop Gregorio Rosa Chávez is the Auxiliary Bishop
from San Salvador. Bishop Rosa Chávez feels a deep
personal connection to Blessed Romero. Many see him
as the carrier of Romero’s torch of justice and peace.
Bishop Rosa Chávez is profoundly connected to the
struggles of his people. Bishop Rosa Chávez has been
the guest speaker at the Romero Celebrations in
Kansas City in 2008, 2010 and 2013. We are humbled
that he accepted the invitation once again to join us on
this 36th anniversary.
Blessed Óscar Arnulfo Romero (August 15, 1917 March 24, 1980) was a prominent Roman Catholic
priest in El Salvador during the 1960s and 1970s,
becoming Archbishop of San Salvador in 1977. After
witnessing numerous violations of human rights, he
began to speak out on behalf of the poor and the
victims of repression. This led to numerous conflicts,
both with the government in El Salvador and within the
Catholic Church. After speaking out against U.S.
military support for the government of El Salvador, and
calling for soldiers to disobey orders to fire on innocent
civilians, Archbishop Romero was shot dead while
celebrating Mass at the small chapel of the cancer
hospital where he lived.
Bilingual Story Time
The Belton Library is coming to St. Sabina the second
Thursday of every month to present story time in
English and Spanish for pre-school age children.
Please plan on joining us on March 10th at 10am in the
Juan Diego Room in the Education Wing. You are
invited to bring a toy and stay for an hour of play after
Story Time.

offers us the gifts of mercy and forgiveness. Please join
us as we celebrate this mercy during the sacrament of
Reconciliation.

The Sacred Triduum - The Story of Salvation
Told by Word and Symbol - March 10 at 7pm
Comprising Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the
Easter Vigil, the Triduum is one celebration leading us
into the heart of our identity as the Catholic Church. Yet,
we do not merely recall a historical event. Through our
own dying and rising with Jesus Christ, we are
challenged to re-enter Christ’s paschal mystery, that by
dying to ourselves, we may receive the promise of
Easter and rise to new life in Christ!
The rituals of the Triduum use word and symbol to
speak to each of us in a unique way. By sharing what
the symbols mean to each of us and exploring how they
came to be used in our liturgy, each of us can have a
richer celebration of how God is using them to speak to
us anew this year.
This session is being facilitated by Rob Kottenbrock and
it will be held on Thursday, March 10th at 7pm in the
church. To register please contact Biagio at 816-9793153 or the parish office at 816-331-4713 or sign up in
the gathering space.

An estimated 86 million American adults are pre-diabetic; they have Tuesday:
higher than normal blood sugar levels that, barring intervention, will
put most of them on track to develop full-blown type 2 diabetes in the Wednesday:
next ten years. The good news: Even if you’re in this group, it’s not
too late to shift course, says Elizabeth Venditti, PhD, a principal Thursday:
investigator with the National Institutes of Health’s Diabetes
Prevention Program Outcomes Study. Take this quiz to get healthier.
Friday:
1. You’re out to dinner. What should you order?
A. Salad with salmon
B. Chicken and veggies
Saturday:
C. Chicken, veggies, and a quinoa salad
ANSWER: C There’s a lot of talk about plant-based and carb-free
diets being the healthiest, but when it comes to type 2 diabetes, the
most important thing is calorie control and proportions, “Half your plate should be fruits and vegetables, a quarter
can be starches and grains, and another quarter should be protein,” says Venditti. Keep in mind that consuming
protein and vegetables before carbs may lead to lower insulin spikes, according to recent research.

Stewardship/Pastor’s Note
“So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were
appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of
Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made
him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might
become the righteousness of God in him.”
2 Corinthians 5: 20-21
Then, as now, an ambassador was one who
represented a ruler, at that time most likely a king, in
dealing with others. Paul’s meaning is that we are
called to represent our King, the Lord, here and now
in our dealings with others. We do things
representing our Lord and Savior, and we need to
recognize both that fact and the responsibility which
goes with it. It is what being a steward means —
someone who is placed in charge of gifts which
come to us from God and which are to be used in
God’s behalf. That should be part of our Lenten
efforts. — See more at www.catholicsteward.com/

A Note from Fr. Jeff
Easter is rapidly approaching and I pray that we all are sacrificing material needs during this Lenten season. The
more we realize how these things of this world do not matter much in the eyes of God, the better we can live as
sons and daughters of God. The money we save by not purchasing everything we see and want actually frees us
to understand better what Pope Francis is requesting all of us to do; to think about the needs of others. I have
noticed that our special collections have been very low during my three and a half years here at St. Sabina. For
this reason, we have decided to return the second collection after communion. This allows us to focus not just on
the needs of our parish, but also the many needs that our church deems necessary for second collections.
Already we have noticed an increase in the first second collection we had. We are going to continue having
second collections every week until the summer. On weekends when there is not a mandated collection for the
diocese, we will designate all funds for our buildings and maintenance upkeep. This will allow us to set aside
funds for the needs around our parish. Our sidewalks are crumbling and the pot holes in our parking lot are
increasing. The carpeting in the school of religion and some of the offices is dismal. I am hoping that we can raise
the funds in the next few months to offset most of these expenditures. As my good friend in the heart of Chicago
always says to his parish, “God loves a cheerful giver!”

Reflection on the Readings
The fourth Sunday of Lent is traditionally known as Laetare or Rejoice Sunday, focusing on
the anticipated joy of Easter at the heart of the baptismal and penitential season of Lent. This
Sunday the priest can wear rose colored vestments indicating our anticipated Easter joy.
Reflecting on this Sunday’s readings, the theme of joy that comes from reconciliation and from
having been fully restored to God’s loving relationship come through powerfully. Reconciliation
involves a willingness to change by letting go of the past and being fully open to the
transforming presence of God and others. With the catechumens, those preparing for baptism
at the Easter Vigil, we resolve to renew our own baptismal promises and recommit ourselves
once more to live and act like Jesus.
The refrain of responsorial Psalm 34 encourages us to partake in that joy by asking us to “Taste and see the
goodness of the Lord.” The psalm invites us to bless and praise the Lord because of God’s attentive ear to our
pleas for help. The psalmist assures us that no matter what, we can trust in the Lord who does hear our cry for help
and delivers us. This Sunday, we take great joy in our attentive and life-giving God as we begin our communal
gathering with the invitation to rejoice, laetare.
The first reading from Joshua celebrates the reality that the Israelites are in the Promised Land after God “removed
the reproach of Egypt” from their midst. They are no longer in bondage in Egypt. With God’s help, they have
journeyed through the desert with all its difficulties. Finally, they are camped on the land of promise, and can
partake fully of the land’s rich food and drink. Such nourishment assures them that God does keep promises and
can be relied upon. God heard their cries and did marvelous deeds on their behalf, restoring them once more to
fullness of relationship. In many ways, the Israelites can now literally “taste and see the goodness of the Lord.”
Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians calls us “a new creation” brought about by God’s reconciling action in Christ.
God did not look upon our deeds or what we deserved. Rather God chose to let go of our past offenses and begin
anew in Jesus. God’s reconciling action through Christ makes us a “new creation.” We begin our new life in Christ
by committing ourselves to the “ministry of reconciliation,” to become living models of reconciliation to the world.
What God has done for us, we commit ourselves to do for one another. In this way all “taste and see the goodness
of the Lord.”
In the loving father/prodigal son parable, Luke emphasizes the reality that God’s love knows no boundaries, loving
all equally, completely and totally without restrictions, reservations or hesitations. The loving father does not dwell
on the past but rather begins anew, giving new life to his now restored son.
This image of God presents many challenges for us simply because it is so different from the way we express love.
Often our love is like that of the elder brother – restrictive, resentful, limited and retributive. Yet, we are called to
imitate God in our manifestation of love. With Paul, we are all called to the “ministry of reconciliation” without limits
or restraints.
Today, take time to rejoice in
that love, and commit yourself
to modeling that love to all,
without any prejudice or
restrictions. Laetare Sunday is
indeed full of joy, allowing us
to fully “taste and see the
goodness of the Lord.” How
will you make that joy your
own?
