The goal of the Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center is to help people of all
ages get and stay healthier through a strong primary care program with services such as annual check-ups, sports and school physicals, lab services, asthma care,
diabetes screening, diagnosis and management, wellness programs, patient education
and immunizations. With better access to preventive care, education and management
of chronic conditions, people in these communities can improve their health and quality of life.

Health Clinic (RHC)—a program designed

Recognizing Taylor Farms for $1 million gift
We are so very grateful to Taylor Farms for their $1 million gift to the capital campaign for the Family Health & Wellness Center in Gonzales. In honor of their
generosity, the Center will be named Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness Center.
“We are excited to be involved in a project that helps provide outstanding healthcare to our
families, our employees and our community,” says Bruce Taylor, Chairman and CEO of Taylor
Farms. “We appreciate being able to collaborate with Salinas Valley Memorial to ensure that
quality healthcare is accessible and affordable for more people in this area.”

fresh foods nationwide. The company recently expanded operations in
Gonzales.

More than a quarter-century ago, Mike Haynes’
father Stanley began what is now a family tradition
of giving to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation. Their history of generosity to the
community stretches back even further. Today,
Mike, brother Mark Haynes, sister Michele Herforth
and daughter Shara Yoshimura comprise the board
of the Haynes Charitable Foundation, established
by Stanley Haynes in the 1990s.
“Literally on his last day of life in 2010, my
father made us promise to contribute to
the community he loved so much,” says
Mike. “And it’s an honor to be able to do
so.” You could say that Mike’s connection
with Salinas Valley Memorial started at
birth. He was born at the hospital and so
were his siblings and two children. Over

Improving quality of life for patients—
Palliative Care at
Salinas Valley Memorial
The Palliative Care program at Salinas Valley Memorial
Hospital is available to any patient facing a serious or
life-threatening condition. It’s an effective complement to
traditional treatments helping patients manage pain and
symptoms, reduce stress and access healthcare, social
and community resources.
“The program addresses patients’ medical, physiological, mental
and spiritual health as well as issues around family, job, finances,
fears and life experiences,” says
Matt Katics, DO, Director of Palliative Medicine at SVMH. “Spiritual care is an important part
of palliative medicine. It helps patients and families get in touch
with what’s most important to them and can be a great source of comfort and inspiration.”
Since the palliative care program
launched in 2009, spiritual care
has been provided by dedicated
volunteers from local faith communities. Donations from
donors like the Haynes Charitable

Foundation ($40,000) and the SVMH Service League ($25,000), are making the dream of a full-time chaplain a reality. In addition to
caring for patients and overseeing the program, the chaplain will
coordinate the amazing spiritual care volunteers who already serve
patients.

been children. Every day, young patients on
our pediatrics unit enjoy the toys, playroom,
and colorful rooms and hallways funded
by their contributions. They also donated
and installed the flooring. Part of a recent
$300,000 multi-year pledge means that kids
will have their own themed exam room at the Taylor Farms Family Health & Wellness
Center in Gonzales, set to open this August.
This generous contribution will also support
a service near and dear to the Haynes’ family—the Palliative Care program at Salinas
Valley Memorial. “I didn’t know such a thing
existed until my mother was in her final days
of life,” recalls Mike. It was two years ago
that Dr. Matthew Katics, who oversees Hospice and Palliative Medicine at SVMH, cared
for Diane Haynes in her final days. “Dr. Katics
helped us take her home from the hospital
and kept her comfortable,” says Mike. “It’s
an amazing resource and we are happy to
support it so that other families can have the
same opportunity for their loved one.” (See

As a kid, Mike couldn’t wait to join in another
of his father’s passions—Cinderella Carpet
One—opened as a family business in 1947.
“I loved working with my dad in the family
business,” says Mike. By 1975, Mike was
working in the warehouse. “I could drive a
forklift before I could drive a car,” he recalls
with a laugh. Five years later he moved to
the sales floor and today is president of the
thriving company. “My dad often said how
important it was for us to give back in thanks
for the community’s support of our business.
He was right.”

Making miracles happen, $1 at a time
Last year was an amazing one for our local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals
Program (CMNH) at Salinas Valley Memorial. More than $660,000 was raised
locally through ongoing support from corporate partners, individual donors, Radio-thons, coin canisters and special events. It’s because of partners like you
that we are able to make a difference in the lives of local kids, every day.
As the Children’s Miracle Network
Hospital for Monterey, Santa Cruz and
San Benito counties, SVMH has the
unique privilege of making a difference
within our hospital and for individual
children in need throughout the tri-county
area. On top of funding newborn and pediatric equipment and services at
SVMH, CMNH funds also provide medical
needs grants to local children for items
such as electronic muscle stimulators, cochlear implants, mobility devices, ceiling track lift systems, communication
devices, custom orthotics and more.
Every dollar raised through CMNH stays local, and each year thousands of children are impacted by the results of your support.
As we continue on our 2015 fundraising

serve. Thank you for your hard work,
dedication, enthusiasm, and for being
willing to “Put Your Money Where the
Miracles Are” so that our local kids can
lead healthier, happier lives. We simply
could not do this without you.
Twenty-four hours after Caden’s
uneventful delivery, his standard
heart screening came back
abnormal. He was immediately
admitted to the SVMH Level III
NICU. More tests confirmed a
serious congenital heart disease
and he was transferred to the
Bay Area for heart surgery. Today,
Caden is happy and healthy
and recently celebrated his first
birthday, thanks in part to NICU
equipment including the giraffe
bed, state-of-the-art monitoring
system and tele-echocardiogram—all supported through
donations made to our Children’s
Miracle Network Hospital.

A FAMILY AFFAIR
The Whitney family has a long history of farming and
ranching in Salinas Valley, and of supporting the SVMH
Foundation. William and Barbara lived and raised three
children—daughter Laurie and sons Bill and Robert—on
Powderhorn Ranch in Greenfield. Their son Bill served
on our “Los Paseos De Los Rancheros” Men’s Trail Ride
committee. The family has also donated the use of their
Reliz Canyon and Powderhorn Ranches to host both
Men’s and Ladies’ Trail Rides in the past.
William R. Whitney Family Waiting Room
The idea of creating a family waiting room was inspired
when family patriarch William R. Whitney was a patient
at SVMH. After spending a great deal of time there, they
realized the need for a place for families who want to be
near a critically ill patient around the clock. “It’s important
for people to have a place to gather their thoughts and
relax a little bit,” says Barbara.
“When my husband William
passed away in 2000, our family decided to put our grief to work in helping other
people,” says Barbara Whitney.
And they did. One example
is the recently relocated and
expanded William R. Whitney

President’s Message
A touching highlight of the spacious, comfortable room is a set of beautiful etched windows designed by Barbara
and William’s daughter in law, and artist, Karen Whitney.
The dramatic panels depict a scene from their Reliz Canyon Ranch. At a dedication ceremony in April, Barbara
was given an elegant curved glass sculpture that features
a replica of the windows.
Over seventy years ago, it began with a vision; a
community recognizing a need and the commitment
to make it a reality. At the grand opening, the pioneers of what would become Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System unveiled a plaque dedicating the hospital “to the health of the community.” This became the cornerstone of care
in 1953 and continues to this day. Throughout the
years, the hospital’s Foundation has been vital in
helping to provide advanced equipment and services
for patients and their families.
Barbara and her family are very thankful for the generous
contributions that continue to come in. “It was the generosity of good hearted people that made this happen,” she
says. She was inspired to start another family tradition.
“When someone I know passes away, I make a donation
toward the waiting room. That’s a lovely way to honor a life.”
Thanks to your generous donations, the SVMH
Foundation continues the legacy of supporting
excellence in healthcare for our community. Health
and wellness, children’s services, palliative care and
a family waiting area—highlighted in this issue—are
just some of the programs you help make possible.

Are.” Lopez, an actress, singer, American Idol judge and mother of twins, is a
longtime supporter of children’s hospitals
through her Lopez Family Foundation.
She is the latest celebrity to join CMN
Hospitals’ efforts to raise funds and
awareness. In the ads, Lopez wears a

What is Dance Dash?
If you love to dance or love to dash, this Dance Dash 5k is for you!
Dance Dash combines dancing and running/walking throughout a 5k, all to help our Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Each mile, learn
a new dance move, then join new friends and old in a giant flash mob
at the end!
