constantemente soluciones inovativas
le permite crecer junto con sus clientes.
Kaba destaca en ofrecer durabilidad
en las inversiones, característica que la
convierte en un socio de confianza.
Pero el espíritu de empresa de Kaba
también es esencial para los accionistas.
Kaba se siente orgullosa de tener
accionistas que ven su inversión como
un compromiso a largo plazo. Sobre
este tema, le recomendamos leer en la
página 6/7 la entrevista a Creed Künzle,
uno de los grandes accionistas de
Kaba.
In a very short time, Kaba has grown into an international consortium for security technology. It has con-
quered the leading position in technology development. The article
Trendsetter with «Total Access» illustrates how Kaba made its
way to the top.
Kaba is a company with entrepreneurial spirit. This means
that Kaba cultivates its customers with a long-term perspective,
creating relationships of mutual confidence. By continually
offering innovative solutions, the company can grow hand in
hand with its customers. Investment in long-term objectives
is a hallmark of Kaba and makes the company a reliable partner
for its customers.
But Kaba’s entrepreneurial spirit is also important for its owners.
Kaba is proud to have owners who regard their investment as
a long-term commitment. Please read more in the interview with

Trendsetter with «Total Access»
For the past ten years, Kaba has pioneered the gradual consolidation of historically separate segments
in the markets for access control, security doors, time and attendance and enterprise data collection
under the banner of its «Total Access» strategy. This trend has embraced the entire industry in Europe.
A supply initiative has become a demand segment, which market leader Kaba wants to expand further.
It all began with the technical
possibilities provided by electronics
in the 1970s. Electronic access
control addressed the requirement
for efficient and flexible real-time
monitoring of access authorization
procedures.
Ulrich Wydler,
COO Access
Systems Europe
The new market developed
alongside the traditional market
for master key systems, something
that twenty years later proved to
have been an error of historic proportions: in the final analysis, master
key and access control systems both
fulfill the same purpose: securing
and monitoring access to and within
buildings and facilities.
The manufacturers of master
key systems ignored electronics until
1982, when Kaba introduced the

world’s first mechatronic cylinder
lock, the Kaba nova. Fifteen years
later, every supplier’s range included
a mechatronic system. In the meantime, Kaba was already developing
the chip key, which was first marketed
in Switzerland in 1993 under the
name Kaba elostar. Five years later,
Kaba introduced yet another pioneering product – Kaba elolegic, the
first transponder key. The 13.56 MHz
technology, which is licensed worldwide under the brand name Legic,
is one of the core technical elements
for the consolidation of master key
and access control systems.
In addition to its underlying
function, the transponder key can
also be used for verification, for
instance access control, time and
attendance, and the collection of
enterprise data, as well as credit
payment system for vending
machines and cashless transactions.
Conversely, digital cylinder locks
and door hardware pave the way
to master key systems for electronic
access control. It has recently
become possible for an employee
ID with an integrated RFID chip to
release a cylinder lock or door han-
dle, and keys can be programmed
at access control terminals. The
newest “Virtual Networking” technology uses RFID to connect cylinders
and locks of non-wired doors with an
access control system. Omitting the
wiring means considerable savings
for applications without the highestlevel security requirements, especially in the replacement market or
for installations in existing buildings
and facilities.
But there is more: the segment
for electronically controlled security
doors is increasingly overlapping the
market for access control and master key systems. The trend towards
decentralized intelligence and the
FORUM
miniaturization of door managers
easily allows doors to be fitted with
access control systems, at the factory or later on site. At the opposite
end of the complexity scale are
corporate-wide projects that implement a customized mix of locking
and access control systems built
around standard databases.
“Authorization management”
and “Business Process Management” are the magic words in this
case. They enable large firms to
generate significant savings by using
IT-controlled, auditable workflows
when assigning authorizations,
standardized verification media, and
common access to the personnel
database for all relevant applications. The integrated and contiguously compatible product range
from master key system through
time and attendance to data collection increased the complexity of
such systems exponentially. Customers benefit from solutions individually tailored to their requirements,

increased migration flexibility, greater
ease of use and considerable savings in the long run.
As a pioneer and trendsetter,
Kaba has significantly influenced this
customer-friendly and market-oriented industry initiative with its own
innovations. The company is the only
supplier to consolidate all technologies in the domains of identification,
locking technology, door technology,
access control and data collection –
in brief: «Total Access».

well financed. Of course, there is
also a large goodwill burden, as
reflected by the low equity capital.
But this should not lead us to ignore
that the company is sound at the
core.
The company is also positioning
itself well in the market. This means
that the company has an interesting
and innovative product range for the
right market segments, which enables
it to develop interesting markets.
SU What makes Kaba an attractive
share?
CK Kaba is attractive because of its
long-term orientation. Through four
FORUM
generations, our family has shown
that we subscribe to an entrepreneurial philosophy. We have always
left the major part of our earnings
in the firm. That’s how we built this
company. I won’t sell my Kaba
shares. And neither will my children,
for that matter. The reason is that
we are interested in long-term development; our outlook is entrepreneurial and will remain so in the future.
We don’t think short-term measures
are a good thing.
SU How do you view the current
valuation of the share?
CK This is a question of a company’s value on the one hand
and the general development of
the stock market on the other.
Of course, I would be happy for all
shareholders if the share price
went up again. But you can’t figure
out the stock market, it’s just unpredictable.
SU Where lies the strength of the
company?
CK I’m confident that Kaba still has
potential for substantial and continuous further development. Kaba is
not a high flyer on the stock market,
a share that suddenly skyrockets
and then goes bankrupt after a couple of years. With Kaba, you can
expect continuity and sustainability
in corporate development.
As a major Kaba shareholder,
Creed Künzle believes in
long-term, substantive developments. It therefore comes as
no surprise that his family
has been holding Kaba shares
for more than four generations.
SU How do you assess the company’s prospects?
CK Kaba is number three in the
world market, that’s really not bad.
Moreover, the combination of business activities in Europe and America
certainly provides a good starting
base for constructing the future.
And Kaba is also strong as a brand.
In my opinion, one strong brand is
much better than many small ones,
as we see among some of our competitors. In other words: Kaba is in
an excellent position to continue its
successful corporate development.

In ten years of cooperation, Kaba has been addressing the specific needs of Electricité de France,
in particular at its nuclear power plant sites.
It was in 1974 that the French
government launched its nuclear
power generation program and began
the construction of its first nuclear
power stations, including Gravelines.
On 13 March 1980, the first of six
initial production units was connected to the country’s electricity grid.
Located in the French region of
Nord-Pas de Calais, the Gravelines
nuclear power station is the most
powerful one in Western Europe. It
stands on a site of over 150 ha and
in 2004, production reached an alltime high of 38.7 billion kWh.
Nuclear energy is clean, produces concentrated waste, and offers
an efficient solution to air pollution
and global warming. Along with Sweden, France’s nuclear energy policy
boasts the world’s lowest emission
rate of CO2 per GWh.
Electricité de France (EdF) fully
subscribes to a policy of sustainable
development. The Gravelines site
was awarded ISO 14001 certification
on 26 January 2004.
Security is the top priority
in nuclear power generation.
Since 1995, Kaba has maintained strong ties both with
Gravelines and the French nuclear
safety and engineering authorities
in general. For example, since 1997,
Kaba has installed over 50 Kentaur
turnstiles, as well as equipment
airlocks and access ramps for the
handicapped at Gravelines. Today,
9 of France’s 20 nuclear power
stations feature Kaba equipment.
This leaves us ample scope for
further development in the future.

Museum of the 21st century
The Museum for Contemporary Art in León, Spain – MUSAC for short – is a building
designed by architects Mansilla and Tuñón. It is a crucible of innovation and an element
of contemporary cultural activity dedicated to the present.
Most of us imagine León to
be a city with a magnificent medieval
past and a forgotten modernity.
There are similar cases throughout
“old” Europe: centers of political
decision-making and cultural wealth
that modernity has relegated to the

In 2001, the town council

The here and now, the present, is the mainstay of the new

Long-term support
The Banque de France (French Central Bank) was set up by Consul Napoleon Bonaparte
on 18 January 1800. Despite its historic roots, the Banque de France fully meets 21st century needs
thanks to its state-of-the-art infrastructure. It recently replaced 212 decentralized legacy systems
with a centralized solution.
Today, the Banque de France
forms part of the Euro system and
contributes to the development and
implementation of the unified monetary policy. From 1992 to 2001, time
and attendance recording at the
bank was ensured largely by Kaba
Benzing reader terminals and a series
of legacy systems that provided
input to customized payroll software.
Then, the REGTS (time management modernization) project was
launched in 2001. Based on the integration of systems in a SAP software
environment, REGTS had two main
data collection objectives: firstly, to replace 212 locally managed databases
with a central system and, secondly,
to achieve full automation of time

In October 2001, the Banque

Mallet in the center of Geneva’s old town, a stone’s throw away from Saint Peter’s Cathedral.
It is a highly symbolic place because the Reformation was ratified by vote here.
Maison Mallet was built in 1723
on the site of the ancient Saint
Peter’s monastery, where the inhabitants of Geneva voted for the Reformation on 21 May 1536. In a suite of
twelve rooms organized by theme,
the museum in a visitor-friendly and

Security in a historic setting
In the course of the most recent major reorganization of the Armed Forces, a decision was taken
to house the restructured Austrian Ministry of Defense close to the Donaukanal, in the historic Rossau
building, whose striking towers and battle ments characterize the Viennese cityscape.
Known locally as the “Rossauer
Kaserne” (Rossau Barracks), the
building was erected between 1864
and 1870 as a late expression of
romantic historicism inspired by the
architecture of medieval fortifications.
With the Franz Joseph Barracks
and the Arsenal, it was originally conceived as a defensive triangle against
internal unrest (and later used as
such). The barracks had room for
2,400 men and 390 horses; plus
99 officers’ quarters, 43 apartments
for married non-commissioned
officers, offices for the InspectorGeneral and a divisional and brigade
command.
Radical rebuilding was made
necessary by the complete change
of use, but the original appearance
of the listed building had to be preserved. The work mostly concerned
the interior: approximately 220 offices
and other rooms were created on
a total area of 18,800 m2. Naturally,
the Ministry of Defense had demanding requirements in terms of
security: the new master key system
had to comply with the latest international standards.
Step by step, the “Rossauer
Kaserne” is being equipped with
a Kaba elolegic master key system,
making it one of Austria’s best
protected buildings. The first phase
includes 600 cylinder locks (with
the corresponding 1,500 keys), with
a final total of approximately 1,000.
Among the first rooms to be fitted
with the locks were the offices of the
Ministry of Defense and the Chief
of Defense Staff. The Kaba locking
key system is so flexible and upgradeable that it is sure to survive
the next reorganization of the Armed
Forces . . .

The French Navy picks Kaba
It was in response to a French Navy tender submitted to suppliers of electronic locks that Kaba
first entered the French defense market.
Access at the right time and the
right place – with the right
solution at a French naval base.
Issued by the Naval Aviation
Base of Lann-Bihoué in Lorient,
the key requirements of the tender
stressed optimum security and
operating convenience. The rooms
of the marines living on the base
had to be equipped with new locks.
Following a series of negotiations,
it was finally our products that won
the day, thereby marking the first
appearance of Kaba on the scene of
the “defense lodging business”.
With an area of 800 ha and circum-
ference of 21 km, Lann-Bihoué is
one of France’s largest military bases.
The main responsibilities of the
1,600 people (including 340 civilians)
and 17 aircraft stationed at the
base involve coast guard duties
and anti-submarine missions.
In early 2005, a first “test” building
with 64 rooms was fitted out with
Oracode 660F locks, Hotelus software, and all the corresponding
IT resources. The French Navy opted
for Kaba on account of the following
features: no more hassles with
keys getting lost, time-limited access
codes, hierarchical organization of
access rights, full audit capabilities,
simplicity, and convenience.
This project will be extended
to all of the other residential buildings
on the base (500 locks). It serves
as an excellent reference for Kaba
SF2E, which fully meets the high
standards of security required by the
French defense forces.

Learning in a secure environment
Ramapo College in Mahwah, New Jersey, found a perfect solution for student dormitory safety
and security with the Kaba Solitaire and Oracode locking systems. The Peaks copy-protection
system insures access control throughout the campus.
There is more to creating a
top learning community than a wonderful setting, first-rate instructors,
and good educational resources.
As with any community, safety and
security are a high priority. Innovative
solutions from Kaba help administrators of Ramapo College simplify
access management and reduce
costs.
Ramapo provides on-campus
housing for more than 2,500 students. Kaba solutions give multi-level
access control with complete audit
capability. Students use their
ID cards to gain access to the resident hall suites from the exterior
of the building with the Kaba
Solitaire 850 magnetic card locks.
On the interior doors of the resident
hall suites that lead to students’
private quarters, Ramapo uses the
Kaba Oracode 4400. This is a
time-sensitive PIN based control.
Managing access for students
is only one part of the solution.
Every lock on campus has a keyed
cylinder. This gives the staff access
according to their job requirements.
Of course, if keys could be duplicated by users, security would be
breached. The Kaba patented key
control products guarantee that
no key can ever be duplicated with-

the administrators had hundreds
of doors installed by a variety of
manufacturers. For Kaba Peaks,
the market leader in compatibility,
this was no problem.

Zurich sets highlights
The world’s largest cities enjoy competing over the tallest building and the most imposing skyline.
Zurich does not really qualify for the skyscraper league, but it does have modern buildings to be
proud of. The elegant and transparent Sunrise Tower complex is one example.
With its 88 and 71 m high
towers, the double high-rise is the
new landmark of Zurich Nord. One
tower has 25, the other 20 floors,
with a total of approximately 2,000
workstations. Sunrise employees
will be moving from the current six
locations to the new premises.
This means much shorter communication and decision paths for
everyone.
Commissioned by a publicsector insurance organization
of the canton of Zurich, the architectural firm Atelier WW/Max Dudler
conceived a modern building, which
explores new directions both in
terms of building style and urban
planning. Master contractor Zschokke
was responsible for engineering
and construction. Three of Switzer-

worked together in a consortium
headed up by Aepli Metallbau
to create a Swiss joint venture of
impressive dimensions.
The Sunrise Tower’s doors
open automatically, both for visitors

optimal wind protection effect provide convenient entry and create
a pleasant reception area. Inside the
building, various automatic sliding

Flexible time management
for the “Meistermacher”
J. G. Anschütz GmbH & Co. KG has developed into one of the best-known manufacturers
of rifles for hunting and sport. The name rings a bell even to those who are not necessarily
biathlon fans.
An ideal fit: Benchmark achievements in sports and benchmark technology for time and
attendance management.
The slogan “Die Meistermacher”
(The champion makers), coined
in 1972, applies to this day, as the
list of world records achieved with
the company’s sport rifles bristles
with impressive entries.
In December 2004 the Ulmbased company decided to find a new
solution for its staff time management. It did not take long to identify
the software supplier Veda GmbH
from Alsdorf and Kaba Benzing as
partners. The project had demanding
time-frame constraints and was
begun immediately and flexibly. The
shift-work models presented a particular challenge. The high level of
flexibility within the company meant
that a variety of operational idiosyncrasies in the treatment of hours
worked in advance and holiday time
had to be mapped on to the system,
but this was easily solved by appropriate parametrization.
“The whole project unfolded
smoothly, and to a large extent,
this was due to the constructive and
cooperative collaboration between
staff in the IT and HR departments at
J. G. Anschütz and our people, says
Klaus Schwund, project manager for

The flexible structure has also
reduced the administrative effort
required from the time management
staff to manage master data. The

TRENDS
RRM door manager sets the trend
Long ago, in 1999, the changing demands imposed on the peripherals of access control systems
motivated Kaba to launch the first door managers with integrated Legic RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification) technology and remote data entry units. The RRM family (Remote Reader Modules) was
born, opening up new trends. Two further innovations have now been added to the product range.
RFID – the core element
of «Total Access» and
all future developments
in door management.
1999 – the impending turn
of the millennium was the source
of considerable excitement.
System landscapes were examined
to determine whether they were
millennium-proof and reengineered
if necessary. At the same time, door
technology was declared a cost
factor that needed to be minimized.
The Kaba response to the new
market requirements was the RRM
door manager range. With its
modular concept, it addresses the
need for an installation that is both
secure and flexible, as well as visually attractive. Irrespective of the
specific access requirements, a door
manager with an integrated Legic
reader is installed within the secure

area. The broad spectrum of readers
available for the external areas
ensures design appeal and full functionality.
A wide variety of contactless
readers is available today. Antennas
are designed for easy installation
in conventional light switches, directly
in the door leaf, or in wall-mounted
housings. Hands-free solutions or
concealed in-the-wall mounting for
protection against vandalism are also
possible. The existing door manager
can be upgraded with PIN code
entry and biometric verification for
enhanced security without modifying
the installation itself. As a precursor
of mechatronic solutions, Kaba has
consolidated the locking system and
access control components in a
single system – a pioneering accomplishment! The online cylinder and
self-locking online anti-panic lock
with integrated antenna and status
indicators round of the versatile
product line.
The market for RFID systems
has grown dramatically. The trend is
towards multi-application solutions
with a single ID medium. This development is expedited by the fact
that the ISO standard 13.56 MHz
technology has gained acceptance
in North America as well. Various
current “white papers” support
technologies and applications that
Kaba customers have been using
successfully since 1992.
TRENDS
Two new door managers extend
the existing portfolio; firstly, the Kaba
exos DML2 with integrated Legic
advant technology ( ISO 15693 ), and
secondly, the Kaba exos DMU2
with an open interface for standard
readers. Both managers have a
variety of applications, among them
the option to operate two doors,
readers or data capture units with
one device. A large selection of
monitoring functions is also available.
The offline capability means that
the system remains available even
in the event of a link loss. In such
cases, the individual timed authorizations are checked and logged directly by the door manager.
Kaba exos DML2 is a compatible extension of Kaba exos
LS-110. The door manager supports
all currently known reader units.
Its Legic advant technology offers
the highest level of security and
encrypts communications between
ID card and door manager within
the secure area.
Kaba exos DMU2 supports standard readers with Wiegand or clock/
data interfaces and any media technology. Compatibility is pro vided for
HID, INDALA, STid, phd, and many
other makes. Different technologies
can be accommodated
simultaneously. This means hasslefree migration, low maintenance
costs and high investment protection
for customers.
The full functionality of the new
door managers comes to the fore
when they are integrated in a Kaba
exos 9300 access control system.
The system also manages Kaba
elolegic stand-alone components and
ties them into virtual networks. This
unique integration breadth and the
large choice of functional modules
keeps users fit for the future – with
guaranteed Kaba compatibility.

The hotel challenge
Few industries manage an information technology environment as complex as the hotel industry.
Large hotels may use over 100 different systems, many requiring some level of interaction between them. Examples include Property Management, Point of Sale, Central Reservation, Food
and Beverage, Internet Access, Self Check-in Kiosks and Access Control Systems. In response,
Kaba Lodging Systems led the industry by incorporating the latest networking technologies
into its ATLAS System. Kaba is currently the only lodging access control provider offering the
desired levels of system inter-operability.
The hotel industry is generally
dissatisfied with its current system
technology solutions and their ability
to adapt to future business requirements. This dissatisfaction can
be attributed to a lack of inter-vendor cooperation, inter-system compatibility, and poor use of modern
technologies. Hotels have to manage
this complexity, often resulting in
frustrated hotel staff and in the
worst-case scenario, disgruntled
guests.
The hotel industry has found it
difficult to effectively communicate its
technology vision and requirements
to system vendors. However, there’s
been movement to leverage existing
technologies such as Web Services,
XML and SOAP, and to establish
compatibility standards without sacrificing or limiting individual vendor
features and benefits. The HTNG
group (Hotel Technology Next Generation) was recently established
to address this interest. HTNG
members include both hoteliers and
vendors, discussing future requirements in a non-biased open forum,
to advance the level of technology,
improve system inter-action and offer
truly guest-centric services.

HTNG, Kaba is currently the only
vendor to offer a lodging access
control system already using the
level of technology and inter-operability desired by the industry.

Grupo HTNG (Hotel Technology Next Generation). Kaba es miembro activo del grupo

the card is retained in a collector bin inside the kiosk
or dropped into a tray where it can be retrieved by the
holder. This dual functionality makes the kiosk suitable
for both employee and visitor passes.

Security Update no. 32 – 2/2005
In the case of fire or in panic situations inside a
building, the key concern is to protect human life.
New, harmonized EU standards for escape doors make
a distinction between emergency exits (EN 179) and
panic doors (EN 1125).
For both EU standards, Kaba offers an extensive
portfolio of products that can be customized to
each application. It includes door locksets with different panic functions, complementary hardware, short
escutcheon kits, and panic bars. The “tested unit”
concept is also new: the lockset, the hardware, and
the assembly fittings must now be tested, certified,
and installed as a single unit.

Kaba on tour
How does an airport operator
like Unique Flughafen AG design its
security system? How does dairy
products processor Emmi protect
its goods against unauthorized
access? Every application poses
its own set of requirements.
“Security on site” was
the topic of “Kaba on tour”: Kaba
provided insights into different
all-in-one solutions at eight roadshow events. Major corporations
seldom allow the public to cast
an eye backstage, and when they
do, it is certainly a sign of confidence in their own infrastructure.
This past spring, security
advisors and planners, architects,
and interested end users were
invited to go beyond closed doors
at several locations. The events
provided rare glimpses into the
world of security, and the turnout
was impressive.

Security Update no. 32 – 2/2005
Outstanding packaging
There was much to see:
Within the scope of its «Total Access»
concept, Kaba showed how components and door systems interact
and discussed new products and
trends in “doorkeeping”. Particularly
because it was embedded in onsite demonstrations, this information
was much appreciated. The presentations delivered by the respective security chiefs highlighting
the real-world functionality of the
deployed solutions also generated
a positive response.
«Total Access» describes
the Kaba ability to offer customers
single-source, all-in-one doorkeeping solutions. Whether electronic access control and data
collection, mechanical or mechatronic cylinders and locking systems, automatic doors, or security
doors – all Kaba components are
compatible, assuring the ultimate in
convenience, security, and investment protection.
Kaba on tour – seguridad in situ
Una ojeada exclusiva entre bastidores.
Los eventos “Kaba en ruta” con ocho
soluciones diferentes mostradas in
situ. Ejemplos: aeropuerto Unique Flughafen AG o manufacturas lácteas Emmi.
Introduced in July 2005, the
new packaging for all Kaba and
Gege lock cylinders produced
by Kaba in Austria won the official
prize for outstanding transport
packaging awarded by the Austrian Ministry of the Economy.
The new packaging fulfills a
host of technical, logistics-related,
and ecological criteria. At the
same time, it is very inexpensive.

Partnering with the Ambassador Conference Resort, CocaCola, Bell Canada, cStar Technologies and RSI International,
Kaba participated in a successful
pilot project to offer Wireless
Cashless Vending services to hotel
guests and staff. This service
allows guests to vend using their
guestroom keycard or cell phone.
The Kaba ATLAS technology
made integration with the RSI
property management system
simple, regardless of the fact their
PMS system is actually hosted
4,000 km from the hotel. The benefits were measured in increased
vending and guest satisfaction,
and a significant drop in machine
vandalism.
