Texto: Damián González Duart Fotos: Archivo T abarca is a small Mediterranean island located around ten to twelve kilometres from the coast of Alicante. It measures around 1,800 metres long by a maximum of 400 metres wide, and it is a site of tourist pilgrimages, especially during the vacation months. More than an island, it is actually a tiny archipelago made up of Tabarca along with the islets of La Cantera, La Galera and La Noa. The island is made of limestone deposited over volcanic remains. Tabarca has a fascinating nature preserve with an outstanding range of marine fauna including sea bass, conger eels and gilthead. Plus, back in 1995 it was declared a special bird protection zone by the European Union. In accordance with an urban planning scheme dating from the 18th century, a city was built following a perfect scale model, surrounded by impressive walls which are for the most part very well preserved. The city is entered through three main gateways: San Rafael, which faces eastward, San Miguel which looks westward, and the San Gabriel gateway, with views of the city of Alicante and which leads to a low rounded rock cliff which is called “the old port” by natives. However, what draws visitors’ attention the most, due to its monumentality, is the Baroque church which soars over the totally flat plain of the island, and the walled complex in the western part of the island, which is the inhabited part. The houses are low-lying, and the only tall buildings are the aforementioned church and the lighthouse. The cuisine on Tabarca is truly worth sampling. In certain restaurants on the island, some of the tastiest morsels can be savoured when they are in season, such as jig-caught grilled squid. You also have to try the fantastic local fish stew, which comes in two courses: the fish, which is eaten first, following in the fishermen’s tradition, and then the rice in which it was cooked. Tabarca’s current name was bestowed by Charles II in 1768 in memory of the Tunisian island of Tabarka, a former Spanish possession and the provenance of the earliest settlers of this island in Alicante. These settlers were in fact 300 prisoners, most of them from Genoa, who were held in captivity in Tunis and were rescued by the King of Spain with the intention of repopulating this deserted island that the Berbers used to use as a home base for their raids on Alicante’s coast. Before this period, it was known as Illa de Sant Pau (Island of Saint Paul ) or Illa Plana (Flat Island). Tourists prefer to visit it chiefly in the summer months, but the heat can be suffocating then, making autumn the perfect season to visit the island, enjoy its beauty in the dwindling, melancholy light projected over the Mediterranean sea. Tabarca radiates peace and tranquillity, and its inhabitants welcome visitors since tourism is the islanders’ main economic activity. The island has a population of 125 people, a figure that may shortly multiply due to the urban developments currently being planned for the island. shmagazine 014 NÚMERO 3 - OCTUBRE 2007 Entrevista Interview ANGÉLICA SUCH CONSELLERA DE TURISMO “La Comunidad Valenciana es un destino turístico que puede satisfacer cualquier demanda” ANGÉLICA SUCH ES LA MÁXIMA RESPONSABLE POLÍTICA EN MATERIA DE TURISMO DE LA COMUNITAT VALENCIANA. Estamos hablando de I+D+I también. No veo ningún déficit. Textos: Guillermo Gómez-Ferrer Fotos: José Jordan 015 shmagazine 016 NÚMERO 3 - OCTUBRE 2007 Entrevista Interview “THE COMMUNITY OF VALENCIA IS A TOURISM DESTINATION THAT IS CAPABLE OF SATISFYING ANY DEMAND” ANGÉLICA SUCH IS THE POLITICIAN IN CHARGE OF TOURISM IN THE COMMUNITY OF VALENCIA. NEWLY APPOINTED BY PRESIDENT FRANCISCO CAMPS AFTER THE MAY ELECTIONS, THIS BENIDORM NATIVE WAS BORN IN 1964 AND HOLDS A DEGREE IN LAW. SHE CONVEYS PASSION, DEVOTION AND AN AIM TO REACH CONSENSUS IN AN EFFORT TO SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THE COMMUNITY OF VALENCIA FAR BEYOND ITS BORDERS. AFTER HER FIRST PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE COURTS, SHE WELCOMED US IN HER OFFICE ON AVENDIA DE ARAGÓN, WANTING TO EXPLAIN TO US THE CHALLENGES SHE IS FACING IN THIS NEW STAGE OF HER LIFE. What are the goals that your Ministry has set for this legislature? The goals we have set are determined by the change that is currently taking place in the demand, changes that are happening rather quickly. We want to keep and increase our leadership, and to accomplish this we are planning to follow a series of avenues of action that will enable us to reach tourists directly. What do these general avenues of action consist of? We have a plan for tourism spaces that I think is very important; through this plan, 21 tourism spaces throughout the Community have been identified. And what does each space consist of? Drawing up a plan for tourism spaces is required by the law on tourism, in which 21 spaces are identified with common characteristics, with general guidelines for all 21 as well as several guidelines that are unique to each space. It will be highly useful for local bodies. It is a very ambitious plan in terms of its content, but this is only a very general and brief summary of it. What are the other avenues of action? The comprehensive quality plan which expires in 2008 and has yielded wonderful results. We are going to extend it to last from 2009 to 2013. All of this is closely linked to training in the sector, which we think is crucial in order to keep talking about quality and competitiveness. We are also discussing RD&I. And one plan that I think is very important is the one on positioning the Community of Valencia. How? As a brand? As a location? We want to position the Community to ensure that it is present in all the media, both domestically and internationally. Here I can state that we’re going to kick it off with a study on the current status. To do this, we’re going to analyse the outbound market; how they see us, where we are. This information is fundamental in order to use it as the basis for a plan on our positioning. Another very important plan is the one on the prestige of the coastline, because I think it is only fair and it fits in with our reality. We have a beach, a coastline, infrastructures and facilities that are magnificent. The coastline has got a bad rap in the press in recent months. It’s unjustified defeatism. It’s not true. What can you tell us about major events? Is there a predetermined strategy? We are going to work along these lines because these events are positive for the Community, since they entail recognition for the Community with its ability to host this type of competition. They are of unquestionable importance in terms of tourism profitability, image and promoting the Community, and they allow us to enter markets that are very difficult to break into via traditional channels, such as the Asian or US market. This allows the whole world to find out about us. On the other hand, they are also important because of the number of visitors we welcome. We have a clear goal: that visitors who come for the event travel around all three provinces in the Community and thus ensure that these beneficial effects are spread around the entire Community. We are going to try to achieve this, and we have to reach these people before they come so that they are aware of everything that the Community offers. What does the Community of Valencia offer? De tot (which in Valencian means “a little bit of everything”). We’ve got everything. I would stress that the Community of Valencia is a tourist destination which has such a vast variety of activities that I think that, even though it may sound very ambitious, I really believe it: it can meet any de- shmagazine NÚMERO 3 - OCTUBRE 2007 mand. We have beach-and-sun tourism, rural tourism, urban tourism, golf, congresses, gourmet tourism, a little bit of everything. We have such a diversified range of options that I think you would be hard put to find another vacation destination where you can find something that you can’t find someplace or another in the community. Our obligation is to convey this fact. Precisely sun-and-beach tourism has been disparaged by the press at times. What is your opinion about sun-and-beach tourism for the Valencian economy? What does this kind of tourism in the Community of Valencia offer that other destinations don’t? I think that it’s the star of our tourism. It’s something real. We have a privileged climate and coastline. We have excellent hotel occupancy figures. It’s a reality not just in the Community of Valencia but also in other destinations. People are still seeking sun-and-beach. It’s a reality that’s out there. What does the Community of Valencia have? In addition to this coastline, to the quality of our beaches – we have around 75 certificates of quality and quality management – we also have these beaches’ geographic proximity to other options. For example, you’re in Benidorm, and Guadalest is just ten minutes away, which is involved in a different and totally distinct type of tourism, and this holds true anywhere in the Community of Valencia. From rural tourism you can also reach the beach easily. It’s a possibility we offer tourists that other destinations can’t. What are we lacking? Nothing. I mean, I tell things as I see them. I don’t see any shortcomings. What can we improve? I think we have to improve everything. We have to keep working on everything. Keep the excellent stuff good and improve on it if possible, and improve what needs improvement. Going back to the plan you just told us about, are offices to promote Valencia going to be opened? We now have a tourist info office opening in Brussels, which is scheduled to open before the end of the year, plus two more offices but we haven’t yet decided where. We will take into account the outbound destinations because that is reasonable, and out to coherency with our working system we will hold the meetings with the sector in order to choose the venues. I think it will be a very positive step. What would you suggest for someone coming to our Community? And don’t say everything because it’s impossible! (LAUGHING) I’d tell them to stay long enough to see as much as possible. THIS PUSH FOR INTERNATIONAL SPORTS CONFIRMS VALENCIA AS ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE DESTINATIONS, AND HELPS ENORMOUSLY TO PROJECT A WORLD-CLASS IMAGE OF THE CITY BEYOND SPAIN’S BORDERS. he history of the “romance” between Valencia and sports can be considered a tad farfetched. In 2003, the New Zealand city of Auckland hosted the 31st edition of the America’s Cup, the most prestigious sailing competition n the world, with the local team as the T clear favourite. But history can be capricious at times, and what seemed to be an easy sail through the sea for the New Zealanders ended up with an easy victory for an unknown Swiss team. And herein lies the problem: the rules of the America’s Cup say that the winning team will host the next event in its waters, and Switzerland has no waters! This is the crucial turning point in the story: Valencia presented its candidacy along with other cities to host the 32nd edition of the America’s Cup, and after a long selection process, it was ultimately chosen. Valencia has been primping for four shmagazine NÚMERO 3 - OCTUBRE 2007 years to host the most important event: it has totally revamped its port, significantly improved access to the area and managed to inculcate an interest in sailing (a minor sport in our country) in its natives. Finally, the much-awaited month of June 2007 arrived, the date marked on the calendars of all sailing lovers the world over, and the 32nd America’s Cup finally arrives. After several different elimination rounds, the Swiss and New Zealander team once again compete in the final round, and for the second time in a row, the “sealess” team steals the victory. For a few days, all sights were set on Valencia. Thousands of visitors from five continents flocked to the city for a live look at the competition, and they got a firsthand look at the im- pressive change in the city. Plus, we should not ignore the millions of television viewers who watched the competition from their homes, many of whom were hearing the name Valencia for the first time. They took For a few days, all sights were set on Valencia away a fantastic image of that all the media broadcast and all the visitors attending the sailing competition have shared. Yet, of all the images from the 32nd edition of the America’s Cup, there is one that particularly captures our attention: the port brim- ming with foreign tourists and local visitors alike, all bursting with jubilance. And in this festive atmosphere, the most jubilant of all are the Valencian fans decked out with flags of the Swiss team – all of Valencia supported the Europeans. The main reason: their hope that the city would once again host the next edition of the competition. Valencia’s residents want to keep enjoying the sailing competition, not to mention the fact that the outstanding infrastructures, the seamless organisation and the peerless response of the Valencian people had more than fulfilled the expectations of the event organisers. ACM, the company charged with organising the event, negotiated with different European cities but ultimately chose to hold the competition in 025 shmagazine 026 NÚMERO 3 - OCTUBRE 2007 Valencia. A dream come true: 22 days after the end of the 32nd edition the agreement confirming Valencia as the site of the 33rd edition of the America’s Cup was publicised, and this time there will be no need to wait four years since the event is scheduled to be held in 2009. Valencia had managed to gain worldwide fame thanks to this event, plus it yielded excellent economic results: according to a recent study by the Ministry of Tourism, it left 3,150 million euros in the city, led to the creation of a total of xxx jobs. Plus, the competition channelled more than 600 million euros into Valencia for infrastructures, which are now completed and will serve to improve the quality of life of the city’s inha- Pasión por el deporte Passion for sports The race track can be viewed as a perfect postcard of Valencia bitants and all its visitors. Additionally, the records of tourist inflows have only kept up steady growth in recent years. In the final stage of the America’s Cup all expectations were blown away, leaving record occupancy rates in Valencia that, according to data from the official tourism bureau, Turismo Valencia, will lead to a final yearly figure of over two million tourists for 2007. This rising trend will no doubt be sustained in the forthcoming years with the cit- y’s calendar, which is loaded with first-rate international sports events that will help to multiply the city’s image all over the planet. The first date is scheduled for 7th to 9th March 2008, when Valencia will host the 12th IAAF World Indoor Championships, a must-see for all athletics lovers which will be held in the newly remodelled Luis Puig sports hall. The spring will bring the first pre-regattas of the next edition of the America’s Cup, and in the middle of summer (24th August) one of the top sporting events of the year will come to Valencia: the streets of the city will serve as the backdrop for the European Grand Prix race, a sport with legions of fans which will place Valencia on TV screens all over the world. According to data from this season, around 500 million spectators follow each of the 18 grand prix championships. These figures are comparable to those for events like the Olympics or the football World Cup. The race track can be viewed as a perfect postcard of Valencia, as the racing cars will drive through the City of Arts and Sciences on a spectacular ring route that will join up with the bay of Valencia and the new marine at the port, where more than 300 mega-yachts will be waiting. Another important date is the motorcycle Grand Prix of the Community of Valencia, which has been held in Cheste since 1999 with excellent figures on popular acceptance. One figure: three and a half months before the Grand Prix this year (scheduled for early November) all tickets were already sold out, and there were predictions for outlays of around 45 million euros during the weekend of the event thanks to the influx of around 240,000 fans to watch the race live. shmagazine 028 Cultura Culture NÚMERO 3 - OCTUBRE 2007 Andalucía: El encierro SOROLLA vuelve a casa BANCAJA INAUGURA SU NUEVO CENTRO CULTURAL CON LA AMBICIOSA EXPOSICIÓN, “SOROLLA. His paintings perfectly capture the luminosity and colour of the Mediterranean, elements that captivated the world back in the early 20th century. His fame was achieved after he travelled all around Europe, mainly to England and France. After this, an exhibition was held in Paris showcasing more than five hundred works, which showered unheard of international acclaim upon him, leading his paintings to become famous all over Europe and America. In 1909 he showed his works in New York to unprecedented success, with works like “Sol de tarde” and “Nadadores” among many others. His works were also exhibited in the City Art Museum of Saint Louis and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1911. This show takes viewers on a tour around the different regions of Spain, portraying the local customs and the peoples of the time. Thus, when visiting the exhibition, spectators can see paintings about Castile such as “La fiesta del pan”; about Seville, like “Semana Santa: Los Nazarenos”; about Navarra, like “Concejal del Roncal”; and about Valencia, like “Las grupas”. Many people regard this as Sorolla’s best work. Indeed, he spent the last eight years of his career working on these murals, always with his sights set on the goal of their being shown in Spain. However, this was ultimately impossible despite the direct intervention of King Alphonse XIII. In recent years, the murals were taken down and subjected to a state-of-the-art technolo- gical restoration process with reversible, harmless actions. The paintings were shipped from the United States in an airplane specifically fitted out for this purpose. It is also worth noting that this is the first time that the pieces by this Valencian painter have been taken down and removed from the US. “Sorolla. Visions of Spain” will officially open Bancaja’s new culture centre. This new building, measuring more than 10,000 square metres, will be one of the city’s largest culture centres. As a result, Vicente Dasí inherited the title, whereupon he decided to undertake a total overhaul of the building, resulting in a basically ornamental façade featuring a clear eclecticism that combines different styles such as Rococo, Neo-Imperial and Chinese motifs. Inside, the Gothic windows on the courtyard were replaced by balconies featuring figures that represent the arts, trade and agriculture. In addition, period furniture was also purchased, such as the well-known set of furniture from Dresden with Saxon porcelain applications from the so-called Sala de Porcelain. After years of construction, the newly-reformed building was officially opened in 1867. His passion for cooking dates back to his childhood, when at the age of 13 he was already sure that his future profession would be a chef, whereupon he moved to the coast of Valencia from his hometown of Badajoz in order to work in the restaurant busi- ness. After gaining experience in his everyday work in restaurants and hotels all around the country, he arrived at the Melià Valencia Palace fifteen years ago until he became the cornerstone of the complicated workings of its large kitchen. Juan Antonio claims to have no particular predilection for any specific food, but he does stress his passion for rice dishes and points to the role of vegetables in modern cookery. He also states that “all foods are good, but you have to know how to use them and treat them lovingly.” The guests at the Melià Valencia Palace can savour his dishes in both the hotel’s “healthy buffet” and in its “Albufera” restaurant located on the ground floor. PAMPER YOUR SKIN City pollution and the stress you handle day after day, along with foundation, powder and other cosmetic products that you apply on our face all make your skin suffer from the effects of your vertiginous pace of life for most of the year. After a long day at work, the exhaustion you feel from your work and household duties, coupled with the pollution that sticks to your skin almost without your realising it, snuff out the luminosity of your skin, giving you an exhausted and at times almost ill look. As a matter of fact, your skin is filled with nerve endings that are in direct contact with your brain, turning them into a natural high-precision alarm system that warns you when something is amiss. To make sure this does not happen and to ensure that your skin glows just like any other time of day, it is very important for you to set aside ten minutes night to pamper and shower attention on your facial skin. Begin your ritual by removing make-up with a mild cleansing cream suitable for your skin type. With clean hands, massage your face gently in ascending circles to make the make-up remover penetrate into your pores and eliminate all the impurities that have accumulated on your skin during the course of the day. Next, remove what remains of the product using a cotton ball, and rinse your face with plenty of lukewarm water. After carefully drying, apply a refreshing skin toner to complete the cleansing process. Before going to bed, and as the last step in your everyday beauty ritual, use a nutritional night cream, because all your internal tissues regenerate as you sleep. In addition to caring for your skin with the appropriate products, to have glowing skin you must eat a balanced diet, drink lots of water and sleep eight hours a day, as well as exercise regularly to ensure that your skin is oxygenated. Alex Vidal From 11th to 14th September, one of the trade fair pavilions in Valencia hosted the fashion shows in Valencia’s third Fashion Week. A total of 26 brands and 150 designers attended this event and managed to delight an audience dying to discover the latest from designers like Alex Vidal, Tonuca, Hannibal Laguna, Carlos Haro and Ion Fiz. BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GTC. FAITHFUL TO THE LEGEND There are manufacturers in the automobile market that need little introduction, and one of them is Bentley, whose legend is still growing over the years thanks to models such as the Continental GTC. This convertible faithfully follows the British interpretation of this type of car, even though the brand only has its roots on the British isles. The manufacturer has spoiled us with sublime luxury products, featuring elegance as their main value, and this coupe is no exception. It is true that it has inherited many features from its siblings, yet it has also remained faithful to the brand’s legend, thus contributing to taking yet another step forward along the pathway of excellence, as this manufacturer does not take a single step that might “tarnish” its history. The inside of the Continental GTC boasts supreme luxury. Suffice it to list the presence of fine materials such as wood and leather, treated in the traditional manner, to realise that we are at the peak of automotive elegance. With a top speed of 312 km/h, a sophisticated four-wheel drive system, a 12cylinder engine featuring cutting-edge technology, advanced wheel suspension and a rigid body structure, the Continental GTC shows all the stateliness, high performance and dynamic handling of the Continental GT. With this model, the convertible segment is witnessing the arrival of a veritable Lord, which stands out for offering four comfortable seats, something that differentiates it from the competition. Its levels of quality, inherited from the longstanding top of the line Bentley tradition, put it at the peak of convertible four-seaters, as it can transport its occupants towards a dimension brimming with glamour and comforts which are so easy to get used to and after which everything else seems paltry.
