It is a project which promotes and endorses a national chain of value focusing its efforts on the development of textiles with greater and better performance in terms of protection and comfort. It is a true international reference due to the important influence it has on the market and sectors of application, and also due to its strong innovative nature. INFINITEX has become a fundamental component in the growth and internationalisation strategies of the companies of the Consortium of participants. Now that the project has been running for twenty-eight months the first prototypes and technological demonstrators have begun to surface, which some of our customers are already trying, with the potential users are even becoming involved in this process. The Technical Director of INFINITEX, Juan Manuel Jurado, believes that “the feedback from our customers is fundamental to guide the lines of research on which we are working. During the meeting held at the Technical Committee the important level of progress achieved was demonstrated. Now we must focus – added Jurado – on adjusting the design to bring it into line with the needs of the current market.” The INFINITEX project is, consequently, an ambitious investment in R+D+I. Workwear with new functionalities, improved performance and different applications to satisfy the present and future needs of our customers. This is the objective, from which it is hoped that important results will be gained in the next few months. 1 NEWSLETTER 35 • JULY 2012 JULIO THE COMPANY / EMPRESA STEP Project, Simplification, Transformation, Efficiency of Processes. How we want to be as a company from 2015 THE STEP PROJECT IS A REALITY After two years of preparation with the participation of many people and the direct involvement of the General Management, we are satisfied to be able to announce the formal launch of the principal simplification initiative of the ITURRI Group: the STEP project. WHAT IS THE STEP PROJECT? It is a very important project transforming the operations of the Group. Its objective: to increase the satisfaction and loyalty of our customers; improve on quality, on efficiency in order to be more competitive, on delivery deadlines, reducing costs and also errors. This involves taking action on our way of doing things (processes and collaboration), people in the team and the systems which provide support. WHY IS THE STEP PROJECT IMPORTANT? Our 2015 strategy establishes four goals for the Group which are fundamental for the stability of the company in the medium and long-term: • Grow abroad • Offer solutions which resolve problems for customers • Simplify the company • Develop the team These goals, which represent an opportunity, have become demands for changes in the environment. WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO CHANGE? The ITURRI Group’s business has evolved very quickly over the past few years. The external circumstances have changed due to globalisation, competition, the recession and we have also changed: we have increased in number, we are present in more countries, we make a larger variety of different product and we have more customers. WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT? We have two critical objectives in the Group which are the fundamental objectives of STEP: 2 Proyecto STEP, Simplificación, Transformación, Eficiencia de Procesos. The improvement to our customers’ satisfaction, which will help us to maintain what we have, for them to recommend us to new customers and to maintain an excellent reputation. To improve customer satisfaction it is crucial that we fulfil our commitments and reduce the number of errors, that we increase our thoroughness, controls and internal stringency. We must adapt our way of working to the current needs thus improving the fulfilment of commitments, anticipating possible problems, carrying out a proactive monitoring and practising an exhaustive control of quality. 2 The improvement to efficiency is crucial for maintaining our financial independence. To improve efficiency, we need to find a way to do more with less. With STEP we will establish solid foundations on which we can grow and evolve. Para conseguir estos objetivos vamos a: WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO TO ACHIEVE THESE OBJECTIVES? • Repensar entre todos la forma de hacer las cosas • Definir una forma común de hacer lo mismo en toda la empresa • Establecer criterios • Definir quién hace qué • Desarrollar sistemas que faciliten los procesos y proporcionen información veraz y completa • Formar a todas las personas sobre esa nueva forma de trabajar • Actuar sobre procesos, personas y sistemas To achieve these objectives we are going to: •Everyone is going to rethink the way we do things •Define a common way of doing the same throughout the company •Establish criteria •Define who does what •Develop systems which facilitate processes and provide true and complete information •Train everyone on this new way of working •Act on processes, people and systems ¿CUÁL ES EL ALCANCE? WHAT IS THE SCOPE? El alcance está estructurado en 5 grandes bloques: The scope has been defined in accordance with the business priorities and the customer satisfaction objectives and deals with building solid foundations for the basic processes upon which to base development. 3 THE COMPANY / EMPRESA NEWSLETTER 35 • JULY 2011 JULIO WHAT IS THE PLAN? The plan is to carry out a global design for the whole Group, with a pilot in Spain which will then be deployed to all countries. The date for the implementation of the project in Spain is January 2013 and afterwards the subsequent deployments will be carried out in Brazil, Germany, Poland and the rest of the countries. During the project’s implementation period the definition and design, development, implementation, training, etc., phases will be addressed. WHAT IS THE TEAM? The project team comprises the whole of the ITURRI Group and is organised in the same way as the scope. There is an owner for each block of processes, supported by someone from Organisation and Systems and a key user for each process within the block. In turn these key users shall create a virtual team for each process in which there will be a representative for each department. In this way we are talking about a team formed by the whole ITURRI Group, where each person will be an active part of the project. At some point in the project someone will contact them to participate through ideas, requirements, questions, validation of the design, training or any other contribution. No one should think that the company is going to change without them. MONITORING OF THE PROJECT For the monitoring of the project and its fulfilment there are 3 committees which will meet as follows: • General Management: monthly • Directors of participating departments: monthly • All of the process owners: weekly HOW ARE WE GOING TO PARTICIPATE? We are all going to participate. The people directly involved in the work teams shall be required, to a greater or lesser extent, to participate in meetings with the consultants, to undertake work and make decisions. They will be coordinated by the corresponding Organisation and Systems person. Their collaboration in the contribution of objectives in crucial. There are many ways to participate in the project other than undertaking 4 Durante el período de implantación del proyecto se abordarán las fases de definición y diseño, desarrollo, implantación, formación… the tasks that are assigned to us in a quality and timely manner: ¿CUÁL ES EL EQUIPO? • Enable others to undertake work on the project at the same time as their day-to-day work: understand, help El equipo de proyecto comprende a todo el Grupo ITURRI y está organizado igual que el alcance. •Share ideas, experiences, questions •Help everyone to feel like it is their project: listen, question, communicate, explain, dispel fears GOALS AND OPPORTUNITIES The project is not going to be simple. There are many processes for several countries in a short time, and many things to be changed. The project will require a great deal of effort and time. Since we have to continue in the meantime with sales and deliveries, this will, without a doubt, cause tension and disputes. It will also be necessary to change many habits, stop doing things that we have been doing for a long time in order to consider new things and learn a great deal. But it will also offer many opportunities for everyone: Opportunities to learn, to be better professionals, to add greater value, to obtain better results, to suffer less, for there to be more joy, to achieve a better company. Our principal objective is customer satisfaction. This is what motivates us to adapt our way of working to the current needs in the best way possible. WHY IS IT GOING TO GO WELL? WHY IS IT GOING TO BE A SUCCESS? Despite the fact that it will not be easy, we all have the right ingredients to ensure the project goes well: good preparation, a good plan, the commitment of all the coordinators and the whole work team, a good partner and good technological solutions. The fulfilment of the objectives linked to the STEP project is the responsibility of each of us. No one can do this alone. With our abilities and our values, making the project a success is a task to be carried out by everyone and for everyone. HOW CAN I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT STEP? ¿CÓMO PUEDO CONOCER MÁS DE STEP? However, work accidents are still too common, perhaps because the concept that we have of safety is still too fragile. We often hear the expression “prevention of risks in the workplace” in the media, seminars, forums and companies which adopt and implement a risk prevention management To achieve a sufficiently safe work environment at any company, we should focus primarily on the individual, on their behaviour. This is crucial, especially if we want to advance in the cultural sense of awareness of work health and safety issues. SAFETY AT WORK SAFETY AT HOME SEGURIDAD EN EL TRABAJO SEGURIDAD EN CASA - The conductive nature of the workplace will be taken into account in the choice of wiring (possible presence of very conductive surfaces, such as water or damp). - The use of electrical devices such as radios, electric razors or hairdryers, radios, etc., in the bath is more likely to lead to accidents. Before using these devices, please dry your hands thoroughly. - Periodical tests of the wiring shall be carried out. Specifically a check, at least annually, of the ground at the time in which the terrain is driest. This test must always be carried out by technically competent staff. - Maintain the wiring in your house in perfect condition, carrying out periodical checks to ensure this. - Workers must not overload sockets using adaptors or power strips in an abusive way. When unplugging equipment they must not pull on the cable. - Do not overload electrical sockets. Always check that they are in good condition. Have an authorised electrician periodically check (at least once a year) the ground network at home. When switching off devices, pull on the plug not the cord or wire. - No sobrecargue enchufes eléctricos. - Corridors, stairways and exits must always remain free from obstacles. Objects which block the way cannot be stored in these places. Anti-slip strips will be placed on the stairs to improve grip and reduce the risk of falling. - Place anti-slip rubber strips or surfaces and hand grips in the bath tub and/or shower in order to avoid slipping or falling. - A competent technician shall periodically check any gas installations in the workplace. - Avoid leaks in barrels, pipes, stopcocks, hosepipes and devices which hold gas. If you notice the presence of gas, turn off the supply and ventilate the area. Call the specialised service. Turn off the gas stopcock when you have finished using it and always do so at night or when leaving the house. Always have emergency telephone numbers in a visible place. - Stairways should always remain clear and free from obstacles. Keep exits free from obstacles. After analysing and comparing these two situations and checking their similarities, it seems that there is not a great difference between the concept of safety in or outside work. For this reason, we should ask ourselves if it wouldn’t be better to consider safety as a way of life, as a fundamental value in all the facets of the life of an individual. Only in this way can we perhaps achieve safe behaviour regardless of the environment in which we are in. Habits whose result would be the reduction of accidents in and out of work. 9 HEALTH AND SAFETY / SEGURIDAD Y SALUD NEWSLETTER 35 • JULY 2012 JULIO Better health, greater efficiency at work HUMAN RESOURCES / RECURSOS HUMANOS ITURRI Group Annual Training Plan The basis of the ITURRI Group is the people which comprise it. The conclusions from these surveys carried out on the different courses showed a high level of satisfaction by the students on the abilities and knowledge of the trainers, the content and documentation provided. The subjects taught by ITURRI, both theoretical and practical, were of great interest to the users who considered the content to be highly applicable to their jobs. INDUSTRY Courses on fire protection at Endesa Tenerife, taught by the ITURRI Group ENDESA The training of Endesa technicians in the Tenerife headquarters of Granadilla has been carried out by technicians from the ITURRI Group. The courses advised on the correct use of fire protection systems which are present in their facilities. During the month of February 12 training days were carried out in which all the control, maintenance, safety and operations technicians took part. These were the main topics taught: handling equipment and manoeuvre control, knowledge of fire detection and extinguishing systems, programming, guidelines for plant staff action in evacuation and emergency situations, architecture of systems and technical advice for the extension, maintenance and updating of their systems, both in fixed installations and vehicles. Those who participated in these training days were able to evaluate them in satisfaction questionnaires provided by Endesa to assess the level of satisfaction of the attendees. They are questionnaires which evaluate from the coordination and organisation of the course to the knowledge of the instructor and his teaching skills. 12 The objectives that the training set out to fulfil were fulfilled, beyond expectations: raising awareness among the users of these facilities about their correct use, informing about their risks and raising awareness about the safety that these systems provide on a daily basis. This enabled a large knowledge base to be gained on fire fighting, and meant that the users of these facilities become an active part, participating in future extensions and ceasing from seeing fire fighting equipment as just another element in the many facilities they have at their disposal. Endesa intends to extend this training to the rest of the company plants in the Canary Islands. 13 SATISFIED CUSTOMER / CLIENTE SATISFECHO NEWSLETTER 35 • JULY 2012 JULIO INDUSTRY INDUSTRY Another year of collaboration with FIAT in Poland Significant improvements to the workwear of Navantia employees in San Fernando, Puerto Real and Cadiz FIAT The FIAT Auto Poland factory in Tychy, Poland, began manufacturing cars in 1992 and to date has produced 6.2 million vehicles. It is a self-inflatable and selfexpandable Roto Pack barrier device. When it is collected it requires very little space and is always ready for immediate deployment by simply towing with the trailer without the need for additional driving equipment. The self-inflating barrier’s flotation chambers are subject to atmospheric pressure, therefore its adaptation to the movement of the waves is exceptional. The self-inflating barrier is automatically inflated without the need for artificial air supply, which means that it is always ready for use. It does not require any human action, except tying the towline to the towing vessel in order to unfold the barrier. Inside, the barrier has foldable frames pre-tensioned by stainless steel springs. The sections are divided into watertight compartments 1.5 to 2 m in length according to the model. Each air compartment has watertight air chambers as a flotation reserve in the event of damage. This makes the self-inflating barrier practically unsinkable. The protective foam layer which surrounds the internal frames ensures important positive buoyancy even when there is no air in the chambers. In this way, a bundle of rolled up barrier can be towed from a crane or helicopter. Or it can simply be dragged from the edge of a boat. It is kept afloat and is unfolded only by the towing vessel. EMERGENCIES Fire fighting vehicles for fire fighters in Malaga PROVINCIAL CONSORTIUM OF FIRE FIGHTERS OF MALAGA The Provincial Consortium of Fire fighters of Malaga has acquired four 4x4 rural fire fighting vehicles and a 28-metre long telescopic articulated arm. The rural vehicles have been built on Mercedes Benz 924 chassis by the ITURRI Group, and have a capacity to hold 1,100 litres of water and are equipped with great urban and release rescue devices, fire fighting and rescue equipment. They are designed with smaller dimensions to attend to the access requirements of old towns in the towns and cities which they serve. This is the result of multiple joint engineering studies between Consortium and ITURRI Group technicians. José Gallego (Supramunicipal Area Director of Malaga Council / Director de Área Supramunicipal de la Diputación de Málaga), Manuel Marmolejo (Manager of the Provincial Consortium of Fire fighters of Malaga / Gerente Consorcio Málaga), Elías Bendodo (Chairman of Malaga Council / Presidente de Diputación de Málaga), Abdeslam Jesús Auolad Ben Salem Lucena (Chairman of the Provincial Consortium of Fire fighters of Malaga / Presidente Consorcio Provincial Bomberos Málaga) For its part, the VEMA 283 TFL telescopic articulated arm on the Mercedes Benz Axor 1829 chassis enables a height of 28 metres to be reached. It has a very wide work cage which enables 4 professionals to extinguish the fire, allowing horizontal access during the extinguishing of fires in industrial warehouses. Furthermore, the work cage has an electricity and air supply, which affords it great independence and safety in the professional fire fighters’ actions. Passive safety of the vehicle is achieved with the incorporation of a rear camera with automatic activation that enables the fire fighter-driver to have the whole of the rear part of the vehicle at the forefront. To extinguish any fire a store of water is required from which to pump the necessary flow to supply the extinguishing equipment. However, in certain circumstances it is very difficult to reach the source of the water store due to the restrictions of the suction of the pumps or simply due to the difficulty in moving the pump to the source. Interactive tour of the Itálica archaeological site The Itálica archaeological site, located in the municipality of Santiponce in the province of Seville, is the oldest Roman settlement on the mainland. The town of Itálica was founded in 206 BC by General Publius Cornelius Scipio in order to station the injured soldiers who had fought against the Carthaginians in Ilipa, where the town of Alcalá del Río is located today. The name Itálica is derived from General Scipio’s country of birth, Italy, and the town initially had the legal status of Vicus Civium Romanorum. The period of greatest development arrived with the Emperors Marcus Ulpius Traianus (53-117), born in the town, and Publius Aelius Hadrianus (76-138). Under the mandate of Hadrianus, who was born in Rome but whose family came from Itálica, the town underwent great development and was awarded the category of colony with the name Aelius Augustus Italica Colony. Both the size and the wealth of the town decreased between the 3rd and the 4th centuries. Our colleagues José Carrasco, José Luis Lagares, Juan Manuel Medrano, Juan Ramón Gómez and Antonio Aguilar have become true heroes. On 14 May they put out a fire in the vicinity of the ITURRI Group Footwear Factory in La Palma (Huelva). According to the report written by Manuel Andrés Brazo Baena of the Provincial Consortium of Fire Fighters of Huelva, the fire started in some eucalyptus trees with a fair amount of undergrowth next to the façade of the factory and the railway line. This report specifies that it was “the workers themselves on the inside who controlled the fire with a large capacity hose, installed in a water tank in the factory, however, the flames had already penetrated the building burning a shelf of lasts and were extinguished by the workers.” The Civil Guard verified “that if it wasn’t for the factory workers who extinguished the flames from inside by using the hose, it is very likely that they would not have been able to control it,” which could have had terrible consequences. Next to the factory are an elderly care home and a box warehouse. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our colleagues for their quick actions and bravery.
