Nuevo Magazine LUXIONA
LUXIONA magazine Nº1 mayo/may 2016 CHILE UN EQUIPO CON POTENCIAL A TEAM WITH POTENTIAL ¿SABES DE DÓNDE VIENE LA MARCA TROLL? DO YOU KNOW THE ORIGIN OF TROLL BRAND? PROJECTS Louvre Abu Dhabi MUSEUM SIGUE FOLLOW LUXIONA EN REDES SOCIALES LUXIONA IN SOCIAL MEDIA 1 EDITORIAL CEO Con gran ilusión me complace presentaros la nueva revista interna de Luxiona 368. I am most excited to welcome you to the new Luxiona 368 in-house magazine. Why 368? In an ironic twist of fate, it is up to me to tell you about colours… 368 is the number corresponding to the Pantone colour of LUXIONA’s green. Green signifies a thing that has equilibrium and harmony, and implies growth. It is also one of the three primary colours that make up white light, and furthermore, green lies in the middle of the visible light spectrum, a point in symphony with the other colours. And for us, green also expresses respect for the environment and represents our firm commitment to publicise and implement new technologies based on the application of energy efficiency solutions. But from now on, 368 will be much more than just a colour for LUXIONA. 368 seeks to be a meeting place for everybody who contributes to life at LUXIONA. As a company, we are going through an exciting time, and our sector, after a few difficult years, is facing new and challenging horizons. Our goal is to transform LUXIONA into a global company, a worldwide leader in professional illumination, but preserving that local flavour that differentiates us and gives us meaning. We have a great team and 368 will be the vehicle for internal communication which will let us know each other better and encourage a spirit of belonging to a great group and a great humanitarian business project. When the year 2013 began, the activities of Luxiona Chile were set in motion as well. The first task was to find a place for the Luxiona story to unfold. This task took six months for several reasons: the country’s situation, economic crisis and all the classic obstacles that can hinder the starting of a new company. The first six months were ones of remote and itinerant work, re-establishing contact with customers and announcing Luxiona’s arrival in Chile. In June of the same year, the team established themselves in an office strategically located in the financial district of the city of Santiago. Luxiona Chile’s first year ended with the completion of an emblematic project, a shopping centre in Copiapó in the north of Chile. The team, comprising María Paz David, grew with the addition of Pia Larenas to the sales department. During the second year, Lorena Paiva became a member, resulting in the current structure of Luxiona Chile. Somos 4 arquitectas, diseñadoras e ingeniero comercial con una mente luminosa” EL EQUIPO IN CHILE IS IN REALITY “LA” EQUIPO Whether by accident or design, it turns out that they are all women, which never fails to attract attention when they receive visits from other branches of the group. According to María Paz David, Commercial and Marketing Director of Luxiona Chile, “starting from scratch inspires a synergy and a special commitment from us. This means that general tasks can be shared and understood by everyone. Via time and the workload, they are already starting to define themselves and separate out, but without losing the friendship they feel. 8 Discussing the achievements of Luxiona Chile is complex when one visualizes it as a growing project. We are still developing and, honestly, I see more challenges to overcome than objectives that have been met. Looking back over our short record of accomplishment, I can highlight what we managed in terms of getting the brand recognised within the lighting design market in a short space of time. At the end of 2013, we had already been selected for a number of projects and it was reassuring to receive blueprints, or orders for parts from our brand. And though it may sound simplistic, the fact that we managed to set up our company structure, office, logistics and operations, and started importing and making our first sales in less than 6 months, was the starting point that inspired us not to stop, and to keep thinking big. We typically establish concrete objectives, and then manage the various routes to meet them in a flexible manner. Having a light structure allows us flexibility, and we take advantage of this opportunity. We have been growing continuously for 3 years, which has involved a lot of learning. We visualise attractive short-term and long-term challenges, and we go for them. And all of them are successes that we meet with along the way. Of all the values of Luxiona, could you choose one and explain how you uphold it on a day-to-day basis? Trying to answer this question, I realised that the views could not just be mine and mine alone. I therefore asked every one of us how they would describe the key value of Luxiona Chile in one word. Logic suggests that you would only get four words back. In practise, as we are all women, there were many more than four, obviously. What is important is what they said: service, proactivity, solutions, prompt delivery, comprehensive outcomes, illuminating experiences, bonds with customers, synergy and commitment. From day to day, a serious, constant work ethic is upheld, having clear objectives and the backing of a worldwide brand and team. It is easier knowing that we have the support and collaboration of people who have been vital to our development and growth. Such as Miguel Ángel Gómez who have supported us enormously since the start, and Teresa Celdrán, of course and now we feel very supported by the team of Peru, Ramiro Espinosa, José Lancho and Dani Puga. For some years now the market has only been demanding LEDs, it is the only trend at the moment. Lately, we have noticed improved maturity and people are now talking more in terms of lumens than watts, for example. In addition, terms such as “LM80, McAdams” and other specific details can be found in the specifications. This is beneficial for us because it allows us to filter out the massive East Asian market that we encounter on the national market. We are at the stage where we have to be very technical and strive to educate the market and or clients, bringing specifications at an adequate, coherent level to our portfolio of products. Troll is a brand that has been present in Chile for approximately 20 years. Throughout those years, Troll has had a good presence in Chile and has been very well received by lighting designers, being regularly ordered for their projects. Over the last few years, Troll has lost ground on the market, but as of 2013, with the creation of Luxiona Chile, Troll is gaining more presence and is a growing project. Sagelux was not a brand marketed in Chile until the establishment of the Luxiona Chile office. Little by little, it has managed to gain presence in various projects and attract orders from electrical engineers and lighting designers. All projects designed at Luxiona Chile incorporate emergency lighting and signage as part of the solution. With very good feedback and growing sales. “I think that Sagelux has a very safe place on the national market. Both for its signage lighting lines and its emergency batteries.” Luxiona Chile orders Metalarte lighting as part of its projects. Results are still weak. Eda T by Metalarte has been sold by the Embassy and Palace of the Chancellery of Brazil. The strategy for this year with the help of Tomeu Gomila is relaunch the brand with a workshop scheduled for June with product consultants with the goal of introducing us to this new and largely unexplored decoration market through Luxiona Chile. It represents 40% of our sales and there are two distinct channels. Via lighting designers and self-development of illumination projects for dispatches by constructors and architects specialised in outfitting offices. Essence T5 and LEDs from Troll are very widely accepted for their good performance and design. Ultimately, trade products by Troll such as Basic, Panel LED and DownLED achieve good results. For specialized sectors, the Snake by Luxiona Poland is an innovative product, different from the traditional ones on the market. Flying Surface has also been sold by Jean Nouvel of Troll, for various projects, such as the central corporate offices of Abertis. Secondly, at Luxiona Chile we work on shopping centres and retail projects. For the illumination of public areas of shopping centres, we use products such as Basic or Elite Troll. For accent lighting, the retail segment seeks to combine neutral, elegant lighting design with a light output whose look can be controlled easily, proper performance and colour temperature, obviously at a competitive price with fast delivery. The most widely used projectors in Chile are the Lightpod, SpotLED and Spoty Troll in shops such as Doite (outdoors), Singolare (womenswear) and Vince Camuto (shoes). 13 PROJECTS LOUVRE ABU DHABI MUSEUM LUXIONA ILUMINA EL MUSEO DEL LOUVRE EN ABU DHABI Jean Nouvel y Luxiona se han unido para crear la iluminación del singular proyecto del nuevo Louvre de Abu Dhabi. PROJECT Museo Louvre Abu Dhabi ARCHITECT: Jean Nouvel TEAM: Narcís Solé, Carles Galán, Olga Gil y Javi Requena 14 LUXIONA magazine LUXIONA LIGHTS UP THE LOUVRE MUSEUM IN ABU DHABI Jean Nouvel and Luxiona have joined forces to create the illumination for the singular project by the new Louvre in Abu Dhabi. The French architect is employing a conception of light that transcends the visual; he considers it a construction material. To create the effects of light and shadow, Paralum by Troll has been deployed. Paralum is a comprehensive new lighting and roofing system. According to the General Director of the Luxiona Group, Javier Santafé: “We were negotiating extensively with the United Arab Emirates because we are always looking for something that doesn’t exist, something exclusive. We want ideas that can’t be found anywhere in the world”. The team formed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel and Luxiona Spain developed a new modular ceiling system that incorporates a lighting system made of a folding grid. This allows the incorporation of modules for both general and accent lighting, while at the same time, it includes smoke detectors, acoustics, air conditioning and sprinkler modules for fire prevention. It is a false ceiling with decorative slats made of steel sheet and stamped with specular aluminium, which produces an interplay of reflections and light effects. With a size of 600 x 600 millimetres, the sheets form various shapes and make up a false ceiling by which Paralum is concealed. The result, according to Santafé, is a space which by using light and shadow effects, constructs something that is “more than an illusion”. Although the opening of the Arab Louvre was scheduled for December 2015, its doors will not open until the end of 2016. An iconic, upscale project that has been out by the team Export Luxiona Spain, led by Narcís Solé with the support of Carles Galán. Paralum by Jean Nouvel 15 LUXIONA Sabías que... LUXIONA magazine There is no doubt that within the illumination sector, the electrified rail was one of the greatest inventions of the last century. It arrived years ago and revolutionized the illumination market, giving rise to the birth of technical illumination. We feel proud that alongside the discovery of the first electrified rail for electrical appliances in the world, the Troll brand was born. And we are proud to have contributed to the market with this revelatory contribution that has unquestionably now become a solution which can be found in facilities anywhere in the world. In 1961, Federico Schönhöfer and Manuel Clausells invented the first continuous-contact electrified rail for use in sliding electrical appliances (the patent was registered in 1961). The idea was devised by its inventors out of the need to light several single-point lights at a contemporary art exhibition. Up until that point, lighting required moving to the area that was to be illuminated. They needed sockets or a length of conducting wire to allow them to achieve different positions. Fritz Schönhöfer and Manuel Clausells thought up a new system with a sliding connector that did away with this inconvenience. The invention gave rise to the first electrified rail for electric devices in the world, which was baptized with the name Troll. The name was inspired by the trolley bus system of that era. And the name ‘trolley’ became the brand Troll. Thanks to the success of the invention of the electrified rail, the company experienced strong growth that brought about its revitalisation. Thanks to successful further innovations, reliable expertise in lighting technology and a consolidated international prestige, Troll is entering a phase of expansion that has now made it a leading brand in the field of technical lighting, with more than 85 years of history behind it. In 1962, the Troll rail received a Delta (ADI FAD), a prestigious award granted for merit in innovation and creativity. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE SMALL IDEAS BECOME GREAT SOLUTIONS? We live surrounded by so many inventions which we enjoy without even thinking about it, without realising that at some time in the past, they didn’t exist and somebody had to invent them. Ingenious ideas that have made our lives simpler. ¿QUIERES SABER Y CONTRIBUIR A CONTAR LO QUE PASA EN LUXIONA CADA DÍA? DO YOU WANT TO KNOW AND HELP COUNTING WHAT HAPPENS IN LUXIONA? It participated in Electroforum 2016, which was held in Santiago de Compostela, where a successful forum with over 2500 attendees was hosted. It also got involved in the ABM technical conferences in Toledo and organised a workshop at the Metalarte Luxiona head office. In 2003, Ramon Ubeda and Otto Canalda designed INOUT for Metalarte. It originated based on the realisation that there was a gap in the market for a decorative interior lamp – “In” – that could also be installed outside without problems – “Out”. Since then, it has become a hit on the Spanish design market and has enjoyed spectacular success worldwide. We have seen it used in many projects, but this time it has been “hunted down” in the McDonalds media announcement.
