La Estación de tren de Massy Palaiseau, próximo a París, es un bello ejemplo
de arquitectura textil y de construcción ligera. Por la ligereza de la obra así
como por la flexibilidad en materia de explotación…
La luz se difumina a través del techo, el ahorro de energía es real y medible.
El impacto de esta arquitectura es igualmente social: la luz suave; la elección
de los materiales han reducido significativamente la degradación.
A largo plazo, quizá las necesidades habrán evolucionado y convenga aumentar
las capacidades de la infraestructura, reemplazarla o desplazarla, o simplemente
¡habrá que desmontarla!
¿Qué quedará entonces de la obra? Telas compuestas de polímeros de alta
tecnología, testados durante largos periodos que encontrarán muy fácilmente
un reempleo durable o que integrarán el bucle de reciclaje Texyloop® para
comenzar un segunda vida.

What is ecologically conceived
can be clearly expressed…
In 1998, Serge Ferrari and partner Solvay™ created
Vinyloop™, a recycling process for composite PVC materials.
Two years later, Serge Ferrari set up Texyloop®, a recycling
process applied to composite textiles. Two more years later,
the company moved into the industrialisation phase and
invested 6 million euros in a processing plant.
Finally, in 2007, Serge Ferrari set up a European collection
network and the symbolic figure of 100 tonnes per year of
collected composite membranes was reached.
Texyloop , is the end result of in-depth thinking and research
into technical textile materials, highlighting both its qualities
and challenges.
Towards systemic logic…
At Serge Ferrari, sustainable development is the core driving
force from start to end. Texyloop® recycling has been fully
integrated within a systemic loop circuit, where «nothing is
lost, everything is converted».

Lightweight: textile structures consume minimal resources,
the fabric is light, as are the completed structures. Their
very lightweight nature reduces fabrication, transport and
construction impacts, empitomising embodied energy
minimisation.
Durable: the modular, convertible and easy maintenance
of textile structures allow for multiple re-use. However, the
only options available for the textile at its end of life were
burning, incineration, illegal abandonment or open air burning.
It was these unsustainable practices that left a gap in the
products life cycle. Texyloop® was created to close the
gap: lightweight and durable, composite PVC Textiles are
now recyclable. Texyloop® reconstitute composite PVC
textiles into base resources for future production.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) demonstrate the relevance
and eco-efficiency of Texyloop® in conserving the natural
resources that represent, on average, 80% of environmental
impacts.
But the company goes further:
• it assists its clients in a sustainable development plan,
• it encourages re-usage initiatives in keeping with the
Freitag® and Reversible® companies in Switzerland and
France respectively,
• it invests in coated textiles research, aimed at formulation
progress and discovering new biomass-based sources,
• it integrates its construction materials into the High
Environmental Quality (HEQ) scheme,
• it is committed to improving information on risks and future
challenges through involvement in major organisations, such
as Greenfact®, of which it is a founding member.
Thus, every day, the virtuous cycle initiated by in-depth
reflection on the life cycle of our products is extended and
integrates new physical components, which contribute to
focussing the whole company, and all our strengths and
talents, in an eco-design rationale.

Lo que se eco-concibe bien, se reconoce…
En 1998, Serge Ferrari y su socio SolvayTM crean VinyloopTM,
procedimiento de reciclaje de los compuestos PVC. Dos años
más tarde, Serge Ferrari crea Texyloop®, procedimiento de reciclaje
aplicado a los textiles compuestos. Dos años más tarde, la empresa
pasa a la fase de industrialización e invierte 6 millones de euros en
una unidad industrial.
Finalmente, en 2007, Serge Ferrari constituye una red de colecta para
los desechos en Europa, y la cifra simbólica de 1,000 toneladas
de membranas compuestas recogidas por año es rápidamente
superada.
Esta iniciativa es el resultado de una reflexión en profundidad sobre
el material textil técnico que ha hecho emerger, en su día, sus
cualidades y sus defectos.
Ligeros: las obras textiles consumen mínimas cantidades de recursos,
la tela es ligera, las estructuras también, el impacto de instalación
se reduce. Las realizaciones son ejecutadas según el doble principio
de la justa cantidad, para el tiempo justo.
Durables: de mantenimiento fácil, las obras textiles son utilizadas
numerosas veces. Modulables y transformables, son empleadas
de nuevo para diferentes aplicaciones. Aún hace falta rizar el rizo
y actuar directamente sobre el fondo de la cuestión: ¡el fin de vida!
La ocultación, la incineración, peor aún, el abandono “salvaje” o la
quema al aire libre eran, hay que reconocerlo, la regla.
Es esta regla la que el bucle Texyloop® ha puesto en tela de juicio.
Ligeros y durables, los textiles compuestos PVC son a partir de
ahora reciclables. Texyloop® reconstituye los recursos de base
en fin de ciclo.
Hacia una lógica sistemática…
En Serge Ferrari, el desarrollo durable no es una parte de la estrategia,
sino el corazón, el motor, el comienzo y el final, el reciclaje es un
oficio industrial incluido en un bucle sistemático: “nada se pierde,

Précontraint Serge Ferrari® technology guarantees the fabric’s
exceptional dimensional stability, which is almost identical in
warp and weft directions. Deformation resistance in the weft
direction exceeds that of conventional coated fabrics. This
exclusive advantage is very important during textile tensioning.

Serge Ferrari has undertaken a survey of textile buildings incorporating Précontraint membranes installed since 1982, reviewing the latter
regarding strength, durability and safety. This survey reveals a textile durability way beyond 20 years, a highly favourable environmental
behaviour and a long-term fire resistance in keeping with original standards.

“LowE” low emissivity:
a thermal barrier
Physical principle
The LowE function is obtained by calibrated
application of an aluminised treatment to
the fabric, which acts as a thermal barrier.
This LowE function complements the other
thermal solutions already offered by flexible
membranes for blinds and permanent or
temporary structures (double or triple skin,
opaque option, etc.).
It should be noted that, amongst these
options, LowE treatment can be calibrated
to conserve a level of fabric translucency,
thereby maintaining the natural light input
into the building.
Emissivity
Material surface property, ranging from 0 to 1: expression
of a material’s capacity to reflect and emit heat.
Solar spectrum
As a comparison, we can say that a material with 0 emissivity
is located in the Thermal range as a pure white in the Visible
wavelength: there is no exchange with its environment, it
reflects everything it receives.
On the opposite, a material with an emissivity of 1 (highest)
exchanges a great deal with its environment.

In winter, the interior of a well heated room emits thermal radiation,
which tends to escape outside. The presence of LowE treatment on
the inner side of the membrane allows this heat to be reflected back
into the room. The gain in thermal conductivity (U) is 15% for a
translucent LowE membrane. Moreover, the LowE effect can be
cumulative with the double skin solution, which has already proven
itself: the above gain then exceeds 50%.

Construction of the “Shanghai New International Exhibition Center” (SNIEC) is a colossal project aimed
at creating 17 exhibition halls and a conference centre. 11 exhibition halls and an entrance hall are covered
by a high-performance textile membrane ensuring roof watertightness, whilst promoting conservation of
natural light.
Made of Précontraint 1002 Fluotop T2 LowE fabric, the back of the membrane has received a low emissivity
treatment limiting radiation within the building, thereby ensuring savings in air-conditioning costs.
La construcción de “Shanghai New International
Exhibition Center” (SNIEC) es una obra absolutamente
colosal cuyo objetivo es crear 17 salas de exposición
y un centro de conferencias. 11 salas de exposición
y la recepción están cubiertas por una membrana
textil de altas prestaciones, asegurando la estanqueidad
del techo a la vez que se conserva la luz natural.

Fluotop T2 LowE, la membrana se beneficia de
una tratamiento de baja emisividad en el reverso,

The Tubaloon

Architect: Snøhetta AS
The Tubaloon is a dynamic, modular venue from an acoustic standpoint.
Its classical shell shape overhangs the auditorium, preserving an intimate
acoustic environment during soft passages of music, whilst its composite
membrane construction features virtually total acoustic transparency for
amplified passages of the performance. A horn-shaped opening above
the stage brings an element of chance into play by allowing passages
of oratorio to drift unpredictably over the city of Kongsberg.
El Tubaloon es, en el plano acústico, un lugar dinámico y modulable.
Su forma clásica de concha domina el auditorio, permitiendo mantener un efecto
sonoro de ambiente íntimo durante los momentos musicales suaves, mientras
que su construcción con membrana compuesta está dotada de una transparencia
sonora, casi total, para los momentos amplificados del espectáculo. Por una
abertura en forma de cuerno sobre el escenario, entra en juego casualmente

The Tubaloon, designed by Snøhetta, is the main stage for the annual Kongsberg Jazz Festival,
one of the oldest and most renowned festivals dedicated to the genre.
El Tubaloon, concebido por SnØhetta, es el escenario
principal para el Kongsberg Jazz Festival anual, uno de
los más antiguos y más estimados de este género
de festivales.
A structure that is easy to install and resistant
to the abuses of repeated occupancy was
required. Précontraint 1002 S, with its
calibrated PVDF surface treatment allowing
disassembly, was selected for its durability
and reactivity to lighting effects. This is a hybrid
structure with its 1-metre diameter pneumatic
tubes combined and hourglass-shaped
tensioned membrane.

Es por su durabilidad y su reactividad de cara a los efectos de iluminación que el Précontraint 1002S, con su

The 20 m high, 40 m long structure seems to be on the point
of breaking free of the ties mooring it to the Kirketorget
cobbles and to let itself drift away to the heavens. Its geometry
calls to mind natural musical shapes such as wind instruments
or inner ear ducts.
La estructura (20 m alto, alrededor de 40 m de largo) da la impresión
de estar a punto de arrancarse de las uniones que la retienen a los
adoquines de Kirketorget, para dejarse elevar hacia los cielos.
Su geometría evoca las formas de una acústica musical natural,
tales como los instrumentos de viento o los canales del oído interno.

“Four Seasons Tented Camp is one of my most elaborate projects.
Creating a luxury hotel in the form of tents falls within my work on the
interior-exterior concept and enables me to combine my commitment to
traditional architecture, my ecological sensitivity and my taste for escapism.
For this type of design, the choice of tent material was critical from both
aesthetic and technical standpoints, the tents being right in the middle

“Four Seasons Tented Camp es uno de mis proyectos más elaborados. Crear un
hotel de lujo con forma de tiendas entra dentro de mi trabajo sobre el concepto
de interior - exterior, y permite asociar mi apego a la arquitectura tradicional, mi
sensibilidad ecológica y mi gusto por la evasión. Para tal proyecto, la elección

The effect observed in the daytime is quite different to that in the night, deriving from
the specific characteristics of the Stamisol FT fabric. In the daytime, the textile is a
major visual element linking the different building structural components, creating uniform
unity. Conversely, after nightfall, the shop and office internal life is visible from the outside
and itself becomes a façade.
Gracias a la especificidad de las propiedades del tejido Stamisol FT, el efecto observado durante el
día es muy diferente al de la noche. Durante el día, el textil es un elemento visual importante que une
los diferentes componentes de la estructura del edificio, creando una unidad homogénea. En cambio,

On a functional level, Stamisol FT 381 matched perfectly to the requirements of this project. It admirably
fulfills the function of an anti-dazzle filter on the glass facades and grill-mounted features, whilst being
almost totally transparent, when looking out. This covering also offers the advantage of high structural
strength. A quality choice, which is also a cost saving feature. Not forgetting a key point: for a textile
company, having an entire façade clad with this material represents a tremendous way of symbolising
the group’s corporate identity.
Sobre un plano funcional, el textil Stamisol FT 381 responde de forma ideal a las exigencias de este proyecto.
Reemplaza de forma admirable la función de filtro anti-deslumbramiento en fachadas de vidrio y montaje con rejilla,

The solution developed for the Nestlé® production site is a “false double façade”. The first
compact and closed skin is made of Stamisol FA fabric, ensuring thermal insulation of the
building.
The second skin, located 60 cm in front of the first, is a screen made of open metalwork in
front of a Stamisol FA membrane. This conceals the building’s functional components:
air inlets and outlets, valves, pipes, etc.

Today, composite membranes are rightly considered
as true building materials. Many technical resources are
available to specifiers and construction professionals.
This section is intended as an introduction to these
resources and to encourage emergence of a competent
technical channel (consulting engineers, fabricators,
installation networks and international bodies) geared
to managing and implementing technical textiles in the
building industry.
In the same spirit, Serge Ferrari has set up a specification department, which offers custom assistance to
professionals.
Serge Ferrari undertakes to promote textiles

In this section, our aim is to provide a brief, legible and
understandable set of data highlighting the capacity of
Serge Ferrari composite membranes to contribute actively
to sustainable development strategies.
These data are valid right across our product ranges and
provide solutions to the prime concerns of architects and
clients. The qualities specific to each reference can be
obtained by referring to its particular documentation, which
is available on request. Finally, we invite you to read the
text entitled “What is ecologically conceived can be clearly
expressed” to obtain information on all Serge Ferrari initiatives
and its global policy on sustainable development.
Energy balance
The transparency, translucency, insulation and solar protection
qualities of Serge Ferrari textiles make them natural allies of
low energy consumption buildings.
Lifespan
Certification
The company obtained initial ISO 14001 certification in
2003. This standard is based on the principle of continued
improvement in environmental performance through control
of impacts associated with the company’s activity. Serge Ferrari
has adopted a dual commitment to continued progress
and compliance with regulations. This allows us to implement
properly our approach to setting up a management system,
to ensure its traceability and to give it the credibility resulting
from certification by an external body.
Recycling
Texyloop®, a powerful concrete initiative
Since April 2003, the Texyloop® process has enabled the
Serge Ferrari Group to receive, identify, store and recycle
a growing quantity of textiles at the end of their service
lives as well as cutting waste.
Serge Ferrari’s R&D department created the Texyloop®
process based on unique technology for recycling PVC coated
textiles. The Texyloop® process produces ready-to-use
polyester fibre and soft PVC. The high quality of these materials
enables their reuse in many manufacturing processes. After
launching an industrial facility, the Serge Ferrari Group has
undertaken building of a Europe-wide collection network.
A specific website (www.texyloop.com) allows us to monitor
progress on this European network.
Re-integration of recycled materials into membranes
The lifespan of Précontraint Serge Ferrari® membranes is
considerably extended by an “effective” protective layer.
Composite membrane long-term performance in terms of
its structural characteristics is directly proportional to the
thickness of the coating layer at the top of the yarns.
For 30 years, Serge Ferrari has been committed to monitoring
structures using its membranes. Today, this behind-thescenes work provides us with hard and fast facts in relation
to this issue:
• preservation of aesthetics, in particular textile brilliance
and colourfastness,
• exceptional long-term dimensional stability.
Please consult our specific documents giving the results
of these surveys for further details.
The Texyloop® process allows over 90% of the Serge Ferrari
product ranges to be recycled, but the next stage is to use
the recycled materials in composing the membranes
themselves. This has now been achieved through using
recycled PVC in several of our references.
To provide clear, legible information, the Serge Ferrari Group
has decided to:
• perform LCA’s of all its products,
• make full versions of all LCA’s publicly available,
• assist its clients in drawing up their full LCA’s.
All LCA’s on Serge Ferrari products are double checked
by internationally recognised independent bodies: EVEA
(France) and CIRAIG (Canada).

end-of-life scenarios
The advantage of life cycles is that they provide an overall
view of the true impact of products and, in particular, this
enables one to emphasise the main advantages : the lightness
of technical textiles, their durability and henceforth, with
Texyloop®, their recycling capacity.
The overall aim and energy balance of technical textiles
appear highly satisfactory from this angle. All of
our product references have already been subject to
LCA (see example below for both external and internal
solar protection textiles).

Textile architecture
Textile architecture embraces flexible membranes, allowing
extensive architectural freedom, internal natural lighting and
highlighting of both roof and façade areas.
Natural light and translucency
Natural light is an integral part of textile architecture: it is its
prime advantage.
Lighting effects
Textile architecture is especially adapted to bold lighting
effects. As an example, the interior-to-exterior luminosity transforms
the structure into a lighthouse or illuminated sign structure and
bestows on it an unusual nocturnal identity. Moreover, textile
membrane surfaces are easily converted into giant screens
to support the most sophisticated projected images.

Natural lighting determines the visual comfort of users and
natural light is a structuring component of a project:
• in a growing number of countries, natural light supply is covered
by official recommendations based on statutory texts. In

• In a practical safety datasheet (ED 82), the Institut National
de Recherche et de Sécurité (INRS) states that, in workplace
design, natural lighting control is of prime importance in ensuring
enough light for the needs of personnel.
Colour formulation and long-term fastness
As the prestigious façade of Madrid’s Puerta America Hotel
shows, Serge Ferrari membranes can be manufactured in
different colours for specific projects. Rigorous selection of
the best colour pigments and optimised coating colorimetric
formulations ensure long-term colourfastness. These requirements have been verified by highly discriminating UV accelerated aging (4000 h) and assessment tests based on
Standard NF EN ISO 4892-3.
Textile architecture
Safety
Natural lighting created by a translucent fabric roof fulfils a
key role in safety terms. It provides top lighting through the
whole roof area and therefore prevents creation of shadow
areas in work and storage locations.

Durability
The durability of a structure can be appreciated from both
structural integrity and contractual guarantee standpoints,
but also involves its long-term aesthetic appearance.
Mechanical strength
Précontraint Serge Ferrari® membranes have a considerably
extended lifespan because of a top protective layer. Long-term
continuity of composite membrane mechanical characteristics
is directly proportional to the thickness of the coating layer at
the top of the yarns. Close monitoring of specific projects has
enabled us to measure the residual tensile strength of membranes
after a number of years on site at various latitudes.

“LOW WICK” thread treatment
The high-tenacity polyester threads dedicated to textile
architecture are subjected to the “Low Wick” anti-capillarity
treatment. Applied during thread production at the Serge Ferrari
Group’s spinning facility, this treatment prevents moisture rising
up the threads, mainly on the exposed side of the weld. This
results in a far better membrane appearance due to uniform
transparency.
• Colour retention: after 10 years, PVDF treatment discoloured
itself up to 2.5 NBS units. The best of the other coatings
presents a colour variation of 5 NBS units.

LowE (low emissivity) treatment has a direct impact on the
radiation phenomenon. It:
• reduces energy consumption,
• conserves natural light,
• improves comfort by cooling atmospheres.
Total weight < 10 kg/m²; for the same floor area, a conventional
structure would have weighed between 30 and 40 kg/m².
Seismic zone
Membrane flexibility allows a degree of bending and movement
without damage in relation to structural watertightness and
durability.
In high seismic risk areas, such as Japan, textile membranes
offer a construction solution that has been extensively developed.
Thermal performance
Principle
Textile membranes can directly contribute to improving thermal
gain and thus energy balances in buildings, in which they have
been implemented:
• by opting for the double membrane principle,
• by allowing opaque alternatives,
• by favouring a LowE-treated membrane.
This is illustrated by the TexTherm aid: pre-sizing software for
air handling units, which computes the impact of various
installed membrane combinations subjected to selected internal
and external constraints.

Material, colour, transparency, the façade is the most expressive
component of the building. Serge Ferrari has several suitable
membranes offering new architectural and technical solutions.
In partnership with the technical textile profession, the company
has launched an innovative system comprising a combination
of two membranes.
Resistance to fungicides and bacteria
Stamisol Color resists bacteria and is subjected to anti-fungicide
treatment.

Basis of the system
The “façade” solution is a system comprising one or two
combined membranes:
• a Stamisol FT cladding fabric,
• a Stamisol Color insulating breather membrane.
The breather membrane ensures rain proofness and insulation,
the cladding fabric protects against impacts, driving rain, hail,
snow, etc. and constitutes highly efficient solar protection.
Transparent appearance and colour range allow creation of
multiple effects (coordinated ranges).
System qualities
Lightness
The façade system distinguishes itself by its lightness: no
more than 5 kg/m² (including frame weight). In comparison, the
unit weight of the lightest façade materials, such as terracotta,
is more or less 30 kg/m². This can be a decisive argument for
it can impact on the entire structure, whilst offering significant
advantages in renovation work.
Strength
The system benefits from all the advantages of Précontraint
Serge Ferrari® technology, especially in terms of its elongation
and tearing resistance. The textile is dimensionally stable and
does not deform (e.g. under the effects of a storm) and,
paradoxically, offers greater impact resistance than rigid materials,
which deform under the slightest impact. Furthermore, a new
generation of fabrics integrating stainless steel strands into
their weave, makes these technical membranes totally tear-proof.
Durability
Stamisol Color contributes to providing high-quality insulation,
thereby protecting the building from dampness and significantly
prolonging the life of the building by protecting its supporting
structures.
Stamisol Color is the ideal product for open and openwork
facades. It can be combined with all materials: wood, textile,
glass and metal.
Colour
Stamisol Color, in particular, is used in timber construction in
which open joints are common. Black is frequently favoured for
wood. Openwork metal or glass facades offer the opportunity
to highlight bright colours. Stamisol Color is effectively highly
resistant to UV radiation.
Protection from rain and open to water vapour
diffusion
Stamisol Color reacts “like a skin”: the membrane allows humidity
to pass for inside to outside. Just like a real “Gore-Tex®” for
the building, the membrane resists rain, whilst allowing the
façade to breathe.
Rain proofness
Rainproof-breathable Stamisol screens ensure perfect insulation
and ventilation. Stamisol Color contributes to both improving
building energy balance and compliance with official thermal
regulations (RT2005, RT2012, etc.). It ensures total protection
against rain, humidity and wind, all of which are guarantees
of thermal insulation efficiency and durability. From an energy
saving standpoint, Stamisol Color is also suitable for creating
dynamic partitions, which are additional heating sources based
on air intakes located between the membrane and the glass
façade. Due to the membrane’s exceptional breathability, the
building’s residual humidity is quickly evacuated towards the
outside to enhance the well-being of occupants and conserve
building durability.

Installation
Stamisol Color is conditioned in roll form and is glued to the
structural support, facing the façade thermal insulation. Ensuring
perfect insulation, Stamisol Color is compatible with every
construction material. Its wide range of specific accessories
allows a very high specification and finish to be achieved.

A colour range suitable for facades
Serge Ferrari and a team of colourists have designed a range
specially suited to building facades. 27 colours, divided into
several families: pastel, pure and dark colours... to create
reflections, whilst a slightly pearly, glossy varnish provides a
soft metallised appearance.
“Multilayer” effects
The transparency of Stamisol FT, a mesh textile available in
multiple colours allows one to play on façade colour and depth.
Exceptional strength and lifespan
There are many references bearing witness to the durability of
this material. The very first textile façade was in fact installed
in 1992 at a multi-storey car park in Avignon. 14 years after
its installation, the residual textile strength was 90% of the
original specification in the warp direction and 80% in weft
direction. The fabric has also kept all the properties of its
M2 fire rating.
Graphic personalisation
Stamisol FT is suitable for current digital or serigraphic printing
processes.
Dynamic façade combined with solar protection
textiles
Many colours in the Stamisol FT range are also available in
the Soltis solar protection range. This harmonisation enables
designers to combine blinds and façade coverings.
Architectural lighting
Textile façade solutions are especially suited to new architectural
lighting. Membrane transparency enables many light effects to
be created and volumes to be highlighted.
“3D” facade
Facade flexibility combined with textile technical characteristics
prompts ever bolder creations for 3D covering of building
facades. Every design shape may be imagined, including
sculptures or monolithic buildings, to create a coherent system
based on the different components making up the building
envelope.
Thermal comfort and energy savings
Façade solutions contribute to building thermal control. Mindful
of this, the ventilated façade is the key to overall high energy
performance both in summer and winter.
Thanks to Stamisol FT, the ventilated façade gives particularly
positive results, even without thermal insulation. According to
physical measurements taken by the German technical institute
Zentrum für Umweltbewusstes Bauen e.V, Stamisol FT reduces
heat loss by 15 – 18% and thereby contributes to the comfort
of building occupants in winter.
Stamisol FT prevents overheating in summer. Building external
heat intake varies based on the absorption coefficient of the
selected shade, but does not exceed 25% of the solar flux.
Thus, in California, a façade renovation has objectively
demonstrated the advantages of this solution: before facade
renovation, two air-conditioning systems operated continuously
all the year round and, after renovation and installation of a
textile facade, energy costs were reduced by 64%.
Transparency
Stamisol FT allows light to pass, whilst maintaining room
intimacy. It allows outward visibility, especially in dark shades.
Security against vandalism
Stamisol FT’s extreme flexibility ensures its greater resistance
to every form of natural attack than most rigid materials (stone,
ceramics, etc.). Unlike glass, the material is not fragile and is
rarely subjected to vandalistic acts.
Easy maintenance
Stamisol FT’s special surface coating effectively protects the
facade from dirt staining and surrounding pollution. Its mesh
structure is less sensitive to the effects of aging (stains, run-off,
etc.) than a closed surface. In addition, its antifungal treatment
protects against natural attack. In the event of damage, the
damaged module can be quickly replaced due to the textile’s
very easy fitting method.
Robustness
Stamisol FT is distinctive because of its extraordinary tearing
strength (6.6 T/m), whilst remaining flexible and highly resistant
to deformation. Stamisol FT resists the meteorological constraints
of the strongest winds and therefore stands up to the most
rigorous climate.
In combination with Stamisol Color, Stamisol FT ensures
efficient protection against bad weather.
Serge Ferrari’s specification department provides on request
bi-axial curve diagrams of the product giving both static and
tensioning forces.
Fire safety
In addition to the M1 and B1 fire ratings for France and
Germany respectively, Stamisol FT is also certified Euroclass
B-s2,d0 according to the new European fire regulations.
Acoustic insulation
Ventilated facades represent an effective means of minimising
noise pollution in an urban environment. Stamisol FT’s mesh
structure contributes to significant noise reduction by absorption.
Frequency permeability
Stamisol FT is particularly suitable for cladding antenna and
transmitting masts. Based on measurements taken by Kassel
University (Germany), Stamisol FT is totally permeable to
frequencies between 45 MHz and approximately 25 GHz.
This band has no impact on wave reception or emission quality.

Solar protection textiles
Solar protection status has changed over a number of years.
Formerly considered accessory and often overlooked upstream
of construction, it is now an integral part of design. Everything
has changed: expectations of users, views of architects and
the regulatory context. Thus, within the scope of European
regulations (including year 2012 thermal regulations), minimum
solar characteristics are required for glazed areas of buildings,
whether air-conditioned or not.

Solar protection, heat and light
comfort
Solar protection depends on the sun’s apparent trajectory during
the day, i.e. on the date and latitude of the location, and on
the glazed area’s orientation and inclination. Solar protection
is a factor to be considered very early in a project design.

Temperature drop
Soltis textiles allow a significant reduction in solar factor. To
link this factor with a temperature drop, we need to consider
the configuration of each building and the choice of colours
(see Soltis Roller Disk box). Case studies reveal a difference
of 8 - 15 °C between the inside and outside of a building.
Energy balance and thermal performance:
a new tool, Textinergie®
The Serge Ferrari Group is actively involved in an initiative aimed
at evaluating the thermal performance of solar protection fabrics.
Textinergie® is a simple tool, available on Internet:
(www.textinergie.org), which enables one to evaluate the energy
savings due to textile solar protection features.
Lighting comfort
The transparency of the textile allow light to filter in, contributing
to the creation of quality lighting moods in environments. The
Serge Ferrari Group has developed product ranges specifically
for large openings. These ranges establish a new standard for
building external blinds, conventional and glass roofs.
Good to know! In a working environment allowing
computer work under optimum conditions, use of solar
protection guaranteeing a light transmission coefficient
less than 5% is recommended.
Colours have a determining influence on textile thermal and
lighting performance. The Soltis range offers metallised and
interferential aspects suited to new architectural trends; these
widen the inspirational field for designers, leading to thermal and
lighting performance harmony. The Serge Ferrari specification
department possesses extensive data of help to specifiers,
when selecting colours.
Optimisation of heat and light inputs
• In winter: the sun’s radiation is a source of quality heating
and natural lighting. Its optimisation requires clearance of
the glass area by a system of blinds and incorporation of
clear glazing.
• In summer: energy inputs should be controlled to limit
the use of air-conditioning whilst enjoying the comfort of
natural light.
The European standard
The new European Standard EN 14501 specifies the classes
for solar protection textile thermal and visual performance. This
allows us to compare products based on an identical frame
of reference for all European countries.
Wind sensor controls
Several systems enable the wind factor to be controlled. These
systems are what we call blind animation.
These systems operate with sensors called anemometers;
based on a given wind load, these anemometers:
• automatically raise the blinds,
• tension the fabric using a spring system.
Soltis is especially suitable for these systems and is easy to
tension. Its elongation under load is low and allows external
installation of blinds up to 16 m². Façade wind control also
involves programming movements, which allows the operator
to anticipate the solar protection by lowering blinds at the right
moment, i.e. before the sun enters the building.

Soltis accompanies architectural development, which
continues to increase the size of glazed areas in public or

Recyclability

its own European collection network.
LCA and FDES
“Fiches de Déclarations Environnementales et Sanitaires” or
FDES [health and environmental datasheets] consolidate a
product’s life cycle: raw material creation, textile manufacturing,
life on site, life on building, recycling and replacement. These
datasheets are edited in cooperation with the Syndicat Français
des Enducteurs Calandreurs (SFEC) [French textile rolling and
coating union] and validated by an independent third party.

Aid to optimising thermal
and lighting performance:
Soltis Roller Disk
The Soltis Roller Disk is an aid designed to make building
professionals aware of, and encourage them to take into account,
the thermal and lighting performance characteristics of textiles
based on the selected colour. In a sweep of the hand, the
aid allows the heat and light performance characteristics of
each colour to be evaluated based on classes specified in
European Standard EN 14501. The professional can then provide
well-founded advice adapted to the project solar protection
requirements, the solar exposure, the required performance in
terms of coolness and lighting environment.

Installation systems
The lightness and flexibility of composite fabrics, combined with
high mechanical strengths and excellent acoustic absorption
characteristics enable textile solutions to establish themselves
in a highly varied technical, aesthetic and functional range.
Serge Ferrari has accompanied the development of textile
installation systems. Fabric panels are assembled by highfrequency welding or vulcanisation for silicone-based composites.
Batyline textiles can be installed by lacing, traction springs and
frames, etc. These systems allow easy partial or total dismantling.
Batyline collection
The richness of the Batyline collection is based on the fabric’s
high-performance components:
• high-tenacity polyester or fibreglass yarns,
• vinyl resin extrusion or silicone resin coating.
This allows it to satisfy a wide variety of applications and constraints.
On average, Batyline tensioned ceilings can be installed at a
rate of 60 - 80 m²/day/team of 2 co-workers (depending on
the difficulty of special points to be dealt with and the technical
inserts to be integrated).

The lightness of the material allows large pre-assembled areas
(up to 200 m²) to be installed in one piece to create every
imaginable shape, curve and volume. These panels ensure wide
spans, contributing to the overall lightness of the structures.
Aesthetics and light
• Available in multiple colours, printable and offering different
material effects, the Batyline range contributes to the spatial
conceptual identity. Batyline HM Tweed can be manufactured
using combinations of unique colour threads for a specific project.
• Lighting effects are also a key component of interior design.
Natural or artificial light contributes to the atmosphere of a

The main installation systems are totally mastered by the
professional network within ADEPPT (Association des Entreprises
et des Professionnels du Plafond Tendu) [French tensioned
ceiling professional association], which has contributed to
Standard EN 14716 and Code of Practice DTU 58.2 on
tensioned ceilings. These professionals also install wall, partition
and screen wall applications and general interior fittings.
Tensioning by lacing
Tension is exerted around the full periphery
by a Serge Ferrari Silcord elastic cord,
which connects the textile to the surrounding walls. Limits per panel are 200 m²
in area and 9 m in span and must be
specified based on the collection references. Serge Ferrari
Silcord silicone-based elastic cords ensure long-term (10-year
guarantee) uniform controlled tension, whilst offering fire resistance
compatible with the EUROCLASS classification for Batyline
textiles.

Moreover, Batyline SK 300 integrates its own very high acoustic
performance characteristics without resorting to voluminous
absorbing material. Its micro-perforated texture means it can
be used for ceiling panels, which diffuse light whilst fulfilling
the function of acoustic absorber.
Insensitivity to water leaks
Unlike mineral ceiling tiles, this composite is unaffected by water:
no stains from uncontrolled leaks.
Impact resistance
The material’s flexibility enables it to absorb impacts and return
to its initial shape intact. This allows it to remain undamaged
during different construction phases or disturbed renovation
periods. This characteristic also allows the fabric to be used in
gyms and sports halls.
Maintenance
Thanks to their formulation, Batyline fabrics offer high dirt
resistance. When cleaning is required, this can be done by:
• de-dusting (vacuuming),
• cleaning after dismantling (using water and Serge Ferrari detergent)
Tensioning by metal tensioning frames
Various tensioning frames are available for installing ceiling,
light box, wall covering, etc. textiles. Please consult us for

Easy dismantling
The material’s flexibility and installation systems allow easy
partial dismantling to access the plenum, change lighting units
and perform all required maintenance operations.
Tensioned sail system
The basic principle involves tensioning the sail, usually of
triangular shape, at 3 points using cables inserted into a
peripheral sleeve. Several sails may overlap to achieve an
architectural effect.

Acoustic performance
The openwork nature of Batyline fabrics allows insulation material
to be aesthetically covered, whilst conserving its acoustic
absorption performance. The two materials combined thus

Smoke extraction compatibility: French IT 246 rules
Batyline XP5’s very open nature (63% free surface, 5 mm
openings) enables it to be used for tensioned ceilings beneath
smoke extraction systems in compliance with French IT 246 rules.

Recycling
Batyline textiles are 100% recyclable through the Texyloop®
process.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
A LCA (standardised method - ISO 14040-14044) has been
performed on Batyline fabrics to assess their environmental
impacts over their entire life cycle and based on end-of-life
solutions (incineration, disposal at waste facility or recycling).
What you should remember
Most environmental impacts (80% on average) relate to raw
material extraction and production.
Thus, the creation of raw materials from recycling is necessary
for significantly reducing impacts.
Recycled Batyline: Batyline “R”
This reference is the first textile manufactured from raw materials
derived from the Texyloop® recycling process.
