CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is celebrated on the second
and the fourth Sundays of the month at the 10:00am and the
4:00pm liturgies. Children ages 4 yrs to 8 yrs.
are invited to gather in the Daily Mass Chapel
during the liturgy to listen to and participate in
the Liturgy of the Word in a way that is relevant
to their young lives. They return to their family
before the celebration of the Eucharist. No
registration is necessary.
Young Adult Ministry
YOUNG ADULT STUDY All young adults are invited to attend
our "Catholicism series" by Fr. Robert Barron. We meet in the
St. Michael Hall every Monday from 7-8:30pm. Join us for
some fellowship and fun while learning more about your faith.
The New Roman Missal
COMMUNION, CONT. Last week we discussed the
Lord’s Prayer and the reasons it remains the same.
There are some changes to the priest’s parts. He’ll
introduce the Lord’s Prayer with these words: “At
the Savior’s command/ and formed by divine
teaching/we dare to say: (and we all pray: OUR
FATHER…)
At Mass, we pray the Lord’s Prayer differently from any other
time. Following the last petition, “deliver us from evil”, comes
a prayer said by the priest alone, called the embolism. This
short prayer continues the final petition, and adds a plea for
peace and tranquility. The words of the embolism (still said
only by the priest) will sound like this with the revised translation. “Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously
grant peace in our day, that, by the help of your mercy, we
may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we
await the blessed hope and coming of our Savior, Jesus
Christ. And our acclamation remains the same: For the kingdom, the power….. So, instead of asking protection “from all
anxiety” as he does now, the priest will pray that we be “safe
from all distress.” The prayer intends to address the circumstances that cause distress, not the internal feeling of anxiety.
Instead of saying “we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our
Savior, Jesus Christ,” the priest will say, “we await the blessed
hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.” This is an
example of how the revised translation seeks to renew many of
the scriptural references contained in these prayers. Here, the
words echo the letter of St. Paul to Titus (2:3), which affirms
that Christ has come, and that we await the blessed hope of his
return. Christ is our hope. We await his coming – even when
we don’t feel so joyful.

Inclusive Ministries
INAUGURAL WHITE MASSES IN THE DIOCESE OF RICHMOND
Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo invites you to attend one of the
Inaugural White Masses honoring the giftedness of individuals
with disabilities.
The Masses will bring together all Catholics of good will who
have special needs and those who work to support them. The
Masses have the designation of white because of that color’s
connection to Baptism. “By reason of their baptism, all Catholics are equal in dignity in the sight of god and have the same
divine calling”
Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parishioners are invited to participate in the White Mass in the Eastern Vicariate at the Church
of the Resurrection, Portsmouth on October 30th at 5:00pm
with Msgr. Walter Barrett presiding.
SPRED (Special Religious Education) invites you to consider
becoming a “helper catechist” to a special friend this year. We
currently have additional friends who have expressed an interest in
participating in a new group, and we need helper catechists to walk
the journey with them. SPRED is designed to form small adult
faith communities into which adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities are welcomed. This ministry provides a way for
the participants to encounter God in community, in a manner that
is appropriate to their gifts.
Please consider whether the Lord is calling you to offer the gift of
yourself in this ministry. Contact Dave Dwyer at 817-5960 or
Christa Blomstrom at 595-0385 ext. 119 for more details.
Do you have a child with special
needs or know someone who may
want to participate in our BREATHE
Respite night? Call now to make your
child’s reservation for our next BREATHE fun night! For
more information or to register, call Christa at the parish office
or e-mail [email protected].

Virtue of the Month for October - Studiousness
Studiousness shares the same root as “study,” but this is not a virtue only for students. Studiousness is
the virtue that helps us to filter out information that does not support our journey toward heaven. More
than in any other age, we have information available to us, and more than that, it is frequently forced
upon us in unprecedented volume in advertisement and media communication. Much of this information diverts us from serious reflection upon our lives and where we stand with God and with our
neighbor. It becomes difficult to focus our minds on the serious things of life when there are so many
lighter topics to consider that require very little mental or physical effort. Saint Thomas Aquinas taught
that curiosity about things which do not involve us is one of the greatest offenders of the virtue of studiousness. How often we want to know “what she said” or “why his did that” or “why they weren’t at this
or that place.” Rather, he exhorts us to focus our minds on the gospel truths, to be involved in Bible
studies and reading and prayer and conversations that help us to renew our minds, so that we can conform our lives to those truths.
Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your minds.
