S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 1 Working with our Neighbors – By Lighting the Way Streetlights can help keep neighborhoods safe. Studies have shown that properly located streetlights can help reduce accidents and discourage street crime. UI maintains most of the streetlights in the communities it serves, except New Haven, which owns and maintains its streetlights. A streetlight may need repair if it does not come on at night, if it’s blinking or if it stays on all day. You can report a streetlight problem by calling 1-800-7-CALL UI (1-800-722-5584) or by visiting our website, www.uinet.com — look for “Report a Problem”. Be prepared to provide the following information to help us locate the streetlight: E The address where the streetlight is located or a good description of the location, including the closest cross street. E The pole number, which is located at eye level on the street side of the pole. E Your name and telephone number. To report streetlight problems in New Haven, call 203-946-6091. EFFICIENT LIGHTING: A BRIGHT IDEA As days grow shorter, here are ways to choose the right bulb for the task You can save money and energy by replacing incandescent bulbs with ENERGY STAR®-qualified Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs (CFLs). But choosing the right bulb can be a confusing task. Efficient CFLs use fewer watts of electricity to create the same amount of light emitted by incandescent bulbs. So it doesn’t make sense to compare wattage. Instead, look at lumens, the true measurement of brightness and light output. A 100watt incandescent bulb yields about 1,600 lumens. The equivalent CFL uses just 26 watts for the same output of 1,600 lumens. The chart below shows the light output in lumens for standard incandescent bulbs compared with CFLs and other bulb types. Use this to help simplify your purchasing decisions. For more information on ENERGY STAR lighting or other energy efficiency programs offered in Connecticut, call 1-877 WISE USE or visit www.CTEnergyInfo.com LUMENS: A NEW WAY OF LOOKING AT LIGHT More Lumens = More Light * FROM A LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS Fall is a good time for businesses to evaluate their lighting needs. UI’s comprehensive outdoor lighting program, Light the Night, is the easiest and most affordable way to improve the outdoor lighting on your property for safety, security, beautification, or all of the above. One low monthly price includes high-quality fixtures, installation on a utility pole, lifetime maintenance, bulb replacement and your electricity costs! To check up on your outdoor lighting today, call UI at 1-866-99-LITES (1-866-995-4837). HOW TO GET IN TOUCH You’re important to us. Here’s how we can be reached. Para que revisemos su iluminación exterior ahora, llame a UI al 1-866-99-LITES (1-866-995-4837). 800-7-CALL UI (800-722-5584) Or in the Greater New Haven calling area, dial 203-499-3333.
