waar de duiven bijna gans het traject over de zee vliegen!

THE HARDEST RACE IN THE WORLD
Finale Derby Arona - battle
against of the forces of
nature
The end of March means for the
one-loft-racing following all eyes on
the final of one of the most famous
in this genre, The Derby Arona
Tenerife. For the 9th time already
organized on the Spanish Canary
Islands, far off the coast of Africa.
Probably one of the toughest of
them all, a battle across the open
ocean, racing from island to island
with hardly orientation points along
the route. For those who live and
race pigeons in countries like
Taiwan, the UK and Ireland, Malta,
Scandinavian countries, and even in
parts of Holland, have learned that
our feathered friends have to do
their at most with the forces of
nature. In this year’s finale, the
racers for once weren’t confronted
with blowing head winds. A sudden
appearing hard blowing back see
wind chased them towards home
base,
under
further
excellent
conditions, still making it a hard
race after all.
The Derby Arona team, owner José
Ledesma and his co workers where
making sure no chances where
taking in the preparation toward a
marvelous final event. The whole
preparation period is transparent
towards
the
public
eye
and
contestants. Live streaming footage
of the liberation of the racers during
training races, live arrivals and even
the marking of the birds for the final
race was broadcasted live on
internet. Birds from all continents
where flown in for this international
event, from Australia, America and
Europe where brought into the
country to participate this huge
challenged across the open seas.
The birds live in excellent lofts with
lots of fresh air and a perfectly
taking care of by the loft managers.
The many visitors are in fact always
stunned by the perfect condition the
birds are in, which can be delivered
to the lofts as from April until
October every year. The intense
training program starts yearly in
December with short trainings from
the main island until a maximum of
60 km. As from January the
preparation program will proceed
with a foursome of short see
trainings from a vessel, onto a
maximum of 30 km offshore.
From that point on, the serious
heavy part of the competition takes
off, the first full race across the
open see from island to island. Also
this means the first of three ‘Hot
Spot’ car races taking place. At the
first Hot Spot 800 well prepared
youngsters made it to the start of
the 100 km open see race from
Gran Canaria to Tenerife. In total
four times the island of Gran
Canaria
would
serve
as
the
liberation site for two Hot Spot
races, plus another two training
races. The first Hot Sport was to be
won by German sport friend Josef
Land and the second race by Dutch
one-loft-racing
specialists
Hok
Reijnen. Last mentioned was to be
the most outstanding name in the
whole
competition,
with
top
positions from the first training until
the final race. At the semi final race,
the first race with two ‘island hops’
of 100 km open see, from the island
Fuerteventura still brought 265
experienced and well trained top
birds to the start. Also in this race of
210km,
with
again
perfect
conditions and a Northern wind
blowing, resulted in a group of 12
birds who finished making an
average speed of 1450 mpm. The
winner of this flock in this last
Hotspot again was one of Hok
Reijnen, having two birds in this top
group. As the ace bird of the Hot
spot races ‘Frysian Valour’ belonging
to Sjaak Buwalda was crowned.
And then came the final race
planned on the 26th of march.
Weather predictions where optimal
with a soft backwind blowing from
the
North
east,
for
the
approximately 300 km race across
open see, also starting from the
island of Fuerteventura. Liberation
of the 200 finalists was taking place
at 07.45 local time with a fast take
off in the right direction. Two days
prior to the race the marking and
basketting of the finalists was to be
followed live streaming on internet,
with all birds one by one being
presented to the audience on
camera. The wind blowing that day
unpredictably changed from a soft
into a harsh back wind, most
probably blowing the racers way off
course. It took until 12.15 until the
first two birds arrived, and ‘Rom
555’ passing the finish line first for
the grand victory. Her owners Team
Yavhé & Oliveira, local pigeon men
from the Canary Island groups,
where over the hill with joy with this
so important win plus the big cash
prize of €25,000.-. The brother
partnership Vieberink from Holland
where the proud numbers 2., with
their ‘Elisa’. With five arrivals in the
top-10 it where foremost the Dutch
who proved to be best suited for
these harsh conditions. At 12.21 is
was
‘Bloedneus’
of
Team
Wegrestaurant Napoleon taking the
third position. Hok Reijnen showed
great class finishing 4. with their
‘Morlana’ and their second topper on
10., the only participants with two
arrivals in the finale.
