Michael B. Brillantes SHOES ON MY FEET ZAPATOS EN MIS PIES In May 1985 I attended a one-month course at East Asian Pastoral Institute (EAPI) in Manila. It was a gathering of pastoral workers from the Philippines and from neighboring countries like Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and even Fiji. The different national groups would take turn in leading the daily mass with their own priest presiding and them singing their own songs. I remember in particular Thank, You Lord, sung by the Fijians during the offertory. It has an easy-to-follow melody and simple but touching words that speak of gratitude to God for providing the basic necessities of life, of food, clothing and shelter. I love the line that goes, “There’s food on my table and shoes on my feet.” Food means life and shoes stands for dignity. Where I come from in the Philippines, there’s no stark poverty. People have food to eat, clothes to wear and roof over their heads but shoes are luxury items many can’t afford. People value education and they struggle hard to send their children to school trying their best to pay the tuition fees but there’s hardly any extra for school uniform, much less for shoes. Many children go to school in old worn out shoes that have seen better days. And when the rain comes, they slog barefoot thru mud for kilometers while carrying their precious shoes in hand doing their very best to extend the life span of their footwear at the risk of exposing their feet to abuse, if not injury. At around this time last year, through the help of a good soul who prefers not to be named, our parish sent forty pairs of brand new shoes to the students of the catholic school where I studied and where my sister is the principal. The children wrote back. Here’s an excerpt of one letter, “Thank you, Father, for the shoes you gave me. Every time I wear them to school I remember you in gratitude. I hope that there are more students who can’t afford that you can help.” What touched me was that not one of them asked for more help. Instead they wished that more students could be helped. I would like to do that and if you could help me multiply the shoes, please, do so. I hope to send 300 pairs of shoes to the indigent children in my hometown in time for their centennial celebration on January 15. I I’m calling this project Shoes on My Feet. On a lighter note, a couple of years ago, a priest classmate who serves at an orphanage came visiting. He was excited when I asked him to do a mass. There was a small problem, though. He was wearing a pair of tennis shoes. I had an extra pair of dress shoes so I asked him to try them. He did. Then he turned to me, smiled and said, “The shoe fits, Mike. I must be Cinderella.” He broke in laughter. Funny guy! I gave him the shoes. ¡Chico divertido!
