THE OCTOBER 2013 Reaffirming Our Commitment to Reliability Flipping the light switch and having the lights come on are a daily expectation. At UI, we realize our customers expect a high level of reliability and we work every day to ensure that happens. In fact, UI historically has had one of the highest records of service reliability in the country. However, no one can dispute the number of unusual weather events that we have had in recent years. With Tropical Storm Irene, Hurricane Sandy and various wind storms and Nor’easters, Connecticut has seen its share of unpredictable weather. But even with these unusual trends, there has been one thing that has remained constant: Trees, trees, and more trees. Trees are a staple in New England. They add character and beauty, assist some property values and are great for the environment. Trees near electric power lines are problematic and have been to blame for practically all of the major outages in UI’s service territory. In fact, during Irene and Sandy, trees accounted for approximately 90 percent of all electric service interruptions. Often times, we found trees that were completely toppled by strong winds were actually hollow and diseased inside. Local experts have verified this fact. To the naked eye, these trees appeared normal but were actually rotting inside. So, to address this challenge while maintaining our love and respect for trees, UI will soon be embarking on a plan to review what can be done. Our goal will include implementing a strategy that raises customer reliability while also protecting the environment. We recently sent all of our customers an informative brochure about where to properly plant trees and which ones are great to use when considering nearby electric lines. See UINET.com for the brochure or scan here to see a short informational video. Under the new PURA-approved rate plan, UI’s distribution rates for residential customers will change as follows: • A typical residential Rate R customer using 700 kilowatt-hours a month will see a total rate increase of 3.6 percent, or about $5.27 a month. • A typical residential customer on UI’s time-of-day Rate RT, using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, will see an overall increase of 2.2 percent, or about $4.41 a month. (The actual adjustment depends on the customer’s usage patterns.) For more information about the rate decision visit PURA’s website, ct.gov/pura/site/default.asp.
