In light of the priest abuse scandals being in the news again due
to the public release of clergy abuse files from the past, the Archdiocese wanted to put out the following information, detailing the programs that have been in place for several years now so that children
and young people will have a safe environment in our parishes and
schools. Please continue to pray for victims of sexual abuse, and
that we as a Church can move forward and make progress in no
longer being a part of the problem, but rather being a part of the
solution to ending sexual abuse in our society. This is also a good
time to highlight the importance of all parish volunteers, liturgical
ministers, and leaders to adhere to the Safeguard the Children program in our parish and to make sure that background fingerprinting
is done and that you attend the VIRTUS training workshops. Thank
you all for your support and faith!

KEEPING CHILDREN SAFE
Each of our 287 parishes and schools has a Safeguard the Children Committee and all adults who work with or around children are
required to undergo VIRTUS abuse prevention training and must
submit to background checks and screening. Just this past week,
for example, nearly 80 adults received their VIRTUS training and
certification at the Cathedral under the capable direction of Joan
Vienna, the Coordinator of our Safeguard the Children office. That
‘story’ is being repeated all the time and all year round throughout
the Archdiocese. In fact, literally tens of thousands of our adult
Catholics have been so certified during the past ten years.
Catholic School students and children in Religious Education
programs undergo age appropriate abuse prevention instruction. As
a result, we now have a generation of students who will have gone
through a whole ‘cycle’ of formation. That is, they will have experienced some form of Safeguard the Children training and education
every year during which they have been under our care. To date
that amounts to over one million children!
Priests, Deacons, school faculty and administrators and other
staff members in our parishes and schools are mandated reporters
and regularly receive training in how to report child abuse or endangerment to civil authorities. Children are certainly safer with us than
they are in many other institutions in our nation.
We have a tremendous resource in our Office of Victims Assistance Ministry the work of which we should all be proud. Suzanne
Healy, the Coordinator of that office, like Joan Vienna, puts in untold
hours and incredible amounts of heartfelt compassion and patience
in taking care of victims of abuse.
The Archdiocese has spent over $ 400,000 in our child protection
efforts-training programs, background checks, fingerprinting, etc.-in
the past calendar year. There is nothing comparable in terms of
investment in safety programs for children here in Los Angeles. For
the first time since the implementation of the US Bishop’ Charter for
the Protection Young People in 2002, a secular news organization
has published a story on our child protection efforts. The story was

MANTENIENDO SEGUROS A LOS NIÑOS
Cada una de nuestras 287 parroquias y escuelas tiene un Comité de
Protección a los Niños. Además, todos los adultos que trabajan con niños
o cercanos a ellos, tienen que participar de la capacitación VIRTUS para
la prevención de abusos, y también están obligados a someterse a la

que con muchas otras instituciones en nuestra nación.
Tenemos múltiples recursos en nuestra Oficina del Ministerio de Asistencia a las Victimas, de cuya labor todos deberíamos estar orgullosos.

VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children™ Program
VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children Adult Awareness Session is a three-hour training
that helps clergy, staff, volunteers and parents to understand the facts and myths about
child abuse; how perpetrators operate; and how caring adults can take five important
steps to keep children safe. The parent session also stresses monitoring of computers,
cell phones and other technology that perpetrators use to gain access to children and

fingerprinted. In the Parish we all work near children—All Saint Mary’s volunteers must be fingerprinted.

Adding Up Our Parish & School Child Protection Efforts
It has been more than 10 years since the implementation of the US Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Charter
contains practical and pastoral steps that address allegations of sexual abuse, prevent future abuse, and help abuse victims through the healing process. Over the past decade, more than 200,000 adults and more than 1 million children have undergone abuse awareness and prevention sessions in
archdiocesan parishes and schools. More than 5,000 VIRTUS® sessions have been conducted, making access to this important training easily
available. Additionally, the archdiocese continues to be one of the largest private organizations in California to fingerprint employees and volunteers -- 121,000 to date -- who work with our children.

Learn Natural Family Planning —Natural Family Planning refers to natural, healthy, and morally acceptable methods of family planning recommended by the Catholic Church to help
couples achieve or postpone pregnancy. These methods use daily observations of signs and symptoms that reflect the hormonal changes within a woman's menstrual cycle. Couples
can learn how to interpret these in order to recognize the natural fertile and infertile phases of the cycle in order to achieve or avoid a pregnancy. This knowledge can be applied to
regular or irregular cycles. Natural Family Planning can be used during a woman's entire fertile years, even during periods of breastfeeding and pre-menopause.
Natural Family Planning allows married couples be one in body as well as one in heart and mind, because it allows for more time to communicate, more time to rekindle common
interests, and more time to nurture feelings. There are monthly instructions at St. Mary's at 10:00 am on Saturdays, on the last Saturday of the month in Our Lady of Guadalupe
