An attached village, which belongs to Loja,
next to the dual-carriageway A-92. Interesting by its environmental and gastronomic

Recorrer: el agua
Agraciada por los ríos Riofrío -que le da
nombre- y Salado. Merece una especial
atención el recorrido hasta el nacimiento del primero que nos permite adentrarnos en la naturaleza salpicada por
antiguos molinos de finales del siglo
XVIII.
Journey beside: the water
The rivers Riofrío - which gives the name
to the town - and Salado make it more attractive. It is worthwhile going for a walk
until the source of the river Riofrío and
getting inside a natural setting spattered
with old mills from the end of the 18th
century.

Complejo megalítico situado en un enclave natural de espectaculares panorámicas, dominando tierras de Córdoba,
Granada y Málaga, junto con el pantano
de Iznájar.
El legado
La Prehistoria deja su huella en este paraje donde se sitúan los restos del poblado
y la necrópolis, que data de la edad del
Cobre, además de la torre atalaya árabe.

It introduces us in the natural environment
along the water cycle. Tourist Information
Point open all the year. Riofrío’s Environmental Interpretation Centre (C.I.A.R.,
spanish initials) offers to the visitor virtually a clear perspective of the natural environment the latter is in, by means of scale
models, explaining panelling and audiovisual support. Moreover, there is a computer room with internet. More information in the paragraph 5.
Go fishing at
> The Intensive Fishing Reserve
For the most active people the Fishing Reserve lets them practise this sport during
all the year. More details in the paragraph
Loja is a land of adventure (2.c).
A megalithic complex situated in a natural
enclave with spectacular sceneries, dominating lands of Cordoba, Granada and Malaga, together with the reservoir of Iznájar.
The legacy
The prehistory becomes plain in this place
where the remains of a village and a necropolis from the Copper Age, besides an
Arab watchtower, lie.
The necropolis
Situated in a privileged place. It is easy to
distinguish three kinds of dolmens: simple
dolmens, caves and complexes with a
structure similar to the type megarón. Its
originality resides in the building technique, since the dolmens are semi-dug or
totally dug into the rock.

El paisaje
Cuenta con un mirador desde el cual se
observan parte de tres provincias y una
espectacular panorámica del pantano de
Iznájar.

Cómo llegar
Para visitar Sierra Martilla se toma la
N- 321 dirección Priego de Córdoba
hasta llegar a Ventorros de San José.
Una vez aquí, se toma el camino rural
dirección las Rozuelas hasta alcanzar el
panel de situación de los dólmenes -a
unos 7 kilómetros-. La ruta continúa a
pie por un sendero señalizado.
Tiempo estimado en llegar desde Loja:
35 minutos.

The scenery
The lands of three provinces and the
reservoir of Iznájar may be looked at from
a viewpoint.
How to arrive
On the road N-321, direction to Priego de
Cordoba from Loja, there is a village: Ven-
torros de San José. Once here, a rural
road leads to Las Rozuelas. Before getting
to it, 7 kilometres from here, an indicative
panel must be seen on the right. Now on
foot, a track well signposted leads to the
necropolis.
Estimated time to get there from Loja: 35
minutes.
1.c. INFIERNOS
INCESSANT WATERFALL
Pintoresco enclave de cascadas y edificios travertínicos declarado Monumento
Natural (categoría de protección que se aplica a elementos de la Naturaleza de
notoria singularidad, rareza o belleza).
El paraje se debe al encajonamiento del río Genil a su paso por Loja, formando un
gran precipicio en el terreno calizo al que viene a despeñarse el arroyo Manzanil
tras el riego de la fértil vega, formando la Cola del Caballo, admirable cascada en la
que el agua salva un desnivel de 8 metros de altura.
La Cola del Caballo es la más conocida de los varios saltos de agua, cuyas alturas oscilan de 8 a 10 metros. De interés adicional son los travertinos creados por microorganismos en acción sobre la roca caliza.
A picturesque enclave with waterfalls and travertine structures, which has been declared
Natural Monument (a rank of protection, which is applied to the elements of Nature with
an obvious peculiarity, rarity or beauty).
The spot is due to the river Genil pushing its way through Loja, and forming a big
precipice in the limestone. Along where the river Manzanil pours permanently its water to
the previous one at a height of 8 to 10 metres, after the watering of the fertile plain, forming the admirable and the most known waterfall called “Cola del Caballo” (Horse’s Tale).
An additional interest is the travertine structures created by micro-organisms into action
on the limestone.
Cómo llegar
Desde el casco urbano de Loja debemos tomar la Avenida Rafael Pérez del Álamo.
Siguiendo esta avenida, antes de llegar al puente Aliatar, existe una calle, Calle Molinillos, que va a dar con el camino del mismo nombre. Si continuamos este camino
hasta el final (pasando por el parque de bomberos) estaremos en el inicio del límite
del Monumento Natural en una explanada que existe junto al río Genil.
Tiempo estimado en llegar: 20 minutos; en coche, 5 minutos.
Época para visitar: durante todo el año. Hay que tener en cuenta que algunos días la
cascada más importante (la cola del caballo) no se ve debido a que puede ser cortada por uso comercial del agua. De todas maneras, el paraje merece su visita por su
interés natural y paisajístico.
How to arrive
From the city centre, we have to take Avenida Rafael Pérez del Álamo. Following this
avenue, before you arrive to Aliatar bridge, there is a street, Calle Molinillos, it ends
in a road with the same name. If we continue until the end of this way (crossing through the fire station) you will be at the beginning of the border of the Natural Monument in an esplanade next to the Genil river.
Estimated time: 20 minutes on foot; 5 minutes by car.
Visit time: during the whole year. We have to take into account that some days the
main waterfall (la cola del caballo) it is not seen due to the water could be cut because of commercial use of the water. However, the place is worth to visit because
of its natural and landscape interest.

RINCÓN IDÍLICO
LUNAR LANDSCAPE
Recóndito lugar donde, al final de la travesía nos vemos sorprendidos por la
cascada de Las Chorreras y el gran charco de agua. El salto de agua o cascada
se nutre de la confluencia de dos arroyos: Arroyo del Nieblín y Arroyo de la
Viñuela, que al caer con gran fuerza, ha
ido perforando el suelo hasta formar la
profunda charca o poza.
It is a karstic massif (it constitutes the
province’s main concentration of limestone). It boasts vast numbers of resources, and it accepts the practice of
every kind of adventure sports. The recent
signals will point the several objectives.
Cómo llegar
Para llegar se toma la carretera A- 341
dirección Iznájar hasta llegar a la Venta
de Santa Bárbara. Una vez allí, se camina por un sendero que parte de la pedanía -15 minutos aproximadamentehasta llegar al enclave. Tiempo estimado en llegar desde Loja: hasta las
Ventas de Santa Bárbara, 10 - 15 minutos; sendero (a pie): 15 minutos.

1.d. CHORRERAS
IDYLLIC PLACE
A hidden place, which shelters surprisingly a waterfall and a pond.
The waterfall feeds on two streams: Nieblín and Viñuela, whose waters fall so
strongly these have been perforating the
ground and forming the deep pond.
1.e. LA SIERRA DE LOJA
PAISAJE LUNAR
La Sierra de Loja es un macizo kárstico
(constituye la mayor concentración caliza de la provincia de Granada). Cuenta con infinidad de recursos y permite
la práctica de todo tipo de deportes de
aventura. La reciente señalización de
la sierra nos orientará hacia nuestros
objetivos.
Observar: los recursos naturales
> El paisaje
Desde las formaciones rocosas se divisan panorámicas sobre numerosos puntos de la comarca. Su origen calizo posibilita la existencia de numerosas cavidades, fracturas y cuevas verticales en la
roca. De entre ellas, la Cueva Horadada
es una de las más conocidas.
> Las especies animales
La Sierra es un ecosistema en sí mismo. Durante el trayecto puede obser-
varse el vuelo de las aves y rapaces,
así como otras especies mamíferas gato montés, gineta, cabra montesa- y
reptiles. Además cuenta con su propia
especie endémica: el gallipato, que habita en el Charco del Negro.
> El agua
Está considerado como el holokarst
más importante de la provincia de Granada. El macizo alberga en su interior
un importante acuífero que se abastece del agua que capta la sierra dada
su naturaleza kárstica que facilita el
filtrado del agua. El Charco del Negro
aparece como un oasis en mitad de la
Sierra.

Las nuevas tecnologías conviven con el
medio natural en el tecno-geoparque de
la Sierra.
How to arrive
On the road A-341, direction to Iznájar

Observe: the natural resources
> The scenery
From the rocky forms panoramic views of
the region can be distinguished. The limestone makes possible the existence of numerous cavities, breaks and vertical caves
into the rock. Among all these, the cave
Horadada is one of the most known.
> The animal species
The mountain itself is an ecosystem, where predatory and other birds can be seen
flying. As well as there are mammals -like
wildcats, “ginetas” and wild goats-, and
reptiles. Moreover, there is an endemic
species inhabiting the pond Charco del
Negro: the “gallipato”.
> The water
This mountain is considered to be the
province’s main holokarst. The massif
shelters in its interior an important amount of water, which supplies itself with
the water the mountain filters thanks to
its karstic nature. The pond Charco del
Negro appears like an oasis surrounded
with the dryness of the mountain.

La amplia variedad de deportes que pueden practicarse en la Sierra abarcan desde la práctica de vuelo libre, hasta el cicloturismo, la espeleología, la escalada

Cómo llegar
Acceso desde Loja: es el camino más
conocido, pese a la salvedad de un
primer tramo con cierto desnivel en el
terreno.
Nos situamos en la Avda. Andalucía,
-antigua carretera de Málaga-. La subi-

da a la Sierra se encuentra entre la ermita de San Roque y el Hotel Mirador.
Como referencia, el inicio de la subida
coincide con una plaza.
Acceso desde Área de Servicio Los
Abades: el camino se encuentra nivelado desde el principio, lo que facilita la
subida a todo tipo de vehículos.
Se parte desde el Area de Servicios
Los Abades, situado en la A-92, dirección Sevilla-Granada. La subida comienza en el camino que parte junto a
la gasolinera.
Como referencia, el inicio coincide con
la ubicación de un panel de inicio de
rutas de senderismo por la Sierra.

The new technologies live together with
the natural environment in the techno geopark of the mountain.
Be active: adventure sports
The large variety of sports which can be
practised here includes the gliding, the
touring by bicycle, the potholing or cave
exploring, the climbing or the trekking... an
example of the latter is the Fishmongers’
Route. Details in the paragraph 2.
How to arrive
Access road from Loja: it is the bestknown way, in spite of a first section with

certain unevenness. The road begins in
Andalucía Avenue -old road to Malaga- between San Roque Hermitage and Mirador
Hotel. As a reference, it coincides with a
square.
Access road from Abades service station:
the way is even from the beginning, what
makes the ascent easy for every type of
vehicle.
The service station is at the dual carriageway A-92, in the direction from Sevilla to
Granada. The way begins next to the petrol
station.
At the entrance, there is a signal which indicates the start of trekking routes through
Sierra of Loja.

Water Route
Loja, Ciudad del Agua. Dan fe de ello sus numerosos manantiales, ríos, charcos,
lagunas, arroyos y las más de 100 fuentes registradas en el municipio. Uno de
sus causantes es la Sierra de Loja, gran acuífero kárstico que filtra el agua a través de sus rocas calizas. Les proponemos este recorrido al que llamaremos Ruta
del Agua y que tendrá dos fases: casco urbano y exteriores.
Loja, City of Water. Its numerous springs, rivers, ponds, lagoons, streams and its
more than 100 fountains registered in the town, bear witness to it. One of the causers
is Sierra of Loja, big water store which filters the water through the limestone. We
propose this run we shall call Water Route and which will have two phases: the town
centre and the surroundings.
CASCO URBANO
TOWN CENTER
Existen más de 100 fuentes registradas en la localidad lojeña. Daremos a conocer algunas de las más
emblemáticas de la ciudad, y aprovechamos para comentar el patrimonio que nos iremos encontrando.
There are more than 100 fountains registered in Loja. We let you know some of the most
emblematic ones in the city, and we shall take this opportunity to mention the inheritance
we shall find in the run.
Comenzamos el recorrido por el popular barrio del
Mesón de Arroyo, desde donde se observa una bonita panorámica de la ciudad en el Mirador de Sylvania –nombre que hace honor al fotograma que los
hermanos Marx utilizaron en su película Sopa de Ganso–. Donde comienza la calle Real nos encontramos
la primera muestra.
1. Fuente de la Avenida de Jesús
Fuente a modo de abrevadero con una gran “piscina” de piedra y con dos caños. En el centro posee
un escudo de la ciudad.
La gran originalidad de la fuente reside en el origen
de sus aguas, ya que de su caño derecho emana
agua de la sierra que proviene del manantial del
Confín, a diferencia del agua surtida por el caño izquierdo, que proviene directamente de la red de
aguas del Ayuntamiento.
Tradicionalmente, y aun hoy en día, es utilizada para
saciar la sed, no sólo de los transeúntes, sino además de las bestias de carga tales como los mulos o
burros. Muestra de ello son los enganches que aun
podemos observar en el muro en el que está situada
la fuente.
Hasta hace poco acudía diariamente un anciano famoso por realizar canastas de
mimbre manufacturadas a la manera tradicional.
Patrimonio: Mausoleo de Narváez, Ermita de Jesús Nazareno.
Bajamos la calle Conde de Tendillas para encontrarnos con la más conocida de todas.
2. Fuente de la Mora o de los 25 caños y manantial del Borbollote
Es la fuente por antonomasia de Loja, plasmada una y mil veces en postales, folletos
y demás “recuerdos” de la localidad, se encuentra en el barrio de La Alfaguara junto
al nacimiento del Borbollote (El lavadero), cerca de las hoy día desaparecidas puertas
medievales “del Agua o del Alfaguara” y “de Archidona”. El origen de este barrio se
remonta a la época de ocupación musulmana, aunque la fuente data del s. XVII. Fue
utilizada por los vecinos de este barrio para recoger el agua que en esta época aún no
había llegado a sus moradas.
We start the run in the popular Mesón de Arroyo neighbourhood, where a beautiful
panoramic view can be observed from Sylvania Viewpoint - called like this in honour of
Marx Brothers’ film: Why a duck?, where Loja plays Sylvania’s role -. Where Real Street
begins, the first sample is.
1. Fountain in Jesus Avenue
It is a fountain with a big stone pool and two jets. It has the city’s coat of arms in the centre. The great originality resides in its water’s origin, since the water from its right jet
comes from Confín spring in the Sierra, and the water from its left jet comes directly
from the town council’s supply system.
Nowadays the fountain is used to satisfy the passer-by’s thirst. Nonetheless, traditionally
it was also used by the beasts of burden, such as mules or donkeys. A proof is the hooks
that still exist on the wall where the fountain is.
Not long ago an old man famous by his wicker baskets manufactured in the traditional
way turned up daily.

Going down along Conde de Tendillas Street, the most known fountain is.
2. Moorish girl or 25 jets Fountain and Borbollote Spring
It is Loja’s fountain par excellence, whose image appears again and again in postcards,
pamphlets and souvenirs of the town. It is in La Alfaguara neighbourhood, next to Borbollote Spring (the old laundry), and near the disappeared medieval gates: Water or

Hoy día su función es meramente decorativa, aunque aún su agua es potable, por lo
que es muy normal ver a los lojeños aliviar su sed al pasar por allí. Fue restaurada en
el año 2000 por los alumnos de la escuela Taller Maíz de Castro, el material utilizado
para esta reconstrucción fue el granito. La fuente está realizada sobre un muro de
mampostería que separa la Plaza de la Alfaguara de la calle Tinte y Tenerías, sus caños están alineados horizontalmente y el agua de éstos cae a un abrevadero común.
Nos dirigimos hacia el casco histórico de la ciudad, subiendo por Tinte y Tenerías y
calle Comedias hasta desembocar en la calle Real que nos conducirá hasta la Plaza
de la Constitución o Plaza de Arriba.
3. Pilar de la Plaza Constitución
Constituye una de las estampas más emblemáticas de Loja por su situación, ya que
puede observarse la torre de la Iglesia Mayor a sus espaldas. El pilar de la plaza se
abastece del manantial llamado también de la Plaza. El primitivo se encontraba cerca
de la Cuesta del Santo Cristo, comenzando la obra en 1510 Pedro López - Puente de
Loja sobre el Genil - y terminándola Pedro de Albelda. En 1579 Domingo Hernández
construye el nuevo pilar con tres caños, que permanecería hasta finales del s. XIX,
cuando, tras diversas reformas, el pilar queda con dos caños que vertían sus aguas
sobre sendas piletas en forma de conchas. Es en 1889 cuando José Pacetti, vecino
de la Plaza costeó el actual pilar de hierro con cuatro caños y las mismas piletas junto a una farola.
Patrimonio: Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnación, Centro de Interpretación Histórico y
Punto de Información Turística, Bronce del General Narváez.
Si seguimos la calle empedrada hacia la calle Duque de Valencia nos toparemos con
el Ayuntamiento -antiguo Palacio de Narváez- y con la cuarta fuente.
4. Fuente de la Plaza del
Ayuntamiento (del Moco)
Situada en el transcurso de la
calle Duque de Valencia junto al
monumento que hermana las
ciudades de Loja y Loja de
Ecuador y a escasos metros del
palacio del General Narváez, hoy
día casa consistorial, en pleno
centro de la ciudad. Es una de
las fuentes más queridas por los
lojeños, se le atribuye este nombre por el verdín que cada cierto
tiempo la cubre casi por completo. Es una fuente de pie con
una bañera de diámetro mayor
en su base y con otra menor en
su cúspide.
Patrimonio: Ayuntamiento (Antiguo Palacio de Narváez).
Ahora bajamos los escalones de la calle Zacatín hasta la Plaza Joaquín Costa -Plaza
de Abajo- donde se encuentra el mercado.

Water Route
Alfaguara Gate and Archidona Gate. The
origin of this district goes back to the
epoch of Muslim occupation, although
the present fountain dates from the
17th century. The neighbours used it
for their supply, since in this period
there was not running water in their
abodes.
Nowadays its function is simply decorative, although its water is drinkable, the
reason why it is usual seeing people taking water. It was restored in the year
2000 by Maíz de Castro Work-school’s
pupils. The granite was the material
used for this reconstruction.
The fountain is made on a masonry
wall which divides Alfaguara Square
and Tinte y Tenerías Street. Its jets line
up horizontally and the water falls in
the same pool.
Going towards the city’s town centre,
up along Tinte y Tenerías Street, we
shall find Real Street, which will lead us
to Constitución Square.
3. Pilar in Constitución Square
It constitutes one of the most emblematic appearances in Loja because of its
situation, since the main church’s tower can be observed behind. This fountain supplies
itself from the square’s source. The original one was near Santo Cristo Slope, Pedro
López began the work in 1510 -Loja’s Bridge over the river Genil- and Pedro de Albelda
finished it. In 1579 Domingo Hernández built the new fountain with three jets, which remained until the end of the 19th century, when, after several repairs, the fountain kept
two jets that poured its waters in two small shell-shaped pools. In 1889 José Pacetti, a
square’s neighbour, covered the costs of the present iron fountain with four jets and the
same pools and with a lamppost in the centre.

Going along the stone-paved Duque de Valencia Street, we shall bump into the Town Hall
-the old Narváez’s Palace- and into the fourth fountain.
4. Fountain in the Town Hall Square (mucus fountain)
It is situated in Duque de Valencia Street, next to the monument of the brotherhood between Loja in Spain and Loja in Ecuador, and it is scarce metres from Narváez’s Palace,
the current city hall, full in the city’s centre. It is one of the most beloved fountains. This
nickname is attributed because of the greenness that covers it almost completely every
so often. It is standing on a foot and has a bathtub with a bigger diameter on its base and
another one with a smaller diameter at the top.

5. Fuente de la Plaza Joaquín Costa o del Pósito
Situada en la Plaza de Abajo o de Joaquín Costa, data del año 1948, según está inscrito en la frontada. El material empleado para construirse fue la piedra. Su forma es
simple, de estructura cuadrangular. Es muy concurrida por su situación, aunque en
otra época se usaba para llenar los cántaros y para los animales.
Cabe destacar el Pósito, edificio que data del s. XVI y fue utilizado como almacén de
grano y de herramientas de labranza. Otros usos posteriores fueron cárcel, cuartel y
posada. En la actualidad pasará a ser sede de la fundación cultural “Ibn Al-Jatib” y
Centro de Iniciativas Culturales.
Próxima se encuentra la puerta de
Jaufín (s. XI-XII), una de las huellas
que se mantienen del periodo almorávide y que formaba parte de la desaparecida muralla externa de Medina Lawsa (la ciudad árabe de Loja).

Now we go down stairs along Zacatín Street to Joaquín Costa Square -the bottom square- where the market is.
5. Fountain in Joaquín Costa Square or Pósito Fountain
It is located in the bottom square or Joaquín Costa Square. It dates from the year
1948, according to the inscription on the front part. The stone was the material used
for its construction. Its shape is simple, with quadrangular structure. The place is very
busy because of its situation, although in the old days it was used to fill pitchers and
for the animals.
The Pósito stands out, building which dates from the 16th century. It was used for the
storage of the grain and cultivation tools. Other subsequent uses were: prison, quarters
and guest house. Shortly it will be the office of Ibn Al-Jatib cultural foundation and Cultural Initiatives Centre.
Jaufín Gate (11th-12th century) is close, one of the almoravid remains. It was part of
the disappeared external Medina Lawsa’s walls (the Arab city of Loja).

6. Fuente del Mercado
Se encuentra en el Mercado Municipal de Abastos. Construida en
mármol blanco y azulejos típicos
granadinos, ha sufrido varias restauraciones a lo largo del tiempo.
Su motivo es puramente decorativo.
Nos dirigimos ahora hacia el histórico Barrio de la Alcazaba, subiendo por la calle
Tiendas hasta la Plaza de la Constitución. A la derecha del Centro de Interpretación
Histórico nos encontramos con el arco de herradura que constituye el acceso al Barrio, lo atravesamos y empezamos la subida por la cuesta del Señor. La primera se
encuentra en la calle Boabdil y la segunda en la plaza Nazarí.
7. Fuente de la Alcazaba
Centro histórico por antonomasia de la ciudad, a tan sólo unos metros del Caserón
de los Alcaides Cristianos (actual Museo de la Ciudad) y de la Torre del Homenaje.
La fuente tiene forma de abrevadero y el material utilizado en su construcción es la
piedra, se usa para beber. Se encuentra enclavada en una hornacina dentro de un muro de ladrillo
visto, es una fuente de construcción reciente.

superior, está hecha en mármol y su

6. Fountain in the Market
It is at the local market’s entrance. It is built with white marble and typical tiles of Granada. It has stood up to restorations time after time. Its motive is only ornamental.
Now we go towards the historic Alcazaba neighbourhood, going up along Tiendas Street
to Constitución Square. On the right of the Historic Interpretation Centre there is a horseshoe arch, which is the entry to this neighbourhood. The first fountain is on Boabdil
Street and the second one is on Nazarí Square.

A destacar el empedrado de la Plaza y algunas de las casas con jardines y huertas,
siendo algunas de ellas viviendas turísticas de alojamiento rural.
Patrimonio: Caserón de los Alcaides Cristianos (Actual Museo de la Ciudad), Patio de
Armas, Torre del Homenaje, Torre- Mirador Arqueológico.
Tras la Torre - Mirador comenzamos la bajada por la escalonada calle Moraima y Jaufín hasta llegar a la Plaza de San Gabriel.
9. Fuente de los Victorios o de la Plaza San Gabriel
Actualmente esta fuente se encuentra en la Plaza de San Gabriel, aunque no siempre
fue así. Fue inaugurada en el patio claustral del Convento de la Victoria, hoy día Colegio del mismo nombre, más tarde pasó a la Plaza Nueva (Abastos) y al Paseo del
Haza hasta finalizar en su actual ubicación. De grandes dimensiones, está levantada
sobre una pequeña base octogonal. Posee cuatro figuras de cuerpo estilizado y rostro semejante al de un león, en cuyas faces aparecen los cuatro caños de donde
mana el agua, mirando a la figura central con forma de jarrón o vasija. Su función es
meramente ornamental, no siendo sus aguas potables.
Junto a la portada lateral de la Iglesia se construyó la placeta y las gradillas de San
Gabriel en lo que antiguamente era un descansadero para el ganado, para dar una
plaza a la recién construida Iglesia de San Gabriel, lugar que ocupó el Pilar de las Damas, hoy día situado justo enfrente de la Iglesia.
La segunda plaza, frente a la portada principal de la Iglesia, la más austera, se construye en 1974 con escalinatas hasta donde se trasladó la fuente de los Victorios rodeada por cadenas de hierro y una baranda, al estilo romántico.
Recientemente ambas placetas han sufrido obras de restauración.

7. Alcazaba Fountain
It is in the town historic centre, a few metres from the Christian Governors’ House (the present city’s museum) and from Homage Tower.
The fountain is bathtub-shaped and the material used for its construction was the stone. It is used for drinking. It is installed in a concavity
inside a brick wall. Its construction is recent.
8. Fountain in Alcazaba Square
This fountain, situated in this popular neighbourhood, has an octagonal base, where the water coming from the small bowl in the upper
part falls. It is made of marble, and its function is merely decorative.
The stone paving and some of the houses with gardens are outstanding. Some of these houses are rural tourist housing.
Inheritance: Christian Governors’ House (present City’s Historic Museum), Arms Courtyard, Homage Tower, Turret-Archaeological Viewpoint.
After the Turret - Viewpoint, we go down the stairs along Moraima
and Jaufín Streets to San Gabriel Square.
9. Victorios Fountain in San Gabriel Square
Nowadays this fountain is in San Gabriel Square, although it was not
always there. It was inaugurated in Victoria Convent’s cloister patio, at
present a school with the same name. Later it was moved to the New
Square (Market) and Haza Avenue, until ending up being in its current
situation.
It is big size, raised on a small octagonal base. It has four slim figures
with lion-shaped faces, in whose jaws the four jets of water are, round
the central vase-shaped figure.
Its function is merely ornamental, and its water is not drinkable.
Next to the church’s lateral door, San Gabriel square and the steps
were built on the former livestock stopping place, to give a square to
the recently constructed San Gabriel Church, place which the Pilar
de las Damas occupied. Nowadays the latest fountain is opposite the
church.
The second square, opposite the church’s main door, the most austere
one, was built in 1974 with a staircase. Victorios Fountain was moved
there. It was surrounded with iron chains and a rail, in the romantic style.
Recently both squares have been restored.

10. Pilar de las Damas
Remontando la calle Garzón Pérez y pasando la Iglesia de San Gabriel, podremos escuchar el susurro del chapoteo de dos caños de agua cristalina que brotan de la fuente conocida como el Pilar de las Damas.
Si nos detenemos en las formas de esta fuente que refresca las gargantas de los lojeños, encontraremos una sencilla pero sugestiva fuente realizada en piedra y mármol.
En sus inicios esta fuente se encontraba situada en el paseo Haza, justo al otro lado
del puente, desde donde se trasladó hasta la placeta lateral de San Gabriel, y ya en
los 90 a su emplazamiento actual.

10. Pilar de las Damas
Going along Garzón Pérez Street and beside San Gabriel Church, we
shall hear the whisper caused by the splash of the crystalline water that
comes from the fountain’s two jets. It is known as Ladies Fountain.
If we stop to look at the shapes of this fountain, which refreshes the
neighbours’ throats, we shall see a simple, but at the same time attractive, fountain made of stone and marble.
At first it was situated in Haza Avenue, just crossing the bridge.

Situada junto a la antigua estación de ferrocarril de Loja. Para llegar, tomar la N- 321
hasta la curva donde se encuentra el Instituto de Educación Secundaria Moraima. A
nuestra derecha veremos un carril y la estación de Ferrocarril, tras la cual se encuentra la fuente al margen derecho. El agua de esta fuente tiene un secreto para el que no
la conoce, que en verano el agua es fría y en invierno es templada, además de preservar la juventud de los que beben de ella. Cuando existían las máquinas de vapor era
frecuentada por los ferroviarios y los vecinos de la barriada de la Esperanza, que acudían a ella para aliviar la sed y recogerla en cántaros.
3. Fuente del Paraíso
No es tan especial la fuente como el recorrido hasta ella. Esta fuente la encontramos
de camino hacia la Cola del Caballo en el paraje de los Infiernos Altos. El agua mana
de la roca caliza. Dependiendo del caudal del río Genil la encontramos a ras del suelo
o a mayor altura.

It is situated next to the old railway station. To arrive there, going along the road N-321
to the curve where Moraima Secondary Education Institute is, on the right there is a
track and the railway station, behind which the fountain is, on the right side. This fountain’s water has a secret: in summer it is cold and in winter it is lukewarm, moreover it
preserves the people’s youth. When there were vapour locomotives, the railway workers and Esperanza’s neighbours visited the fountain frequently to alleviate the thirst
and to fill pitchers.
3. Paraíso Fountain
The fountain is not so special as the journey to it. Paradise Fountain is on the way to
Cola del Caballo waterfall at the spot: Infiernos Altos. The water comes through the limestone. Depending on Genil river’s volume, it is at ground level or higher.

La ciudad ofrece además la alternativa de la escalada, dada su orografía - valle
rodeado de sierras -. Existen en Loja dos zonas para la práctica de este deporte: Las
Zorreras, en la Sierra de Loja (sur), y el Monte Hacho (norte).
En las Zorreras se reunen diez sectores (cuatro pertenecen a las Zorreras Bajas y seis
a Zorreras Altas), a los que hay que añadir los tres sectores en El Hacho.
Dónde: vías instaladas en Sierra de Loja (Las Zorreras, Paso de la Burra) y Monte Hacho.
Cómo llegar: Sierra de Loja (apartado Sierra de Loja y el paisaje lunar). Monte Hacho
(apartado Donde no te encuentre nadie).
The city also offers the alternative of climbing, given its geography - valley surrounded
with mountains -. In Loja there are two zones for the practice of this sport: Zorreras, in
Sierra of Loja (south), and Monte Hacho (north).
In Zorreras there are ten sectors (four belonging to Low Zorreras and six to High
Zorreras), to which the three sectors in Hacho have to be added up.

REGIMEN DE PESCA
Permite pescar en sus aguas a lo largo de todo el año, excepto lunes no festivos.
El número máximo de permisos expedidos por día es de 10, exceptuando fines de semana y festivos que se expiden un máximo de 15. Es necesario poseer la licencia de pesca
para obtener el permiso. El número máximo de capturas por persona y día es de 8.
FISHING REGIME
Fishing is allowed throughout the year, except for working Mondays.
The maximum number of permits served per day is 10, excepting weekends and holidays, when the maximum is 15. Owning the fishing licence is needed to get the permit.
The maximum number of captures per person and day is 8.
QUÉ SE NECESITA PARA PESCAR EN RIOFRÍO
Antes de llegar a Riofrío, necesitas tener la licencia de pesca. Este documento se puede obtener en cualquier Delegación Provincial de Medioambiente de la Junta de Andalucía en cualquier provincia andaluza. Se debe solicitar una licencia de pesca con recargo para trucha. Una vez que esté en posesión de la licencia de pesca, puede pescar
siempre que quiera solamente con reservar el permiso poniéndose en contacto con la
oficina del Coto. Una vez que ha hecho su reserva, solamente tiene que recoger su
permiso de pesca el mismo día. El permiso de pesca para un día da derecho a llevarse
8 capturas. También existe la posibilidad de adquirir un permiso sin muerte, cuyo precio es la mitad. Los medios permisos (martes a jueves, a partir de las 15.00 horas)
permiten capturar 4 piezas y su precio es igual al permiso de pesca sin muerte.
Cebos permitidos: se permiten sólo cebos artificiales: cucharilla, mosca, imitaciones
de peces y vinilos. Queda expresamente prohibido la utilización de masillas independientemente de su composición.
WHAT IS NEEDED TO FISH IN RIOFRÍO
Before coming to Riofrío: owning the fishing licence is needed. This document may be
obtained in the Delegación Provincial de Medioambiente de la Junta de Andalucía (Province’s Office for Environmental Issues of Andalusian Government). This fishing licence
must be charged for trout fishing. Once the fishing licence is owned: booking the permit
contacting Riofrío’s Fishing Reserve Office is needed.
Once the permit has been booked:
The fishing permit must be picked up at the fishing reserve office the same day, which
allows to fish 8 trouts. No death fishing is also possible, which is half-price. Half fishing
permit (from Tuesday to Thursday starting at 15.00 p m) you can catch four pieces and
the price is the same as the fishing permit without death.
Baits allowed: only artificial baits are allowed: spinning, fly, imitations of fishes and vinyl.
The use of putties, not up to its composition, is specifically forbidden.

Para los más intrépidos, existen otros lugares en Loja que destacan por su belleza.
Salinas de Fuente Camacho
De origen romano, las salinas aún hoy día se siguen utilizando. Para llegar al lugar tomar desvío hacia Fuente Camacho desde la A- 92 dirección Málaga. Una vez lleguemos a la pedanía, tomar un camino rural dirección Riofrío. A medio camino entre ambos anejos nos toparemos con los restos romanos.
Existe otro camino que sale a la derecha a pocos metros tras pasar la Venta del Rayo
(pedanía de Loja situada en la A- 341, antigua carretera de Málaga).
La Isla y el Albarracín
Como su propio nombre indica, la isla es una porción de terreno completamente rodeada por las aguas del río Genil. Atención al puente colgante para pasar de una orilla a otra. Dada la complejidad de la ruta, para llegar al paraje se recomienda hacerse
con una buena guía de senderismo o un monitor. Itinerario descrito en guía “Conoce
Loja paso a paso. 14 rutas por su entorno”.
Paisaje recomendable para realizar la ruta en coche. Impresionantes vistas de una de
las zonas mejores conservadas de la comarca. Existen en esta ruta establecimientos
rurales insertos en el medio natural. Personajes de la sociedad española tienen en
esta zona residencias.
Para llegar tomar la carretera A- 341 dirección Iznájar, y, a 10 minutos pasada la Venta
de Santa Bárbara, tomar desvío a mano izquierda dirección apartamentos rurales.
El Frontil
Nacimiento El Frontil
Se observa el nacimiento de agua, formando un pequeño lago que alberga patos y
ocas. Muy cerca se encuentra una de las piscifactorías lojeñas, que recoge el agua directa del nacimiento para la cría de la trucha.
Para llegar, tomar la carretera N- 321 dirección Priego de Córdoba hasta llegar al polígono industrial El Frontil, citando como referencia el desvío a la derecha tras divisar
el Club de Tenis con el mismo nombre.

4. WHERE NOBODY FINDS YOU
For the most intrepid, there are other places in Loja which are outstanding because
of its beauty.
Salinas of Fuente Camacho
This salt source, from the Roman period,
is still in use nowadays. To get to this place, from the dual carriageway A-92, in the
direction of Malaga, there is a detour to
Fuente Camacho. Once in this village, there is a rural road towards Riofrío. The Roman remains can be found halfway between both villages.
There is another way, on the right, a few
metres after Venta del Rayo, (an attached
village belonging to Loja, placed in the road
A-341, old road to Malaga).
Isla and Albarracín
As its own name indicates, the isle is a
portion of land completely surrounded
with the river Genil’s water. The suspension bridge to cross from one bank to the
other attracts attention.
Given the complexity of the route, to arrive to this place it is recommended a good
trekking guide-book. More information:
Local Tourist Board of Loja.
It is recommended to go by car. Impressive views of one of the best preserved zones in the region. Here there is rural housing inserted in the natural environment.
Celebrities of the national society own residences in this zone.
To get here, in the road A-341, in the direction of Iznájar, a detour to the left, with
a sign of rural apartments, will be found
10 minutes after the village: Venta de Santa Bárbara, and leads to this area.
Frontil Spring
The source of water forms a small lake which shelters ducks and gooses. One of Loja’s fish farm is very near. It is supplied with the water of this source, for the breeding
of the trout.
To arrive here, on the road N-321, in the direction of Priego de Córdoba, there is a detour to the right after making out Frontil Tennis Club, where the signal of the industrial
estate with the same name is.
DONDE NO TE ENCUENTRE NADIE
Fuente Santa
Muy conocida durante la Edad Moderna, sus
aguas fueron las primeras de denominación de
origen en España. Cuentan que ya la Reina Isabel de Castilla hizo que le enviaran jarras lacradas conteniendo sus aguas. Su fama hizo que
se construyera la fuente a finales del s. XVI, de
estilo manierista. Durante el s. XVII se construyeron los baños, uno para mujeres y otro
para hombres, debido a la gran confluencia de
personas que asistían a probar sus propiedades. La fuente se encuentra en la urbanización
con el mismo nombre. Para llegar, nos situamos en la Avda. Andalucía siguiendo la dirección Sevilla-Málaga. Al llegar al polígono industrial Fuente Santa nos encontramos un
cruce. Tomamos la dirección Sevilla- Málaga y
acto seguido nos volvemos a desviar a la derecha hacia la Venta Fuente Santa, cerca de la
cual se encuentra la fuente.

Fuente Santa
This spring was well-known during the Modern Age, its water was the first with origin denomination in Spain. It is told the Queen Isabel of Castilla ordered jars of this water with
sealing wax. Its fame made the fountain was built in mannerist style at the end of 16th
century. During the 17th century the baths, one for women and another one for men,
were constructed, due to the large number of visitors who went to try out its properties.
The fountain is in the housing estate with the same name. Following the Andalucía Avenue,
in the direction of Seville/Malaga, Fuente Santa industrial estate is found, where there is a
crossroads, and to the right, behind Venta Fuente Santa Restaurant, the fountain is.
Barrancón Bridge
It was built by Eiffel school. It is an ideal place for the practice of bungee jumping. On the
road A-341, in the direction of Venta del Rayo/Zafarraya, 300 or 400 metres after passing
the village Venta del Rayo, there is a track to the right.
Infiernos Bajos
Another emblematic place of Loja, formed by Genil river pushing in through the lands of
Plines. There is a prepared viewpoint. The access is difficult, it is recommended a good
trekking guide-book.
Fuente Santa
Puente Barrancón
Construido por la escuela de Eiffel, constituye un lugar ideal para la práctica de puenting. Para llegar tomar un carril a la derecha, a unos 300-400 mts. aproximadamente
pasada la Venta del Rayo (A-341, dirección Venta del Rayo- Zafarraya).
Los Infiernos Bajos
Otro emblemático lugar de Loja, formado por el encajonamiento del río Genil a su
paso por tierras de Plines. Existe un mirador acondicionado. De difícil acceso, para llegar hasta él se recomienda hacerse con una buena guía de senderismo o un monitor.

El Monte Hacho
La subida se hace desde la estación de ferrocarril de Loja. Existen varios puntos desde donde se divisan maravillosas perspectivas del territorio, una de ellas, junto a los
restos de la ermita del Calvario. Nos encontramos una segunda subida desde la N321 hacia los Ventorros de San José.
Los Arenales
A las espaldas del Monte Hacho, existe un lugar donde parece que el tiempo se para.
Existen varios alojamientos rurales en el entorno. Para llegar, tomar la N-321 hacia
Ventorros de San José, y aproximadamente a mitad de camino nos encontramos con
el desvío (no demasiado señalizado).

Monte Hacho
The ascent begins from Loja’s railway station. There are several spots from which wonderful panoramas of the territory can be distinguished, one of them is by Calvario Hermitage
remains. A second way is from the road N-321 towards the village Ventorros de San José.
Los Arenales
Behind Monte Hacho there is a place where it seems time stops. There is rural housing in
the setting. To arrive here, one must take the road N-321 towards Ventorros de San José
and, approximately halfway along the road, it is the detour (not well signposted).

DEL AGUA
El futuro Centro de Interpretación del Agua se ubicará en la zona residencial "Entre
Puentes", en donde albergará una exposición permanente sobre los diversos aspectos del agua en la ciudad y municipio de Loja y sus usos.
Asimismo contará con sala de exposiciones temporales y servicios técnicos de control analítico de aguas, asi como sala de usos múltiples y sala de audiovisuales.
El propio edificio, un cubo de cristal que sus autores, unos arquitectos catalanes
nombraron como Ice Cube, es una apuesta para la arquitectura moderna y de vanguardia, que podemos disfrutar en pleno corazón de la ciudad.

6. WATER
The future Water Interpretation Centre will be situated in the housing estate "Entre Puentes (between bridges)", and will shelter a permanent display about the different aspects of
the water in the city and Loja's municipality and its uses.
Likewise it will boast a temporary exhibition room and technical services of water analytic
control, as well as a conference room and audiovisual supports.
The building itself, a glass cube the authors, Catalan architects, named Ice Cube, is a
bet on the modern and avant-garde architecture, which can be enjoyed in the town's
core.
