THE GIFT OF
GOD’S WORD
On this day of gifts
and gift-giving, it seems
appropriate that we take a
moment to reflect on the
great gift of God’s Word.
Because it is creative,
God’s Word always points to its author, always
calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God’s
Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous,
the transcendent with the immanent, the divine
with the human. Because it is graceful, God’s
Word establishes a relationship of deep
intimacy between us and God.
At the heart of God’s Word lies a
tantalizing tension between the mysterious and
the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this
unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of
life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon
that meaning.
Once accepted and opened, the gift of
God’s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and
keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us
to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for
others, not only at Christmas, but at every
moment of life.

O God, kindly watch over those
exposed to the dangers of military
life. Give them such strong faith
that nothing may ever lead them to
deny it or fear to practice it.
Fortify them by your grace against
the contagion of bad example, so that, preserved
from vice and serving you faithfully, they may be
ready to meet death if it should come. Most
Sacred Heart of Jesus, inspire them with sorrow
for sin and grant them pardon.
Mary, our Mother, be with them in
battle, and should they be called
upon to make the supreme sacrifice,
obtain for them the grace to die in
the love of your Divine son.
Saint Joseph, pray for them.
Amen.

To celebrate the Christmas

see
the
Radio

Christmas Spectacular. The students
were able to enjoy a wonderful day in
the City and experience an amazing
show. The 6th and 7th graders went to
see the play “A Christmas Carol” and
were able to ask questions of the
actors and stagehands. Also, OLOP
actors, singers, and musicians put on
our annual Christmas Concert with
holiday songs from the chorus and
band and the Christmas play, “The

The angel told the shepherds
that the Savior was born and
where to find him. How and when are we
told?
God reveals divine presence in the smile
of another, in someone’s generous offer, in a
plea for help, in the cry of the poor and
oppressed, in a child needing reassurance, in
the aged needing a listening ear, in the sick
needing a comforting hand. We reach out to
one another with God’s compassion, mercy,
forgiveness and healing love. Today we see
not a Baby in the manger, but a saving God
working through and among us.
This Christmas through your gifts the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to
bring Christ to the hearts of the poor. By
assisting fourteen families with holiday gifts
and necessities and several others with rent
and utility arrears. THANK YOU FOR YOUR
GENEROSITY. May your homes be filled
with the peace and joy of this holiday season.
Merry Christmas and a very happy and
healthy New Year!

From Fr. Chris N
The time of waiting and expectation has ended. If we have done our homework and
Prepared the Way of the Lord…that long bumpy and pot-hole riddled road to our hearts, than
Jesus Christ our Savior has been born in our hearts. This is the one thing that Christ wants
from us: to be re-born in the hearts of those who believe in him. We, the Church, are his
legacy, we are his family. Today we celebrate Emmanuel: God is with us. Perhaps over the
next two weeks, the duration of the Christmas liturgical Season we can reflect on the meaning
of Emmanuel and thank our God for the greatest give anyone can give….the gift of oneself. I
am sure that during this holiday season much time, money, and patience has been spent
looking for and buying all those perfect gifts for family and friends and this is all part of the
season; however the best gift of all is the gift of one’s presence and this is the gift that God
gives us today.
I want to thank all the people of St. John of God…this is a wonderful
community in so many ways. I pray that God continues to bless all of
you and your families. I pray that we all recognize that one singular gift
that our God gives us: our Savior and our Lord Jesus Christ.
God’s Blessings Always, Fr. Chris N.
