Easter Season: A Time for Mystagogia (I)
(A Deeper Appreciation of the Mass)
Understanding the Mysteries of Faith -Mysterium Fidei
The Easter season is revered as a sublime time for mystagogia, a deeper
appreciation and examination of the mysteries that define our faith as followers of
Jesus. The Church is invited in the spirit of the Resurrection of Jesus, to accompany
those who have received the three Easter Sacraments: Baptism, the Eucharist, and
confirmation at the Easter vigil so as to engage their faith, appreciate the new life in
Christ and grow in Christian conviction and spirituality. In Luke’s Gospel chapter 24:
13-35, Jesus accompanied the two disciples who embarked on a journey to Emmaus
and he explained the scriptures to them and they recognized him at the breaking of
bread.
Let us therefore consider how the Eucharist was
celebrated in the early times following the witness of St.
Justin Martyr as a bold step in our deeper appreciation of
the sacrament of the body and blood of Christ who is the
bread of life that come down from heaven (John 6: 3235).
The Testimony of St. Justin, Martyr
St. Justin began his apologetics on the Eucharist by
underlying the conditions necessary for the reception of
the Sacred Species. Those who share in the Eucharistic
meal are those who believe in the truth of the Church’s teachings (Faith) and have
been washed in the bath (Baptism), which confers forgiveness of sin and rebirth
(Reconciliation). These spiritual conditions are necessary because the Eucharist is not
ordinary bread and the blood of Christ is not an ordinary drink. Just as Jesus Christ
our Saviour became flesh through the word of God, and assumed flesh and blood for
our salvation, so too we are taught that the food over which the prayer of thanksgiving,
the word received from Christ, has been said, the food which nourishes our flesh and
blood by assimilation, is the flesh and blood of this Jesus who became flesh.
On Sundays there is an assembly of all who live in towns or in the country, and
the memoirs of the apostles (Gospels-New Testament) or the writings of the prophets
(Old Testament) are read for as long as time allows. After the readings, the president
(Celebrant) delivers an address in which he admonishes and encourages the faithful to
imitate in their lives the beautiful lessons they have heard read (Homily). After the
homily, the assembly stood up together to pray. When the universal prayer is over,
bread and wine and water are brought up (Offertory); the president offers prayers and
thanksgiving as best he can, and the people say ‘Amen’ as an expression of their
agreement. Then follows the distribution of the food over which the prayer of
thanksgiving has been recited (Holy Communion); all present receive some of it, and
the deacons carry some to those who were absent (Viaticum to the sick). Those who
are well provided for, if they wish to do so, contribute what each thinks fit; this is
collected and left with the president, so that he can help the orphans and the widows
and the sick, and all who are in need for any other reason, such as prisoners and
visitors from abroad (immigrants).
Living the Eucharistic Celebration
These beautiful lessons about the celebration of the Eucharist in the earliest times
of the Church’s life as St. Justin noted above are quite informative and constitute
spiritual resources that can effect more lively celebration of the Eucharist in our parish
family today. There is need to prepare for the celebration of Mass. Here, in our Sacred
Heart Community, the invitation to take this injunction to heart is obvious as we
contemplate the setting for our Sunday Liturgy. We are reminded of the sacredness of
the Church (Temple) which makes it imperative for us to state that: no one is
permitted to eat, drink, or use cell phone, I-pad, or any electronic devices during mass.
We need to shun all distractions during Sunday Mass and other spiritual exercises. Our
young and lovely parents with little kids/angels may gracefully go to the hospitality
area or to the Chapel to follow the Mass through the TV Screen when our little angels
become disquieting. Let us be reverent when we come to the House of God.
Thanks so much my dear brothers and sisters! May we continue to serve and
worship our God with joy as we gather for MASS.
Fr Ben
Wishing you the best of the Easter Season!!!

no guardan silencio.

confidencial. Para mas información, por favor contacte a
Blanca Leal-McGuthrie al 909-520-3867.
