The T Riders Union (TRU) is demanding our right to an affordable and
reliable public transit. Right now we’re paying for a broken system. So,
what are you going to do? We say take action with TRU.
To start, check us out during the TRU Ride-a-thon, April 17-19th.
The event starts with a rally at the State House at 12 noon on Tuesday.
We’ll be doing outreach and asking riders to: fill out rider surveys; learn more
about their rights as riders through the TRU Riders’ Rights Guides; and become a
TRU member. Fill out a survey today.

riders together to fight for affordable,
accessible and reliable public transit.

When something goes wrong on your
bus route (rude driver, late bus, no heat,
no bell, broken down bus, etc.) take
these important steps:

This January the MBTA raised fares throughout the system in
an effort to stay afloat as it struggles with $5.2 billion in debt—the
most debt of any transit agency in the country. Since the State
pushed its Big Dig debt onto the T in 2000, the T has hiked fares three
times, in effect making riders bear the burden while state and
municipal payments did not increase.
“We’re paying for the State’s mistakes,” said Lee
Matsueda, T Riders Union (TRU) Organizer. “What’s even more of a
problem is that almost one-third of the T’s budget goes
towards paying off the debt.”
Every time fares are raised, ridership drops, bringing revenues
down and leaving the door open for additional fare increases. As part
of TRU’s campaign to stop this, legislators worked with TRU and our
partners to file an MBTA debt relief bill. The bill aims to put $2.9 billion
of the T’s debt back on the State—the exact amount given to the T in
2000. If passed, the measure could free up funds for service
improvements and prevent future fare hikes.
One challenge is convincing the entire state legislature to vote
favorably on a bill that only affects the 154 cities and towns served by
the MBTA. So, talk to your legislators about this issue. To sign a

El sindicato de pasajeros esta demandando nuestro derecho por un trasporte
publico costeable y responsable. A hora nosotros estamos pagando por un
sistema que esta quebrado. ¿Entonces, que vamos a hacer? Nosotros
decimos, únase y tome acción con el sindicato de pasajeros.
Para comenzar, acercase al TRU durante el Bus-a-thon, entre los días
16-19 de Abril, 2007. El evento comenzara con una demostración en la casa
de estado a las 12:00pm este martes 17 de Abril. Nosotros estaremos
entregando información y preguntándoles a los pasajeros: que llene el cuestionario
de TRU, Aprender más de los derechos de los pasajeros atrever de la guía de los

Cuando algo va mal en su ruta
(conductores groseros, tardanzas, falta de
calefacción, si el timbre no funciona, si el
autobús se daña, etc.) siga estos pasos:
1. Anote el número del autobús, la ruta, y
la hora.
2. Llame al (617) 222-5215 y dígales lo
que pasó.
3. Llámenos si el problema persiste. ¡Tome
acción!
En enero, el MBTA aumentó las tarifas en todo el sistema para
poder mantenerse a flote mientras lucha con su deuda de $5.2 millonesmás que ninguna otra agencia en el país. Desde que el Estado impuso su
deuda por el Big Dig al MBTA en el 2000, el T ha aumentado las tarifas
tres veces, imponiendo esta carga financiera a los pasajeros, mientras
que los pagos estatales y municipales no aumentaron.
“Estamos pagando por los errores del Estado,” dijo Lee
Matsueda, Organizador de T Riders Union (TRU). “Lo que es aún peor,
es que casi un tercio del presupuesto del T es para pagar estas
deudas.”
Cada vez que se aumentan las tarifas, la cantidad de pasajeros
es menor, resultando en menos ingresos y abriendo paso a aumentos
adicionales. Como parte de la campaña de TRU para detener este ciclo,
los legisladores y nuestros asociados que trabajan con TRU radicaron a
principio de año un proyecto de ley para aliviar la deuda. El proyecto de
ley busca reasignar $2.9 billones de la deuda del T al Estado- cantidad
exacta que se le asignó al T en el 2000. Si se aprueba este proyecto,
la medida podría liberar fondos para mejoras en los servicios y
prevenir futuros aumentos de las tarifas.
Uno de los retos será convencer a toda la legislatura de que
voten a favor del proyecto que sólo afecta al área metropolitana de
Boston. Entonces, hable con su legislador sobre este problema. Para
