A Word on the Gospel
On this first Sunday of Lent we revisit
Jesus’ Temptation in the Desert during his forty
days of fasting and prayer in preparation for his
active ministry. If you look closely at this story as
recorded in the three synoptic Gospels you see slight
variations. In Luke’s, which we have today, Jesus is led
by the Spirit, but in Mark’s the translation is “he was
driven by the Spirit to the desert. I like using this story for
beginners in Bible Study, as it is a great example of
hyperbole as found in the Gospel. One should not take
things too literally when this figure of speech is used.
As an aside, in years past I had a group of young
kids, third through six graders, and after reading this story
to them and explaining it a little, I asked them to illustrate
what was important for them from this Gospel account.
And I literally got what I asked for! Some kids drew a very
literal picture of this Gospel. One very humorous drawing
had our Lord sitting in the passenger side of a car, being
chauffeured by God the Holy Spirit, (a white dove) on the
highway to the world’s hottest, driest, dustiest desert!. I
don’t know how much spiritual benefit this kid learned
from the lesson, but at least I knew his imagination was
sparked.

Una palabra acera del evangelio
En este primer Domingo de la Cuaresma
nosotros visitamos de nuevo La Tentación de Jesús
en el Desierto durante sus cuarenta días de ayuno y
oración en la preparación para su ministerio activo. Si te fijas
bien en esta historia como está registrado en los tres
Evangelios sinópticos veras ligeramente unas pocas
variaciones. En Lucas, que tenemos hoy, Jesús es guiado por
el Espíritu, pero en la traducción de Marcos es "él fue
conducido por el Espíritu al desierto”. Me gusta usar esta
historia para los principiantes en el estudio bíblico, ya que es
un gran ejemplo de la hipérbole como se encuentra en el
Evangelio. No hay que tomar las cosas demasiado literalmente
cuando se utiliza esta forma de hablar.
Como acotación al margen, en los últimos años yo
tenía un grupo de niños pequeños, de tercero y sexto grados, y
después de leerle esta historia a ellos, y explicarle un poco, les
pregunté para ilustrar lo que era importante para ellos de esta
cuenta del Evangelio. ¡Y yo, literalmente, recibí lo que pedí!
Algunos niños dibujaron una imagen muy literal de este
Evangelio. Un dibujo de buen humor de Nuestro Señor
sentado en el lado del pasajero de un automóvil, y el chofer
que manejaba era Dios el Espíritu Santo, (una paloma blanca)
¡en el expresó, en el desierto más caliente, más seco, más
polvoriento del mundo ! No sé cuánto beneficio espiritual
aprendió este chico de la lección, pero al menos sabía que su
imaginación se despertó.

Father Paul was in charge of raffles and piñatas. Kids and
adults enjoyed playing Loteria.

Lenten Rules for Fast and Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition,
Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59.
When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to
equal a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin
Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the
"paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves
to share more fully and to celebrate more readily his Resurrection.
