EJEMPLO Observa el texto “Solar system”, y la tabla siguiente: Solar System Some scientists call our planet “ Spaceship Earth “. Earth, however, is not alone on its trip to space. Earth is only one planet in our solar system. The Sun is the center of the solar system. Circling the Sun are nine planets. Some of these planets have one or more moons in orbits, a circular path, around them. Other objects in space are also part of our solar system. Objects with tails, called comets, circle our Sun. Large chunks of rock called meteors also orbit the Sun. Officially dead It was late afternoon. John Bentley lays on the bed in the semi-darkness. Alone in the back bedroom of the house in Brentwood, and unable to leave it, he had plenty of time to think about what had happened. He and Linda were in big trouble, it seemed to him. He had no identity now, and he was a prisoner in his own home. He tried to imagine his future, but he couldn’t find anything to believe in. He had slept most of the earlier part of the day. But his sleep had been troubled by bad dreams and he had been woken from time to time by the ringing of the telephone. But now he was wide awake, waiting for Linda to return. She had gone to identify the body of her `husband´ and then to make arrangements for his funeral. At last, John could lie still no longer. He went carefully downstairs to the kitchen and made himself a drink. He was still there at five-thirty when Linda came home. She was carrying Collin Fenton’s suitcase. She was furious when she saw John in the kitchen. 1. Palabra raíz Palabra derivada Equivalente en español able prison early dark arrange care Observa cuidadosamente el texto “ The upper berth”. Como estudiaste en el compendio fascicular, hay palabras que pueden sustituirse por otras, con la intención de no causar desinterés en la lectura; estas palabras son los pronombres. The upper berth “The strange thing” ,said the captain, “is that the second man who was lost is supposed to have got out through that same window. It was in the middle of the night, and the weather was very heavy. It was said that one of the windows was open and the sea was running in. I came below and found everything flooded and the window wide open. Well, we managed to shut it, but the water did some damage. Ever since then, the room has smelt of sea water from time to time. We supposed the passenger had thrown himself out, but I don´t see how he did it. I can smell it now, can’t you?”, he asked. “Yes”, I said. “The place must be damp; but when we examined it this morning, everything was perfectly dry. It is most strange. Oh!” CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 9 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II The lamp went out. There was still a good deal of light from a lamp in the passage outside. The ship rolled heavily, and the curtain of the upper berth swung far out into the room and back again. At the same moment the captain jumped to his feet with a loud cry of surprise; I turned and hurried towards him. He was using all his strength on the screw of the window. It seemed to turn against his hands in spite of all his efforts. I quickly picked up the heavy stick that I always used to carry, put it through the ring and pressed down with all my strength. But the strong wood broke suddenly and I fell down. When I rose again, the window was wide open, and the captain was standing with his back against the door, pale to the lips. En el texto, encontrarás algunos ejemplos de esta sustitución, En tu cuaderno de notas elabora el cuadro siguiente: 2. Sujeto Sustitución the passenger the place the captain the window heavy stick Otro tema importante que estudiaste en tu compendio fascicular, es el uso de los verbos modales. Como recordarás: a) Should - deber de conveniencia o sugerencia b) Could - probabilidad futura c) Can - capacidad d) May - probabilidad e) Would - suposición Ahora, en el texto ´Spring time on the menu´, encontrarás 4 oraciones que emplean los diferentes verbos modales. Spring time on the menu O. Henry It was a day in march. Never, never begin a story this way when you write one. No opening could possibly be worse. There is no imagination in it. It is flat and dry. But we can allow it here, because the following paragraph, which should have started the story, is too wild and impossible to be thrown in the face of the reader without preparation. Sarah was crying over the menu. To explain this you may guess that oysters were not listed or that she had ordered onions, or that she had just come from the cinema. But all your guesses are wrong, and you will please let the story continue. En tu cuaderno de notas, infiere su significado de acuerdo al texto. 3. 4. 5. 6. 8. ¿Quién lo escribió? ¿Para quién fue escrito? ¿Cuándo? ¿Cuál es su canal? ¿Por qué se leería? 9. ¿Quién lo escribió? ¿Para quién fue escrito? ¿Cuándo? ¿Cuál es su canal? ¿Por qué se leería? Miscellaneous Mother’s thin hair problem By John Peters My mother’s hair was extremely thin. She was terribly embarrassed by it. You could look right through the hair and see large spots of exposed scalp; and she had split ends. She tried everything available but nothing worked. Today my mother’s hair looks thick and gorgeous; she looks younger, and you would never know she had such a problem. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 12 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II Lee el texto “NGS: Forum” identifica si los apartados A y B son hechos u opiniones: NGS: FORUM Apartado A: BEYOND GRAVITY I disagree with the authors´ opinion that it is an egocentric view to believe that “H. sapiens is the single intelligent life form the cosmos has produced in billions of years on trillions of worlds”. Our current knowledge indicates that it is highly unlikely that life, let alone intelligent life, exists on any other planet in the cosmos and that Earth is a remarkable exception. Future encounters with nonterrestrial life might show us remarkable exceptions in the universe. But in 2001, believing that humans are the only intelligent beings is the most reasonable stand for a scientific mind. Apartado B: EARTHPULSE As a long time fisherman, I appreciated the focus of your January EarthPulse column, “Conserving the Sea”. I was, however, surprised at two omissions. The first is that in 1998 the Canadian Government ended the harvest of Coho salmon by all fishermen on our country’s west coast. The second is that our government had ended the huge and historic cod fishery in Atlantic Canada several years earlier. In both cases the cause was a combination of excessive harvest levels in the past and plummeting marine survival caused by natural phenomena like El Niño. Unprecedent socioeconomic consequences have been borne by coastal communities in an attempt to reverse these declines. 10. Apartado A: _____________________________________ 11. FORMAS VERBALES Y EXPRESIONES TEMPORALES. Ejemplo: _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ The Great Temple The mexicas came from a place called Aztlan (“White place”), somewhere far north of Mesoamerica, being the last nahua speaking group that settles in the Valley of Mexico around the XII and XIII centuries. They started their pilgrimage in the year “One knife”, 1100 A.D., and dwelled in different places temporarily, the last one being Chapultepec, where they had conflicts with other groups already settled in the area. The mexicas were defeated and sent to Culhuacan as prisoners; during their captivity they formed cultural and familiar alliances by marriage. Later on, they were driven out by the Culhuas ending their journey in a marshy island full of reed-grass: and it was in this place where they found the sign which indicated the site to build their city: an eagle perched on a nopal cactus. It was in 1325 A.D. when Tenochtitlan was founded. The mexicas were highly spirited warriors who expanded their realms through war, stablishing an efficient tributary system which secured the possesion of the production from conquered areas. This tributary system laid out the basis in creating a strong economic foothold. The amazing development of their economy was due to the presence of various factors like the control over the labor force, an intensive trade, the tributary system that collected plenty of raw materials and products necessary to the ruler classes, as well as the intense exploitation of their environment. Since the beginning the Mexicas settled in sectors called “calpullis”, which were the basis of the Mexica state. Their rulers planned their city dividing the land in four areas, each one corresponding to one of the four points of the universe, known to us as the four great suburbs: Cuepopan, Moyotlan, Tecpan and Atzacoalco. A small group of the Mexicas decided to inhabit a nearby little island founding the city of Tlatelolco, that years later would be annexed to Tenochtitlan, becoming the fifth section of the Mexica capital city. The Mexica religion was the result of the fusion of theological elements from diverse origins. They believed all phenomenons of life were created by divine forces. They chose a space to build CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 16 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II temples and palaces, where their gods were invoked to show their wrath or kindness and from where power was exerted. The Mexicas sacred space and time are represented in the Great Temple. Myths reflect the believes that constitute their roots and vision of the world, and the cosmic, divine and human history. By means of codices and chronicles written in Nahuatl and Spanish we have become acquainted with those myths, among them the birth of Huitzilopochtli, god of war (Florentine Codex, book III, chapter I). This story begins with the magical conception of Huitzilopochtli. Coatlicue, his mother, as a penance, was sweeping on top of the hill of Coatepec (“hill of the serpent”) when she picked up a small ball of feathers and put it in her bosom, when she looked for it she could not find it but became pregnant. Her daughter and sons, Coyolxauhqui and the Four Hundred Southerners, decided to kill their mother; Huitzilopochtli being in her abdomen consoled her. Led by Coyolxauhqui, the Four Hundred Southerners rushed to murder Coatlicue. But at this moment Huitzilopochtli was born, dressed up for war. He decapitated Coyolxauhqui, whose body fell down the hill dismembering, and pursued and defeated his brothers, the Four Hundred Southerners. This myth relates how the god of the Mexicas was born adorned with all his attributes. The Coyolxauhqui stone relief reminds us what happened on the hill of Coatepec. Coyolxauhqui is a bas-relief monolith of andesite in circular shape with a diameter of 3.25 m. and approximately 8 tons of weight. It represents a decapitated woman, dismembered, with her head laying backwards. She is wearing a headdress of feathers which indicates she is a warrior. On her face, we can see a strip that holds bells. This detail is the one that gives the piece it’s name: “the one with the bells on the cheek”. She is also wearing earplugs of turquoise bearing solar symbols. Her flaccid breasts and abdomen indicate she is an elderly woman. Her arms, legs and wrists are decorated with knotted snakes (terrestrial symbol); on the four extremities we can see small masks which represent the points of power, movement and energy; points that influence the earth in the growth of plants, courses of water, and fertility on women. The skull and the snake around her waist symbolize life and death, the duality. In her extremities, heads of humeruses and femurs can be seen with blood running out, decorated with fire stones. Coyolxauhqui is the goddess of the moon. The moon was considered a very important deity, as she was the opponent of the sun. The Great Temple symbolizes the hill of the original myth, with the carved snake heads that give name to the place: Coatepec (“hill of the snake”). The participants of the struggle are located in the place the myth gave them: Huitzilopochtli on the upper part, on top of the hill-temple, while Coyolxauhqui lays at the base, decapitated and dismembered. On a ritual way the events on the hill of Coatepec were repeated, sacrificing captives on the Great Temple. It was what Huitzilopochtli did to his sister: the immolation of the victim on top of the temple and the launching of the body down the stairs to end up dismembered at the base. These sacrifices, performed thousands of times on the Great Temple, were no more than the reactualization of the myth: the everyday struggle of light against darkness, between day and night, the repetition of something that happened in a mythic time, the daily rise of the sun, the birth of the warrior god. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 17 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II Referring to the Temple of Tlaloc, it probably represents Tonacatepetl (“hill of maintenances”). Chronicles describe some festivities to worship the god of water and deities related with maize and fertility; the ceremonies for the cult were performed on the hill, on the lake, and on the shrine of the Great Temple. The presence of both gods on top of the Great Temple reflects the economic necessity of the Mexicas, based on two main elements: agricultural production - therefore the importance of water and on the other hand, war as means to obtain tribute imposed by conquest. The Great Temple is the living myth, is the need of a group to survive: Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli, water and war, life and death. 16. People of the Nile River Valley The Nile River has always been very important to the people of Egypt. Since most of Egypt is desert, the Nile is the people’s mayor source of fresh water. Since ancient times, farmers have used water from the river for irrigation. They dug canals to carry water from the river to farm fields. Each year, heavy rains at the river’s source caused the Nile to overflow its banks in September. This flooding brought new, fertile soil to the farmers´ fields. The great regularity of the flooding led the Egyptians to create a calendar with 365 days in a year. The consistent northward river current and southward blowing winds made the river a reliable transportation system also. At first, Egypt consisted of autonomous villages. Over time, however, these villages grouped themselves into two kingdoms known as Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. The kingdom closest to the Mediterranean Sea was called Lower Egypt. The kingdom farther up the Nile river was known as Upper Egypt. In about 3100 B.C., Menes, the ruler of Upper Egypt, united the two kingdoms. Menes established the strongest government over so large an area that had existed up to that time. Thus began the period of Egyptian history called the Old Kingdom. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 18 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II By 1680 B.C., Egypt’s government had become weak, and civil war had broken out. The governors of the Egyptian provinces fought among them for the control of the country. Then the Hyksos, a group of people from Asia, attacked Egypt. With their horses and chariots, the Hyksos people easily defeated the Egyptians. The Hyksos burned Egyptian temples, destroyed Egyptian cities, and treated Egyptian people with great cruelty. The Egyptians viewed their century of Hyksos domination as a great humiliation. Finally, an aggressive Egyptian nationalism arose, and Hyksos control was ended. The end of Hyksos domination marked the beginning of a new era in Egyptian history. Called the Empire or New Kingdom, this era lasted from 1580 to 1477 B.C. Led by Thutmose III, Egyptian armies conquered Phoenicia, Syria, and Palestine. Nubia and northern Sudan also fell under Egyptian control. And, during this time, increased trade and booty from the conquered countries made Egypt wealthy. Thebes, the Egyptian capital, became a city of statues, temples and palaces. Puedes identificar que la gran mayoría de estos verbos tiene la terminación E D, que es el sufijo que indica el pasado de los verbos regulares. En otros casos, son las fechas y el contexto lo que te indica el tiempo del verbo. 17. Ahora, basándote en el texto “People of the Nile River Valley”, anota en tu cuaderno de notas los verbos en pasado y busca su significado: Verbo tiempo pasado ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ ________________ Significado _____________ _____________ _____________ _____________ _____________ 18. On a visit to Washington, Energy Secretary Luis Tellez said Mexico was confident of winning the case and will wait for a Commerce Department ruling due on Aug. 9. “We are not going to negotiate with the petitioners,” Tellez told reporters at the end of his three-day visit, which included meetings with Energy Secretary Bill Richardson and strategy talks with Mexico legal team. Save Domestic oil, an Oklahoma-based group representing small U.S. oil producers, filed a dumping case with the Commerce Department last month accusing Mexico, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia and Iraq of selling subsidized crude oil in the United States. Dumping is defined as selling below market price. Richardson wants to try to bring the parties together and mediate a solution before Commerce issues is ruling early next month. “We think at the end of the day that we’re right and we will win our position,” Tellez said. Mexico, Venezuela, and Saudi Arabia are working together to coordinate their strategy. However, in case the Commerce Department rules in favor of the U.S. oil producers, and eventually imposes dumping duties on Mexican crude, Tellez said Mexico is studying new markets for its oil. “We won´t be caught off guard,” he said. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 21 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II The independent U.S. oil producers are seeking anti-dumping duties against the four countries´ oil exports ranging from 177 percent on Venezuelan oil to 33 percent for Mexican crude. The petition also asks for a countervailing duty to offset alleged government subsidies it says averaged 6.18 dollars a barrel. The duties would likely make oil from the four countries too expensive, forcing U.S. importers to look for new suppliers. The U.S. producers claim foreign oil was dumped from April 1998 to March 1999. During this time, the targeted countries exported 1.66 billion barrels of crude to the United States, representing 52 percent of U.S. oil imports, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. If the duties are imposed, Tellez said Mexico will ask for the creation of a dispute under the North American Free Trade Agreement to reverse them. Mexico has already taken retaliatory action just for the filing of the dumping case. If the Commerce Department rules that the dumping case can go forward, the U.S. International Trade Commission will have until early September to issue a preliminary ruling on whether U.S. oil producers were financially injured. Asked if Mexico would consider joining OPEC if the U.S. government eventually imposed dumping duties, Tellez said no. “Mexico will have an independent oil policy”, he said. 24. Como podrás ver, las frases que contienen el auxiliar Will en el texto anterior, afirman o niegan una acción futura. Para complementar tu manejo del auxiliar will, en tu cuaderno de notas, transforma estas oraciones en preguntas en las líneas marcadas con la letra A, y en el segundo juego de líneas, rescríbelas usando la contracción del auxiliar como se muestra en la siguiente tabla: Pronombre + auxiliar will I will You will He will She will It will We will You will They will Contracción + Verbo en su forma simple I´ll You’ll He’ll She’ll It’ll We’ll You’ll They’ll + Verbo en su forma simple A1.___________________________________________________________________ A2. __________________________________________________________________ A3. __________________________________________________________________ A4. __________________________________________________________________ A5. __________________________________________________________________ A6. __________________________________________________________________ A7. __________________________________________________________________ B1. ___________________________________________________________________ B2. ___________________________________________________________________ B3. ___________________________________________________________________ B4. ___________________________________________________________________ B5. ___________________________________________________________________ B6. ___________________________________________________________________ B7. Sarah isn’t here. She has gone to the doctor’s. She had an appointment ________. 30. I´ll go and see the dentist _____________. 31. I’m sorry. I won´t be here ____________. Can we meet _________ week? Otra forma de expresar el tiempo futuro, es utilizando la estructura going to + el verbo en su forma simple. En su forma afirmativa, se utiliza el verbo to be + estructura + verbo en forma simple. EJEMPLO I am going to open the door. Yo voy a abrir la puerta. I’m listening to your program tomorrow. Yo voy a escuchar tu programa mañana. Para expresar una acción en forma negativa, se utiliza la partícula not después del verbo to be. Pronombre + verbo to be + not I am not You are not He is not She is not It is not We are not You are not They are not Estructura Verbo en forma simple open Going to sing read etc. En el texto “Aubrey´s diary”, realiza las siguientes actividades: a) En tu cuaderno de notas, copia el texto y subraya la expresión going to, en todas las frases en las que la encuentres. b) Encierra en un círculo el concepto que precede a cada going to. Aubrey’s diary Dear diary, CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 24 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II It’s twelve o’clock. I’m going to have dinner with Franco. We´ve just got engaged. My mom is going to set everything up. We’re not going to have a traditional wedding. We’re having an alternative ceremony in a chapel by a lake on a midsummer’s night. Then we’re going to march under the moonlight up to a rose garden where the reception is going to be held. Franco is going to wear a tuxedo and a silver bow-tie, to match my dress. I’m wearing his mother’s silver tiara. A friend of us, Gabriel, is going to sing with his band. At the reception, we’re serving wine, cheese and Cordon blue dishes. Then we’re leaving the reception after the first dance to catch our plane. For our honeymoon, we’re going to Greece and the Philippines. I hope the weather’s going to be good for us. EJEMPLO We’re going to make new friends to be acción a realizar Traducción: nosotros vamos a hacer nuevos amigos. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 25 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II Simple conditional You would not drink. Simple conditional contracted You wouldn’t drink. Pospretérito Tu no beberías. Si el enunciado es en forma interrogativa en simple conditional, would lo inicia. Would you drink? ¿Beberías? NOTA: Al ser un auxiliar, would no tiene traducción directa al español. USOS DE WOULD En inglés, el simple conditional también se conoce como el future in the past, es decir el futuro en el pasado. Para que comprendas como puede el futuro estar en el pasado, observa los ejemplos: Friday (viernes) “I´ll go to Franco’s party tonight”, said Aubrey. “Voy a la fiesta de Franco esta noche” dijo Aubrey Saturday (sábado) Aubrey said she would go to Franco’s party yesterday. Aubrey dijo que iría a la fiesta de Franco ayer. Lo que Aubrey dijo el viernes fue repetido al día siguiente. Lo que el viernes era futuro, se convirtió el sábado en simple conditional, o sea una forma de expresar el futuro en el pasado. Otro uso muy común que tiene el auxiliar would, es expresar el deseo de realizar una acción. Se expresa en tiempo presente como una posibilidad de lo que nos gustaría hacer en el futuro, como viajar por el mundo en el ejemplo: I’d like to travel round the world. Me gustaría viajar alrededor del mundo. I’d visit many countries. Visitaría muchos países. I’d go by plane. Iría en avión. It´d be interesting. Sería interesante. Would tiene otras funciones que solo mencionaremos: pedir algo a alguien de manera cortés, dar una idea de hábito en el pasado y expresar condición. Observa y lee con atención el texto “The income-tax man”. The Income-Tax man Mark Twain The first notice that was taken of me when I settled down recently, was by a gentleman who said he was an assessor, a word that I did not understand very well. I said I had never heard of his branch of business before, but I was very glad to see him in spite of that - would he sit down? He CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 26 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II sat down. I did not have anything particular to say, but I felt that people who have arrived at the important position of keeping a house must be conversational, must be easy and friendly in society. So, as I could think of nothing else to say, I asked him if he was opening his shop in our neighborhood. He said he was. (I did not wish to appear to know nothing, but I had hoped he would mention what he had for sale.) ‘How is trade?’ I asked him. And he said ‘Fair’. I then said we would visit his shop, and if we liked it as well as any other, we would give him our business. He said he thought we would like his place of business well enough to use no other - he said he had never met anybody who would go off and hunt up another man in the same kind of business after trading with him once. That sounded rather too confident; but the man looked honest enough. I do not know how it happened exactly, but gradually we appeared to become more friendly in our conversation, and then everything went along very comfortably. We talked and talked and talked - at least I did; and we laughed and laughed and laughed - at least he did. But all the time my mind was working hard. I was determined to find out all about his business in spite of his mysterious answers - and I was determined that I would get it out of him without him knowing what I was doing. I intended to trap him with a deep, deep trick. I would tell him all about my own business; and he would naturally grow to like me so much that he would forget to be careful, and he would tell me all about his affairs before he realized what I was trying to do. Ahora, aplica las estrategias de predicción y contesta las siguientes preguntas en tu cuaderno de notas: 37. ¿Quién escribió el texto? __________________________________________ 38. ¿Cuál era la profesión del otro hombre? _______________________________ 39. ¿En dónde se encuentran? _________________________________________ 40. ¿De qué hablan? ________________________________________________ Subraya los enunciados en donde aparezca el verbo auxiliar would. Pronombre I You He She It We You They Verbo auxiliar haven’t haven’t hasn´t hasn´t hasn´t haven’t haven’t haven’t Verbo en pasado participio opened ridden written etc. Forma interrogativa Para realizar una pregunta se inicia con el auxiliar + pronombre + verbo en pasado participio. Have you done the homework? ¿Has hecho la tarea? Has Iain gone fishing? ¿Ha ido Iain de pesca? Auxiliar Have Have Has Has Has Have Have Have Pronombre I You He She It We You They Verbo en pasado participio Opened? Ridden? Written? etc.? Es muy importante que no olvides que el present perfect se usa para indicar que una acción se ha realizado con anterioridad un número indefinido de veces. Dicha acción, empezó a ejecutarse en el pasado, continúa ejecutándose en el presente y hay cierta posibilidad de que siga en el futuro. Sabes que el verbo have/has significa tener, pero en este caso es el verbo auxiliar de la estructura, que ayuda al verbo principal a formar el tiempo present perfect. Entonces have/has aquí significa haber. El verbo principal debe escribirse en pasado participio, como lo encuentras en tu lista de verbos. En los verbos regulares no hay problema, pues el pasado participio y el pasado de los verbos, son iguales en su escritura; sin embargo difieren, en su significado. Debes tener cuidado para no confundirlo con la contracción del verbo to be. He´s a student. He´s studied. El es un estudiante El ha estudiado. to be present perfect Así como has, have también puede contraerse (´ve). Usos del present perfect Se usa principalmente para describir una acción que empieza a realizarse en el pasado, que continúa realizándose en el presente y que probablemente, seguirá en el futuro. Pasado Se inicia la acción Presente Continua la acción Futuro Posibilidad de continuidad You have studied English for one semester. Tú has estudiado Inglés durante un semestre. It is now a wonderful museum, but it has a very long, interesting history. Chapultepec means “Hill of the grasshopper” in Nahuatl. The Aztecs had built a religious center and a residence for Aztec rulers on Chapultepec Hill around 1325. After the spaniards came to Mexico, they built a chapel on the same place. By 1780 they had started the construction of a summer palace. By 1841, it had become the National Military Academy. In 1847, during a battle between Mexico and the United States, the cadets of the Military Academy made the place even more famous, because many young cadets had died in the battle after fighting bravely. Earth Almanac Alligators are back, in the Wild and on the Farm They have proved to be as tough as their hides. American alligators were wiped out in parts of the southeast by unchecked hunting and habitat loss. The species was declared endangered in 1967. With protection and successful management programs, gators staged a spectacular comeback and by 1987 were considered recovered throughout their range. They now number perhaps three million, most in Florida and Louisiana, and are again legally hunted. Meanwhile, demand for their meat - trendy cuisine in chic New Orleans restaurants - and for hides to be used in shoes and purses has created a lively industry in farmed alligators. Many Florida-raised gators are growing bigger, faster, and tastier, says Paul Cardeilhac, a University of Florida veterinarian. He has improved farmed alligators´ diet, adding red meat to their standard fish fare, which increases fertility and improves their flavor. A special breeding pond includes deep areas to encourage mating and secluded spots for females to nest. “We’ve quadrupled the alligators, reproductive rate, doubled their growth rate, and reduced mortality from 35 percent to about one percent “, says Cardeilhac. And success breeds conservation: “Now there’s a lot less reason to take an alligator out of the wild.” 61. The wonderful world of plastics A. It might be better to call the period in which we live the age of chemistry instead of the age of space. The work of chemists has not attracted the same headlines and public attention as the exploration of space. Nevertheless, it has had a much greater effect on our daily life. For example, the medicines called antibiotics, unknown before World War II, have brought under control many diseases that used to kill thousands of people annually. For another example, the insecticides and fertilizers developed in the last few years have caused a revolution in agriculture. But the group of chemically sintetized substances that we call plastics have changed our everyday living most of all. B. Almost all of today’s consumer goods - cars, TV sets, radios, refrigerators, typewriters and on and on - contain parts that are made out of plastics. Communications, transportation, and construction are only three of the industries that depend on plastics to a greater or lesser degree. Plastics are just about everywhere around us nowadays; indeed, we take them so much for granted that we are hardly aware of how important they have become. C. Plastics are materials that become viscous-sticky and thick like mud without changing into liquids. In their viscous state they can be shaped and molded. When they are hardened, they hold the shape given when they were viscous. Plastics by this definition exist in nature and have been used as a resource for mankind since ancient times. Wax and clay are both examples of natural plastics. D. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 37 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II Rubber is another natural plastic, but it had to be treated chemically before it could be used widely. The growth of the rubber industry was in many ways a forerunner of the remarkable development of synthetic plastics. Raw rubber does not hold its shape until it has been heated and mixed with sulphur. This process was discovered by Charles Goodyear in 1839. It made possible the commercial use of rubber for hundreds of purposes from raincoats to automobile tires. E. The products that we call plastics nowadays do not exist in nature, however. They are manufactured by chemical processes; they are synthetic materials to put it in other words. They are made from such substances as wood or cotton, coal or petroleum, milk or soybean. F. The first modern plastic was called celluloid. It was developed first in England by Alexander Parkes and then in the United States by John Wesley Hyatt. The basic raw material was cellulose, a substance that comes from plants. It was combined with other chemicals to form a substance that could explode but was also viscous and thus could be molded. Even though celluloid burned easily, it was used for products such as combs and shirt collars in the last half of the nineteenth century. G. When a process was discovered for making celluloid into thin sheets, it became the basis of film. Photography and the movies could not have developed as rapidly as they did without celluloid. Eventually a less dangerous form of celluloid was created so that film become a great deal safer to handle and to store. H. The second modern plastic was a substance which has the trade name of Bakelite. It was discovered in 1908 by a Belgian Chemist, Dr. Leon Baekeland, who had combined several chemicals into a substance that set as hard as rock and could not be melted; it was also both light and strong. Within a few years, many commercial uses were found for this new substance. Cooking utensil handles, for example, were soon made of Bakelite; when radios came along their cabinets were also made out of Bakelite. 64. A partir del texto “Sex discrimination” podrás aplicar lo que has aprendido sobre los conectores y las relaciones que establecen, además de las estrategias que ya conoces. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 39 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II Sex discrimination how to spot it, what to do about it! Discrimination in the workplace on the basis of gender, has been illegal since 1964, but that’s not to say it’s a thing of the past. In fact, claims charging sex discrimination in promotion are actually on the increase. If you believe you’re a victim of sex discrimination, there are steps you can take to remedy the situation and laws designed to help you. The cornerstone of protection for women against discrimination at work is Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits employers from discriminating on the basis of gender, race, color, national origin, or religion. In addition, many states and cities have their own equal employment laws that offer additional rights. When is it discrimination? Salary inequity and pregnancy discrimination are among the most common forms of sex discrimination in the workplace , according to Helen Norton of the Women’s Legal Defense Fund. It’s also considered discrimination when women who are as qualified as men are treated less favorably in hiring, firing, work assignments, promotions, benefits, training and retirement policy. Pregnancy Pregnancy discrimination was made illegal by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978. The law requires companies with 15 or more employees to treat pregnancy as they would treat any other medical disability. So, if a company would routinely hold a job for a man recovering from a medical problem , they must hold the job for a woman recovering from childbirth, explains Ruth Jones, staff attorney for NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund in New York City. These days, companies are more aware of laws protecting pregnant employees. But instead of eliminating this type of discrimination, employers´ tactics are just becoming more subtle. For example, in a troubled economy, employers can disguise pregnancy discrimination as layoffs, downsizing, or corporate restructuring. What you can do If you believe you are a victim of sex discrimination at work and wish to remedy the situation, start by researching your company’s policies. For example, if you believe you were passed up for a promotion, new title, or raise because you are a woman, first find out whether you indeed qualify : Do you have the required level of education? Do you have enough job experience? If you’ve always been reviewed as excellent or above average, get copies of your work evaluations before you complain . This way, no one will have a chance to lose or alter your records. Legal actions If you do decide to pursue your case outside the company, the first step is to file a charge with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EOCC). The EEOC is responsible for conducting an investigation and, if it finds cause to believe discrimination has occurred, attempts to resolve the problem. Occasionally, the EEOC will litigate a claim for you, but most often they issue a notice giving you the right to sue your employer. If you feel you must sue, you’ll need an attorney familiar with the employment law. Legal fees are expensive, though you may get reimbursed if you win. 66. The heart first have to be baked to convert its starches to sugars. The resulting sweet juice (aguamiel) can be fermented and distilled. The practice of baking agave hearts is ancient in Mexico. Originally they were baked in stonelined underground pits heated by keeping a fire going in them for a couple of hours, much as for a New England clambake or a Hawaiian imu pit barbecue. But in pre-colombian times, agave was mostly baked for food. Nobody was making tequila from the aguamiel because the Aztecs were ignorant of distillation, though they did know about fermentation and sometimes fermented aguamiel. So did some Spanish colonist just take a look at the aguamiel´ wine one day and say, “Aha let’s distill it?” Apparently not . Village people in the tequila country use peculiar stills, quite unlike the European type in which the alcohol vapor condenses in a water-cooled copper tube. In these village stills, it condenses on the underside of the lid of the vaporization chamber itself. The lid is concave ; the vapor condenses on it because the top of the lid holds some cold water. The alcohol drips from the lid into a little cup hanging inside the chamber, and from time to time you remove the lid and harvest your mezcal. Sure, it’s nowhere near as efficient as a European copper still, but you don´t need any metal to make one; you can use pottery. This is a Southeast Asian design that seems to have come from the Philippines as an unplanned consequence of Spain’s 17th and 18th century trade with its Philippine and American colonies. An unknown Filipino immigrant evidently tasted aguamiel, thought of sugar cane juice and the native rums of his homeland, and bingo: Tequila, or at least its remote ancestor, was born. 70. Los antónimos son los conceptos que tienen significados opuestos, y se usan para establecer los rasgos opuestos o situaciones contradictorias dentro de un texto y de esta forma hacer más clara la información. Lee con atención el texto “The Respiratory System” y contesta lo que te pide a continuación. The Respiratory System How does oxygen reach our body cells? 1. Air that we breathe in consists of around 20 percent oxygen. This is the important gas that is needed by each cell in our body. 2. When we inhale , air passes into our mouth or nose and then into our trachea (windpipe). This is strengthened by rings of cartilage to stop it from collapsing. From here the air enters an alveolus. There are about 300 million alveoli, that give the lungs a huge surface area, to make gaseous exchange more efficient. The air then diffuses across into the bloodstream that is richly supplied to the lungs. Oxygen is then carried by red blood cells to where it’s needed in the body. Ventilation 3. To get the air into the lungs, air is brought in by inhalation. The waste product carbon dioxide is expelled from the body by exhalation. The process of ventilation is helped by the diaphragm and the intercostal muscles in the ribs. 4. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens. The intercostal muscles contract to raise the rib cage. This increases the volume of the chest, which results in a drop in air pressure. This causes air to rush into the lungs. To exhale, the diaphragm and intercostal muscles relax, springing the diaphragm up to decrease the volume of the chest and therefore expel air. Aerobic respiration 5. Once air is in the blood stream, it is delivered to the cells where it is needed. This is where aerobic respiration takes place. Aerobic respiration is the release of energy, using oxygen and glucose. Carbon dioxide is a waste product and has to be removed from the body by exhaling. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 43 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II 6. This reaction happens in all of our cells to provide energy for the following functions: * Metabolism - building up large molecules using small molecules * To allow muscles to contract * To keep the body at a constant temperature. * To transfer molecules against a concentration gradient (active transport). Anaerobic respiration 7. Sometimes, the amount of oxygen required in aerobic respiration is not available. This can happen during periods of intense activity. The amount of oxygen needed cannot be supplied by the heart and lungs . In this situation, cells can respire anaerobically. This is respiration without oxygen. The drawback is that glucose partially broken down and therefore less energy is released. The production of this reaction is lactic acid. 8. This builds up in the muscles and after the activity has finished, must be broken down to carbon dioxide and water by reacting it with oxygen. This is known as paying off the oxygen debt and is responsible for the heavy panting that occurs after exercise. 72. CUADERNO DE ACTIVIDADES DE APRENDIZAJE, CONSOLIDACIÓN Y REATROALIMENTACIÓN 66 LENGUA ADICIONAL AL ESPAÑOL II ANEXO 1 Seeking gorillas among guerrillas Want a real death-defying adventure? Try stalking the nearly endangered wildlife in the jungles of rebel-torn Rwanda. Kenya has its elephants, Zimbabwe has its white rhinos. But Rwanda has a rarer natural treasure: 320 mountain gorillas inhabiting the Parc National des Volcans, a 125-square-kilometer strip of jungle along the country’s northern border. Last February, 5000 rebels from the Rwandan Patriotic Front stormed the park from enclaves in Uganda. The park´s headquarters and the late Dian Fossey´s research center were looted: one of the five gorilla groups vanished in the fighting, and tourism that sustained the park has all but dissaperared. In March the rebels withdrew to their pre-February positions as part of a cease-fire. But the territory they abandoned, including most of the park, has been carved into ungoverned demilitarized zones; peace is precarious, as is the gorilla´s future. Last month a small group - four tourists and six rangers - arranged to visit the mountain gorillas accompanied by Jose Kalpers, field director of the International Gorilla Conservation Project. “At the peak in 1990, we saw 200 tourist a week here,” he told us. “Today we’re down to three or four.” At dawn on a cloudless morning, we drove north through a lush landscape of terraced banana, cassava and bean fields. Despite the cease-fire, the atmosphere was tense. The highway was lined with roadblocks, manned by unsmiling government recruits with Kalashnikov automatic rifles. At the tiny village of Basogo, we reached the southwestern edge of the Parc National des Volcans - the only area of the park that remains in government control. For an hour the rangers tracked the gorillas up 12,000 ft Mount Karisimbi. As we emerged from dense bamboo groves onto a sunlit meadow, ranger Nmathias Kanyamusoro gestured across a ravine. “They are in there”, he said. the forest exploded in a cacophony of shrieks. Suddenly, we saw her: a halfton big- bellied female gorilla sitting in a clearing, blithely ignoring us as she chomped on a bamboo shoot. Kalpers emitted a series of low, throaty grunts, to signal that we were not enemies. We froze before 30 apes of all ages lolling around the hillside. Playful infants somersaulted toward us, beating on their chests in a caricature of male agression. Umkome (Naughty One), the dominant silverback, lay on his back, snoring noisily. With their sloping heads, bridgeless black snouts and dense back fur, they were at once menacing and oddly beautiful. After 45 minutes, Umkome rose, grunted and ambled downhill, followed by all 29 members of his extended family. The gorillas´ tranquil habitat is the peril that surrounds them. Later that morning, we visited the park headquarters at Kinigi in the DMZ to asses the damage caused by the rebel advance. “We had a steady structure of guards and rangers patrolling the forests, but now they’ve fled”, said chief warden Shyirambere Canisius. So far, there has been only one war-related gorilla death: Mrithi, a dominant silverback, who surprised soldiers marching through the forest. But the loss of even one ape can have devastating impact on the rest of the group. Unless a lasting peace comes to Rwanda, the country’s priceless resource is in danger of vanishing forever.
