Cuzco is the gateway to magnificent Machu Picchu. To make the most of your experience here are a few helpful tips:
Machu Picchu can only be accessed by train to the town of Aguas Calientes, which lies near the base of the ruins. There are
two train stations to depart from - one outside of Cuzco (Poroy) and one in the nearby Sacred Valley (Ollanta). Your Machu
Picchu visit can be organized as a day-trip from either location, or you can give yourself more time to explore by overnighting in Aguas
Calientes. Shuttle busses to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes run frequently from 5:00 am to 5:30 pm and are included in our packages.
We recommend bypassing Cuzco initially and spending your first night in the Sacred Valley to acclimate to the elevation. Spend your
second night in Aguas Calientes to give yourself two entries into the park. Machu Picchu can be shrouded in fog at any time of the year, so
it is best to give yourself plenty of time to snap the perfect photo.
Finally, head back to Cuzco for a few nights exploring the Inca
capital before continuing on to Lake Titicaca, the Amazonas region
or back to Lima.
The train to Aguas Calientes has a strict one carry-on bag policy.
We arrange to store your extra luggage in Cuzco upon arrival so
you can travel light to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu. All of
our tours to Machu Picchu include a private guide - the cost is
minimal for the freedom to travel the site at your own pace and
not be tied to a large tour group.
If you are planning to hike to the top of the formidable Wayna
Picchu Mountain, advance permits and an overnight in Aguas
Calientes are required. Let us know if you have any special
requests and we will work to design the trip of a lifetime for you!

Extras
Puno is a bustling and often hectic city. We recommend staying at
one of the tranquil lakeside properties. As Titicaca is the highest
navigable lake in the world, it's best to relax on your first day in Puno
to acclimate to the altitude.
In addition to the beauty of the lake itself, the visits to the nearby
islands and their unique cultures are truly special encounters with
living history.
Titicaca straddles the border of Peru and Bolivia and it is easy to
cross between the two countries and see both sides. We arrange trips
to Bolivian Lake Titicaca from Puno to La Paz, vice versa, or roundtrip
from La Paz.
