2004 DONORS REPORT Dear Friends, As chair of the Empire State College Foundation board, and on behalf of the entire college community, I am proud to present to you the 2004 Donors Report. This document is a clear demonstration of the support and dedication of the many Empire State College alumni, employees and friends who have joined together to help ensure that we remain a world leader in the education of motivated adults. Your support is inspiring to those of us working to serve our students, and we are extremely pleased to be able to recognize your generosity here. Monte I. Trammer I also am proud to announce that for the second time in the college’s history, contributions to the Empire State College Foundation exceeded $1 million. The $1.15 million contributed in 2004 represents an increase of more than 22 percent from the $944,108 contributed in 2003. It is important to note that many of the gifts that contributed to this tremendous total were given to the 2004 Empire State College Annual Fund. Each and every Annual Fund contribution directly supports the everyday excellence that the college provides its students by helping us continue to enhance our academic programs, provide scholarship support, enrich our faculty, and take advantage of the latest educational technology available. As is indicated by the donors listed here in bold, more and more of the college’s alumni and friends are making their support of the college an annual event. A special thank you to those of you who have chosen to make Empire State College a part of your annual philanthropic plans. Whatever your reason for giving to Empire State College – to give back to your alma mater, to recognize someone who has helped you advance your career, or to help guarantee the success of future students – you have demonstrated your belief in the importance of this institution. Trammer Chair, Empire State College Foundation Board of Directors 1 DONORS REPORT: JANUARY 1 - DECEMBER 31, 2004 Donors EMPIRE STATE COLLEGE 2004 Recognition Societies The Empire Society Recognizes those donors who contribute $5,000 or more in one fund year. $5,000+ The Hour Society This society provides a unique opportunity for individuals to make a contribution equivalent to the cost of operating the entire college – its centers, units and programs – for one hour. $2,500 - $4,999 The Scholar Society Donors in this category provide the funds which represent the tuition and fees for a half-time student at Empire State College. $1,156 - $2,499 The Kindred Society $527 - $1,155 Donors at this level are recognized for providing funds representative of the average cost of childcare during a term for those students juggling their career and family responsibilities while pursuing their degree. The Academic Society Donors in this society provide the funds which represent the average cost of books and supplies for a full-time student for one 16-week session. $371 - $526 The Distinguished Alumni Society Recognizes those donors who contribute $5 for each year since the college was founded in 1971. $165 - $370 The Mentor Society Established to recognize the unique and significant relationship between student and mentor, donors at this level provide the funds which represent the average cost for a student to meet with his/her mentor three times. $108 - $164 The Anniversary Society Established in 2001 to honor Empire State College’s 30th anniversary. Stanley ’79 *Deceased 3 DONORS REPORT: JANUARY 1 - DECEMBER 31, 2004 YOU ARE Empire State College U nder the volunteer leadership of Annual Fund Chairman John Corrou ’94, the last three years have been a time of growth for the Empire State College Annual Fund. During this time, we have seen 3,087 graduates make their first contribution to the college and watched the Annual Fund grow by more than 31 percent raising in excess of $377,000 in 2004. With John’s tenure having come to a close at the end of 2004, I would like to personally thank him for all that he has done, and continues to do to benefit Empire State College. Melba Tolliver ’98 chair of the 2005 Empire State College Annual Fund Looking ahead to 2005, it gives me great pleasure to announce that alumna and Empire State College Foundation board member Melba Tolliver ’98 has agreed to serve as chairperson for the 2005 Annual Fund. Melba brings a wealth of experience to the position, ranging from broadcast journalism to academia, and has already begun providing insight into what it means to be an Empire State College graduate. Like so many of you who have completed degree programs with us, Melba strongly believes that an education obtained at Empire State College is unique. Our students are a group of experienced, mature adults, working to achieve their educational goals. In order to accommodate these working adults, the college was designed to provide an education based on a student’s individual experiences. Whether it is a personal exchange with one’s mentor, the feedback received from a comment posted online, or the development of a learning portfolio, it is a student’s individual experience that is at the heart of an Empire State College education. Melba continually reminds us that this college is everywhere, from the state to the nation and abroad. Empire State College exists not only in our physical locations but also in the hearts and minds of our faculty, staff, students and graduates. Please remember that like the other individuals profiled in this issue, you are Empire State College, and we are proud to have you as a member of this community. Like many Empire State College students, Donnelly has a lot on her plate. Although she had enrolled in college right out of high school, and had taken courses over the years, she did not earn a degree. Lynn Donnelly Scholarship Enables Mother of Three to Help People Cope The flexibility of Empire State College’s program is enabling her to fulfill her dream. “Lynn in many ways is a reflection of the best possible match between Empire State College and an adult learner,” says Efrat Levy, Donnelly’s primary mentor. “Lynn has a real flair for understanding social and political issues that impact adolescents and I have suggested that she focus future work in this area. She also has been a diligent and responsible student while balancing her strong commitment to her children. Donnelly notes that standards for teaching assistants are to become more stringent in New York state, and she wants to be ahead of the curve. “In September, I’ll have my two-year degree (in community and human services), then I will continue and get my bachelors’ degree in something like counseling. Eventually, I’d like to work with teens having trouble with their lives, and also work at hospice, helping people through their grief. My longterm goal is to earn a master’s degree,” she explains. For now, she must juggle her job with being a wife to Michael, and mother to their children, ranging in age from Jason, 10, a fifth-grader, to Max, 14, a sophomore in high school, to 21-year-old Jeremy, a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, who just completed his second tour of duty in Iraq. As a recipient of the Adirondack Trust Scholarship, Donnelly is grateful for the opportunity to concentrate on her studies. “It takes away the whole money worry. It’s just nice having the ability to study and not worry about adding a loan.” While having her son away in Iraq may have been nerve-wracking, having the funds necessary to complete her degree helped a little toward giving her peace of mind. Merck Company Foundation The MONY Group MOOG Incorporated THE BOYER SOCIETY he Boyer Society was established by the Empire State College Foundation in 1994 to recognize individuals who have made provisions for the college through a bequest, a charitable gift annuity, a charitable trust, or by making the college the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan. T construct a degree program specifically to meet her educational needs and obtain her degree. Following her graduation, Kathryn served many years on the board of directors of the Empire State College Foundation, and she remains actively connected to the college through the Boyer Family Lecture Series which will be endowed with a planned gift. The Boyer Society was named in honor of Ernest L. and Kathryn G. Boyer, two individuals who helped shape the college during its formative years. Ernest L. Boyer was the chancellor of the State University of New York from 1970 to 1977. His social and educational vision led to the founding of Empire State College. Resisting the increasingly duplicative growth of universities, he saw a reform of undergraduate education that put the student at the center of the learning process. Far in advance of its time, Dr. Boyer envisioned university study available at times and places convenient to students of different ages and backgrounds. He saw the possibilities for awarding a degree for what a student knew, rather than for time spent in a classroom. Alumni and friends who inform the college of their intention to make a planned gift are welcomed as members of the Boyer Society. The easiest way to become a member of the Boyer Society is to make a provision for the Empire State College Foundation in your will and then notify the college in writing that such a provision has been made.
