“Make love your aim.” - 1 Corinthians 14:1 “Love never ends. ”
T he first reading sounds so pedestrian, but it was a watershed moment in the history of religion! It represents the beginning of a revolution that took place in all religions about this time (400 BC +/-). All the literature, lore, history, law, rituals, you name it--ALL of the sacred treasury of a people was placed in the hands of any follower. Before, it had been the property of the priestly caste, only. So, when you read that first reading, you should really feel the earth shaking beneath you! Holiness began to be something that all human beings could begin to pursue for themselves--in all the religions. Out of this, came a devotion to Torah, the rise of a class of scholars of the law, whose motto was, "the point of the study of the Sacred Text is to know how to live--if the life isn't changed, the study is useless." In the Gospel, this week, we get Luke's memory of Jesus' "introduction to the world," and unlike John's memory last week, of the wedding at Cana, Luke remembers that Jesus opened his ministry reading and studying the Sacred Text (in this case, Isaiah), and we see Jesus embodying that idea that one has to live what one studies or study is pointless. The rest of Luke's Gospel will be an illustration of how Jesus chose to "live out" the Text He read that day. We as His disciples are challenged on every page of this Gospel to live out that same Sacred Text in our lives, too. - Fr. - Padre Bill Axe -Mykhail J. T oday's readings from the Old Testament recount how the Israelite people planned to rebuild the city of Jerusalem after coming back from the exile. They are excited about being home, but scared at the immense task before them. They are told by Nehemiah to have faith in God and in each other and it will get done. The wonderful thing is, they did rebuild the City and it stands even today. We have embarked on a similar task, to fix and enhance our Church. I know that you have been hearing announcements asking for money and some of you are a bit confused. We have started working on the outside and hopefully you will see changes soon. Then we need to make improvements to the inside. You will be hearing more about this in the near future. We need everyone's help to make this happen. Please look at what you might be able to give now and down the road. Every little bit helps and your offering means a lot, no matter how small. January 30— Spanish Eucharistic Ministry "NOBODY CAN DO EVERYTHING BUT EVERYBODY CAN DO SOMETHING" What an awesome Christmas Day celebration we had in the church hall on Christmas Day. Our guests felt the love, caring and compassion that was so alive and thriving in the air. You were the difference for them and they were aware of being treated with dignity and respect. For many of our guests this is the one day of the year that people seem to be kind to them and they become important visible people in the eyes of world once again. The atmosphere in the hall is so different on this one day we'd like to bottle this up and spread It around everyday forever. We have been asked "how many did we feed on Christmas" to us the importance is what we have never been asked "how many guests did we touch and make a difference for on Christmas this year?" The number is not the focus or us the mission of touching lives and making and being the difference as hope is being planted, love is being sowed and spirits and souls are being nourished by the grace of God and those who have chosen to do their God works through prayers, donating their time, talent and treasure before, during and after the dinner is what is important and matters. MINISTRY Pope Francis Corner Espacio para el Papa Francisco Reflections from Laudato Si "Modernity has been marked by an excessive anthropocentrism which today, under another guise, continues to stand in the way of shared understanding and of any effort to strengthen social bonds. The time has come to pay renewed attention to reality and the limits it imposes; this in turn is the condition for a more sound and fruitful development of individuals and society. An inadequate presentation of Christian anthropology gave rise to a wrong understanding of the relationship between human beings and the world. Often, what was handed on was a Promethean vision of mastery over the world, which gave the impression that the protection of nature was something that only the faint-hearted cared about. Instead, our “dominion” over the universe should be understood more properly in the sense of responsible stewardship” (116). St. Agatha Trivia Did you know? Setting boundaries fosters healthy relationships Estableciendo límites We create boundaries to keep our lives in order, for example many adults separate personal and professional relationships. Trusted adults can help teach children to do the same. Boundaries are essential in the foundation of relationships, and children should be comfortable expressing where they draw their own lines. “No means no” is easy to say in theory, but it should be respected in practice by your kids and their friends, teachers and other adults. Teach your kids how to explore their own comfort zones and give them time to tell you about their experiences. Open communication helps them understand that setting boundaries is part of life. Fr. Bill Axe, o.ss.t. P.O. Box 5719 Baltimore, MD 21282-0719 Padre Bill Axe, o.ss.t. P.O.
