Para el artista brasileño Ernesto Neto, que se autodefine
como escultor, sus obras han sido creadas para atravesarlas,
habitarlas, sentirlas e incluso olerlas, lo que permite al espectador experimentar su propio cuerpo, sus sentidos y su mente
por medio de la obra de arte y viceversa. Interactuando con el
entorno y con las demás personas, el visitante se ve inmerso en
una fusión de escultura y arquitectura.
For the Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto, who defines himself as a
sculptor, his works are created to be passed through, lived in,
felt and even smelt, which enables the spectator to experience
their own body, their senses and their mind by means of the
work of art and vice versa. Interacting with the surroundings
and with others, the visitor sees himself immersed in a fusion of
sculpture and architecture.
Neto afirma: «Lo que tenemos en común es más importante
que lo que nos hace diferentes. Me interesa discutir la situación
de la Humanidad, la temperatura de las cosas que vivimos. El
tránsito de las cosas. El lenguaje». Por eso indaga, a través de
esculturas que dan lugar a la sensualidad y corporalidad, en
aspectos comunes de las relaciones interpersonales.
Neto states: “What we have in common is more important than
what makes us different. I’m interested in discussing the situation of humanity, the temperature and the things we experience. The transition of things. The language”. That’s why he
investigates common aspects of interpersonal relations through
sculptures that give rise to sensuality and corporality.
Nacido en Río de Janeiro en 1964, Ernesto Neto ha expuesto
sus esculturas en los principales museos y centros de arte del
mundo. De hecho, algunas de sus obras forman parte de las
colecciones del Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), el Guggenheim
(Nueva York) o el MoMA (Nueva York). Además, ha representado
Brasil en las Bienales de Venecia y São Paulo.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1964, Ernesto Neto has exhibited his
sculptures in the major museums and art centres of the world.
In fact, some of his works form part of the collections of the
Reina Sofía Museum (Madrid), the Guggenheim (New York)
and the MoMA (New York). He also represented Brazil in the
Biennials of Venice and São Paulo.

On the road es una expresión recurrente que sólo pocas veces
refleja su autentico significado. Una figura clave en esta tradición, Francisco de Asís, es el punto de partida de la investigación
sobre el arte contemporáneo que se recoge en esta publicación.
Figura central de la cultura europea, desafió al mundo en que
le tocó vivir. Él representa, por un lado, la crítica radical a las
fuerzas dominantes de su tiempo y, por el otro, una respuesta
enérgica a las exigencias de la situación. Sus enfrentamientos
con la jerarquía de su tiempo hacen de él una referencia inevitable en muchos movimientos socioculturales posteriores.
Su persona ha estado vinculada al arte desde el siglo XIII, cuando
Giotto retrata la vida de Francisco en sus magníficos frescos de
la iglesia en Asís. Desde entonces, la figura del Poverello ha sido
un tema recurrente en la expresión artística, por su carácter
eminentemente creativo, su actitud innovadora en la búsqueda
de la armonía perdida.
La estructura del libro está intrínsecamente relacionada con
las ideas que sustentan la actitud de Francisco de Asís que aún
son de gran actualidad: la dignidad humana en la pobreza, la
revaluación del conocimiento sensible frente a la hegemonía de
la razón puramente instrumental, la preservación de la naturaleza - la entropía como medio para el conocimiento (apreciando
la condición nómada en un mundo que está anclado en el
sedentarismo), la condición del paisaje como parte de la condición humana (apreciar la realidad, como un vasto, complejo e
inestable bucle donde nada puede ser externo).
35 artistas contemporáneos enviaron sus obras para este

On the Road is a recurrent title (motto) that only few times
reflects the in-depth meaning of the expression. A key figure
in this tradition—Francis of Assisi—is the starting point of the
research on contemporary art we collects in this amazing
publication.
Central figure to European culture, he was a challenge to the
historical time and to the world in which it was his lot to live.
What he did represented, on the one hand, a radical criticism of
the dominant forces of his time and, on the other, an energetic
response to the demands of the situation. His confrontations
with the hierarchies of the age make him an inevitable reference
in many later socio-cultural movements.
His person has been linked to art since the 13th century, when
Giotto portrayed the life of Francis in his magnificent frescoes
for the church in Assisi. Ever since, the figure of il poverello
has been a recurrent theme in artistic expression, manifesting
his eminently creative, innovative attitude in the search for lost
harmony that lives on in the utopias of all ages.
The book structure is intrinsically related to ideas underpinning the attitude of Francis of Assisi that are still highly topical:
human dignity in poverty, the revaluation of sensible knowledge
as opposed to the hegemony of purely instrumental reason,
the preservation of nature - entropy, walking as a means to
knowledge (appreciating the nomadic condition in a world that is
anchored in the sedentary), the condition of the landscape as the
human condition (appreciation of reality, like a vast, complex and
unstable loop to which nothing can be external).
Of course, the list of contemporary artist (35) that sent its
works and writings is invaluable: from Francis Alÿs, Lothar
Baumgarten, Cardiff&Miller and Roni Horn to Annika Kars,
Amar Kanwar, Anthony McCall, and Lawrence Weiner.

Sigmar Polke nació en Alemania del Este en 1941 y estudió en la
Staatliche Kunstacademie Düsseldorf. Su primer reconocimiento
le llegó en 1963, con obras realizadas en un estilo ingenioso e
irreverente, que él denominó Realismo Capitalista, emparentado
con el angloamericano Pop Art, pero considerado a menudo más
complejo y político. En la actualidad continúa trabajando en obras
estéticamente sorprendentes e innovadoras. Ha sido objeto de

Starting from the profane material of everyday culture, Polke
interprets images of reality rather than reality itself, satirizes

Sigmar Polke was born is East Germany in 1941 and studied at
the State Academy of Art in Dusseldorf. He first achieved recognition in 1963 when he began working in a witty and irreverent
style he termed Capitalist Realism, often considered a more
complex and political cousin to Anglo-American Pop Art.
He has continued to create innovative and aesthetically
impressive works through the present day. He has been the
subject of solo exhibitions at such major institutions as
the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Museum
of Modern Art, San Francisco; the Musée d’Art Moderne de
la Ville de Paris; the Hirshorn Museum, Washington, D.C.;
the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Brooklyn
Museum of Art; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the
Walker Arts Center; and, in 1999, at the Museum of Modern
Art, New York. He has been the recipient of the Venice
Biennale’s Golden Lion, the Erasmus award, and the Carnegie

Juan Uslé (Santander) vive en Nueva York desde principios de los
90 y es una figura destacada en el campo de la pintura actual.
Living in New York from beginning 90’s, Juan Uslé (Santander,
Spain) is currently a world-leading figure in painting field.
La hipersensibilidad que Uslé describe en su obra es una
especie de estado visionario memorable porque es doloroso.
Cuando vemos ciertas pinturas de Uslé, siempre de colores
intensos, brillantes y ardientes, deberíamos pensar en este
encuentro con uno de esos estados del ser que nos sacan de
nuestro modo cotidiano de percibir, uno de esos eventos que
nos enseñan que todo lo que percibimos puede ser captado de
manera diferente por completo, dado que incluso una pequeña
modificación del aparato perceptual la puede hacer variar. Hay
ciertas pinturas de Uslé, las más complejas, que nos recuerdan
a la visión a través de un caleidoscopio. Es útil recordar que este
tipo de experiencias, a las que no estamos acostumbrados, no
son fáciles ni cómodas, y que sólo están a un paso, aunque un
paso crucial, de ser dolorosas. Al ser excesivas ejercen presión

The hypersensitivity Uslé describes is a kind of visionary state,
but it is one that is painful—and memorable precisely because
it is painful. When we see certain paintings of Usle’s that use
bright, intense, searing colors, shouldn’t we think of this early
encounter with one of those states of being that suddenly and
dramatically remove us from our everyday mode of perception—
one of those events that teach us that everything we perceive
might be perceived entirely differently, given even a small
modification of the perceptual apparatus we normally take for
granted? There are certain paintings by Usle, very complicated
ones, that might well remind us of the experience of peering
into a kaleidoscope, and while this is not to say that we are
therefore to imagine that we should also find the sight of these
paintings painful—far from it! no more than, not having suffered
sunstroke, we would find looking through a kaleidoscope
painful—it is helpful to be reminded that such experiences,
in which there is a visual clamor beyond what we are used to
being subject to, may not be easy or comfortable ones, and
therefore they are only a step away, albeit a crucial step, from
being painful. They are a little too much, and therefore they put
pressure on our aesthetic expectations. This is Usle’s pictorial
equivalent of Rimbaud’s famous “dérèglement de tous les sens.”

Ocho personas en situación de paro, que cubren el espectro
social más amplio posible, son fotografiadas por Francesc
Torres durante un tiempo de convivencia de entre una y dos
semanas. Durante este periodo, el artista documenta su vida
diaria: algunos reciclan entre las chatarras, otros se dedican a
enviar currículums profesionales, otros no están haciendo nada,
aparentemente, como si ya fuera un estado asumido de su vida,
otros buscan un cambio de vida profesional, otros ayudan a los
que todavía sufren más; todos sobreviviendo, solos o en familia.
Además de la documentación visual de su día a día, cada uno de
ellos es fotografiado en un retrato formal.
Después de esta primera muestra visual de su situación vital y
económica, la cineasta Mercedes Álvarez filma las opiniones de
cada uno de ellos sobre el arte que les gusta, y si juega algún
papel, importante o no, en su vida. Se les pide que presten
un objeto de contenido emocional que tengan en casa (una
pintura, una figura, una reproducción, etc.). Finalmente visitan
individualmente el Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona
(MACBA) y allí escogen una obra de la colección permanente
entre todas aquellas que están en condiciones de viajar, explicando porqué les ha interesado. Esta incursión en el museo
es filmada por la cineasta y pasa a formar parte (como las
imágenes anteriores y los objetos personales) de la instalación
final. Las piezas de la colección del MACBA seleccionadas son
también prestadas para completar la presentación del proyecto
en la Bienal de Venecia.
Además, los ocho parados, como sujetos activos de la obra
final, reciben una remuneración económica por su participación y dedicación.

Eight people out of work covering the widest possible social
spectrum were photographed by Francesc Torres as he lived
alongside them for one to two weeks. During this period, the
artist documented their daily lives: some recycle scrap, others
send out résumés, others are apparently not doing anything,
as if this were now a given state for their lives, others seek a
change in their professional life, others are helping those even
less fortunate than them. All of them are surviving, alone or with
their families. In addition to the visual documentation of their
day-to-day experience, each of them has had a formal portrait
taken. The artist never juggles two stories in parallel: he only
began to document a participant once work with the one before
had been completed.
After this first visual presentation of their lives and economic
situation, filmmaker Mercedes Álvarez filmed each of them
giving their opinions on the art they liked and whether it played a
part, important or not, in their lives. They were asked to provide
an object from home (a painting, a figure, a reproduction, etc.)
with emotional significance for them. Finally, they each visited
the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) alone and
there chose a work from the permanent collection from among
those fit to be transported and explained why it interested them.
This foray into the museum was filmed by the director and
went on to form part of the installation with the above images
and personal belongings. The pieces selected from the MACBA
collection for this process have also been borrowed to complete
the project presentation at the Venice Biennale.
As active subjects of the final work, the eight unemployed men
and women received remuneration for their participation and
dedication.

Charlotte Perriand nació en París en 1903. En 1927, con apenas
veinticuatro años, expuso en el Salon d’Automne su «Bar en el
ático» hecho de acero y aluminio, que llevó a Le Corbusier a
contratarla como diseñadora.
Charlotte Perriand was born in Paris in 1903. In 1927, when she
was only 24 years old, she showed a “Bar under the roof” made
out of steel and aluminum at the Salon d’Automne, prompting Le
Corbusier to hire her as a furniture designer.
Dos años más tarde, algunos de los prototipos para la siguiente
edición del Salon d’Automne —«Equipement intérieur de
l’habitation»— cuyo diseño firmaron Le Corbusier, Pierre
Jeanneret y Charlotte Perriand, provocaron una reacción en
cadena que todavía no se ha agotado.
Some of the prototypes she produced for the Salon d’Automne
held two years later—“Equipement intérieur de l’habitation”—a
project signed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte
Perriand, provoked a chain reaction that has not yet come to
an end.
En 1940, Perriand fue invitada a Japón para ocupar el cargo de
asesora oficial del Ministerio de Industria y Comercio. Perriand
aconsejó a los japoneses concentrar sus esfuerzos en la
creación de productos que se pudieran exportar en Occidente.
Desafortunadamente, su estancia fue interrumpida por el
comienzo de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Al no poder volver a
su país a causa del bloqueo naval, pasó cuatro años, hasta el
final de la guerra, en Vietnam. Fue aquí donde se familiarizó
con la producción de tejidos, madera, ratán y otros materiales
naturales.
In 1940, Perriand was invited to Japan to be the official advisor
on industrial design for the Ministry of Trade and Industry. She
recommended that the Japanese turn their efforts to creating
products for export to the West. Unfortunately, her stay was
cut short by the outbreak of World War II. Unable to travel back
home due to the naval blockades, she stayed in Vietnam for four
years until the war ended. There she learned about weaving,
woodwork, rattan, and other natural products.

After this experience, she turned to the radical idea of using
more rustic materials such as bamboo and cane to create more
affordable, mass-produced furniture.

Swimming Horses es un libro que nace del deseo de hacer una
revisión de los elementos que han acompañado las creaciones de Mal Pelo a lo largo de los últimos doce años. En él se
presentan, por un lado, fotografías de Jordi Bover que, además
de la fuerza visual y la profundidad que contienen, permiten
observar diversos aspectos del trabajo: el movimiento, el uso
de los objetos, la iluminación, la gestualidad y la presencia, las
tensiones del espacio y algunos códigos y herramientas propias.
Swimming Horses is a book that emerged from the desire to
review the elements that have accompanied the creations of Mal
Pelo throughout the past twelve years. On one side it presents
the photographs of Jordi Bover, which as well as the visual force
and depth they contain, enable different aspects of the work to
be observed: The movement, the use of objects, the lighting, the
gestures and presence, the tensions of the space and some of
his own codes and tools.
Por otro lado, se incorporan voces de personas que han seguido
la evolución del grupo, su mirada precisa sobre la manera en
que Mal Pelo habita la escena o construye una dramaturgia

On the other side, the voices of the people who have followed
the evolution of the group, their precise view on the way in

Mal Pelo es un grupo fundado por Pep Ramis y María Muñoz
en 1989 dedicado a la creación y exhibición de espectáculos.
Su trabajo artístico, basado en una búsqueda constante de
lenguajes, combina el movimiento, el vídeo, el texto y la música
original. Igualmente importantes son sus propuestas expositivas
así como sus vídeo-creaciones y publicaciones.
Mal Pelo is a group founded by Pep Ramis and María Muñoz in
1989, dedicated to the creation and exhibition of performances.
Their artistic work, based on the constant search for languages,
combines movement, video, text and original music. Their
exhibition proposals as well as their video creations and publications are equally important.

Determining the authorship and originality of artistic works is
a key element essential for fully enjoying the art and for the
correct functioning of the market and many cultural centres. It is
one of the tasks falling upon institutions and different categories
of people from artists’ foundations to museums, public administrations, academics, gallery owners and art collectors…
All those concerned by it encounter many problems when
conducting the task. This book, derived from an international
seminar organised by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation diffuses the knowledge, experience and opinions of some of the most

“Arte, Mercado y Derecho”, driven by the Gala-Salvador Dalí

of promoting legal, financial and artistic knowledge that
contribute in a general manner to the protection, conservation,
diffusion and fame of artistic heritage, specifically the heritage
created by Salvador Dalí.
Lluís Peñuelas has been the general secretary of the
Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation from 1990 to date. He is responsible for managing the Foundation’s four museums and their

de plantearse en términos fronterizos y de margen, en el sentido
de que su acción, inquisidora y poética al mismo tiempo, tantea
continuamente los límites configurativos que tienden a demarcarla en todo momento. Hay que constatar que en los trabajos de
Broodthaers el nexo ha sido el lenguaje y la escritura. «Escribir»,
nos dice, «es organizar una relación», pero su escritura incluye de
modo declarado la apertura de un espacio fundamentado en las
estructuras del lenguaje.
Esta completa reunión de sus escritos, enteramente ilustrada, nos
presenta su poesía temprana y una selección exhaustiva de sus
artículos y ensayos críticos, algunos inéditos y otros originariamente publicados en periódicos y en revistas, y recopilados aquí por

The trajectory of Marcel Broodthaers (Brussels, 1924-1976) is
to be seen in terms of borders and fringes, in the sense that his
approach, at once inquiring and poetic, continually feels its way
around the configurative limits that demarcate it at all times. In
the work of Broodthaers, the nexus is, definitively, language and
writing. “To write”, he said, “is to organize a relationship”, but his
writing sets out to include the creation of a space based on the
structures of language.
This complete collection of his writings, fully illustrated, presents
his early poetry and a comprehensive selection of his articles and
critical essays, some previously unpublished, others originally
printed in newspapers and journals, and compiled here for the first
time. All this, together with his open letters, interviews, preparatory notes and scripts, draws us into his well-founded opinions on
politics, economy, nationalism, advertising, institutions and culture.
Alison Smithson (1928-1993) y Peter Smithson (1923-2003), dos
de los más influyentes y polémicos arquitectos de la segunda
mitad del siglo XX, trataron de adaptar las ideas progresistas del
movimiento moderno de antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial a
las necesidades específicas del ser humano durante el periodo
de reconstrucción de la posguerra. Como jóvenes integrantes

the New Brutalism and the Pop Art movement of the 1960s.

published essays about the career of this partnership of British

Neglected for most of her career, Eileen Gray (1878-1976) is
now regarded as one of the most important furniture designers
and architects of the early twentieth century and the most
influential woman in those fields. Her work inspired both
modernism and Art Deco.
Eileen Gray was to “stand alone” throughout her career, first as a
lacquer artist, then a furniture designer, and finally as an architect.
At a time when other leading designers were almost all male and
mostly members of one movement or another—whether a loose
grouping like De Stijl in the Netherlands, or a formal one such as
the Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne—she remained
staunchly independent.
Nacido en Finlandia, Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) emigró a

de edad. Creció en Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, donde cursó

Born in Finland, Eero Saarinen (1910-1961) emigrated at the
age of thirteen to the United States of America in 1923. He grew
up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he took courses in
sculpture and furniture design, established a close relationship
with fellow students Charles and Ray Eames, and also became
good friends with Florence Knoll (then Schust).
Criticized in his own time for having no identifiable style,
Saarinen developed a remarkable range of work, which
depended on colour, form and materials. Saarinen showed a
marked dependence on innovative structures and sculptural
forms, but not at the cost of pragmatic considerations. He
moved back and forth freely between the International Style and
Expressionism, utilizing a vocabulary of curves and cantilevered
forms, some of which have remained in production and became
twentieth-century furniture icons.
Her design style was as distinctive as her way of working, and Gray
developed an opulent, luxuriant take on the geometric forms and
industrially produced materials used by the International Style
designers, such as Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Mies Van
Der Rohe, who shared many of her ideals.

A partir de esta serie de imágenes, Joan Fontcuberta presenta
Deletrix, un proyecto artístico (una exposición y un libro de artista)
sobre la censura con la implicación directa del PEN Catalán.
Joan Fontcuberta ha recibido el Premio Hasselblad (2013),
considerado el Nobel de fotografía, en reconocimiento a toda
su trayectoria. Previamente, su obra había sido distinguida con
otros galardones, como el Premio Nacional de Fotografía (1998)
y el Premio Nacional de Ensayo (2011).
During the last six years, the photographer Joan Fontcuberta
(Barcelona, 1955) has visited libraries and archives throughout
Europe and North America and gathered together images of
censured text from different epochs and authors: Desiderius
Erasmus, Fernando de Rojas, Francisco de Quevedo, among others.
Based on this series of images, Joan Fontcuberta presents
Deletrix, an artistic project (an exhibition and an artist book) on
censorship with the direct involvement of Catalan PEN.
Joan Fontcuberta was awarded the Hasselblad Prize (2013),
considered as the Nobel in photography, in recognition of his
entire career. His work has previously been recognised by other
awards, such as the National Photography Award (1998) and the
National Essay Award (2011).

On Building is an action that moves towards the future. It
involves imagining another reality, another world, different to

Despite the fact that the worlds of Art and Law have traditionally
been presented to us as being distanced from one another, it
is true that today, artistic creation, diffusion, conservation and
commercialisation is conditioned by the legal system conditions
more than ever.
The known aversion and disinterest of artists and other operators within the art market for law in our times, clashes with an
overwhelming reality: Legal regulations in Western countries
have grown so much, as a consequence of what the professor

narration to an element removed from the spirit of dance,
A contracuento attempts to rehabilitate the story, presents
the whys and the wherefores of an infinite history of intersections, convergences and complications between the malice’s of
narration and the malice’s of dance. It does so by identifying the
evidence of a dance secretly inscribed in the unexpected events
of the story (from its original form, the myth, to its latest derivations, in the post-modern novel) and it does so through dialogue
with different protocols of thinking and doing, from figurative art
to 20th Century philosophy, from physics to biology.
Roberto Fratini holds a PhD in Performing Arts from the
Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona and teaches the Theory of
Dance in the Conservatori Superior de Dansa of Barcelona. He is
a dramatist and essayist.

The 20_21 Collection focuses on the creative and
intellectual approach of key contemporary artists and
consists of a series of monographs that examine the
interdisciplinary nature of the definition of art and its
limits. The collection also provides a forum for the critical
consideration of contemporary art practice as a whole.
Based on rigorous research, these essays on the
œuvre of an individual artist also look at the context
surrounding the work.
Gloria Moure, the editor of the collection, also pays
special attention to material from the artists’ archives,
their writings and their creative process.

Since its founding Ediciones Polígrafa has intensively
developed the publishing of complete works and
catalogues raisonnés. The close link of the publisher
to Joan Miró was decisive from the beginning (Miró
Lithographs, Miró Engravings…) and determined its
future collaboration on projects related to Adrien
Maeght and Daniel Lelong.
The collaboration with the Fundació Tàpies also allowed
the publication of the artist’s complete works in 8
volumes—the forthcoming ninth volume will cover the
last years of the great artist.
In the case of Julio González, Ediciones Polígrafa is
preparing the fourth volume—a total of seven are
planned—in close collaboration with Tomàs Llorens,
former director of the IVAM, the Reina Sofi a Museum
and the Thyssen Museum Madrid.

Artists’ books were an important element of many
of the movements of the Avant-garde and featured
strongly in the work of some of its leading figures, such
as Marcel Duchamp’s suitcases, Max Ernst’s collagenovels and Marinetti’s experiments in typography.
However, it was not until the late 1960s that the artist’s
book was recognized as a distinctive genre. It was then
that Ediciones Polígrafa began to issue its Bibliophile
editions, starting with a work by a close collaborator
