That is the message for Bronx lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) young adults, thanks in part to a pop music icon who has always chosen to stand out. True Colors, a new residence specifically for LGBT youths with a history of homelessness, has opened on Jerome Avenue in Bedford Park The residence features 30 studio apartments and was built by nonprofit outfit West End Residences, which previously established a successful LGBT housing facility in Harlem. The Bronx project is a replica of West End’s Harlem location, which became the city’s first permanent, affordable housing complex specifically for LGBT youth when it opened in 2011. “This brings us one step closer to our goal of establishing a True Colors residence in every borough of New York City,” said Colleen Jackson, Executive Director of West End Residences. The projects were conceived by Jackson in partnership with Grammywinning singer Cyndi Lauper and Lauper’s manager, L i s a Barbaris. The project’s title is a reference to Lauper’s popular song of the same name. Influenza, or “the flu” is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death in vulnerable adults and children. Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu. It is a highly contagious illness, and easily spread to others. During a regular “flu season,” about 90 percent of deaths occur in people 65 years and older. Now is the time to protect yourself and your family. Everyone six months and older should get an influenza vaccination each year. A flu vaccine (either the flu shot or the nasal-spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal influenza and lessen the chance that you will spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against influenza, the less it will spread through the community. There are plenty of reasons people do not get the flu shot. Dr. Maria Wright. Let’s take a look at some of the myths and facts: Myth: Getting a flu vaccine can cause the flu. Fact: You can’t get the flu from a flu vaccination. A riot of color. Fall into Beauty By Nilka Martell “I am a Bronx native, daughter, sister, mother of three beautiful Bronx babies, photographer, writer and motivator,” says contributor Nilka Martell, of Puerto Rican descent, as she continues to explore her hometown. Here is her latest installment. I traveled far from the Bronx this past weekend, and headed to Pennsylvania for my eldest daughter’s wedding. To get to her home, you must cross Hawk’s Nest in New York. Hawk’s Nest is a winding road, a section of NY Route 97, along the Upper Delaware River with scenic views. It was breathtaking. The leaves were changing colors, adding yet another beautiful, and natural, detail to the already amazing views. As we pulled over to soak in the beauty, I was reminded of my borough. The Bronx is the borough of park land. While we might often see a concrete jungle, a quarter of our borough is made up of green spaces. During the fall, my kids and I visit several places, including the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG), the Bronx Zoo, Pelham Bay Park, and, of course, the Bronx River and the Bronx Forest near Burke Bridge. It isn’t as far as going upstate, or out of state, yet they all offer beautiful natural settings. This past week, I visited the Bronx Zoo, where my favorite exhibit is the monorail through Wild Asia. The ride crosses the Bronx River at 2 points. The second point is the highest, at over 30 feet, above the River. The views are amazing, as are the variety of animals. And if you have smaller children, they will enjoy “Boo at the Zoo”. In November, the NYBG offers Fall Forest Weekends. On November 7 and 8, and 14 and 15, between 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., there are activities focused on the largest tract of old growth forest in New York City. Our favorite part of the festivities are the canoe rides in the Bronx River. But it doesn’t stop at these two amazing institutions. For free fun, visit our city parks. Orchard Beach, in Pelham Bay Park, is open all year round. A walk through Hunter Island and Twin Island during the fall is quite magical. There aren’t any public transportation options as swimming season is over, but the grounds remain open, and the natural views are astonishing. The Bronx River Alliance is still offering free canoe rides. The next free community paddling events are scheduled for October 10 and 24th at Concrete Plant Park. If you haven’t experienced the Bronx River, the city’s only fresh water river, I encourage you do to so. A ride on what was once an open sewer will completely change your view. Lastly, the Bronx Forest located by Burke Bridge, offers walking trails and wonderful views. We enjoy watching the leaves fall into the river, and the squirrels preparing for winter. Also check out the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum, Wave Hill and Van Cortlandt Park for each institution’s seasonal activities. They each have their own websites, with information regarding upcoming events. All New York has much to offer, but I urge us all to get to know our own hometown better. BANNED from p7 Klein expressed concerns about the increasing number of visits to emergency rooms caused by K2 consumption. Since May, he said, over 700 visits to Bronx emergency rooms have been associated with the use of the substance. “This is an epidemic,” said Klein. “This is not a city issue. It is a state issue, it is a national issue.” ASOBEU General Secretary Radames Rodríguez said the crisis has caught many offguard and required comprehensive approach. “It started like something authorities did not believe was going to cause so much harm,” he said. Last month, Klein introduced legislation to strengthen penalties for stores selling synthetic cannabinoids. The legislation provides punishment of $2,000 for first-time offenders, $5,000 for second-time offenders and the third violation results in the loss of the store owners’ liquor, tobacco and lottery license. Councilmember Torres said that the increase in popularity of K2 currently made it “probably the most widespread drug epidemic.” Minister Kirsten John Foy, who serves as the Northeast Regional Director of the National Action Network (NAN), said that city, state and federal authorities needed to intervene as soon as possible, before K2 usage escalates to proportions comparable to the crack cocaine epidemic in the 80’s. “Before we know it, we [will be] overwhelmed as a community,” warned Foy. He said that the manufacturers of K2 were exporting a harmful product designed to attract young people. “We are dealing with a marketing campaign that is purposely looking to harm our children,” charged Foy. Murphy echoed the call for stricter laws. “I believe we have to be stronger,” he said. “Close the stores that are selling K2. We don’t need another epidemic in our community.” Studies have shown that K2 manufacturers constantly tweak the product’s formula in order to subvert the laws and regulations. Because of the variable inconsistency, the effects produced by the drug vary from package to package. “It is not like any other product,” noted Foy. “It changes from one package to the other.” Councilmember Torres agreed. “It is unpredictable,” he said. “When you are using K2, there is no telling what chemicals are entering your body. We have to take control of the destiny of our neighborhood.” Community Board 7 Chair Adaline WalkerSantiago said the outreach and education efforts needed to be ongoing. “We are working together to make sure K2 is off the streets,” said Walker-Santiago. “We need to let the children know how dangerous this is. You can get seizures, heart attacks, you can die.” Klein pledged to continue in his efforts to eradicate K2. “We are not going to rest until we get this dangerous substance off our streets,” he said. There will be a summit with city, state and local leaders hosted by Sen. Klein on synthetic marijuana on October 9th at Jacobi Hospital. Perhaps the hoopla around Serena has inspired you to start up a relationship with tennis—or to renew your acquaintance, if it’s been a while since you shook hands with a racquet. It may be that you are a regular player already and are seeking an affordable outdoor court closer to home. I’ve got good news on all fronts. New York City Parks and Recreation has many outdoor courts all over the city, and some of the best are found uptown. Once you’ve obtained a yearly permit, you can play on them for free until November 22; or, you can play for only $15 per hour singles, or two hours for doubles. The Pluses of Tennis Tennis was once an elite sport, within reach mostly of the moneyed, leisure class. But, now it’s for anyone: those who just want to be healthy and have some fun while being more physically active, and those for whom exercise, competition, and winning is the imperative. Tennis adds achievement, confidence and self-esteem to your life and your athletic routine. At any level or age, tennis is a great way to get and stay fit in body and mind. It is Tennis, Everyone? Tennis is a healthy activity for people of all ages. Photo by Sadichchha Adhikari relatively low impact and can be played at any skill level. It can help you manage your weight, blood pressure, stress, and cholesterol levels. It’s healthy for your bones as well as your muscles. You can burn up to 420-600 calories playing singles tennis for one hour and about 330-425 calories playing doubles. It improves your coordination, flexibility, and balance. Tennis is an activity that engages your brain as much as your body, requiring creative planning, strategizing and agility. These advantages help you on and off the court. Now’s the Time to “Fall” in “Love” While we might equate outdoor tennis with summertime, the cooler weather in fall is the perfect time to don your Serena Williams tiara and show those tennis balls what you’ve Tenis, ¿Alguien? The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) has completed longawaited repairs to the sidewalks outside of Parkside Houses in the Bronx. The sprawling New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) complex on White Plains Road consists of 14 buildings and nearly 2,000 residents. The repairs were announced on September 29 by DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg and City Councilmember Ritchie Torres. “We are thrilled sidewalks at NYCHA properties in all five boroughs are receiving much-needed repairs and I’m happy to add Parkside Houses to that growing list,” said Trottenberg. “This is a win that will benefit thousands of Parkside Houses residents, as well as those who pass through this busy commercial and residential area,” she added. Between September 9 and 15, the DOT conducted repairs on the crumbling sidewalk outside the housing complex. “For too long, Parkside Houses’ sidewalks were ranked the worst in all of NYCHA’s housing stock,” commented Torres. The repairs included 11,180 square feet of new concrete sidewalks, 643 linear feet of new concrete curb and an upgraded corner with pedestrian ramps. The total cost of the project was an estimated $132,230. “I am proud to have worked with the S Department of Transportation and NYCHA to bring these necessary repairs,” said Torres. “And I hope similar work will be done in a timely manner at other NYCHA developments where repairs are needed.” In his latest budget, Mayor Bill de Blasio more than doubled the city’s investment in sidewalk repairs, expected to be $46 million annually over the next four years. As a result, the DOT will be tripling its annual commitment to NYCHA properties from $1 million to $3 million over that period. In recent years, the city has repaired sidewalks on 44 NYCHA properties, including the Sotomayor Houses in the Soundview section of the Bronx. “Por mucho tiempo, las aceras de 20 Sidewalks at the Parkside Houses have been repaired. Registration drives are held at campuses throughout the city. In 2014, 74 patients received bone marrow from people registered by the foundation. MATCHMAKERS from p12 should a match be found. “In the end, only about 30 to 40 percent of patients are actually able to find a match,” stated da Silva. For this reason, da Silva recommends that potential donors who have already joined the national registry remember to update their personal information. “It can take a while before a match is found,” he said. In the case of Isabella, her donor signed up in 1991, but there was no match found for him until 2013. The Icla da Silva Foundation holds more than 200 donor registration events each month, partnering with community groups, churches, schools, universities and other organizations. Locally, the foundation conducts registration drives at Bronx Community College and various campuses of the City NBC 4 New York Reporter Melissa Russo is event MC. University of New York (CUNY), among other sites. Da Silva said the national registry is in dire need of donors from communities of color. “Only a small percentage of bone marrow donors are African American, Hispanic or mixed race,” said Da Silva. With a multicultural staff and a large network of volunteers, the foundation is seeking to tap into ethnic communities to increase the donor pool. Registering as a potential donor is quick and simple, said da Silva. “To register, all that’s required is filling out a form and having a cheek swab done with a Q-tip,” he remarked. Applicants are then entered into the national registry, and would be contacted if a potential match is found for them. Da Silva said that many people avoid signing up as a donor, because they fear that the process involves a painful surgical procedure. “People have that misconception, but 75 percent of the time, it’s handled more like a blood donation,” he said.
