These combined sponsored events are a joint collaboration of the BHC, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Mexican Secretariat of Health and Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, the Health Initiative of the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the ten U.S. and México Border States, and the U.S.-México Border Health Association (USMBHA). The theme of “Families in Action for Health” provided a special focus for family and community involvement in the promotion of health along the border and promoting sustainable partnerships. Dr. Lindsey was also appointed to Governor Richardson’s Pain Advisory Council. He received his doctor of osteopathic medicine from Michigan State University. The United States–México Border Health Commission would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Tom. G. Lindsey for his service as a member of the U.S. Section of the Commission for the state of New Mexico. Dr. Lindsey is a board-certified general surgeon and emergency room physician. He is the Chairperson of the New Mexico Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners, and a member of the American Dr. Lindsey was instrumental in generating attention to the problem of lead contamination from candy and traditional pottery. This led to the development of a binational work group on lead and to the development of the U.S. Border Lead Outreach Project that was coordinated by the California Office of Binational Border Health (COBBH). Additional technical reports on lead in traditional pottery and candy are undergoing final review before publication. The Commission will miss his contributions as a U.S. Section Member. We wish Dr. Lindsey the very best. The Border Health Commission Welcomes Mauricio Leiva The BHC would like to welcome its newest member, Mauricio E. Leiva. Mr. Leiva has worked for State government for over 25 years. Immediately preceding the appointment to Chief of the California Office of Binational Border Health, Mr. Leiva worked as Assistant Division Chief for the Employment Development Department (EDD) Disability Insurance Branch, where he managed the implementation of Program Policies, the Disability Insurance Training Program, the Legislative Analysis Unit and a Quality Control section that monitors the delivery of quality products designed to improve customer services. Prior to that Mr. Leiva served as the State Monitor Advocate for California. In that role he served as the liaison between EDD and the United States Department of Labor on matters related to the protection of farm worker rights and monitored compliance with federal and state labor laws. Mr. Leiva has extensive experience in health program management. For several years, he worked as the Rural Health Manager for The Managed Risk Medical Insurance Board, where he managed a network of contracts between Health and Dental Insurance plans and rural clinics in some of the most remote areas of California. Mr. Leiva earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice/Political Science and a Master’s Degree in Education from California State University, Sacramento. Mr. Leiva served nearly a decade as an Adjunct Professor of Government and Political Science at DQ University, in Winters, California, working primarily with migrant students. Today, the México Section of the United States–México Border Health Commission is pleased to announce the first Podcast episode “Health without Borders.” A “podcast” is an archived audio file that can be downloaded very easily onto your computer through an Ipod or MP3 device. The contents are diverse and offers a creative way to promote health prevention, providing attention to health issues at the U.S.–México border.
