South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, gained independence in July 2011, following a peace agreement negotiated in 2005. Before its split from the larger Sudan, the country had been at civil war for more than 50 years between the Muslim North and the Christian South. Many We: people thought this split between North and South would • Love God and neighbor. • Pray in the celebration of the result in lasting peace for the young nation. However, in Sacraments and receive grace. December 2013, the nation was back to civil war as a result • Serve sacrificially with time, of a power struggle between the two main tribes. Tens of talent and treasure. thousands have died in the last two and half years despite • Proclaim the good news of several peace agreements. Peace seems elusive for this Salvation. young nation. We have seen in many parts of the world how Empowered by the Holy Spirit, and peace between warring groups can be so elusive. How do we with Mama Mary to help us, we really achieve true peace? journey in hope to Heaven. Jesus, in the gospel today, bequeathed his peace to his disciples before departing from this earth. He has given us the legacy of peace, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give PARISH GOVERNANCE to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let Finance Council your hearts be troubled or afraid.” How does the world give Deacon Robert Holgren peace? It gives through negotiated settlements, ceasefires 858-484-1070, ext. 308 [email protected] and truces. It is always a compromise that is never perfect as Gerald Hopkins calls it, “Piecemeal peace is poor Pastoral Council peace.” The world gives its piecemeal peace grudgingly, Fr. Anthony Saroki reluctantly and suspiciously. One hand reaches pretends to [email protected] give peace the other is ready to take it back. Eucharistic Adoration First Friday in the Worship Space 8:30am - 6:00pm Morning Prayers After weekday Mass, a group gathers in the chapel to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, and prayers for the Souls in Purgatory. All are welcome to join in. So how does Jesus give us his peace? His peace comes with his presence. He is our peace (Ephesians 2:14). Wherever he is, there is peace because his peace is inseparable with his person. The peace of Christ is peace in our own hearts. Possessing Christ does not necessarily mean that there would be no turmoil and conflicts in our lives. There are many things which will disturb and challenge us in the world, but with Christ with us we will always experience inner peace which the world cannot take away from us. What is peace? St. Augustine describes peace beautifully: The first is “the serenity of the mind” that is, allowing Jesus First Fridays at 6:00pm to take control of our thoughts, our fears and our worries. Encounter Second Fridays 7:00pm The second is “the simplicity of the heart” that is, being Both in the Church contented with what we have and what we have received as Bulletin Submissions gifts from God, and finally, the third is “the tranquility of the Requests are due at least 10 days soul” that is, being fully reconciled with God and others. Healing Services prior to the weekend requested for publication. Orbos, SVD advices us, “Don’t let anything or anyone destroy your peace. Keep your peace. If you get angry, you lose your peace. If you worry, you lose your peace. If you get upset, you’ve been set up!” Let us pray as St. Francis of Assisi, “Lord make us instruments of your peace.” Peace be with you! Fr.
