YOLANDA MCCOMB, PRINCPAL
From the Desk of our Principal,
Mrs. Yolanda McComb
Dear Raymond Parents,
Yes it is true, our state assessments have changed and this year we will pilot a
national assessment. Because of this, NO student reports will be provided to parents
or schools by the State this year for Reading or Math. Starting in the 2014-2015
school year, the testing system will be fully operational and student reports will be
provided to schools and parents. The California Science exam in 5th and 8th will stay
the same this year and will be given using the STAR state exam as usual. The Science
exam will probably change the following year.
This all came about because of Assembly Bill 484, passed on October 2, 2013, for a
change in our statewide student assessment system and was signed into law by the
State legislature. This bill replaces the current Standardized Testing and Reporting
(STAR) program with computer-based English Language Arts and Mathematics
assessments in grades 3 through 8 for the Spring of 2014.
The California Department of Education (CDE) and the Smarter Balanced
consortium (SBAC) have each posted a questions & answers webpage that answers
many of the questions regarding AB 484 as well as the online field test this upcoming
Spring.
CDE Q & A: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/ab484qa.asp
SBAC Q & A: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/smarterftqa.asp
In addition, SBAC has posted online practice tests that allow teachers, students,
parents, and other interested parties to experience the features of online testing and
gain insight into how Smarter Balanced will assess students’ mastery of the
standards. Please visit the Fullerton School District Common Core Parent website
(http://tinyurl.com/fsd-parent-cc) to access the online practice tests.
Sincerely,
Yolanda McComb

PAST EVENTS
Recorder Concert
Second grade teachers, Ms. Lee, Ms. Joo and Mrs.
Tirado had the pleasure of taking three of their
students to lunch at Polly’s Pies recently. The students
had bid on “Lunch with a Teacher” at the Raymond Fall
Carnival back in October. Students who enjoyed this
fun lunch were Jacob A., Henry P. and
Samantha C.
Fourth graders performing at their recorder concert!
All fourth grade students at Raymond joined together to
learn to play the recorder and perform songs in a concert for
their families this past Fall.
The lessons and instruments were provided by
Fullerton’s Friends of Jazz organization. Friends of Jazz is
an all-volunteer group dedicated to instilling an appreciation
for jazz music and introducing children to music
performance. Our students are fortunate to have this
musical experience be a part of their lessons at Raymond.
Holiday Concerts
Raymond students from the
transitional kindergarten level up
to the third grade sang their hearts
out at their holiday concerts this
past December! Ms. Joo, Ms. Lee
and Mrs. Tirado’s classes
performed in their pajamas comfortably fun!

FIELD TRIPS
Griffith Observatory
Just before winter break, the fifth grade had a great time touring the Griffith Observatory
and boy were they excited to talk about it! Ronald told me about how they went back in time
(“time travel”?) and saw the Earth’s solar system projected all across the ceiling in a huge room.
Ron said “we went underwater and got soaking wet! Just kidding.” They did get sprayed with a
mist, however. Sergio explained how they watched a comet being made, for real! They mixed
“charcoal, dry ice, water and sand and then squished it”. Lorenzo
remembered the
telescope, maybe 16 feet long, but said you could only see through it
when the sky is clear ... and it wasn’t clear that day.
Jesse told me about CHNOPS which was “important to
remember”. This stands for the six most essential elements making
up living things. They recalled several of the elements including
Sulphur, Nitrogen and Oxygen. Also super impressive was the
Tesla Coil which produces lightning bolts!
According to Leo, “Everyone ate lunch together on the grass”.
This trip also included seeing the Hollywood sign and lots of
singing and sleeping on the bus!
A crew
Aquarium of the Pacific
In mid-December, Ms. Lee, Ms. Joo and Mrs. Tirado’s second grade
classes visited the Long Beach Aquarium! What a fun time they had
exploring and touching and learning about marine life up close and
personal. I spoke to 2nd grade students, Jessica and Olivia, who
recounted their experience touching “hard” sharks, “squishy” jellyfish, and
“silky” stingrays. They told me about watching penguins swim, seeing a giant
spider, and learning about diving birds. They saw pretty rainbow birds but
weren’t allowed to touch them and the whale inside the Aquarium building
was so, so big. “No, it wasn’t alive.” The bus ride was long, but they had a
nice little nap. A fun trip to Long Beach!

ELAC
Ms. Crystal Tello, staff member extraordinaire at Raymond,
recently led the ELAC parent group in an iPad training session.
With most students utilizing these devices in class, parents were
anxious to learn about how they work and how to help their
children. Ms. Tello instructed ELAC parents on how to navigate
the classroom websites through the Fullerton School District
portal. Parents in attendance also all have their own email
address now, if they didn’t previously. A big thank-you to sixth
grade students from Mr. Jacobs class, Rebecca D. and Carlos
S., for assisting Ms. Tello in this training, using both their affinity
for easily grasping iPad concepts and their bilingual skills. Ms.
Tello’s duties at Raymond include office clerk and substitute
teacher.

Fullerton College Student Returns
A former Raymond
student, Felipe G., now a
student at Fullerton
College, is volunteering in
the resource program,
much to Mrs. Maiwald’s
excitement. He wants to
volunteer in the resource
program because he is
considering a career as an

education specialist. Felipe
is very enthusiastic about making an impact on students’ lives.
He is volunteering for our Raymond community because that is,
in his words, “where it all started”. He shared with her students
how the extra support he received in the program helped him
become a proficient reader. What a wonderful role model!
Thank you, Felipe!
aprender rápido el uso de los iPads y sus habilidades bilingües. El trabajo de La Señorita Tello en Raymond incluye;
recepcionista y maestra substituta. Grants
Kindergarten teachers Mrs. Collar and
Mrs. Ettinger wrote grants and, as a result,
were awarded over $3,500! This is to be
used for ten new iPad mini’s and apps geared toward
S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math) lessons. Students are designing container
gardens and will document the growth of their
plants on iPads. Great work, teachers!

MEET THE TEACHERS
Mrs. Vanover is a fifth grade teacher at Raymond and is
team-teaching with Ms. Porter. She has been in the teaching
business 13 years, ten of which have been with the
Raymond Raccoons. She’s been well-known in
the second grade forum for quite some time and
this year made the switch to fifth. Mrs. Vanover’s
free time is spent cooking, working out and
playing with her young daughter, Audrey.
Previous summer vacations have been spent
doing lots of traveling with her husband but this
year the two of them spent all their time
adjusting to being new parents and not getting
much sleep.

TO BE CONTINUED...
McComb
Querido Padres de Raymond,
Sí, es verdad, nuestras evaluaciones
estatales han cambiado y este año vamos
a pilotar una evaluación nacional. Debido a
CDE Q & A: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/ab484qa.asp
SBAC Q & A: http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sa/smarterftqa.asp
Además , SBAC ha publicado pruebas de
práctica en línea que permiten a los
profesores, estudiantes, padres y otras
Sinceremente,
Sra. Yolanda McComb
