Synopsis
Kltr@ is an emotive journey in search of alternate kinship approaches between
people and street dogs. Through a series of interviews with artists, cultural institutions,
and their companion species, as well as primary footage of dogs who live beyond the
borders of domestic life in Santiago de Chile, we explore the co-evolutionary
relationships between kiltr@s and “humans”, looking for clues about how they help
each other to survive.
Etymologically, the term “quiltro” comes from Mapundungun (Mapuche indigenous
language) and was once used to classify a mixed breed of small furry dogs. In its
everyday use Kiltro is a term that codifies species and racial hybridity and that
translates as mutt, mongrel, or mixed breed. Kiltro is also the most common term used
to classify the roughly half a million “homeless” or street dogs found across Chile.
Kiltro is often used as a slur with a derogatory undertone, to devalue dogs without
pedigree, or when used to refer to people who are of mixed race or who have
indigenous ancestry. In this project we hope to resuscitate Kiltr@ as a decolonization
term, that resists against colonial and modern notions of purity across nature, culture,
race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality, and that reminds us of our co-constituted
and co-evolutionary subjectivities.
For the past decade, feminists, anarchists, and artists have been primary agents in
rescuing kiltr@s and resisting against the militarized extermination policies that
threaten their survival; here we follow a few of them: Carmen Berenguer, a feminist
poet, theorist, and audiovisual artist, helps us to investigate the social and cultural
construction of the kiltr@ in Chilean society as she introduces us to Obama, a street
dog she adopted from Plaza Italia. In San Miguel, Marissa Nino, an animal activist and
photographer, shares intimate portraits about the lifestyles of animals and people who
traverse Santiago’s underground. In the municipality of La Pintana we follow the story
of Estrella, a kiltra that became the first mascot for Pintacanes, a cultural and arts
festival where residents use fiberglass clones of kiltr@s to reflect upon and re-imagine
their own identities. From La Pintana we turn to Santiago Centro, where María, a semi
domestic kiltra teaches “painter of light,” Cristián Galaz about freedom and the feminist
politics of reproduction.

Kltr@ es un viaje emotivo en busca de formaciones y relacionalidades de afecto
alternativas entre las personas y los perros de la calle. A través de una serie de
entrevistas con artistas, instituciones culturales, y sus especies acompañantes, así
como material de archivo principal de los perros que viven más allá de las fronteras de
la vida doméstica en Santiago de Chile, se exploran las relaciones de co-evolución
entre kiltr@ s y "los seres humanos ", en busca de pistas acerca de cómo se ayudan
unos a otros para sobrevivir.
Etimológicamente, el término "quiltro" viene de mapundungún (lengua mapuche) y se
usó para clasificar una mezcla de raza de pequeños perros peludos. En su uso diario
Kiltro es un término que codifica las especies y la hibridez racial y que se traduce
como raza mixta. Kiltro es también el término más comúnmente utilizado para
clasificar a los cerca de medio millón de perros "sin techo" o callejeros que se
encuentran en todo Chile. Kiltro se utiliza a menudo como insulto con un tono
despectivo, para devaluar los perros sin pedigree, o cuando se utiliza para referirse a
las personas que son de raza mixta o que tienen ascendencia indígena. En este
proyecto esperamos resucitar Kiltr @ como un término de la descolonización, que se
resiste contra las nociones coloniales y modernos de la pureza a través de la
naturaleza, cultura, raza, etnia, clase, género y sexualidad, y que nos recuerda de
nuestras sujetividades co-constituidas.
Durante la última década muchas feministas, anarquistas, y artistas han sido agentes
principales en el rescate de kiltr @ s y de oponerse a las políticas de exterminio
militarizadas que amenazan su supervivencia, y aquí seguimos a algunos de ellos:
Carmen Berenguer, poeta feminista, teórica, y artista audiovisual, nos ayuda a
investigar la construcción social y cultural de kiltr@s en la sociedad chilena mientras
ella nos presenta a Obama, un perro callejero que adoptó desde Plaza Italia. En San
Miguel, Marissa Niño, una activista animalista y fotógrafa, nos provee retratos íntimos
de los animales y las personas que atraviesan el underground de Santiago. En el
municipio de La Pintana sigue la historia de Estrella, un kiltra que se convirtió en la
primera mascota de Pintacanes, un festival cultural donde los residentes utilizan
clones de kiltr @ s hechos en fibra de vidrio para reflexionar y volver a imaginar su
propia identidad. Desde La Pintana nos dirigimos a Santiago Centro, donde María, una
kiltra semi-doméstica enseña "pintor de la luz", Cristián Galaz sobre la libertad y la
política feminista de reproducción.

Cheto Castellano is a visual artist and filmmaker that lives and works on the East
Coast. His current work explores how colonialities of power, nature, and gender
produce conditions of slavery and oppression for both human and non-human species.
Three recent collaborative projects, Kiltr@s (2012), Art Farm Revisited (2012), and
SEEDBANK (2012), apply transmedia methodologies to posthumanistic research and
develop multimodal platforms using visual anthropology, video installation and
architectural design. In 2013, he spent a year working towards the rehabilitation of
Indian or Pariah Dogs in Goa, India, which led to the encounter of his current canine
love and companion, Matsya. In 2014, his studies of dogs in ballpoint pen were
featured in Ecce Animalia at the Polish Sculpture Center. Today, he is working as a
wildlife rehabilitator of raccoons. He recently finished a documentary about Sin
Kabeza Production’s residency at dOCUMENTA(13), titled Affective Encounters on and
off the dOCUMENTA(13) Trail, and will soon release an OPEN TV feature on Carrie, the
dancing dog, who is recognized as the most talented doggie dancer in the world.
Lissette Olivares is an artist, activist, curator, and transmedia storyteller that is
committed to inter, trans, and post disciplinary approaches to knowledge production.
Her work as an artist-agent investigates the realm of human, animal and ecological
exploitation through diverse technologies including creative writing, performance,
intervention, experimental video and multimedia installation. Three recent collaborative
projects, Kiltr@ (2012), Revisiting Art Farm (2012), and SEEDBANK (2012), develop
transmedia methodologies for multispecies ethnography using visual anthrozoology,
video installation and architectural design. In 2013, she spent a year working towards
the rehabilitation of Indian, or Pariah Dogs in Goa, India, which led to the encounter of

Cheto Castellano es un artista visual y director de cine y video experimental. El vive y
trabaja en Estados Unidos. Su trabajo actual explora cómo colonialidades de poder,
naturaleza y género producen las condiciones de la esclavitud y opresión entre las
especies humanas y no humanas. Tres recientes proyectos desarollados en
colaboración son: Kiltr@ (2012), Volver a la Granja de Arte (2012), y Seedbank (2012),
que aplican metodologías transmedíaticas para la investigación posthumanista,
3 desarrollando plataformas multimodales con la antropología visual, instalación de
video y el diseño arquitectónico. En el 2013 pasó un año trabajando hacia la
rehabilitación de perros Pariah en Goa, India, lo que lo llevó a un encuentro con su
amor y compañera canina, Matsya. En 2014, sus estudios de perros en bic se
exhibieron como parte de Ecce Animalia en el Centro de Escultura de Polonia.

Lissette Olivares es artista, activista, curadora, y narradora transmediática que se ha
comprometido con enfoques interdisciplinarios para la producción de conocimiento.
Ella es una estudiante de doctorado en el Departamento de Historia del la Conciencia
en la Universidad de California en Santa Cruz, donde está terminando su tesis titulada
Repertorios literarios de Resistencia: Chiles década de los 80 y la Generación NN. Su
trabajo como artista-agente investiga el ámbito de la salud humana y animal en el
contexto de la explotación ecológica y política. Tres recientes proyectos desarollados
en colaboración y sobre temáticas de activismo y ecología son: Kiltr @ (2012),
Volviendo a Art Farm (2012), y Seedbank (2012), los cuales desarrollan metodologías
transmediáticas cómo la etnografía visual, instalación de video y el diseño
arquitectónico. En el 2013 pasó un año trabajando hacia la rehabilitación de perros
Pariah en Goa, India, lo que lo llevó a un encuentro con su amor y compañera canina,
