Pope: Church is called to serve, not to be served
2015-11-6 Vatican Radio
Pope Francis developed his homily based on two images of servants presented in the readings from the day’s liturgy. First,
he presented the figure of Saint Paul “who gave himself completely to service, always” such that he ended up in Rome
betrayed by those who were close to him, and “condemned.” Where did this greatness of the Apostles come from? the
Pope asked. It came from Jesus Christ, and Saint Paul “boasts of serving Him, of being chosen, of having the strength of the
Holy Spirit.”
The Christian is called to serve, not to be served
He was the servant who served, the Pope said, “he ministered, laying the foundation, that is, announcing Jesus Christ” and
“he never stopped to take advantage of his position, of his authority, of being served. He was a minister, a servant in order
to serve, not to be served.”
“I tell you how much joy I have,” Pope Francis said, “what moves me, when in this Mass some priests come up and greet
me: ‘O Father, I have come here to find my own people, because for forty years I have been a missionary in the Amazon.’
Or a sister who says, ‘No, I have worked for thirty years in a hospital in Africa.’ Or when I find a little sister who for thirty,
forty years is working in the department of the hospital with the disabled, always smiling. This is called ‘serving,’ this is the
joy of the Church: going out to others, always; going out to others and giving life. This is what Paul did: serving.”
“No to climbers, attached to money, in the Church”
In the Gospel, the Pope said, the Lord shows us the image of another servant, “who instead of serving others is served by
them.” He continued, “We have read what this servant did, how he acted with shrewdness, in order to remain in his position.”
“In the Church, too, there are these kinds of people, who instead of serving, of thinking of others, of laying the foundations,
are served by the Church: ‘climbers,’ those who are attached to money. And how many priests and Bishops like this have
we seen? It’s sad to speak of it, isn’t it? The radical character of the Gospel, of the call of Jesus Christ: to serve, to be at the
service [of others], of not stopping for oneself, going out to others always, being forgetful of oneself. And the comfort of the
state: I have reached a certain state and I live comfortably, without integrity, like those Pharisees Jesus spoke about, who
go out into the public square to be seen by others.”
A Church that does not serves becomes a business-like Church
The Pope described “two images of Christians, two images of priests, two images of sisters.” And Jesus, he said, “makes us
see this model in Paul, this Church that never stops” that “always goes forward and shows us the path.”
“Instead, when the Church is tepid, closed in on itself, businesslike, it cannot be said to be a Church that serves, that is at
the service [of others], but rather [it must be said] that it is using others. May the Lord give us the grace He gave to Paul,
that point of pride of always going forward, always, renouncing, time and again, its own comfort; and may He save us
from temptations, from those temptations which at their base are temptations to a double life: I see myself as a minister,
that is, as one who serves, but at the base I am served by others.”

lindo ejemplo esa viejita, lindo ejemplo!

RCIA TESTIMONIES
ther, and man of God as also increased.
From the time of Barnabas escorting Saul to the apostles
(Acts 9:26-27), Christians have given witness for those
seeking baptism or reception into the full communion of
the Catholic Church. Today, RCIA sponsors, team and
community members give testimony concerning readiness
After dialoging with friends and family, through
discernment in prayer and thought, and finally
through the constant support and encouragement
of his wife, Matt began the RICA process in Lent
2015. As a candidate in the RCIA process, Matt’s
experience has grown in seeing the wisdom of the
Scriptures, the richness of the liturgical life of the
Church, and the greater awareness of our dependence on God for spiritual nourishment. I am confident, as Matt is received into full communion with
the Church through the Profession of Faith, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist, he will continue to
strive towards the path to sanctity, always relying
on the strength of the community and the Sacraments that the Lord has given us to sustain our life
of grace. At age 18, Matt was called to a life of
grace in the Lord, now, he will be sent with the
gifts of the Spirit to share that grace with others.
Matt Isaacson – candidate
John Chambers - sponsor
To the community of St.
Theresa, for the past several months, I have been the
RCIA sponsor of Matt
Isaacson as he has embarked on a pilgrimage of
faith towards full unity with
Christ Jesus in the Catholic
Church. He began his intentional discipleship with
the Lord at the age of 18,
being baptized at Heritage
Baptist Church, where Matt was incorporated into
the Body of Christ and made a sharer in her mission.
Q&A
In 2008, Matt entered into marriage with Rachelle, a
beautiful young lady from a devoted Catholic family,
followed by two adorable children with one on the
way. Throughout the years, Matt has attended the
Holy Mass and is committed to raising his children
in the Catholic faith. Though he has always been
inquisitive about religion and the human person, in
recent months, Matt’s interest has intensified to know
what Catholicism is all about. He struggled to understand and accept the usual doctrinal roadblocks
many non-Catholics share: the mystery of the Eucharist, our devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the office of the Pope and his relationship to the universal
Church, and the Communion of Saints. But in addition to the intellectual exercise of discovering Catholicism, Matt’s hunger to cultivate virtue as a person in the various modes of his life as husband, fa-
I could never be a RCIA sponsor, I’m too
busy.
We want busy people who are active in church and
community activities to be sponsors as they can bring
their candidate along with them. A sponsor introduces
a candidate to the faith community and helps get them
involved.
While we like our sponsors to attend some of the catechumenate sessions, about once a month or so, we
mainly ask the sponsor introduce the catechumen or
candidate to the community and to share their faith life
experiences with them.

NOVEMBER 15, 2015
S T. T HERESA C ATHOLIC S CHOOL
PRAYER BEFORE MASS
STCS Griffin Library Book Drive
October 23 - November 20
Almighty and ever-living God, I approach the sacrament of Your only-begotten Son Our Lord Jesus
Christ. I come sick to the doctor of life, unclean to
the fountain of mercy, blind to the radiance of eternal light, and poor and needy to the Lord of heaven
and earth. Lord, in your great generosity, heal my
sickness, wash away my defilement, enlighten my
blindness, enrich my poverty, and clothe my nakedness. May I receive the bread of angels, the King of
kings and Lord of lords, with humble reverence, with
the purity and faith, the repentance and love, and the
determined purpose that will help to bring me to salvation. May I receive the sacrament of the Lord's
Body and Blood, and its reality and power. Kind
God, may I receive the Body of Your only-begotten
Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, born from the womb of
the Virgin Mary, and so be received into His mystical
body and numbered among His members. Loving
Father, as on my earthly pilgrimage I now receive
Your beloved Son under the veil of a sacrament, may
I one day see him face to face in glory, who lives and
reigns with You for ever. Amen.

THANKSGIVING AFTER MASS
I thank you, holy Lord, almighty Father, eternal God,
who deigned to feast me, sinful and unworthy servant, with the precious body and blood of your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord, not for any merit of mine, but
only because of your merciful goodness. And I pray
that this Holy Communion, far from condemning me
to punishment, may bring about my pardon and salvation, encompassing me with the armor of faith and
the shield of a good will. By it let my vices be done
away, all lustful desires extinguished. May it advance
me in charity, patience, humility, obedience, and
every other virtue. Let it be strong defense against the
wiles of all my enemies, visible and invisible, allaying for me every disturbance of flesh and spirit, binding me firmly to you, the one true God, and bringing
my last hour to a happy close. I pray, too, that it may
be your pleasure to call my sinful self one day to that
banquet, wonderful past all telling, where you, with
your Son and the Holy Spirit, feast your saints with
the vision of yourself, who are true light, the fulfillment of all desires, the joy that knows no ending,
gladness unalloyed, and perfect bliss: through the
same Christ our Lord. Amen.

LOVING EMBRACE INFERTILITY SUPPORT GROUP:
PERPETUAL ADORATION
The group meets the 3rd Thursday, each month, 7:309:00 p.m., monthly meeting rotation: Couples Dinner,
Ladies Dinner, and Couples Discussion.
Loving Embrace is a Catholic educational support group
for couples who have endured or are presently enduring
the pain and suffering of infertility.
For over a decade, the parishioners of St. Theresa have
been engaged in a continual act of prayer before the
Blessed Sacrament. For twenty-four hours a day, every
day of the year, the needs of the universal Church, our
nation, the parish, our families, and our personal needs
have been lifted up to the Lord.
The group provides support for coping with infertility and
explores resources, methods, and options that are morally faithful to the teachings of the Catholic Church.
The Emmaus chapel of Perpetual Adoration is open to
everyone. The parish invites you to commit to one
hour of prayer a week before the Blessed Sacrament.
For rotation information contact Shannon Lassen at 832978-6716 [email protected].
There are a few hours during the week in which we
only have one adorer.
