Vera crawls over a lifetime collection of owls (and a frog) that were purchased as a group at a humongous flea market in Doctores. The wife of the vendor had obvious disdain for her husband’s foolish hobby, and detested lugging them each Sunday to display, only to never find a buyer. MCM staff spotted them from the next booth and inquired about the unlikely treasure. The collector gleamed with pride as we handed him his cash. CyZ: Masturbarme, me encanta. PyA: ¿Cuál es tu profesión? CyZ: Los tacones y… no sé, masturbarse también. C: Estudio para intérprete-traductor. Z: Soy cantante y socialité. PyA: ¿Cuál es tu prenda favorita? PyA: ¿Qué signo eres? PyA: ¿Y de ser mujer? C: Prendedores, calzones. We’ve been sitting around trying to remember the first time we met, and Chema seems to remember perfectly. He says he even remembers what he was wearing that night, more than five years ago, and what he was wearing to all the parties he has been to. “A horrible striped thing I took out of my mother’s closet, a pair of jeans and sneakers.” PyA: ¿Quién es tu modelo masculino a seguir? PyA: Tu modelo a seguir femenino… Z: Madonna y yo. No sabía. PyA: ¿Top o bottom? CyZ: ¡Ay Caramba! PyA: ¿Cuándo empezaste a tener relaciones sexuales? PyA: ¿Con cuántos has estado? CH & Z: I couldn’t live without money. I would die. PV & AA: What do you do for a living? CH: I’m a rich kid, but I could do all kinds of stuff. Chema could depend on Zemmoa, because she´s free from her parents now. I lead a double life, it’s terrible. I used to hide my clothes in my house, but they would always find them. Zemmoa is a gypsy, she moves from ones friend’s house to another´s carrying her wardrobe. She has to leave early, transform, go party, go back to normal and come back home. I do it all in secret and I have no choice but to lie. PV & AA: Who is your male role model? CH: I really don’t have one. If I had one, things would be different. It could have been my dad, he’s an incredible person, honest. If you meet him at his work, he’s incredible; if you meet him in a party he’s really fun, and he plays the piano very well. PV & AA: Do you play a musical instrument? CH: I play the piano. PyA: ¿Cuál es tu porra? PV & AA: You have a new musical project. How is it going along? CyZ: “¡Hombre, mujer o quimera, no importa mientras me quiera!” Z: I wanna be famous, I don’t want to be a singer. I wanna be in the spotlight, I want paparazzis always following me, flashes… ¡Tootles! PV & AA: And your female role model? Z: Madonna and myself. ENGLISH PV & AA: What’s your favorite position in bed? PAOLA VILORIA AND ALBERTO ARANGO: How old are you? Z: I don’t know how to describe it, I like to be seen from the front, like someone penetrating my vagina. CHEMA: 19. ZEMMOA: How old do I look? PV & AA: The missionary position? Z: (Laughs.) That’s what they call it? I didn’t know. PV & AA: What sign are you? PV & AA: Top or bottom? CH & Z: I’m a Libra. PV & AA: You told us earlier that you went to church. Any apparent reason? PV & AA: What is your favorite color? CH & Z: I couldn’t say what my favorite color is; depending on how I feel, I choose the color I wear. I have no favorite color. PV & AA: What is your profession? CH: I study simultaneous translation. Z: I’m a singer and a socialite. PV & AA: Who is your best friend? CH & Z: I couldn´t say because the others would get upset… I´m very friendly. Whoever loves me the most is my best friend. The most important thing in the world for me is friendship. Trust, security, warmth. I am a person who loves, I have a giant ego. I love a lot but I expect to be loved in return, and what I hate the most is to write with a pencil. I hate it! PV & AA: Do you have a plan? Z: My plan is to be loved more than Jesus himself and to be adored for ever and ever more, amen. That would make me very happy. CH: I have many difficulties in my life; I’m not a believer but lately, I have said: “God, if you exist, help me a bit.” My parents are an obstacle; Zemmoa is reaching higher and higher, and the higher she gets, the more I hurt my parents. The truth is that I went to church today to ask forgiveness for being and for hurting. Also, today is Good Friday. PV & AA: There are some published pictures of you with Paris Hilton. Are you friends? Z: We´re close! I went to Paris´ party without being invited, but Zemmoa is all-mighty. I went to the salon, had a modern hairdo, gloves, and jewels on top, my jewels. The moment I got there, I saw Lorena Herrera and knew I had to get in. Paris Hilton arrived later, and when she entered, they didn’t make a fuss about the invitations because the party was empty. Once I got in, I told her something to grab her attention and she said: “Oh my gosh, you’re gorgeous!” and took me up to the VIP area. I didn’t speak to her again but I stayed there all night. PV & AA: But you said you love her! PV & AA: Do you really want to be a woman? CH: I wouldn’t want to be a woman because I´m OK with my body but I would like to give birth to my own children and have a straight and steady husband. PV & AA: How do Chema and Zemmoa get along? CH & Z: They get along just fine, they’re very close and they know each others secrets. PV & AA: What are people’s reactions when they see you, especially at night? Z: Some fall in love, some have a stroke. PV & AA: What do you think about women’s conditions in Muslim countries? CH & Z: It sucks… I don´t understand why they don´t get organized, get together and rebel! Z: My shoes are size 11...11! I have great difficulties getting shoes. I have a custom-made pair of shoes that cost me 1,700 pesos and since it’s the only pair I’ve got, I don’t have any choice but to paint them every color, but they fit me, so it’s perfect! They fit perfectly, they don’t hurt, I can bear them, I dominate them. I do summersaults with high heels. Anyway, so I have a 1,700 pesos shoes, but I have another pair, because buying 1,700 pesos shoes is not so great, unless you buy them on Fifth Avenue. They’re very expensive. So, I found a shoemaker who would make me a pair for 500 pesos. Incredible! The problem is that they are not very well made, women’s shoes have an arch and guys’ shoes are flat. He put a guys sole with high heels and all the weight goes to my toes and heel! I have worn them twice and the first time my feet were bleeding. The first pair is so worn-down and painted so many times, they look like alligator shoes; we joke and say they are papier mache shoes: —“Oh, you´re wearing your maches tonight?”, —“Of course!” Paris Hilton also has problems because of her big feet, tough shit. I think she also has her shoes custom-made. Besides that, I also have an eye problem. I have crossed-eyes, very much so; when I’m drunk I can’t see anymore, and Paris Hilton is also like that, and I love it. We both don’t really do much, but we’re rock stars because we’re pretty and hot. That’s why I like Paris. Ah! The fact that I’m talking a lot about Paris Hilton doesn’t mean that I’m a fan of hers; in fact she’s quite stupid, really. PV & AA: What do you dislike the most in the opposite sex? C: Usually, women believe in the macho business without noticing they are really in control; it’s an eternal fight for power. I’m very jealous. They don’t understand that they’re fighting for something they shouldn’t. I would love to be a girl. I bet that if I were a girl, Napoleon (Habeica) would already have taken pictures of me naked. PV & AA: What do you envy about Kate Moss? CH & Z: I don’t envy her. It’s ugly what I am about to say, but I’d only envy her if she were my friend. Logically, if we were friends, we’d be in the same circle or whatever you call it and it would be like: Why her and not me? PV & AA: What do you like the best about being a man? CH & Z: ¡Ay caramba! (Everybody laughs.) PV & AA: When did you start having sex? CH & Z: I sucked my first dick at 11, in elementary school. At 15 or 16, I started having sex. PV & AA: How many people have you been with? CH: Zemmoa likes to seduce, she even likes to be a whore because she likes to be seen, to be in the spotlight. But when it comes down to romance, she doesn´t go to bed with just anybody. PV & AA: What types do you like? Z: I like the impossible ones: I like straights. If I know someone is queer, then I’m not so attracted anymore, but I also like girls. Once, I dreamt about the perfect vagina. I never saw her face, but I caressed her thighs and I fucked her. Then, I got mixed up and didn’t know if that girl was me. PV & AA: What´s your favorite music? Z: Whatever makes me dance. My life is a song; If I’m sad, I put Gloria Trevi on; if I feel betrayed, I listen to “Mentiras” (Lies) by Daniela Romo. I always have a song that fits perfectly with the moment. PV & AA: What can you tell us about drugs? CH: Masturbation, I love it. PV & AA: And of being a woman? Z: High heels and… I don´t know, masturbation too. CH & Z: I won’t tell you I haven´t had fun when I´ve taken coke but I really don’t like it very much. I prefer ecstasy because it goes with my mood: if you want to feel love, take a Love Pill, if you want fashion, take a Versace. PV & AA: Which is your favorite garment? PV & AA: What is your motto? CH: Pins, panties. I really only dress as a man because I have to. Before, I thought of having a sex change, but I love myself! I love myself! I have the breastless woman look. I think I can project the same and even more. If I were operated, it would be decadent. PV & AA: What couldn’t you live without? CH & Z: “Man, woman or fantasy, does not matter as long as he loves me!” PV & AA: Where can we find you? Z: Masturbate and you will see me in your orgasm, or at myspace.com/zemmoa. Tootles! Historical Center of Mexico City. Francis Alÿs spent the last 20 years gregariously exploring, silently observing and creatively documenting routines, habits, and the idiosyncrasy of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. Now, he has brought these findings and experiences to the public in an extremely well-produced multi-media exhibit that spans across several rooms, hallways, stairwells and floors of the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso. A personal favorite of the show was “If You Are A Typical Spectator, What You Are Really Doing Is Waiting For The Accident To Happen”, a 10-minute documentary of the “life” of an empty plastic bottle on a windy afternoon in Zócalo Plaza. We found ourselves magnetically drawn into a seemingly unimportant happening, unable to move because we wanted to know what “happened” to the bottle. The unexpected ending proved to be worthwhile. The video still shown above taken from the piece entitled “Zócalo” is described by Alÿs in the exhibit’s catalogue. “The filming begins at dawn with the flag raising ceremony and ends at dusk with the descending of the flag. The camera follows the progression of the shadow of the flagpole, and the subsequent displacement of the people following the shadow as they are seeking refuge from the sun on the open plaza. The camera lens describes a lateral movement of 3 degrees per hour during a total period of 12 hours.” Hasta principios de junio en Justo Sierra 16, Centro Histórico. At times we take it for granted. It’s omnipresent role in nature, mathematics, and everyday life is perhaps the very reason it is sometimes forgotten. This month’s spread, however, refutes this terrible trend, as it proves to us that in no other facet of life is symmetry as important as when getting INSANELY RIPPED. ■ Whether you’re up bright and early on a beautiful day with nothing to do, or you have a massive hangover but don’t want to be inside your claustrophobic apartment, the Turibus excursion is something new to try. Between 1949 and 1961, the American Beat writers William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac ventured into Mexican territory. The first killed his wife in Colonia Roma and subsequently was born as a writer, while the other hung around with low life chilango creatures he considered sacred. Be that as it may, Mexico City was a significant influence in the life and work of two of the key writers of the Sixties counterculture movement. Mexico City seemed light, relaxed and tolerant, mainly because he could get morphine simply by using doctors' prescriptions and would buy large amounts in drugstores. The future writer was happy; with a small bribe for the doctor, he would get one or two boxes full of prescribed drugs that would calm his cravings for weeks. Burroughs also registered at Mexico City College (now Universidad de las Américas) to study Anthropology, partly because he was interested in the field and partly because by doing so, he received a grant from the U.S. government. Even though Burroughs was not on good terms with his country’s culture, and was one of its fiercest critics throughout his lifetime, in Mexico he kept company with many Americans (not hypocritical ones) with whom he frequented such places as the Bounty Bar, located at Monterrey and Chihuahua Streets, the Ku Ku Restaurant on Coahuila and Insurgentes and the Hollywood Steak House on Insurgentes and Tehuacan, all of which no longer exist. On the other hand, he never visited the hip places such as Catacumbas, Cirós, El Burro, La Rata Muerta or The Waikiki where people danced the rumba, cha cha cha, and mambo until dawn, since he was not interested in them at all. He preferred getting drunk and stoned with his gringo friends. For reasons that are not very clear, Burroughs had lived with Joan for five years and had a child with her, although he was gay, a fact that did not cause him any trouble, not even when he was in his teens, according to him. In Mexico, at the Bounty Bar, he met an awkward 21 year-old American named Lewis Marker, with whom he fell in love and seduced. Burroughs, who was 37 at the time, did not arouse any love in Marker, who only went to bed with him because he considered Burroughs intelligent and interesting, but not attractive. In contrast, Burroughs was completely infatuated with the young man. Conscious of her husband’s homosexual flings, Joan did not reproach him; even before they lived together in New York, she had known about his inclinations. Joan was not the typical jealous, domestic, middle-class American woman. Ten years younger than Burroughs, she had studied art in New York and was educated and intelligent, but also self-destructive and somewhat promiscuous. Clear signs of the disease poliomyelitis, added to her regular consumption of amphetamines and alcohol, had deformed her appearance. In July 1951, having tired of Mexico for many reasons, Burroughs was planning to travel to South America –Panama, Ecuador and Peru– in order to find a better place to live and to obtain a powerful psychoactive plant –yagé– which he wanted to experiment with. Instead of traveling with Joan, he invited Marker, who was not that eager to go. Burroughs persuaded him by offering to pay all the expenses in return for having sex with him at least once a day. Marker accepted. The trip was a fiasco: Burroughs never found a better place than Mexico, nor the yagé, and his relationship with the evasive Marker was a disaster, since the young man only occasionally and under duress would agree to have sex with him. When he returned to Mexico at the beginning of September, Burroughs was depressed and frustrated. WILLIAM TELL WAS TO BLAME On Thursday, September 6, 1951, Burroughs needed some cash and thought of selling his gun. John Healy, the owner of the Bounty Bar, told him of an American who was interested in buying it, and said that he would wait for him at his apartment at Monterrey #122, right above the bar, at six o’clock. That morning, while Burroughs was walking alone on Orizaba Street, he heard the sound that Mexican street knife-sharpeners make with their plastic panpipes. Burroughs was carrying a knife he had bought in Ecuador and he went toward the sharpener. When the sound penetrated his ears, he felt as though the sky had fallen on him, that an extreme desolation had gripped him, and "And as I walked down the street towards his car a felling of loss and sadness that I had weighed on me all day so I could hardly breath intensified to such an extent that I found tears streaming down my face." A bad omen. A little before four o’clock in the afternoon, Burroughs and Joan left their children with their neighbors at Privada de Orizaba #210, walked seven blocks through Colonia Roma and arrived at Monterrey #122, the Gordehuela Building (which still exists today), entered, went upstairs and knocked on the door of apartment #10. When they went in, they saw John Healy, Marker –Burroughs's companion ENGLISH WILLIAM BURROUGHS ARRIVES IN MEXICO, FLEEING AMERICAN LAW. 1949. William S. Burroughs lived in New Orleans with his wife Joan Vollmer, her daughter Julie, and their son, Billy. Burroughs was not writing seriously yet; his main interest was the use of mind-altering drugs, especially opiates. Joan liked benzedrine best, bennies and alcohol, which she took in abundance. A beautiful couple. They lived off a small allowance from Burroughs’s parents. One day in 1949, the police caught Burroughs with a car full of drugs. They turned him in and he was released on bail, but while awaiting trial, his attorney suggested he leave the country. Burroughs decided to escape to Mexico together with his wife and children, his luggage full of drugs and dreams of the future. A short time after arriving in Mexico City, the Burroughs family rented an apartment in Colonia Roma, at Cerrada de Medellín #35 (now called José Alvarado). Burroughs was fascinated with the southern neighbor. Bill and Joan observed that the living room was full of empty gin, rum and soda pop bottles, but that everyone was sober. As it turned out, a party had taken place the previous evening with the American grantees of Mexico City College who had just received their monthly stipend and had spent the night getting drunk at the apartment. Joan and Burroughs served themselves a gin with lemonade and Healy left to attend to another matter. They continued drinking. Two and a half hours later –which means that neither Burroughs nor Joan were roaring drunk– the potential buyer had not arrived. Burroughs took out his Star 380 pistol, put it on the table and said he wanted to go live somewhere in South America and survive by hunting animals. Joan told him he would never dare shoot at anybody. Burroughs, who was an easy prey to female provocation, told her that in order to prove her wrong she should be kind enough to get up and put a glass half full of gin and lemonade on her head in order to perform their renowned William Tell act (it seems this was not the first time they had done it). Joan got up instantly, put the glass on top of her head and closing her eyes pronounced her last words: “I do not dare look, I cannot stand to see blood”. Burroughs got up as well, stood three meters away from her, extended his arm and shot. Joan fell to the floor like a punching bag detached from its hook. The bewildered spectators thought it was joke. Moments later, as they saw the red stream flowing on the floor and heard the strange noises coming out of Joan’s half-open mouth, they finally understood what had happened. Marker ran out of the apartment to look for the medical student who lived next door, and Burroughs knelt next to Joan’s body and yelled: "Speak to me! Speak to me!" Woods left Burroughs screaming and went to look for the concierge, who called an ambulance, the police and Burroughs's attorney, Bernabé Jurado. The ambulance arrived at the apartment at 7:30 p.m. and took the body of dying Joan; Burroughs accompanied her to the Red Cross at Durango and Sonora Streets. Joan died an hour later. When Burroughs was told, he cried, heartbroken, pulling his hair in impotence. His famous, and skillful gangster-lawyer, Bernabé Jurado, immediately reached him at the hospital together with the police, who took Burroughs first to the Eighth District (Cuauhtémoc Avenue at Obrero Mundial) and later to Lecumberri Prison, known as the Black Palace. In his first declaration to the police, Burroughs was faithful to the actual events: he and Joan had decided to play William Tell, and instead of hitting the glass, the bullet pierced Joan’s temple. It was an accident, he affirmed. But when Bernabé Jurado met Burroughs later on, he asked him to change his declaration and say that his pistol went off by mistake when it fell on the floor, and stop mentioning the William Tell act. Burroughs obeyed. Jurado then started to pull some strings and bribed the investigators with Mortimer Burroughs’s money –William’s brother who immediately came to Mexico–. Jurado told Burroughs exactly what to do and say and after 13 days the famous writer left jail on bail. Burroughs blessed the corrupt Mexican courts. All the police sections of the newspapers back then repeated the story of William Tell, publishing lies, sensationalism and false declarations. Burroughs’s elder brother Mortimer buried Joan at the American Cemetery in Tacuba and the children, who had stayed several days at Orizaba #210 with the terrified neighbors, who did not know what to do with them, returned to the United States to live with their grandparents. Burroughs’s stay in Lecumberri Prison was brief and not terrible at all. The inmates treated him well and even gave him blankets so he would not be cold at night. Once freed on bail, Burroughs was obliged to stay in Mexico until his case was closed. But since the notoriously incompetent Mexican authorities did not solve anything after a year and three months, Burroughs easily foiled them and escaped illegally from Mexico, never to return. He went to South America again, where he finally tried yagé, which revealed, according to him, great truths. Later, he traveled to Tangier, Morocco, where he lived for six years, and after experiencing a sort of hell due to his opiate addiction, he wrote the book that would make him famous: Naked Lunch. After a 25-year silence, Burroughs decided to talk about Joan’s death. In 1985, he wrote that on that fateful afternoon in 1951, an evil spirit possessed him and ordered him to kill Joan. From then on, the only way he could resist it was by writing. Becoming a writer was, according to him, the only safe-conduct that allowed him, since then, to neutralize and calm the evil force that killed his wife. JACK KEROUAC IN THE HOT LAND OF DESERT RATS AND TEQUILA. When Burroughs had just arrived in Mexico City, in September 1949 he sent a letter to a friend eight years his junior, telling him of the marvels of the place: "Mexico is very cheap, there are fabulous brothels and restaurants. Cockfights, bullfights, all kinds of entertainments; you must visit me". Seduced by such praise, a few months later, in June 1950, Jack Kerouac, his hero-friend Neal Cassady and Frank Jeffries, another friend, took off in Neal’s 1937 Ford and drove straight from Denver, Colorado to Laredo, Texas. They crossed the MexicanAmerican border and when they arrived in Gregoria, Tamaulipas, they immediately smoked some marihuana and went into a joint where they went on to spend an awesome night with northern whores, gallons of alcohol and mambo dancing. The next day, Kerouac and friends, with Neal at the steering wheel, entered Mexico City, immediately visiting Burroughs at his house in Colonia Roma. Neal and Frank soon went back to the States and Jack was left alone with Burroughs, who took him out to bars and restaurants in Colonia Roma and occasionally partook in smoking pot with him –Jack preferred alcohol and cannabis to opiates. One day they both went to the bullfights at Plaza Mexico, and while Burroughs enjoyed the “bloody show”, Jack was horrified. Besides that, Kerouac, unlike Burroughs, frequented prostitutes at Órgano Street in Peralvillo, the city's official red light district. Three months later, Kerouac went back to New York. IN LOVE WITH A MEXICAN JUNKIE Four years later, in 1955, Kerouac, still an unknown writer, went to Mexico City once more and arrived at the tiny building at Orizaba #210 in Colonia Roma, Burroughs’s last address. There lived an American junkie friend of theirs by the name of Bill Garver; all day, he would inject into his veins any opium derivative he could find. In that place, Jack wrote one of his most recognized books of poetry, México City Blues. He also met a drugfriend of Garver’s, a 25-year-old morphine addicted prostitute by the William Burroughs en la prisión del palacio de Lecumberri. Ciudad de México, 1951. William Burroughs in Lecumberri’s Palace prision. Mexico City, 1951. name of Esperanza Villanueva, with whom he fell in love and who served as the model for his only completely Mexican Beat novel, Tristessa. For Kerouac, who considered himself a Buddhist at the time, EsperanzaTristessa, a faithful believer in the Virgin of Guadalupe, who never missed the Sunday mass, was a kind of saint who augmented her religious aura by prostituting and drugging herself. With her, he got to know Mexico City’s lowlife, Garibaldi and the outskirts of downtown. He ate greasy tidbits from street carts at late hours, saw hotels swarming with prostitutes and drug addicts, met scumbags who robbed him of his poetry notebooks and humiliated him, and did not defend himself or respond at all (whereas Burroughs would have scared them with bullets). Esperanza did not return the affection that Jack felt for her. She preferred getting stoned to falling in love, and rejected the gringo poet’s advances. He was probably more interested in her as a fascinating subject for his novel than as a desirable mate; nonetheless, he continued to help Garver and Esperanza get drugs from Chinese laundries and corrupt drugstores. Once, when they had no drugs, Esperanza started raging, breaking, slamming and throwing all types of things onto the floor in Garver’s apartment, then she threw herself on the floor and started shaking, kicking and shouting outrageously. She accused Jack of being a repulsive drug addict and threw a bottle in his face. Another time when Jack again declared his love to her in a taxi, Esperanza turned away indifferently and did not answer. When they arrived at Garver’s house, he told Jack: "If you put Grace Kelly on one chair and dirty morphine on the other, my dear Jack, I would choose the morphine." Esperanza, who was listening, said: “I also do not want love”. Kerouac understood the message and did not see her again. A year later, in October 1956, while Jack was writing the last part of Tristessa, two of the most important and recognized Beat poets, Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso, came to visit him, accompanied by Peter Orlowsky, Ginsberg’s lover. Kerouac took them to the Pyramids of Teotihuacán and when they reached the top of the Sun Pyramid, they smoked a joint in order to connect with the mystic energy of the site. On another occasion, they went to the Bombay club (which still exists) in Garibaldi, "the slum's slummiest hole agitating mud from our lips." They left the place and went to a street corner full of prostitutes "standing ranked against pockholed walls full of bedbugs and cockroaches." Peter and Jack decided to take a whore to bed, Ginsberg waited outside and Corso, disgusted, went home. Kerouac chose a girl of 14 and Orlowsky a fat middle-aged woman. The minor turned out to be "so small you can't find her for at least a minute of probing." Peter finished with the fat lady, who apart from pleasure gave him gonorrhea, which he cured with penicillin. The last thing they did before returning to the States was to go up to the top of the bell tower of the Metropolitan Cathedral and sound the bells as if “to call the Mexican people to a poetic insurrection”. Nobody paid any attention. Jack Kerouac visited Mexico twice again. Once in 1957, just when the great earthquake brought the Angel of Independence to the ground. He was in his hotel at the moment and wrote: "The hotel room is rocking like a ship and I’m under the bed to protect myself against falling ceilings. The entire apartment building across the street from the post office on Obregón Street is falling and killing everybody".The truth is that the earthquake only killed 70 people. The last time Kerouac visited Mexico, now as an important and famous writer, was in June 1961; and as on his first visit, eleven years earlier, he arrived at the apartment on Cerrada de Medellín 35, closing the circle of his travels to the southern country. The only thing that happened to him on that trip, apart from writing a few texts, was that several young Mexicans from Colonia Roma, who clearly did not know he was a writer, invited him for a few drinks at their house, then stole his razor blade, his Buddhist rosary, his flashlight, his bag, and when they were about to take his overcoat, Jack implored them to leave it since it was a present from his mother. The guys just laughed and took it all. Jack never returned to “the hot land of desert rats and tequila”, as he called Mexico. He died of alcohol congestion eight years later. He was 47 years old and already an icon of the counterculture youth of the Sixties. Aside from the expected superstitious tchotchke (spirit cleansing soaps, magical amulets, and incense), you can also take home a dyed purple, hot pink or electric blue baby chick (1 USD), a baby alligator (200 USD), or a Spider Monkey (2000 USD), among several other endangered, rare, or run-of-the-mill species. This “living” section of the market is not for those with a strong sense of smell (it’s nearly unbearable), or conscience for that matter, but it is a unique experience nonetheless. The rest of the market is made up of hundreds of haggle-free booths (prices are usually as stated) that sell a little bit of everything from healing herbs, love potions, and books on the occult, to gladiator costumes, skeleton candles, and by far the gaudiest fountains you’ve ever seen. If a trinket is not what you’re after, there are spiritual services that you can test out as well, including palm reading, energy purification, and all sorts of healing and good luck, provided by a real life Indian Doctor named Tonatiuh. 1. Ocho Why spend $3 at the drugstore on lipstick when you can spend 3 hours and $8 making your own?! That’s exactly what we said when we found a recipe for homemade lipstick in an old formula book published in Mexico in 1938. We ended up with something a bit weird but wearable, and while it wasn’t the perfect experiment, we think that with a few more tries we could have knocked Cover Girl off the radar. Here’s the (rough) process. 1. Gather your ingredients. This is the hard part, as the items are from a book published almost 70 years ago. We’re in a place where the obsolete can be easier to find than the new and improved high tech, so we found ours in an old school pharmacy. You will need all-natural, chemical-free ingredients including beeswax, pigment powder (colors from black to blood red exist), and plain cold crème such as original Nivea. 2. Heat up a deep pan or small pot of water, and place a heavy shotlike glass in the center. This indirect heating technique is called “Baño María”. Put about 1/2” of wax in the glass and cover the pot/pan. In about 3 minutes the wax should be melted to a liquid. 3. Add about 3 tablespoons of cream to the wax and stir vigorously. Cover and heat again until wax and cream are combined. 4. Sift in at least 1 tablespoon of pigment powder into the mixture. The amount you use will determine whether you make a sheer gloss or a strong color. Mix well. 5. Remove from heat, pour into container that you wish to store it in, and allow to cool until firm all the way through. 2. 3. 4. 5.
