With Easter eggs and holidays behind us
we can look forward to the warmer months
ahead and so much to enjoy here on the
Costa Blanca. The resort was bouncing
busy during Easter and the beaches were
packed full of sun seekers getting their
first taste of the 2013 season. Although
traditionally swamped with national
tourists it was a record year for the number
of international visitors and walking
around you would of noticed many
Dutch, British and Norwegian amongst
other nationalities together enjoying the
beaches, bars, cafes and restaurants.
April and May will see the many weekend
groups coming into Benidorm to let their
hair down and enjoy the hundreds of
bars, relaxing around the hotel pools or
beach during the day in preparation for
the “Benidorm Big Night Out” the concept
of a organised bar crawl has hit the streets
over the years and seems to be getting
more popular. Most offer drinking games
and fun from bar to bar much of it you can
do on your own without the need to be
chaperoned and paying for the benefit!

and buy a special gift. Local stores for
the days before make a special prices
and discounts for the gift ideas.
Apart from giving their mothers a special
gift children also treat their mother to a
special lunch or dinner, the restaurants
in Spain also offer special menus and
prices especially for mother’s day so
that every family can enjoy a good meal
together. Spanish Children like other
children from around the world try to
express their love and gratitude to their
mother on this special day, children
are also encouraged to take over some
chores and household work something
that most mothers would welcome!

Karting Mad
7 year old Nico Lavery started Go
Karting as a hobby in September 2012,
and it was quickly noticed he has a raw
talent and passion for the sport.
He was soon picked up by a local race
team at the Go Karting track in Finestrat
and since then has been in training 5
times a week to prepare for the Copa De
Valles competition which starts on the
27th April 2013.
He is currently training with the JL LOPEZ
driving school which is part of the Martin
Rofo team.
Vista are proud to become his latest
sponsor and will be following him over his
coming races.
His family are working hard to find
sponsors to help this very expensive sport

Altea
History
Altea is a town and
municipality located in the
province of Alicante, Spain,
north of Benidorm on the
section of Mediterranean

coast called the Costa Blanca.
At present, the economy of
Altea is based on tourism,
which started to grow in the
1950s because of its good
weather, beaches and the
labyrinthine streets with
whitewashed house-fronts
that characterize the town.
Altea is protected on the
north by the bluffs of the
Serra de Bèrnia, creating an
especially mild microclimate.
Its seafront esplanade is
planted with palms. The
Iberian coastal settlements
at the mouth of the Algar
river in the wide Bay of Altea
were later joined by a Greek
marketplace, named Althaia.
During the Moorish
domination the land around
Altea belonged to the Taifa of
Dénia until it was recaptured
by the Christians in 1244
under James I of Aragon. The
town was quickly fortified,
and walls were erected to
enclose what is now known
as the “old town” from
outsiders.
This maze of cobbled narrow
and crooked streets with
glimpses of the bay is one
of the better features of the
town

Norwegian Constitution Day is the
National Day of Norway and is an
official national holiday observed on
May 17 each year.
Among Norwegians, the day is referred
to simply as syttende mai (meaning
May Seventeenth), Nasjonaldagen (The
National Day) or Grunnlovsdagen–
The Constitution of Norway was signed at
Eidsvoll on May 17 in the year 1814. The
constitution declared Norway to be an
independent nation.
The celebration of this day began

in August 1814) and for some years
the King of Sweden and Norway was
reluctant to allow the celebrations. For
a couple of years in the 1820s, King Karl
Johan actually forbade it, as he thought
the celebrations a kind of protest and
disregard—even revolt—against Swedish
sovereignty.[1] The king’s attitude
changed slightly after the Battle of the
Square in 1829, an incident which resulted
in such a commotion that the king had
to allow it. It was, however, not until
1833, that anyone ventured to hold a
public address on behalf of the day. That
year, official celebration was initiated

Christian Krohg, known to have stopped
the king from gaining too much personal
power. The address was held by Henrik
Wergeland, thoroughly witnessed and
accounted for by a Swedish spy, sent by
the king himself.
After 1864 the day became more
established when the first children’s
parade was launched in Christiania, at
first consisting only of boys. This initiative
was taken by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson,
although Wergeland made the first known
children’s parade at Eidsvoll around 1820.
It was only in 1899 that girls were allowed
to join in the parade for the first time.

The Family Medical
Centre Continues to
Grow
So, what’s new at
the Family Medical
Centre, Albir?
Well firstly F.M.C.’s resident
G.P. affectionately know as
‘Dr.An’ has been joined by
3 other G.P.’s enabling more
flexibility for patients. Also,
to help patients the clinic
has continued to open on
Thursday evenings and
Saturday mornings. These
extended opening hours
have proved to be popular
with those who are busy
working during the day.
Obstetric / Gynaecology
The F.M.C. is pleased to
welcome Dr.Walter van
Harmelen to their team of
specialists. Dr. Walter is a
Dutch gynaecologist who has
been practicing on the Costa
Blanca since 2008. He speaks
fluent English, Spanish,
German and of course
Dutch. He offers specialist
consultations including onsite ultra sound scans. Minor
surgical procedures can also
be performed in the medical
centre thus saving patients
trips to hospital.
Physiotherapy / Osteopathy
F.M.C.’s renowned
physiotherapist Joan
McLellen is now joined by
Physiotherapist / Osteopath
Simon Ratcliffe. Simon is
fluent in both English and
Spanish and his Dutch is
improving every day since
working with Dutch patients!
Therapists
The F.M.C. also have
welcomed ‘on board’ two first
class therapists:
Ulf Lidman is Swedish but has
spent many years practicing
in the U.S.A. as a Cognitive
Behavioural Therapist. He
has a specialist interest in
addiction therapy treating
patients suffering from
alcohol, prescription drugs,
recreational drugs, gambling
and sex addictions. As well as
his native Swedish he speaks
fluent English, Norwegian
and Dutch.
Grahame Milton-Jones
gained his professional
qualifications as a
Psychotherapist in the U.K.
and has been a practicing
on the Costa Blanca for
10 years. Grahame treats
patients with a wide range
of emotional problems
including anxiety and panic

attacks, low self esteem
and confidence problems,
depression, relationship
problems, bereavement,
and phobias. He also
treats patients for smoking
cessation and weight control.
When appropriate he uses
hypnotherapy as part of his
treatments.

All therapy sessions with
either Ulf or Grahame are
conducted in the relaxed,
friendly and confidential
environment of the Family
Medical Centre.
Priority for Amanda and
Dawn (clinic owners) has
always been that the Family
Medical Centre should
be affordable for people.
Therefore since opening in
2011 they have not increased
their fees and continue
to charge just 38 Euros
for G.P., Nurse or Midwife
consultations. This makes
private health care at the
Family Medical Centre within
reach of most people.

El centro de salud familiar
continúa creciendo
¿Qué novedad hay en
el centro médico del
Albir?
Bueno en primer lugar, el
médico de familia del centro de
salud conocida familiarmente
como “Doctora An” se le han
unido otros tres médicos de
cabecera y así facilitar una
mayor flexibilidad horaria para
los pacientes. También, con el
fin de ayudar a los pacientes,
el centro continúa abierto los
jueves por la noche y los sábados
por la mañana. Esta ampliación
horaria ha sido bien recibida por
los pacientes que trabajan por
el día
Obstetricia / Ginecología.
El centro de salud da la
bienvenida al Doctor Walter
van Harmelen a su equipo de
especialistas. El doctor Walter
es un ginecólogo holandés que
ha ejercido en la zona de Costa
Blanca desde el año 2008. Habla
con fluidez el inglés, el español,

el alemán y por supuesto el
holandés. Ofrece consultas
especializadas entre ellas las
exploraciones ultrasónicas.
También se puede realizar
procedimientos quirúrgicos de
menor índole en el centro de
salud y así ahorrarles el viaje al
hospital a los pacientes.
Fisioterapia / Osteopatía
Al conocido fisioterapeuta del
centro de salud Joan McLellen
se le ha unido el fisioterapeuta
y osteópata Simon Ratcliffe.
Simon habla con fluidez tanto
el inglés como el español. Y su
holandés cada día va mejorando
desde que trabaja con pacientes
holandeses.
a pacientes adictos al alcohol,
medicamentos recetados,
drogas, juegos de azar y a
adicciones sexuales. Además de
hablar su nativo sueco, habla
con fluidez el inglés, el noruego
y el holandés.
Grahame Milton- Jones obtuvo
su título profesional como
psicoterapeuta en el Reino
Unido y lleva ejerciendo en
la zona de La Costa blanca
durante 10 años. Graham
trata una gran variedad de
problemas emocionales como
la ansiedad, ataques de pánico,
baja autoestima y problemas
de confianza, depresión,
problemas de pareja, duelo y
fobias. También trata a pacientes
que quieren dejar de fumar,
o quieren controlar su peso.
Cuando el caso lo requiere,
utiliza la hipnoterapia como
parte de sus tratamientos.
Todas las sesiones de terapia,
ya sea con Ulf o con Grahame
se llevan a cabo en el centro de
salud en un ambiente relajado,
amistoso y confidencial.
Lo primordial para Amanda y
Dawn (dueños de la clínica)
siempre ha sido que el centro
médico debe estar al alcance de
la gente. Por lo tanto, desde su
apertura en el año 2011 no han
aumentado sus tarifas y siguen
cobrando tan sólo 38€ por
médico de cabecera, enfermera
o consulta médica. Esto hace que
la sanidad privada en el centro
de salud familiar esté al alcance
de la mayoría de la gente.
Terapeutas
El centro de salud también da la
bienvenida “a su embarcación” a
dos excelentes terapeutas:
