With this questioning technique, you will build acquisition of the target vocab, verb negation,
and question words. Coach your class to play along and answer out loud so that you will
know if they understood and they will learn more Spanish.
After I do the above Q&A, I do a quick 30-second or so “Verbal Fill in the Blank.” I say something
like this:
Hay un muchacho. El muchacho se llama _________ (they say “Troy.”) Troy toca la
_____________ (guitarra.) Troy va a la casa de ________ (Jill.) En la casa de Jill, Troy toca la
_____________ (guitarra) románticamente. Troy le da una _______ (flor.) Jill no está
________(contenta.) Jill grita, ____ (No.) Troy _________ (motion “va” and see if they will get it…) a
la casa de ________ (Amanda.) Troy ________ (motion “toca” and see if they get it…) la guitarra
muy románticamente. (etc.)
My students really enjoy this if I ham it up, re-enact the story, and do the motions, and I think that the
two extra times through the story really helps them acquire the words. Make it fast and fun though or
they will get whiny.
