FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DAVIS:
Well, first of all I want to thank you for your support of
the Archbishop’s Charities Drive. Although (at the time
of deadline for the printing of this week’s bulletin) I
don’t have the latest figures for you, I sense that we are
well on our way to achieving this year’s ABCD goal.
Longtime donors to the ABCD have renewed their
commitments, and first time donors have joined this
important moment in the ministerial life of the
Archdiocese of Miami. I will give you an update next
week.
For those of you who have not yet sent in your pledge
envelopes, please do so as soon as possible. It can be
done, of course, via direct mail, i.e., sending it directly
to the Archdiocese of Miami, or by bringing your
pledge to the parish office. Either way, it is important
that everyone be involved, that everyone make a
sacrificial gesture of love during this one-time-per-year
annual appeal. Be sure that you mark on your
envelopes the name of the parish---Little Flower, Coral
Gables. Together, as one, in support of the Church, we
are strong. Let us all, therefore, take our place among
those that advance the cause of Christ and His
ministering Church.
The Scriptures readings at Mass, during these
inaugural weeks of Ordinary Time, are spectacularly
appropriate as we contemplate our charitable
involvement in the life of the Church. When we hear in
our Gospel this weekend about Jesus’ very purpose, his
mission and goal of ministry, to bring glad tidings to
the poor, healing and freedom to captives, and to
proclaim the favor of God on others, it is really a
summary of our own common call as “Church,” when
we act in His name. Perhaps we should measure our
ministries, our parish, even our own personal
discipleship on the Isaiah passage which Jesus read in
the synagogue way back then, as the guide post which
authenticates today our followership of the Lord whom
we love so much.
Our faith is not just a social experience; nor is it meant
to be just a cultural phenomenon. Our faith in Jesus
Christ is a relationship, daily chosen, whose
implications are meant to re-create the face of the
earth. Jesus’ dream of a world redeemed was precisely
that which propelled Him to fulfill His Heavenly
Father’s will. On our part, our prayer, liturgies,
devotion, reception of the Sacraments, stewardship on
behalf of the family of the Church, and our active
ministry on behalf of Christ’s Kingdom are the external
manifestations of the internal reality of our faith. Day
by day we are all called to personalize our convictions
about Jesus, and courageously stand up for Him with
fortitude as members of His Body, the Church.
May the liturgical season of Ordinary Time propel us in
our commitment in having such a convictional faith
that we advance the cause of Christ and the Church
that ministers in His name

TIME
The holidays are well behind us; the year
stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it
be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today’s
Gospel, it will be “a year acceptable to the Lord.”
And Jesus surely didn’t mean only the next three
hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that
time.
When Jesus announced the “arrival” of God’s
favor, it was a message for all time, for every year.
Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the
people gathered with solemnity to hear God’s word
as though for the first time. They listened, and
then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet
said, “Today is holy . . . do not be sad, and do not
weep.”
The “year acceptable to the Lord” is this year.
The day that is “holy” is this day. The time to listen
is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort
of day? God’s help is always here. What you do
with each day can be holy and acceptable to the
Lord if you but listen to and act on God’s word.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Saturday’s feast of the Presentation is a day
for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy
require candles? In the first years of the church,
worship was often at night, and candles and
torches were carried from place to place within
the worship space as needed. Candles were also a
mark of festivity and hospitality when people
gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in
large buildings with thick walls and dark
corners. But even after gaslight and electricity,
candles were kept.
Part of the reason has to do with the warm,
clean light of a candle’s flame. Candles are a
good sign of the partnership of God and
creation: wax made by bees, gathered and
fashioned by human hands into something
beautiful and useful. In order for the light to
shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it
is pouring itself out so that the light can flood
into the world. The candle of baptism, placed
into our hands, and carried again and again,
speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you
would save your life, you must lose it. You must
pour your life out like Christ so that you may be
filled with the light of his love.

Happy Feast of St. John Bosco: On January 31st, the
Church celebrates the feast day of St. John Bosco. The
patron of all youth, John Bosco worked tirelessly for the
good of his students and the youth of his community, nurturing in them a deep passion for life well-lived in union
with the Lord and our Blessed Mother. May he inspire in
us that same passion today and always!
"Let us serve the Lord with holy cheerfulness." -St. John Bosco

celebrate the 10:30am and 12:30pm
Masses. He asked Father Davis for
this opportunity to come and thank
the parishioners of Little Flower for
their constant support for his parish
of Saint John Bosco. Father Davis,
meanwhile, will be going over to cover for two Masses at
Saint John Bosco, so that Father Juan Carlos will be free
to be here with us on that day. Thanks to everyone who
brings food and supplies for the weekly support of Saint
John Bosco!

throughout the year. You bring a dessert, Father will provide the coffee. It will be a chance to chat,
socialize, dream about parish life, and have a delightful
visit over dessert and coffee at the rectory house. The

for ten parishioners at a time. Call Maria Elena Chialastri
to secure your space today!
