Tras casi 25 años de incesante promoción, Valencia ya ha consolidado su marca turística y juega
en la primera división de los destinos europeos, un grupo del entorno de 40 destinos que, según
la Asociación de Ciudades Turísticas Europeas (ECM), anualmente reciben más de un millón de
pernoctaciones anuales.
No sólo estamos en este selecto club, sino que si en 2003, algo más de un 30% de nuestras
pernoctaciones eran extranjeras, diez años más tarde hemos doblado esta cifra, lo que nos ha llevado
a superar la media europea de crecimiento turístico. El año pasado la media europea de crecimiento
de pernoctaciones fue del 3%, en Valencia crecimos un 5%. Desde 2009, cuando comenzó la crisis, la
media europea ha sido del 22,5% y la de Valencia un 55%.
Y donde van los turistas, van las aerolíneas. En la temporada alta de este año hemos tenido conexión
con 49 aeropuertos, entre los que se encuentran los principales hubs europeos, con los que
mantenemos vuelos todo el año: Frankfurt, París, Amsterdam, Madrid, Zurich, Estambul y Gatwick.
Además, no cejamos en nuestro empeño de recuperar Heathrow.
Para cerrar el círculo, las conexiones, a su vez, aportan visitantes. Valencia tuvo 2,28 millones de
pasajeros de llegada en su aeropuerto en 2013, una cifra un 89% superior a la que registrábamos
diez años atrás. De las llegadas de 2013, el 70% procedían de aeropuertos extranjeros, proporción
que se mantiene en lo que va de 2014 y que apunta al sexto año de crecimiento ininterrumpido de
llegadas desde aeropuertos extranjeros.

Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres. Valencia es un destino indudablemente atractivo para el
turismo internacional, por otro lado, el que más gasta.

After nearly 25 years of relentless promotion, Valencia has consolidated its tourism brand and is now
in the first division of European destinations, a group of around 40 destinations, which, according to
European Cities Marketing (ECM), annually receive more than one million overnight stays per year.
We are not just in this select club. In 2003, just over 30% of our overnight stays were foreign, and
ten years later we have doubled this figure, meaning we have exceeded the European average for
tourism growth. Last year the European average growth in overnight stays was 3% and in Valencia
we grew 5%. Since 2009, when the crisis began, the European average has been 22.5% and in
Valencia it has been 55%.
And where tourists go, airlines go also. In this year’s high season, there were connections to 49
airports, including the main European hubs, where we have flights to all year: Frankfurt, Paris,
Amsterdam, Madrid, Zurich, Istanbul and Gatwick. We are also constantly working on our efforts to
recover Heathrow as a destination.
To close the circle, connections, in turn, bring visitors. Valencia had 2.28 million arriving passengers
at its airport in 2013, a figure 89% higher than we recorded ten years ago. Of the arrivals in 2013,
70% came from foreign airports, and this ratio has remained constant so far in 2014, and we are
heading towards the sixth year of uninterrupted growth of arrivals from foreign airports.

realizar; un referente en preparación y variedad de oferta para este
segmento. Un buen modo de empezar es conociendo algo de
historia y la parte más monumental de la ciudad, el centro,
con una visita guiada. La empresa Turiart organiza diversas
rutas teatralizadas y tematizadas para los más pequeños. Atrapa
un dragón o Caballeros y Princesas son dos buenas opciones
o, para los más aventureros, Piratas de la Malvarrosa, ya en
la zona de playa, con opción de completar la actividad con una
salida en barco surcando las aguas mediterráneas.
Today Valencia is the perfect place for travelling families, with
plenty of fun things to do and places to visit; a benchmark in
preparation and the variety of choice for this market segment.
A good way to start is by getting to know the city’s history
and its most monumental areas, which is the centre, with
a guided tour. Turiart is a company that organizes various
dramatized and themed tours for children. Catch a Dragon
and Knights and Princesses are both good options and, for
the more adventurous, there is Pirates of the Malvarrosa,
which takes place by the beach, with an option to complete the
activity with a boat trip on the Mediterranean.

que atraviesa la ciudad con más de 8 kilómetros transitables,
se encuentran dos lugares imprescindibles para los pequeños
viajeros: Bioparc Valencia y la Ciudad de las Artes y las

divierten. El primero de ellos es un parque que recrea la sabana
africana y Madagascar, sin barreras perceptibles a los ojos
humanos y con numerosos ejemplares de las especies de estas
zonas. Ser testigo en primera persona de cómo se bañan los
elefantes o hipopótamos, contemplar la tranquilidad de los
gorilas o los saltos de los pequeños lémures, son algunos de los
privilegios del parque.
At either end of the Jardines del Turia, an 8 km long walkable
green space running through the city, there are two essential
places for young travellers: Bioparc Valencia and the City
of Arts and Sciences, where children can learn all about
nature and having fun at the same time. The former is a park
that recreates the African savannah and Madagascar, without
barriers visible to the human eye, home to numerous specimens
of the species from these areas. Watching first-hand how
elephants or hippos bathe, seeing the tranquillity of gorillas and
the small jumps of the lemurs are some of the highlights of the
park.
En el otro extremo del antiguo cauce de Turia, en la Ciudad de
las Artes y las Ciencias podrán descubrir también los secretos
del mundo submarino. Tiburones, belugas, morsas, delfines o
pingüinos, son sólo algunos de los animales que aguardan al

Y por si todo esto fuera poco, tumbado en los Jardines del
Turia se puede encontrar a Gulliver. Un inmenso parque de
toboganes en el que los niños asemejan liliputienses y disfrutan
como enanos al deslizarse por los dedos, el pelo o las piernas de
esta gigante figura que mide 70 metros.
Es también agradable el paseo por el antiguo cauce del
Turia en bicicleta, tándem o segway, servicios disponibles
para su alquiler, con los que también disfrutarán grandes y
pequeños. Además, hay otros muchos lugares, como salir en
catamarán por la playa de la Malvarrosa, dar un paseo en
barca por la Albufera, o contemplar la impresionante muestra
de Soldaditos de Plomo del Museo L’Iber, en la Calle
Caballeros. Valencia es un auténtico paraíso para los más
pequeños, en el que la diversión no está reñida con la historia, la
ciencia y la naturaleza.
At the other end of the old river bed of the Turia, at the City
of Arts and Sciences, children can also discover the secrets
of the underwater world. Sharks, beluga whales, dolphins
and penguins, and in total some 500 species inhabit the
Oceanographic. The offer for the kids is completed with a
visit to the Hemisfèric, with IMAX film screenings or to the
Príncipe Felipe Science Museum, whose motto is the real
dream of every child: “Do not not touch”. What better way to
learn some of the secrets of science?
And if all this were not enough, then there is Gulliver lying in
the Turia Gardens. A huge playground of slides where children
are just like Lilliputians and have a great time as dwarves sliding
down the fingers, hair, or legs of this 70m long giant figure.
Another pleasant thing to do is ride along the old Turia
river bed by bike, tandem or segway, all of which can be
rented, and enjoyed by the big and small alike. There are also
many other places to visit and things to do, such as sailing a
catamaran off the Malvarrosa beach, going on a boat ride
on the Albufera lake, or seeing the impressive display of
Lead Soldiers in the L’Iber Museum on Calle Caballeros.
Valencia is a real haven for the little ones, where the fun is not at
odds with history, science and nature.

No es la primera vez que advertimos en
estas páginas que, aunque el calendario
insista, en Valencia el otoño no es
realmente otoño. Tampoco en invierno
bajan demasiado las temperaturas. La
temporada de terrazas se alarga en
esta urbe mediterránea, prolongando
una especie de verano sin los sofocos
del calor y con una vibrante y atractiva
agenda. El turismo de negocios se
multiplica en estas fechas, convirtiendo
este oasis de buen tiempo en sede de
destacadas reuniones nacionales e
internacionales.
Ejemplo de ello son el Congreso de
la Sociedad Española de Pediatría
Extrahospitalaria, que reunirá
alrededor de 2.500 asistentes en el
Palacio Congresos en Octubre;
la Feria Iberflora que tendrá lugar
también este mes en Feria Valencia
con alrededor de 1.000 asistentes; o
la Reunión Anual de la Sociedad
Española de Neurología con más
de 2.000 asistentes en el Palacio de
Congresos, entre otros.
It is not the first time that we have
mentioned this in these pages,
although the calendar does reiterate
it, but autumn in Valencia is not really
autumn. The temperatures here do not
drop too much in winter either. The
street terrace season continues
for far longer in this Mediterranean
city, in an ongoing sort of summer
without the intense heat, and with
a vibrant and attractive program.
Business tourism grows at this time,
making this oasis of good weather the
host of major national and international
meetings.
Examples of this are the Congress of
the Spanish Society of Outpatient
Paediatrics, which will bring together
about 2,500 attendees at the Palacio
de Congresos in October, the
Iberflora Fair which will also take
place this month at the Feria Valencia
with about 1,000 attendees, and the
Annual Meeting of the Spanish
Neurology Society, with more than
2,000 attendees at the Palacio de
Congresos, amongst others.

Dijo el escritor Italo Calvino que “al llegar a cada nueva ciudad
el viajero encuentra un pasado suyo que ya no sabía que tenía:
la extrañeza de lo que no eres o no posees más te espera al
paso en los lugares extraños y no poseídos”. Algo similar se
experimenta al contemplar la Albufera. Las apacibles aguas
del lago y el Parque Natural que lo abraza son reflejo de
tradiciones que se conservan tan vivas que puede llegar a
parecer que el viaje es en realidad en el tiempo. Un viaje a
la historia de aquellos primeros pescadores y agricultores que ya
no somos, pero de los que todavía llevamos algo dentro.
The writer Italo Calvino once said “Arriving at each new city, the
traveller finds again a past of his that he did not know he had:
the foreignness of what you no longer are or no longer possess
lies in wait for you in foreign, unpossessed places.” Something
similar is experienced when watching the Albufera. The placid
waters of the lake and the Natural Park that surrounds it
reflect the traditions that remain so vivid that it can seem
as though your journey is actually a trip in time. A journey
to the history of those early fishermen and farmers who we no
longer are, but of whom we still carry a little something inside.
Además del espectacular entorno natural, el Parque
abarca 21.000 hectáreas, en las que anidan especies como
la garza real o el pato colorado; forman parte del paisaje
fijo de la Albufera algunas barracas, construcción típica
valenciana y el faenar de los pescadores de la zona. En
sus albuferencs, embarcaciones de poco calado y fondo plano,
ya que la profundidad del lago en algunas zonas es menor a
los dos metros, y con vela latina, realizan su actividad pesquera
manteniendo muchos usos y costumbres de otras épocas.
In addition to the spectacular natural setting, the park covers
some 21,000 hectares and is the nesting place to species such
as herons and teals. Forming part of the fixed landscape
of the Albufera are some traditional “barracas”, typical
Valencian constructions, and the fishermen carrying out
their work around the lake. Retaining the many customs of
the past, they go fishing in their albuferencs with lateen sails,
shallow draft and flat bottom boats, since the lake in some areas
is less than two meters deep.

Between October and March, to catch the species that migrate
out to sea and on the east side of the lake, redolins fishing takes
place on pitches with a fixed draft net and a system of traps;
fisherman work in shifts that are established by an annual lottery.
The other way of fishing, which takes places throughout the lake,
is involant fishing, using a rod or line and traps.
Entre octubre y marzo, para captar las especies que emigran al
mar, en la zona este del lago se practica la pesca en redolins,
con un lugar fijo de calado de la red y un sistema de nasas; y
turnos entre los pescadores que se establecen por un sorteo
anual. La otra modalidad, que se practica en todo el lago, es la
pesca involant, con caña o palangre y nasas.
Inseparables también de este paisaje de la Albufera son
las amplias extensiones de arrozales que lo pueblan.
Valencia es cuna del cultivo del arroz en España, introducido
por los árabes durante el siglo VIII. A lo largo de muchos siglos
se buscó la mejor manera de cultivar el cereal, llegando a la
conclusión de que las zonas pantanosas por naturaleza eran las
más apropiadas para ello. Así, durante el siglo XIX el cultivo del
arroz se expandió en la Albufera de tal manera que la superficie
del lago disminuyó considerablemente.

Hoy en día estos arrozales siguen reflejando, a tan sólo diez
minutos del núcleo urbano, los mejores atardeceres de la
ciudad, y muchas otras huellas que el cultivo ha dejado en estas
tierras. La Albufera es uno de los mejores lugares para descubrir
la identidad más auténtica de Valencia, a bordo de un albuferenc
o degustando en el Palmar una tradicional paella valenciana,
receta que también tiene su origen alrededor de estas aguas.

An inseparable part of this landscape of the Albufera
are the wide expanses of rice paddies that populate it.
Valencia is the cradle of rice cultivation in Spain, which was
introduced by the Arabs in the eighth century. The best way to
cultivate the cereal was constantly sought over the centuries,
with the conclusion arrived at that natural wetlands were the
most appropriate for it. Thus, during the nineteenth century rice
cultivation expanded in the lagoon, and the surface area of the
lake decreased considerably.
Just ten minutes from the city centre, the best sunsets in the
city are to be found at these rice paddies, as well as many other
marks that agriculture has left in this land. The Albufera is one of
the best places to discover the true identity of Valencia, either
aboard an albuferenc or enjoying a traditional paella in El Palmar,
the recipe of which also originates near these waters.
Panorámica
Hidden for over 300 years behind its baroque dome,
a decade has now elapsed since these Renaissance
frescoes were rediscovered above the High Altar of the
Valencia Cathedral. The paintings were commissioned
by Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, later Pope Alexander V,
and painted by the Italian artists Paolo da San Leocadio
and Francesco Pagano, who started work on them in
1476. 200 years later they were covered over during
the Baroque refurbishment of the Cathedral presbytery.
They show twelve angels playing musical instruments
of the time. In these ten years more than two million
people have been able to view this treasure, a great
artistic discovery, as it is one of the most important
paintings of the early Spanish Renaissance and shows
the great period of splendour that the city of Valencia
experienced during the XV century.

Ocultos durante más de 300 años tras la bóveda
barroca, se cumple ahora una década desde que estos
frescos renacentistas fueran redescubiertos sobre el Altar
Mayor de la Catedral de Valencia. Las pinturas fueron
encargadas por el cardenal Rodrigo de Borja, futuro
Papa Alejandro V, a los artistas italianos Paolo da San
Leocadio y Francesco Pagano, que iniciaron el trabajo en
1476 y 200 años más tarde fueron tapadas en la reforma
barroca del presbiterio de la Catedral. Representan
a doce ángeles tocando instrumentos musicales de
la época. En estos diez años más de dos millones de
personas han podido contemplar este tesoro, un gran
descubrimiento artístico, al tratarse de una de las más
importantes obras pictóricas del primer Renacimiento

Objetivo
Por su orografía y climatología, Valencia es una ciudad ideal para el
running. De ahí que este deporte tenga cada vez más adeptos y
atraiga a aficionados extranjeros. Los Jardines del Turia, con más de
8 kilómetros ajardinados, son el lugar más idóneo para practicarlo.
Además se celebran numerosas carreras populares, como la Media
Maratón o la Maratón Trinidad Alfonso.
Due to its terrain and weather, Valencia is a great city for running.
More and more are consequently taking part in this sport which is
attracting foreign fans. The Jardines del Turia, a landscaped park over
8 kilometres long, is the most ideal place to go for a run. There are
also numerous open races such as the Half Marathon and the Trinidad
Alfonso Marathon.
El Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas fue construido el siglo XV. En
1740 se añadió su famosa fachada barroca en alabastro, alegoría
de los ríos Turia y Júcar. En 1954 abrió allí sus puertas el Museo
Nacional de Cerámica, con la colección donada al Estado por don
Manuel González Martí. Hoy exhibe también colecciones de pintura,
grabado, textiles e indumentaria.
Para respirar tranquilidad y reposo, no hay lugar mejor que los
Jardines de Monforte, declarados jardines artísticos. Junto a
la Alameda y muy cerca también de los Jardines de Viveros, este
espacio con trazado de corte neoclásico destaca por las numerosas
estatuas de mármol, jarrones, fuentes ornamentales y coloridas zonas
de flores.
The Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas was built in the XV century.
In 1740 its famous baroque facade was added in alabaster, an
allegory of the Turia and Júcar rivers. In 1954 the National Ceramics
Museum opened its doors there, with a collection donated to the
Nation by Manuel González Martí. Today it also exhibits collections of
painting, printmaking, textiles and clothing.
There is no better place than the Jardines de Monforte, declared
as artistic gardens, to breathe tranquillity and rest. Located next to the
Alameda and also very close to the Jardines de Viveros, this space
with its neoclassical layout stands out due to its numerous marble
statues, vases, ornamental fountains and colourful flower gardens.
El vanguardista horizonte urbano de Valencia contrasta con el cinturón
verde que la rodea: la huerta valenciana. Un skyline propio de las
ciudades más avanzadas, junto al que se divisan extensiones de tierra
dedicadas a usos agrícolas. Un auténtico lujo para la gastronomía de la
zona y un placer para la vista y los oídos.
Valencia’s avant-guard urban horizon contrasts against the green belt
that surrounds it: the Valencian huerta. A skyline of one of the most
modern cities lies next to tracts of land devoted to agriculture - a real
luxury for the region’s cuisine and a treat for the eyes and ears.
En diciembre Valencia se tiñe de rojo, verde y blanco. Los colores de
la Navidad decoran calles, plazas y mercados y, en algunos de ellos,
como el Mercado de Colón o la calle Don Juan de Austria, pueden
escucharse recitales de villancicos junto a humeantes puestos de
castañas asadas. Hay además exposiciones de belenes, como el
de la Catedral o el del Museo Nacional de Cerámica, y mercadillos
navideños para las compras más artesanas.
In December Valencia is coloured in red, green and white. The colours
of Christmas decorate the streets, squares and markets, and in some
of them, such as the Mercado de Colón and Calle Don Juan de Austria,
recitals can be heard of joyful carols next to the stands selling smoky
roasted chestnuts. There are also nativity exhibitions, such as the one
at the Cathedral and the National Museum of Ceramics, as well as
Christmas markets where you can purchase different types of craft.
Galerías de arte, cafés-librería, restaurantes o las tiendas más
curiosas se encuentran en el barrio de Ruzafa. Esta zona, en la
que recalan cada vez más intelectuales y artistas, tiene además su
propio mercado y una interesante agenda cultural y de ocio. Ubik
Café, con sus talleres creativos, musicales y manuales es un buen
ejemplo de ello.
Art galleries, café bookshops, restaurants and the most interesting
of shops can all be found in the district of Ruzafa. This area,
which is increasingly frequented by intellectuals and artists, has its
own market and an interesting cultural and entertainment program.
Ubik Café, with its creative, musical and manual workshops, is a
good example.
Esta elegante construcción de estilo neoclásico recibe a los
navegantes en el Puerto de Valencia. A principios del siglo XX
albergaba el pasaje y prestaba servicio telegráfico, de facturación
de equipajes y expedición de billetes. Debe su nombre al reloj que
se instaló, ya en el proyecto original, para ayudar al comercio, a
regular las transacciones y tareas del puerto.
This elegant neoclassical building welcomes sailors at the Port of
Valencia. In the early twentieth century it served as a passenger
terminal and provided the telegraphy, baggage handling and
ticketing services. Named after the clock that was installed there
in its original design, its purpose was to assist in trade and in
regulating the transactions and business in the port.

Jorge has cooking in his
blood. This passion was
installed into Vertical’s
chef by his mother, Loles
Salvador, who taught
him as a small boy in
their kitchen and who
he confesses is still his
inspiration and teacher. In
Vertical, a Michelin Star
restaurant that also enjoys
a privileged panoramic
view of the city, he
offers a menu based on
renewed tradition. For
him Valencia is “the most
intense expression of the
Mediterranean culture,
its sea, market gardens
and fields, a magnificent
pantry” which can be
seen every day, and,
having passed through
his hands, tasted every
day in the restaurant.
His recommendation to
visitors would be a visit
to the historic centre,
the Central Market, a
stroll through the urban
beaches of Valencia and
a visit to the Albufera
Natural Park, although the
place he chooses to get
lost in is the beach at El
Saler. In Valencia tradition
and modernity co-exist
at all levels, in art and in
architecture etc., and he applies this to perfection in his
cooking. Maybe that’s why his menu has been the public’s
favourite over the last two editions of the Valencia Cuina
Open-Restaurant Week.
