RE:
IMMUNIZATION, TUBERCULOSIS CLEARANCE AND ORAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT
REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTERING TK/KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS
Polio & DTaP: Effective July 1, 1999, in accordance with AB 381, children entering TK/kindergarten are now
required to have 4 doses of polio vaccine (3 doses meet requirement if at least one dose was given on or after the
fourth* birthday) and 5 doses of DTP or DTaP (4 doses meet requirement if at least one dose was given on or after the
fourth* birthday).
Measles: TK/kindergarten entrants will need 2 doses of measles-containing vaccine, at least one of which must be
MMR (i.e., one dose of mumps and rubella still required). Both must be received on or after the first birthday.**
Children who have just received their first dose of MMR may enter TK/kindergarten on the condition they receive a
2nd dose of measles-containing vaccine 1-3 months later.
Hepatitis B: TK/kindergarten entrants will need 3 doses of Hepatitis B vaccine for school admission. Children who
have received at least one dose of Hepatitis B vaccine may enter TK/kindergarten on the condition that they receive the
remaining required doses as follows: 2nd dose 1-2 months after the 1st dose and the 3rd dose 2-6 months after the 2nd
dose and at least 4 months after the 1st dose.
Chicken Pox (Varicella): Beginning July 1, 2002, all students entering TK/kindergarten in both public and private
schools will need to present documentation of varicella (chickenpox) immunization or immunity. Required
documentation will be an immunization record that shows either one dose of varicella vaccine or that the student has
had chickenpox disease (must be documented by doctor).
Oral Health Assessment: TK/kindergarten entrants will need an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31
in either TK/kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his/her first year in public school. The law specifies that the
assessment must be done by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional.
TB Clearance: Effective August 2005, TK/kindergarten entrants must have a TB clearance (i.e., negative skin
test/chest x-ray and/or a doctor’s medical exemption) no more than one year prior to their first day of school
attendance.
CHILDREN WHO ARE NOT IMMUNIZED AND WILL START TK/KINDERGARTEN NEXT FALL
SHOULD BEGIN IMMUNIZATIONS AND TB TESTING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO AVOID THE LASTMINUTE RUSH.
Exemptions: For a medical exemption, the parent should provide a written statement from the child’s medical provider stating
that the vaccines that the child is medically exempt from receivin g. Effective January 1, 2016, CA SB277 no longer permits
immunization exemptions based on personal beliefs for children in child care and public and private schools.
*Change from second birthday.
**Vaccines administered up to 4 days before the minimum interval or age can be counted as valid.

Nuevos Requerimientos de Vacunación para 2016
Estimado(a) Padre/Madre/Tutor(a):
Bajo una nueva ley conocida como SB 277, a partir del 1 de enero de 2016 las exenciones basadas en
creencias personales, incluyendo creencias religiosas, ya no son una opción para las vacunas que
actualmente se requieren para ingresar a una guardería o escuela en California. La mayoría de las familias no se
verán afectadas por la nueva ley porque sus hijos han recibido todas las vacunas requeridas. Exenciones de
creencias personales archivadas para un niño que ya asiste a la guardería o a la escuela seguirán siendo válidas
hasta que el/la niño(a) alcance el siguiente punto de revisión en kindergarten (incluyendo kindergarten transicional)
o séptimo grado.
En circunstancias limitadas, algunos niños que no han recibido una o más de las vacunas requeridas pueden asistir
a la escuela de forma condicional mientras se ponen al día con estas vacunas. Si un(a) niño(a) no ha recibido
ninguna dosis de alguna vacuna requerida, DEBE recibir una primera dosis antes de su admisión. Los estudiantes
que entran a TK/kindergarten o séptimo grado que no han recibido todas las dosis de vacunas que se deben tener
actualmente, no serán admitidos o asignados a una clase hasta que hayan recibido todas las dosis que debe tener
actualmente. Las inscripciones tardes, debido a la falta de vacunas requeridas, también pueden ser sujetas a las
provisiones de cambio de escuela, dependiendo de la inscripción en la escuela.
Se permiten las exenciones médicas pero requieren lo siguiente: Un padre o tutor debe entregar una declaración
escrita por un médico titulado (M.D. o D.O.) en un forma del distrito que declare lo siguiente:
 La condición física o circunstancias médicas del niño son tales que las inmunizaciones requeridas que no
se indican.
 Qué vacunas tienen exención.
 Si la exención médica es temporal o permanente.
 Fecha de vencimiento, si la exención es temporal.
