Octava producción teatral del BRITÁNICO
VOLPONE
de Ben Jonson
El BRITÁNICO estrena su octava producción teatral con una divertida comedia del
dramaturgo inglés Ben Jonson, adaptada a la Lima del Siglo XVIII.
En esta adaptación, Alberto Isola interpreta a Volpone, un noble limeño dueño de
abundantes riquezas que finge estar en su lecho de muerte con el fin de engañar
a los que desean heredarlo, valiéndose para ello de su sirviente parásito, el astuto
Mosca, interpretado por Carlos Carlín. Para conseguir tan honorable lugar en el
corazón de Volpone, sus ambiciosos amigos tendrán que desembolsar no solo
parte de sus propias fortunas, sino también su dignidad, el amor de sus hijos y el
honor de sus esposas.
Con esta comedia ambientada en la colonia y en la que interviene hasta el Virrey
Amat, los peruanos podrán reírse de sí mismos al ver los acontecimientos de esta
historia.

There are some experiences in life you only get to live once, even if you make it back to
the same place afterwards. Maybe this trip to London is one of those. Needless to say, I
experienced a wide range of emotions from the very beginning of this journey till its end.
Even though everything was so different from Lima, it was really easy to get used to
London. People are usually very nice and help you out in every way they can. In no way
did I feel uncomfortable when using public transport (the Tube) or strolling into town.
I still remember one occasion when a man voluntarily helped me find my way to the
Science Museum when I had completely lost my way.
There are many places to see, so much to do. No wonder time passed by so fast. Indeed,
I spent my days visiting the famous spots in the city like Madame Tussaud’s, the Houses

of Parliament or the London Eye. However, I reckon that going to places off the beaten
track is great too. I enjoyed witnessing the way the Wimbledon courts and Stamford Bridge Stadium were kept under maintenance
I will never forget the times I got to know different people. Every
encounter was special and different. My housemates, my tutors, my
classmates or even an American guy on a coach to Stonehenge; they
all brightened up my days and taught me many lessons while having
a great time together.
I guess that the worst part was saying goodbye to everything and
everyone. I sometimes feel blue but then I remember something a
friend from Saudi Arabia told me… “Keep rising to the top and you
won’t stop”, which means that this experience in London is not the
end, but the beginning of a great future ahead. Thanks, BRITÁNICO,
for this once in a lifetime experience!

En agosto se llevó a cabo la ceremonia de premiación del Concurso de Fotografía 2009 Por un planeta vivo, organizado por el
BRITÁNICO y con el apoyo del Centro de la Imagen.
En esta edición, los ganadores nos brindan su testimonio.
Agradezco al BRITÁNICO y al Centro de la Imagen por cultivar la creatividad y la imaginación en los jóvenes.

Cuando me inscribí en el
Concurso
de
Fotografía
rondaban mi cabeza algunas
ideas, entre ellas tomarles fotos
a unos botes de basura que se
encuentran medio escondidos
(casi acabando la segunda parte del
parque Mariscal Castilla). De hecho,
hice varios intentos con diferentes
escenarios y situaciones, pero
particularmente para esta
foto recuerdo que mi novio
me acompañó en la tarde
al parque con la idea de
fotografiar los tachos. Empecé
a buscar un buen ángulo y me
puse en diferentes posiciones;
fue divertido el hecho de
treparme a un árbol para luego
ir bajando paulatinamente
hasta encontrarme echada en
el suelo.
Enterado del concurso,
cada día, cada hora,
en el ómnibus, en
la universidad, en
el parque, con los
amigos, con la familia,
etc.,
pensaba
y
pensaba, hasta que me
acordé de maravillas
que Dios nos ha dado:
las plantas, y debido a los
magníficos padres que tengo,
que me enseñaron a convivir con
ellas en mi entorno inmediato, fue
justo lo que quise dar a conocer.
Me pareció una muy buena idea
tomar foto a mi fachada y, lo
más grandioso: dar importancia
a las plantas (poco nos importa la
fachada, la falta de seguridad), ya
que son éstas las que absorben el CO2 que contamina
al medio ambiente para luego proporcionar oxígeno, lo más
importante para que exista vida.

El domingo 23 de agosto se realizó el concierto del tenor británico
Paul Potts, ganador del conocido concurso Britain’s Got Talent. El
gran evento se llevó a cabo en el Centro de Convenciones del hotel
María Angola, y el BRITÁNICO fue uno de los auspiciadores.

Mientras iba a mi examen final pensando porque no había
estudiado, un afiche de un concurso del BRITÁNICO llamó mi
atención y lo leí con detenimiento. Siempre veía el afiche, hasta
que un día me animé a participar y traté de idear qué foto sería
buena. En la última semana de entrega traté de tomar las fotos
que tenía pensadas desde un principio; así llegó el jueves y tenía las
fotos, pero no me complacían. Esa noche, echado en mi cama, me
vino a la cabeza una gran idea, una muy buena. Al día siguiente, no
espere más y fui a la casa de un amigo para que fuera el modelo de la
foto, y sin pensarlo dos veces aceptó. Ese día lo pasé con él tomando
varias fotos, y al final escogimos las mejores; pero la mejor fue aquella que se me había
ocurrido una noche antes. Llevé las fotos el último día de entrega, y pensé que si salía mi foto no importaba en qué puesto, ya era
un logro para mí, porque era mi primer concurso y no acostumbraba tomar fotos. Llegó el día de la premiación, y sabía que tal
vez estar ahí ya era algo bueno, pero en verdad lo fue cuando me dieron una mención honrosa, y aún más cuando me nombraron
también el primer puesto. Sin duda, ¡superé mis propias expectativas!

La Embajada Británica, la Cámara Británica y el UK Trade & Investment han firmado un convenio con la Universidad San Ignacio de
Loyola (USIL) para organizar la Semana Mundial del Emprendimiento 2009 en Lima, del 16 al 18 de noviembre; la cual está siendo
auspiciada por el BRITÁNICO y otras instituciones del medio.
El pasado 2 de septiembre se lanzó este evento con una conferencia de prensa en la USIL a la que asistieron representantes de los
principales medios, y que fue liderada por la embajadora británica Catherine Nettleton y el presidente de la Organización Educativa
San Ignacio de Loyola Raúl Diez Canseco Terry.

IELTS celebrates 20th Anniversary
BRITÁNICO: the only authorised centre in Peru.
This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the International
English Language Testing System (IELTS) as the leading
benchmark of English language proficiency for higher
education and migration. Since it was introduced in 1989,
the test has evolved to a truly global product with candidate
numbers growing from a few thousand each year to over 1.2
million in 2008.
There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Candidates are graded on
their performance in the test, using scores from 1 to 9 for
each part – listening, reading, writing and speaking. This
“band scoring” system covers the full range of ability from
non-user to expert user. Results from the four parts are then
combined to produce an overall band score.

Hi! My name is Diana, I am eleven years old. I have
been studying at the Camacho centre since 2006. I
began my studies in Kids 2 when I was eight years
old.
I like studying here because I learn to read and speak
English a lot and it gives me the opportunity to be
the best student in my school. I have also met many
new friends and good teachers who have different personalities but I have
learned a lot with each one.
Finally, going to the BRITÁNICO is the first experience that I have of going to
another place by myself, apart from school. I’m happy to continue studying at
the BRITÁNICO in order to get good marks and, why not?, the scholarship to
England.

My experience at the BRITÁNICO

These six months were a great experience which helped me to
increase my knowledge of the English language and allowed
me to practise it with young people like me, exchanging ideas
and sharing different points of view about current affairs and
general knowledge.

important to succeed in the competitive world we live in
nowadays.
I met new friends and I am sure I will keep in touch with
them. Thanks to all for sharing those months with me. And
of course I want to thanks my teachers as well for guiding me

I will never forget my last day; it was sad to leave those halls
behind, those halls full of people that I now consider part of
my life, but at the same time I felt happy to know that I had
accomplished a huge mission, one of the first in my life.

The Phantom of the Opera
in Lima

The last day of classes last month, the students of Advanced
6 performed “The Phantom of the Opera” . It was a very busy
month for them because apart from studying and preparing
for their exams they met practically every day to practise their
scenes. Thanks to this, the day of the performance was as we
had planned: beautiful costumes, special sounds, music and
period scenery.
Last Saturday, my group from juniors 06 had a nice
communicative activity on a project they had already done
at home… It was about the past. They are currently studying
secondary, and they did their best research to get the most
information about the topic they had chosen freely in
advance. This first important step in teaching Juniors is to get
them excited and maintain that excitement for a period of
time. One of the biggest ways you can do this is encouraging
them and being positive when working with them… and you
will have excellent results.
If they have shown enough interest to participate, go ahead
and get them into the project.
It was definitely a rewarding experience and without a doubt
the best way to say goodbye to the BRITÁNICO.

Independence, and our Junior 7 students prepared a typical
exhibition describing customs, dances and traditions. It was a
great opportunity for them not only to practise what they had
learned, but also to discover much more about our beautiful

Los niños de Kids 2 Sabatino del turno de la mañana
demostraron su creatividad a través del arte, creando
hermosos trabajos manuales; no solo aprendieron
nuevo vocabulario sino que se divirtieron haciéndolo.
Lo que comenzó como una clase de lugares de su
localidad, terminó con la presentación de maquetas;
indudablemente, los niños son muy creativos.

A los que les afanan las series de ciencia ficción no deberían perderse Doctor Who, por BBC Entertainment. Ya todo un
clásico en la TV inglesa (está al aire desde 1963), Doctor Who trata sobre un time traveller (el doctor),
que viaja a través del espacio y tiempo, resolviendo
misterios y enfrentando a peligrosos enemigos de
otros planetas. Este show de culto, según el libro de
Récord Guiness, es la serie de sci fi de mayor duración
al aire del mundo y la que más ganancias ha dejado
en concepto de ventas de DVD, merchandising y
bajadas de capítulos en Itunes.

Mes a mes tratamos de promover la práctica de la artesanía
a través del programa Tiempo libre, que siempre brinda
novedades en diversas áreas y con sencillas técnicas que
permitan apreciar los logros en una sola sesión. Para ello,
contamos con la generosa participación de un grupo de
profesores y la entusiasta presencia de nuestros estudiantes.

En el centro de Surco ofrecimos un taller para la confección
de un calidoscopio y su aplicación en el diseño, en el que los
alumnos crearon formidables estampados multicolores que
los impresionaron gratamente y que —según expresaron—
“no se imaginaban que podían crear”. En San Borja tuvimos
la confección de bellas lamparitas rústicas; que si bien es
cierto tienen un esbozo previo, cada uno le agrega su sello
personal. En Pueblo Libre la sesión de bisutería no solo
tuvo gran acogida por parte de los estudiantes, sino que
demostraron su destreza para realizar modernos juegos de
collar y aretes, así como chaquiras de cascajo de diversas
piedras. En Camacho los alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad

the whole class?
… put into your own words what the teacher or another
student has said?
… recall what you know about a subject by generating terms
and ideas related to it?
If the answer is ‘Yes’, this means that you are using your
thinking to become a skilled learner.
Do not expect to be spoon-fed in class! How do you think
you will learn something more effectively, by discovering and
doing it yourself or by receiving the answers? You have the

Actividades
extracurriculares en el
BRITÁNICO de Miraflores
• Claudia Larrea, Subjefa del centro
Durante este año hemos realizado
diferentes eventos en los que
participaron padres de familia y
alumnos. Sólo para mencionar
algunos, tuvimos el Miraflores In
Action en julio, un Open Day con
Infants 8 en marzo, Joining a Fan
Club en agosto, entre otros.
Así mismo, siguiendo con nuestro desarrollo profesional,
tuvimos los workshops dirigidos a nuestros docentes, tales
como Giving Instructions en febrero y Are We Doing Enough
Pronunciation Practice In Class? en abril.
Ambos tipos de actividades, las dirigidas a nuestros alumnos
y padres de familia y las que colaboran con nuestro bienestar
profesional, son de vital importancia para hacer del BRITÁNICO
de Miraflores no sólo un lugar donde se brinde la mejor
calidad de servicio en cuanto a la enseñanza del inglés como
idioma y cultura, sino también un lugar donde se trabaje
constantemente en equipo para intercambiar y compartir
experiencias valiosas.
Curso Infants
• Dora Cerdán, Teacher
Dirigido a niños de 4 y 5 años que aprenden a través
de juegos, canciones, cuentos, videos, manualidades
y juego de roles. En este curso, los niños aprenden el
inglés de manera lúdica haciendo así que el aprendizaje
sea entretenido; y, para los niños, si es entretenido, es
memorable.

El pasado 22 de agosto papis y mamis de Infants 8 pasaron un
lindo día acompañados de sus pequeños hijos, demostrando así que
ellos también saben hablar inglés y sí que me dejó muy gratamente
sorprendida verlos que no solamente decían palabras sueltas sino
que muchos de ellos se expresaban con fluidez. Fue una sesión muy
divertida con muchos juegos en la que pudimos reciclar todo lo
aprendido durante el curso, y papis y mamis se sintieron orgullosos
de ver a sus niños desenvolviéndose con mucha naturalidad en el
salón de clase. Finalmente se pasó a entregar los certificados y tomar
las fotitos respectivas. Quiero felicitar a todos los 12 papis y mamis,
ya que ninguno faltó a esta cita tan importante, y decirles que fue
muy bonito haber pasado con sus niños más de un año juntos,
sábado a sábado.

La verdad es que no sólo es divertido para ellos; en
lo personal, enseñar Infants es muy ameno. Los niños
sacan esa niña que llevo dentro. La paso muy bien, y
al final de clase es cierto que quedo sin energías, pero
con una satisfacción incalculable.

Make the Walls Speak

We all know that a colourful classroom, full of eye-catching
visuals, provides children with a stimulus for learning and play.
However, we tend to forget that youngsters and even adults may
spend quite a lot of time staring at what surrounds them (either
while thinking or hanging out before class), and how important
it is to study in pleasant surroundings - as if growing up meant
becoming dull.
Teaching English to children is different from teaching
other age groups: children learn easily if they answer
through physical responses to linguistic stimuli, instead
of doing language exercises.
Activities with a very positive effect on children include
storytelling and songs. They exploit children’s curiosity
to find out new things and provide them with language
exposure, a key element in learning. Everything is done
in a way that keeps them involved and active, while
also having a great time working and playing with their
classmates.
Working with pre-kids is, indeed, a rewarding
experience and I am really keen on giving them my very
best!

I must confess I was reluctant to work on posters for some time.
I believed it was wasting valuable time, but I was wrong. Posters
can be both inspirational and motivational. They make students
practise, produce and use the target language. Moreover, they
become more aware of collocations, and at the same time exploit
their creativity and develop their teamwork while learning by
doing.
In the end, they look around and notice they have changed their
classroom into a cosier and more inviting place: the room where
learning takes place.

having a Basic 1
class

Many are the reasons students have mentioned for enrolling in the CPE
course. Some are interested in improving their level of English and achieving
the highest level in the suite of Cambridge examinations. Others are keeping
a promise they made to themselves by taking the next step to fulfil their
expectations for their future.

I remember when I
started working at
the BRITÁNICO. I
used to have Basic 1
classes every month.
It was good because
first I knew what
to do, then it was
exciting seeing new
students nervous at their first experience with
a foreign language class. I always remember
myself when I was student. After some time,
I realised that it is the most difficult course to
teach since we are the first contact with this
amazing language and our students’ first
impression is definitely valuable.
Whatever their motivation is, studying the CPE course is definitely a
challenge. Although it implies hard work, dedication and long hours of
study, it’s an extraordinary experience. Together as a team, we continue day
by day discovering the beauty of the English language.
As a teacher, sharing this experience and learning process with my students
fulfils me as a professional and makes me feel proud of their accomplishments
and commitment in the acquisition and development of the different skills
and techniques required. Moreover, being part of this unique group enables
us all to continue growing as individuals.
So depending on our creativity, kindness and
enthusiasm, students can be involved and
fascinated with English or not... That’s why I
consider that HAVING A BASIC 1 CLASS IS AS
CHALLENGING AS IT IS REWARDING.

El pertenecer al staff del BRITÁNICO de Miraflores es desde
todos los puntos de vista una experiencia enriquecedora
porque nos permite aprender y conocer cada día un poco
más tanto a las personas de nuestro entorno laboral como
a los alumnos que frecuentemente solicitan nuestra asesoría,
a los que ya conocemos por su frecuencia académica, y a los
que ingresan a recepción entusiasmados con la idea de dar
el primer paso en el aprendizaje del idioma inglés. Aquí los
esperamos día a día para atenderlos con el compromiso de
siempre.
Es un placer para nosotras poder atender a cada uno de los
visitantes del SAC diariamente, que vienen en busca de las
herramientas necesarias para reforzar lo aprendido en clase y
perfeccionar el idioma.
De esta manera, la labor de orientar se vuelve una experiencia
gratificante porque nos da la oportunidad de interactuar
con alumnos que vemos desarrollarse en el idioma desde sus
inicios; y el ser partícipes de su desarrollo en el aprendizaje
y el logro de sus metas nos enorgullece e incentiva a seguir
mejorando cada día.
