Cancun is the best option for having fun filled vacation experiences!
w w w. c a n c u n . t r a v e l
Welcome to Paradise
Cancún delivers the best of both worlds:
the Caribbean and Mexico. For visitors who
frequent other Caribbean destinations,
Cancún offers an unequalled mix of manmade, natural, and cultural attractions.
Cancún was a part of the ancient Mayan
civilization and is still considered the
gateway to the Mayan World (“El Mundo
Maya”). Mayan temples and ritual sites are
literally everywhere, some smothered by
lush jungle, others easily accessible (one
pops up at one of our golf courses). There
is even a Mayan temple overlooking the
Caribbean Sea in the heart of the Cancún
Hotel Zone!
Cancun is situated on the southeast coast
of Mexico in the state of Quintana Roo in
the Yucatan Peninsula. The small island
just 12 miles long and 1 mile wide right
on the Caribbean coast is marked by
exceptional natural beauty and dotted
with lagoons and spectacular beaches.
Warm white powdery sand beaches and
turquoise crystal clear waters together
with the famous Mexican hospitality make
this a place like no other!
Cancun has the most modern and
functional airport in Latin America and
the Caribbean, offering worldwide
connections and flights. Its hotels,
restaurants, shopping malls and
entertainment centers offer the best
quality and service, not only in the
Caribbean, but worldwide.
With 250 sunny days a year, the gentle
sea breezes keep the temperature at
around 80ºF.

Transportation in C
* Cancún International Airport is located approximately 15-25 minutes from the Hotel Zone and 15 minutes from downtown
Cancún.

BY BUS. Best way to move along the Hotels Zone is by
bus. The bus system is reliable and inexpensive (one ride
costs about US $0.73 (9.5 pesos). The Route 1, runs along
the Hotels Zone and also takes you to downtown, Tulum
Ave, bus station and Puerto Juarez. You don’t have to wait
more than 3-4 minutes for the bus. Buses operate between
6:00 and 24:00 hrs.
BY TAXI. Taxis in Cancún are regulated, safe and reliable.
There are over 3,000 taxis in operation. Make sure to
ask the doorman at the hotel the rates so there are no
surprises; most hotels post a list of rates from the hotel to
various points in and around Cancún.
BY CAR. You will find in Cancún all the major car rental
companies. They all have a great range of new and
comfortable rental cars. This is the easiest way to explore
the surrounding beaches, villages and Mayan Ruins. TIP:
some car rental agencies give drivers a ‘get out of a ticket
free’ card! If you’re pulled over for minor infractions, the
card is shown to police who will ‘forgive’ your first two
infractions! Really!
BY FERRY. If you are planning to visit Isla Mujeres you
take the ferry in Puerto Juárez, and run every half hour
from 5:30 to 20:30 hrs. And then once every hour until
23:30 hrs. From Chiquila to Holbox, the transportation
leaves every 2 hours from 6:00 to 21:30 hrs. And the ferry
to Cozumel leaves from Playa del Carmen every hour from
7:00 to 22:00 hrs.

UNDERWATER MUSEUM OF ART “MUSA”
The Cancun Underwater Museum is located in different
areas of the National Park West Coast of Isla Mujeres,
Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc. This project is unique and
raises the fusion of art with environmental conservation on
a large scale.
Come and enjoy the largest underwater museum in the
world, with more than 500 life-size sculptures, strategically
placed at different depths that create artificial reefs.
The submerged sculptures are also visible from the
surface, and when seen from above create the silhouette
of a human eye. Five different artists from 3 different
countries make the sculptures.
Each human size statue tells a different story and can be
seen easily by diving, snorkeling or from a glass bottom

Sublime festival of flavors
What sets the gastronomic offer of
this city apart is an important culinary
movement, with chefs from all over
the world.
Cancún is without rival in the
Caribbean when it comes to dining
variety. Over 200 restaurants (many
with elegant and beautiful décor)
feature cuisine from around the world,
plus delicious nouvelle and traditional
Mexican cooking, or even regional
specialties.
Excellence is always a common
denominator in the destination’s
culinary experience. The beautiful
settings are part of the enjoyment of
a stay here: a thatched roof “palapa”
by the sea, or views of sunsets on the
beautiful lagoon, both accompanied
by the sound of violins, pianos,
saxophones, trios, mariachis and
jaraneros (jarana is an special kind of
guitar).
By experimenting with new techniques,
using new ingredients and fusing
culinary styles, the chefs achieve
dishes that are a delight for all the
senses. It is no surprise that many of
the destination’s restaurants are listed
among the best in specialized travel
magazines and received awards from
the Michelin guide and AAA, among
other important associations.

be part of your Cancun vacation; you
will find a different fabulous restaurant
for every night of your vacation.
Cancun is a paradise for gourmets,
but you can also find everything from
fast food to exotic. You can try the
Mayan cuisine; the culinary delights
of a typical Yucatecan kitchen come
from a mouth-watering mixture of
European and Mexican flavors.
Another option is the typical Mexican
food with delicious char-grilled meats
with a variety of different sauces to
try. Many Cancun restaurants offer
fresh lobster as their specialty. If you
like seafood, you must try ceviche, a
tropical Mexican specialty featuring
fish or seafood such as shrimp,
octopus or shellfish, with finely
chopped onion, cilantro and tomato.
The unparalleled variety of culinary
choices has led to the creation of
food festivals like The International
Food Fair in Holbox and the Cancún
- Riviera Maya Wine & Food Festival.

Ruinas del Rey
The largest archaeological site in
Cancún is El Rey , located within
walking distance from the Iberostar
Cancún (Blvd. Kukulcán, km.19).
The site is remarkable for the unusual
architecture: two main plazas ending
in two streets. The excavated part
includes forty-seven structures in
a religious and administrative zone
where important ceremonies took
place and the elders of greater stature
in political life lived. This site, dating
back to the second and third centuries
B.C., was an important astronomy
center for the Maya.

Yamil Lu’um
The site consists of two small temples
that were likely used as watchtowers
and lighthouses between 500 and 700
years ago. These ruins are close to
the Westin Lagunamar Hotel.
El Meco
It is located three miles north of
Cancún, near the Puerto Juarez ferry
dock. The settlement was inhabited by
fishermen, as early as the 3rd century
B.C. it was a major commercial port
for the Mayas and remained so until
the Spaniards arrived on the 16th
century. El Meco’s remnants consist
of 14 structures. The centerpiece is

Tulum
It is one of the loveliest archaeological
treasures in México. Sixty impressive
structures, most dating back to the
12th and 15th centuries, mark Tulum,
a walled Mayan fortress and the only
city the Maya built on the coast and
one of the few to still be occupied
when the Spaniards arrived in the 16th
century. More than 60 well-preserved
structures can be observed within
three massive walls that surround
the site. Two of the more important
buildings are El Castillo (The Castle),
and the Temple of the Descending
God. A number of sinkholes around
Tulum are easily
accessible.

This was once one of the leading city-states in the entire Mayan Empire.
Archaeologists believe approximately 6,500 structures still shrouded by
thick jungle. In fact, only 5 percent
of the site has been excavated. This
once great city is now being extensively studied for the first time. Built
between two lakes during the Classic
Period (300-900 A.D.), Cobá was at
one time a very large city with nearly
50,000 inhabitants and extended over
80 square km. The structures have
been classified into different groups:
The Cobá group, The Nohoch-Mul
group with a the tallest pyramid in
the Yucatán Peninsula, 42 meters tall
(138 feet), the Mecanxoc group and
the Group “D”. Much of the site is still
unearthed, giving visitors an “Indiana
Jones” type experience.
Muyil
One of the oldest Mayan is located
15 minutes south of Tulum around a
beautiful blue fresh water lake called
“La Laguna” (the lagoon). Although
surrounded by thick vegetation, visitors are still able to view three temple
groups, “El Castillo” (the castle) 45
feet tall, is one of the tallest structures
in the east coast.

Chichén Itzá
It is located 100 km from Merida and 180 km from Cancún (about 2 hours drive).
Chichén Itzá is one of the largest and most fascinating sites in Mexico, and
is famous worldwide for the phenomenon that occurs twice each year, at the
spring and fall equinoxes in the structure known as “El Castillo” (the Castle).
As the equinox sun sets, a play of light and shadow creates the appearance
of a snake that gradually undulates down the stairway of the pyramid. Another
impressive structures are the Ball Game, the largest found in Mesoamerica, the
Observatory called El Caracol (Snail), and the Warriors Temple. This is place not
to be missed, and plan to spend at least an entire day here.

Ek’Balam
It is located about 65 km west of Chetumal. The road
approaches the site from the north and leads into an
enormous central plaza ringed by pyramids and temple
platforms. Settled in 200 B.C., it contains almost 200
mounds that remain largely unexcavated. The site is
best known for its Temple of the Masks, an Early Classic
pyramid whose central stairway is flanked
by huge humanized stucco masks.
It is located 51 km northeast of Chichén Itzá and 30 km
north of Valladolid. Ek’ Balam was at its height from A.D.
770 to 840, contains 45 structures and provides a rich
resource of information for understanding northern Classic
cities. Some of the notable features are: the Entrance Arch,
the Oval Palace and the Ball Game.
In addition there are nearby colonial cities, including
Valladolid, a “Pueblo Mágico” (Magic Town) not far from
Cancún, as well as 18thcentury haciendas, ex-convents,
and fine museums. Cancún is a top choice for those
looking to explore Mexico’s enthralling past.

The modern white building seems perfectly at home in the heart of
Cancun’s bustling Hotel Zone. The museum’s collection includes
350 archeological artifacts showcased in two exhibition halls
covering over 13,000 square feet. The first room is dedicated to
the Mayan population of Quintana Roo. The second room explains
Mayan culture on a whole, featuring Mayan architecture, art, and
other artifacts that made up Mayan’s everyday life. You can see
14,000-year-old Mayan remains discovered in Tulum’s underwater
caves to the 10,000-year-old remains of the Woman of the Palms,
tools, sculptures and jewelry. There is a third hall featuring a
temporary exhibit that changes from time to time.
After surveying the museum, wander outside to see the San
Miguelito archaeological site which is adjacent to it, and contains
some forty structures classified into groups: The Great Pyramid,
a 26 foot structure; The South, comprising of residential units,
palace-style building and small altars; and Dragons – named
in the 1970’s after an area where snake heads were found and
mistaken for dragon heads - in this area stands a temple adorned
with fragments of ancient mural paintings of animals and marine
elements. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to
18:00 hrs.

A destination waiting to be discovered
Puerto Morelos is only a short 25-minute drive from
Cancún’s international airport and Hotel Zone; it is the
departure point when traveling to the “Cenotes” Route or
other adventures in the Mayan world.
Set in a rustic atmosphere, but with the same quality as
Cancun, Puerto Morelos offers a wide selection of cuisines
where the highlight is the catch of the day. It also offers
everything from boutique hotels to large international
chains.
Snorkeling and scuba diving are two of the main
experiences offered by this picturesque town, thanks to
the great Mayan Reef, which is located only 1,640 feet
from its calm beaches. The most recommended spots for
scuba diving are: “Cuevones”, “La Pared”, “La Bocana”,
“El Túnel”, “Los Jardines” and the Mexican naval ship, the
C-56 Juan Escutia.

Cultural activities and music festivals are held in the
main square, such as the “International Seafront Theatre
Festival” in April and the “International Deep Sea Fishing
Tournament” at the end of May.
Puerto Morelos also has other attractions such as
the Botanical Garden, 150-acres of lush jungle and
mangrove trees where you can admire colorful birds,
sunning iguanas and playful spider monkeys, as well as
some Mayan ruins; there is also a re-created chiclero
camp. The “Crococun”Zoo, where the region’s flora and
fauna such as crocodiles and orchids can be observed.
And Xoximilco, a modern version of the legendary cruise
through the canals, with the colors and the ambiance of
fiesta, music and tradition.

Cenotes R oute
For adventure lovers, Puerto Morelos is the departure
point for a unique adventure. Near Puerto Morelos there
are many cenotes and underground rivers, so you can
travel into the jungle, either walking or by bicycle, on
horseback, or ATVs. There are fun activities for all ages,
from your youngest to adventurous teenagers or adults,
like snorkeling, zip lines or scuba diving.
Cenote Las Mojarras. This a great sinkhole located in the
Parque Cenote Las Mojarras. It is 65 meters in diameter
and 14 meters deep and has a double zip line and
double tower to jump into the water. There are restrooms,
hammocks, picnic area, and camping areas.
Cenote Siete Bocas. This is a great place, a wonderful
cenote as it is shaped by rock formations dating back
million of years. Inside, you can swim or float through
the cave, with its spectacular stalagmites and stalactites
The whole area used to be well-known for its natural gum
(chicle) camps in the middle of the jungle.
Cenote Boca del Puma. It is located in a magical ecological
reserve in the heart of the Mayan Riviera. At Bocan del
Puma you can experience a real jungle adventure filled
with history and culture, as well as some fun activities like?
snorkel, zip line, ATV’s, and a natural gum village. Opens
daily from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.
34

Cenote Verde Lucero. Easy walk from where you park your
vehicles. You walk down some stone steps to a lower tier
and you find a set of wooden steps that leads down about
20 feet/6 meters down to an enormous swimming hole with
clear turquoise water and seemingly no bottom
the water. The maximum depth is 66 feet/20 meters. Look
for the freshwater turtles that make their home here. Opens
daily from 9:00 to 17:00 hrs.
Chilam Balam. The perfect place for an exciting ATV ride,
in a natural enviroment. At the end of the ride you can
cool off in a beautiful cenote where you can dive, swim or
snorkel.
Kin Ha. It is a close cenote ideal for diving. There is an
eco-park that has guided tours to the two crystal clear
cenotes, three zip lines high above the jungle floor and off
road vehicles through the thick jungle.
La Noria. This cenote is part of the “Tres reyes(3 Kings)”
group of cenotes. This is a favorite for cave divers since
it is 18 meters deep and 47 meters wide, but it is also a
nice place to swim. It is also well known among cycling
enthusiasts.
Zapote. This lagoon type cenote is approximately 120 feet
in diameter and is wide open. The water is green, cool and
transparent with small fish. To enter the cenote you may
use the steps, or to add to the fun we recommend you use
the “Mayan Zip Line” which is 6 feet high.

Cave of the
Sleeping Shark
Manchones Reef
Just 30 minutes off Isla Mujeres
lies a very unique place, which has
baffled marine biologists everywhere,
because sharks must be in constant
motion in order to breathe, but this
cave had an extremely high amount
of oxygen and reduced salinity, so
the sharks can “sleep” completely
still. This astounding adventure is
recommended for more experienced
divers as the cave can be reached
between 65 and 100 feet (20 to 30
meters).
This breathtaking reef is about 10
minutes by boat from Isla Mujeres.
Along with spectacular coral
formations and a rich marine life, this
reef is home to MUSA, an underwater
sculpture museum with more than
400 life-size sculptures. It’s one of
the most popular local dive tours for
divers of all levels.
El Garrafón
The Cross of the Bay
This natural park, 30 minutes by boat
from Cancun, is a terrestrial paradise
of reefs, cliffs and ocean landscapes.
Here you will enjoy water activities
like kayaking, snorkeling, as well as
adventure activities like hiking, biking
and flying over the turquoise waters of
the Caribbean on a zip line.
A bronze cross was placed on
Manchones Reef as part of the
celebration of the island’s foundation
(1857). The cross is 3 meters (10
ft) high, weighs almost a ton and is
twelve meters under the sea; it was
placed here as a memorial to those
who have lost their lives at sea.
Hacienda Mundaca
Hacienda Mundaca was built by
Fermín Mundaca de Marecheaga,
a pirate and slave trader, for a
local woman known as La Trigueña
(Brunette). It is located on the road to
Garrafon, 3.5 kilometers (2.17 miles)
and you can have a pleasant stroll
in the shady grounds while you learn
more about the legends of the place.
Punta Sur
At the southern point of the island
there is a lighthouse, the remains
dramatically perched over cliffs,
of a temple dedicated to Ixchel,
Maya goddess of the moon and
fertility, and a sculpture garden. You
can walk on the paths to see the
contemporary works of 23 sculptors
from different countries among which
are: Sebastian, Devin Laurence Field,
Ingo Ronkholz and Omar Rayo. There
is a little bar/restaurant where you
can get a cold beer and some good,
inexpensive food.

A seductive combination of charm and nature
The island is separated from the mainland coast of Mexico
by a shallow lagoon, which gives sanctuary to thousands
of flamingos, pelicans and a wide diversity of marine life. It
is an island, approximately 2.5 miles long and 1 mile wide.
The water is clear and shallow several hundred yards
offshore, ideal for wading and collecting the abundant
seashells.
Holbox can be reached from Cancun by taking a two-hour
trip by road to Chiquilá village, where ferries depart to the
island between 5:00 and 19:00 hrs.
Isla Holbox offers 53 rustic styled boutique hotels,
which accentuate the island’s tranquil atmosphere and
lifestyle. There are lodging establishments that are
defined as ecological, since they operate using only
natural resources. The hotels on this island typically offer
personalized service and local flair in intimate settings.
Small restaurants that serve the catch of the day, conch,
lobster, octopus and Mexican dishes complement these
magnificent tourist services.

In Holbox the common transport are: bicycles, motorcycles
and golf carts. The island’s beaches are perfect for
beginners to learn how to kiteboard. Additionally, the
island’s calm waters are perfect for kayaking, fly-fishing
and snorkeling.
Visitors to Holbox are able to swim with whale sharks, a
once-in-a-lifetime experience available in very few parts of
the world from June to September. The beautiful beaches
of the island are the spawning ground of green sea turtles
during the months of August to September. Local fishermen
will take visitors out to fish or snorkel, to see the flamingo
nesting grounds at the Ría Lagartos Nature Reserve,
from April to October. The Island hosts the annual Holbox
International Public Arts Festival every February. This
event provides local and international artists the space to
create a series of beautiful murals. In October, the annual
Holbox Gastronomic Festival showcases the best of island
cuisine to tourists from Mexico and the world.

Places you can’t miss around Isla Holbox
It is a wonderful place for nature admirers and is often
called “the fountain of youth.” You can appreciate the
large natural pool surrounded by plants, trees and shrubs,
as well as the dolphins that come to this lagoon in the
mornings to eat, and the flamingoes during the day.
Cabo Catoche, another small island off the waters of
Holbox. You can enjoy the singular beauty of this place
and snorkel among colorful exotic fish, dolphins and sea
turtles.
Boca Iglesia, it is located right where the Gulf of Mexico
and the Caribbean Sea meet. A journey through history
in the midst of nature, a lone church and nunnery sit on
a small hill overlooking Boca Iglesia. Here, in the early
1500s the Spanish conquerors built what is probably the
Isla Pasión, is a small island only 15 minutes by boat from
Downtown Holbox. Isla Pasion is a great place to enjoy
the beaches, palm trees and birds in their natural habitat.
Isla Pájaros, or Bird Island, a small mangrove covered
islands located on the Yalahau lagoon, where there is a
large diversity of birds, including some that are in danger
of extinction. There are also two observation points and
walkways on the island created to minimize contact with
the birds.
Yalahau Lagoon, and its famous fresh water spring are
located about 30 minutes from Holbox. In ancient times
this cenote was an important harbor for Maya traders.
first church in Latin America, and now, trees and vines
overrun it. There are no easy roads, so the best way to get
here is by boat.
Ekab, it was a pre-Hispanic port. This settlement continued
to be inhabited during the colonial period, but it was
abandoned for the continuous pirate incursions.
Also available from Holbox are tours to Solferino, a Mayan
village, and the Corchal located 30 minutes from the island
near the Yum-Balam Biosphere Reserve. This region is an
important wetland known for its cork trees, Bromeliads
and Orchids.
