STEP 1 PLACEMENT OF HAND TRUCK a. Place the hand truck on a bench or table positioned with the nose tip down and wheels upward. STEP 2 BRAKE MOUNTING BRACKET ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figure 1) a. Remove both wheels, by removing the hubcaps (815 wheel only) and cotter pins. Save wheel washers for reassembly. New cotter pins are provided with your bracket kit. b. Install a flanged bearing in each brake mounting bracket (locate the bearing with the flange on the outside surface of the bracket and in the correct hole wheel diameter being used). The bearings can be driven into the brackets with a rawhide faced mallet or a steel hammer using a wooden block to protect the face of the bearing. c. Locate one aluminum brake mounting bracket on the inner surface of a wheel bracket. Align the holes in the wheel bracket with the slots in the brake mounting bracket and secure with two 5/16 - 18 NC x 1" long hex head bolt, flat washers and nylon locking nuts (bolt heads to be on the outside surface of the wheel bracket). FINGER TIGHTEN ONLY FOR NOW. d. Repeat step 2c for the second brake mounting bracket. •NOTE• If the hand truck is equipped with C5 Stair Climbers and has 8" wheels use one (1) 5/16 - 18 NC x 1-3/4" long hex head bolts in the upper hole of each brake mounting bracket and use two (2) 5/16 washers between each bracket and stair climber. The stair climber will now be attached in the lower hole for this combination. Extra hardware is included for this purpose. STEP 3 REASSEMBLY OF THE WHEELS a. Slide a washer (saved from step #2) over one end of the axle. b. Slide a wheel onto the axle. Make sure the long hub portion is next to the wheel bracket. c. Slide a second washer onto the axle and insert a new cotter pin (furnished with the brake kit) through the hole on the end of the axle and secure the pin by spreading the ends apart. d. If using 815 type wheels reinstall the hub cap by tapping in place. e. Repeat steps (4a) through (4d) for the second wheel. STEP 4 BRAKE SHAFT ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figure 1) a. Slide the D-shaped brake shaft through the holes of the right hand brake mounting bracket (the right hand is determined when standing in back of the hand truck). DO NOT pass the shaft through the second brake mounting bracket at this time. NOTE: If using 10" wheels, use the upper hole in the bracket. For 8" wheels, use the lower hole in the bracket. b. On the shaft between the brake mounting brackets, slide the lever arm assembly and then the rotational stop assembly as shown. NOTE: The round collar on the rotational stop needs to be toward the center of the hand truck. Slide the end of the brake shaft through the second brake. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE SCREWS IN EITHER THE LEVER ARM OR ROTATIONAL STOP AT THIS TIME. c. Slide a 1-1/4" long tubular spacer onto each end of the shaft. 3 d. Rotate the brake shaft so the lever arm is facing the truck frame. With the long leg of the brake pad facing the rear, install a brake pad on each end of the brake shaft. Insert a cotter pin through the hole on each end of the shaft and secure by spreading the ends of each cotter pin apart. e. Adjust the brake mounting brackets by placing one (1) 3/16" x 1-1/2" x 2" aluminum wheel spacer between each brake pad and wheel. Now slide the brake mounting brackets along the wheel brackets until each brake pad is equally spaced from each wheel. Equal spacing is important to prevent the hand truck pulling to one side during braking operation. Tighten the brake mounting brackets at this time. (TIGHTEN TO 120-140 INCH LBS.) (Refer to figure 2). STEP 5 HANDLE ASSEMBLY (Refer to Figure 3) a. Locate the two handle mounting bracket pieces around the hand truck handle. (NOT applicable to vertical loop, #15 handle series.) Secure the bracket by placing a 1/4"-20 NC x 1" round head bolt and nut using the bracket hole nearest the hand truck handle. NOTE: The brake lever may be attached for either right or left hand use. b. Insert the 3/8" O.D. x 5/16" long tubular spacer into the handle and grip assembly, locate the handle with the spacer in the handle bracket and secure with a 1/4" - 20 NC x 1" long round head bolt and nylon locking nut. FINGER TIGHTEN BOLTS ONLY AT THIS TIME. STEP 6 BRAKE ROD ASSEMBLY a. The kit contains three (3) rods, 8", 29" and 31" long. They should be used as follows: 29" length = 10" wheels with #11 handle - continuous loop #12 handle - continuous loop with brace #16 handle - double grips with brace #30 handle - welded double grip 31" length = 8" wheels with #11 handle - continuous loop #16 handle - double grips with brace #12 handle - continuous loop with brace #30 handle - welded double grip The 8" length with coupling nut is to be joined to either of the above lengths when used with a vertical loop (#15) handle. b. Place (1) stop nut (1/4" - 28 NF Plain) and a yoke on each end of the brake actuating rod. The bottom yoke should have approximately 1/2" of threaded rod extending through it. NOTE: The stop nut must be placed on the rod before the yoke. c. Using the 1/4" - 20 NC x 1-1/8" long round head bolts attach one yoke to the brake lever hole nearest the brake shaft. Attach the second yoke to the brake handle. FINGER TIGHTEN ONLY FOR NOW. STEP 7 HANDLE AND BRAKE ROD ADJUSTMENTS a. Move and position the brake lever and bracket to allow convenient grip of the handle during use. TIGHTEN BOTH HANDLE BRACKET BOLTS SECURELY AT THIS TIME (50-60 INCH LBS). b. If necessary remove the upper yoke end from the handle and adjust to allow approximately 1" of travel between the hand truck handle and brake lever. c. Tighten the bolts securing both yoke ends, DO NOT over tighten, components must pivot on either end for brake to function properly. d. Screw the brake rod into the lower yoke end to make contact with the lever arm and prevent the brake pads from dragging on the wheels when not in use. TIGHTEN THE STOP NUTS ON BOTH YOKE ENDS. e. Slide the rotational stop to the left AGAINST the brake mounting bracket. Apply slight pressure to the brake handle to remove all slack and tighten the set screws in the lever arm, rotational stop and both brake pads. STEP 8 TIGHTEN ALL LOOSE NUTS AND BOLTS AT THIS TIME 1/4" hardware to 50-60 inch lbs. 5/16 to 120-140 inch lbs. STEP 9 FINAL ADJUSTMENT The brake can be adjusted to the users needs, from a slight slowing action to a quick grabbing action, this is done by moving the aluminum brake brackets. To increase the braking action move the brackets upward to increase the distance between the wheels and the brake pads, to decrease the action, decrease the distance between the wheels and the brake pads. The wheels DO NOT need to be removed to adjust the brake brackets. The brackets must be adjusted so the brake pads are equal distance from each wheel, if not, the brakes will have a tendency to pull the hand truck to one side. Some readjustment may be necessary on the brake handle rod, refer to step (7) for this procedure. PASO 1 COLOCAR LA CARRETILLA DE MANO a. 4 PASO 3 MONTAR DE NUEVO LAS RUEDAS a. PASO 6 MONTAR LA BARRA DE FRENO a. Si fuera necesario reajustar la barra de la manivela de freno, vaya al paso (7). 5 WARRANTY INFORMATION INFORMACIÓN SOBRE LA GARANTÍA Magline One-Year Limited Warranty Garantía limitada de un año Magline Magliner products have a one (1) year warranty from the date of purchase against defects in workmanship or material.
