Here we are once again at this great Advent Season, when we
stand on the threshold of Christmas joy. With the first Sunday of Advent,
we have now embarked upon a new liturgical year, even as we also pray
for a joyous and prosperous year of grace of 2015.

Since our last parish newsletter, we have gathered as a parish for an informative
study of the Holy Mass. We have also renovated space in the parish hall for a nursery for
our little ones, set to open in early January. And as I write this message, we are approaching
Holy Day Masses 8 AM & 6 PM
our Advent Parish Mission – together with Saint Mary’s Parish – which will deepen our

appreciation for Eucharistic Adoration. We also look forward eagerly to the wonderful
celebrations surrounding the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room

This is such a lovely time of year, the leaves are turning, the wind is crisp…and in the blink of
the eye I have a startling realization of how quickly this year has flown by. I look in the mirror,
and I see a face askew with sudden panic, anxiety and weariness and I have not even begun
tackling the events that whirl in my head… have I confirmed the poinsettias order for the
church, do we need more, should I order less… and just where did we store the plethora of
beauties that we use during the realm of our Christmas Season? I refuse to allow my brain
to wonder to the fact that I have yet to buy a gift – who needs those things anyway, right? My
heart sinks with the feeling that I am already behind before I have even started.
~~~~ I am not prepared ~~~
Those four words, in a split second sends a rush of emotions, my heart smiles while my eyes
fill with the blur of tears with the memories of my dear friend, Father Linus. You see, years
ago I had invited Father to our house at the last minute for dinner. His response, “No Lisa, I
must not, I am not prepared.” He had not completed his homily for the next day. For reasons unclear to me at the time, I never understood why, but that verse became something of
a muse between many and Fr. Linus… but it had to be spoken in that beautiful, lyrical, enunciation he had of the English language, accompanied with that beautiful smile, glorious laugh
and the warmth of a dear friend who found a place in my heart forever.
Now, fast forward – a few weeks ago Kelly asked me if I would write a piece about Advent,
she said that God kept putting my name in her heart. ME? PANIC! ME?! No, nope, nada.
God has given me many graces, an artist, a really good cook (which is not necessarily a good
thing, you’re rarely are taken out to dinner), love floral arranging… but I am not a writer, and
certainly cannot carry a tune. Then the guilt set in after telling Kelly “NO” …maybe I will
google it, I know about Advent, but I do not really KNOW about Advent… the first word that
pop ups when googling Advent - - Prepare - -. I certainly am not going to say no with these
signs from above, I heard them loud and clear. I am still slightly panicked but I do have a
smile on my face, and a thankful heart. I WILL write my thoughts, my lay interpretation of
Advent.
It encompasses many days to reflect and yes, to prepare. A time that enables us to clear our
hearts and dispel the fear and the despair in an age which seems to be losing hope and
Christian morals, Advent is our chance to prepare and fill our hearts, homes and families and
yes, even strangers, with the comfort of the living faith and grace of our Lord… Love Incarnate to be born again.
So, how do we do this? We hold the answers within us… we not only go to Mass, we embrace it, we breathe in His message and apply it to our lives. His word is indeed meant for
each and everyone of us. Healing words… comforting words. We need to sing, and sing loud
& proud! We are so very blessed to have such a glorious choir with John Jordan at the
helm… let the music move you… be your prayer, when you don’t know the words to say.
Know that God has created this framework of the liturgical season in order to prepare us for
His coming. Focus on our Advent candles for they represent Jesus Christ… the light of the
world. View the magnificence of our Mother Church, note the Advent color of purple which
represents repentance and expectation, which is the heart and spirit of the season. We are
being prepared to receive extraordinary graces if we indeed clear our hearts and allow this
season to embrace us.
My focus for Advent, the days to come will be spent in constant preparation… bring on the
candles, the choir, the Christmas music. Absorb myself in the special liturgical time and
prayer. Fill the air with magical scents. Advent is a road that I plan to travel with the heartfelt attention to all that I find along my path. I vow to practice at least one random act of
kindness each day. A smile can change the

Que Cada Corazón prepare un Lugar Especial para EL.
Este es un tiempo tan hermoso del año. Las hojas están cambiando, el viento es fresco …. y con un cerrar de ojos todo cambio y me di cuenta que este año ya se marcho. Yo me veo en el espejo y veo mi cara se ve diferente; debido al pánico repentino, ansiedad y cansancio porque me di cuenta que todavía no he comenzado a abordar los eventos que le están dando vuelta en mi cabeza… ¿llegue a confirmar la orden de las flores de noche buena para la Iglesia, necesitaremos mas o tal vez menos?…
Yo rechazo a que mi mente comience a pensar que todavía no he comprado regalos - ¿Pero quién los necesita ahora? Mi corazón se hunde de sentimientos por estar atrasada en las cosas que debo hacer y ni siquiera he comenzado. --- Yo no estoy
preparada --En un segundo estas cuatro palabras hacen que me llene de emociones: mi corazón se ríe mientras que mis ojos se ponen
borrosos de lágrima por las memorias que tengo de mi estimado amigo Padre Linus. Años atrás y a último minuto, invite al
Padre Linus a nuestra casa para cenar. Su respuesta fue:”No Lisa, No debo porque no estoy preparado.” El no había completado su homilía para el siguiente día. Por razones no claras en ese momento; yo nunca entendí porque esas palabras entre
otras me hacían meditar … pero estas palabras tenían que ser habladas en esa forma hermosa, lirica y bella pronunciación
que el Padre Linus tenía en Ingles; acompañadas por su hermosa sonrisa y el cariño de un gran estimado amigo quien encontró para siempre un lugar en mi corazón.
Ahora yéndonos al pasado. Hace una semanas atrás Kelly me pidió que si podría escribir algo sobre Adviento. Ella me dijo
que Dios le ponía su nombre en su corazón. ¿Yo? ¡Entre en Pánico! ¿Yo? No, nada de nada. Dios me ha otorgado muchas
gracias: el poder ser artista, buena cocinera (lo cual no es algo tan bueno porque pocas veces voy a comer afuera), amo
hacer arreglos florales… pero no soy escritora y por supuesto no puedo cantar ningún tono musical. Y luego que hable con
Kelly me sentí culpable por haberle dicho que “No” ….. Tal vez podría buscar la información en google. Yo sé sobre
Adviento pero realmente no sé nada sobre Adviento… la primera palabra que encontré al buscar en google fue “Preparación”.
Pero ciertamente no puedo decir que no a ciertas señales que siento y que vienen desde arriba. Las escucho claras y fuertes.
Yo todavía me siento en pánico pero tengo una sonrisa en mi rostro y un corazón de agradecimiento. YO ESCRIBIRE MIS PENSAMIENTOS, mi propia interpretación de Advien to.
Todo esto me abarco muchos días de reflexión y sí de preparación. En tiempos en que nos permite aclarar nuestros corazones y de sacar nuestros temores en estos años en donde se ve que estamos perdiendo esperanza y perdiendo los morales
cristianos. Adviento es nuestra oportunidad para prepararnos y para llenar nuestros corazones, hogares y familias. Y ¡Sí! aun
hasta extraños sabiendo y teniendo fe y gracia del Señor ….. El Amor se reencarna al nacer otra vez.
Pero. ¿Cómo hacemos esto? Nosotros mantenemos la respuesta entre nosotros …. nosotros no solo vamos a Misa. Nosotros
la acogemos. Nosotros respiramos en su mensaje y lo aplicamos en nuestras vidas. Su palabra tiene un significado definitivo
para cada uno de nosotros. Palabras de curación ….
Palabras de consuelo. ¡Nosotros necesitamos cantar fuerte y con orgullo! Nosotros estamos muy bendecidos
en tener el coro que tenemos con John Jordan al mando… que la música nos mueva… que sea su oración
cuando no sepan las palabras que desean decir. Sepan que Dios creyó esta temporada litúrgica para que
así nos preparemos para su llegada. Pongan atención en las velas que representan a Jesús Cristo… la luz del mundo.
Vean la magnificencia de nuestra Madre la Virgen María. Tomen nota del color morado que re presenta arrepentí
miento y expectación el cual es el corazón y espíritu de esta temporada de Adviento. No
sotros estamos siendo
preparados para recibir gracias extraordinarias si es que aclaramos nuestros corazones y abrasamos esta tempora
da de Adviento.
El estar enfocados en Adviento es el pasar cada día en constante preparación…. prendan las velas, el coro, la música
de Navidad. Me absorbo a mi misma en un tiempo litúrgico especial y de oración. Llenen el aire con aromas mágicos.
Adviento es una ruta que planeo viajar con un corazón lleno de atención con todo lo que encuentre en mi camino. Yo
prometo que cada día hare por lo menos una acción de generosidad. Una sonrisa puede cambiar el corazón de un
extraño que se sienta inadvertido.
En esta temporada de Adviento; SEAN el cambio, SIENTAN el cambio, ABRACEN el cambio y COMPARTAN el
gozo que reciban.
¿Por qué celebramos Adviento? Porque lo NECESITAMOS.

Nicholas, An Advent Saint
Advent is the time when Christians prepare to greet Christ—
who came as a babe in a manger, who comes into our lives
each day, and who will come again at the end of time. Advent is the time when people of faith are most at odds with
the culture. The Church calls people to focus on getting
ready to receive Christ—preparing hearts and lives to make
room for Jesus, to live as he would have us live. It is a time of longing, not fulfillment. Quiet reflection, not celebration. The culture,
however, is already in a time of festivity, unable or unwilling, to wait
and contemplate and prepare for the real festival. It is not easy to
observe Advent without being pulled prematurely into Christmas.
How does St. Nicholas fit into all of this? He is an Advent saint because his December 6th feast day always falls in early Advent. may
not be as important as the way he did it. Nicholas became so popular because he was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His life clearly
reflected the way each one of us is called to show God's love to others, especially those in need.
This Advent instead of asking, "What do you want for Christmas?"

Un Santo de Adviento, Nicolás
Adviento es un tiempo cuando los cristianos se preparan para darle
la bienvenida a Cristo - quien vino como bebe, quien vino a
nuestras vidas cada día y quien vendrá de nuevo al final de
los tiempos.
Adviento es el tiempo en el que las personas de fe tienen
muchas ventajas con la cultura. La Iglesia llama a la gente
para que se enfoque a prepararse para recibir a Cristo –
preparando sus corazones y para que hagan un espacio
para Jesús, para vivir como Él nos dejaría que lo hagamos. Es un
tiempo de anhelo, no de cumplimiento. Es un tiempo de reflexión y
no de celebración. La cultura está ya en festividades es capaz o se
ponen reacios en esperar la Navidad y también no desean preparar
para el gran festival. No es fácil observar Adviento sin poder entrar
prematuramente dentro de la Navidad.
¿Cómo es que San Nicolás entra en todo esto? Él es el Santo de
Adviento debido a que su día de celebración es el 6 de Diciembre y
cae durante el comienzo de Adviento. El Santo Nicolás se hizo muy
popular debido a que fue un seguidor fiel de Jesús Cristo. Su vida
claramente refleja el cómo cada uno de nosotros debemos ser para
mostrar el amor de Dios hacia otros; especialmente a los más necesitados.

December 12, 2014 - Our Lady of Guadalupe Today we celebrate Mary, the Mother of Jesus, Mother of the Church and our Mother. She
also guides us in this, the new liturgical year. We need to imitate Mary and meditate during this Advent in the Incarnation of the Lord among
us. In many households the mother of Jesus has a very special. The Hispanic community honors Mary under various titles: Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre in Cuba, Our Lady of Peace in El Salvador, Our Lady of Divine Providence in Puerto Rico, for example. But we understand that it
is the same Virgin Mary, but under different patronages.
Today we celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas and messenger of truth and love. Love was shown in her appearance
to St. Juan Diego in 1531. The purpose of her appearance has not gone away, in fact each year brings us to the a new commitment to do
something important in the Kingdom of God. What are we doing personally, family and community to make this happen? Recall that Our Lady
is as human as we are. The Virgin Mary also struggled in life as we do now, with the
only exception that she was cleansed of sin at the moment of her conception, chosen
by God to be His dwelling, and was a
beloved disciple of Our Lord. Therefore
imitate Mary this Advent and ask her
to help us understand our role in the
Church. As we prepare to receive
Jesus; Mary, Mother of the Church,
pray for us!
12 de Diciembre de 2014 Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Hoy celebramos a María, que es
la Madre de Jesús, la Madre de la Iglesia y Madre nuestra. Ella también nos guía en este
nuevo año litúrgico que acabamos de comenzar. Es necesario que imitemos a María y
meditemos durante este Adviento en la Encarnación del Señor entre nosotros. Comprendo
que en muchos hogares de la comunidad hispana y de otras comunidades la Madre de Jesús tiene un lugar muy especial en nuestra vida.
La comunidad hispana tiene la dicha de honrar a María bajo diferentes advocaciones: Nuestra Señora de la Caridad del Cobre en Cuba,
Nuestra Señora de la Paz en El Salvador, Nuestra Señora de la Divina Providencia en Puerto Rico, por ejemplo. Pero comprendamos que es
la misma Virgen María, pero bajo diferente advocación, según cada país mencionado.
Hoy celebramos a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Patrona de las Américas y mensajera de la verdad y el amor. Amor que demostró en su
aparición a san Juan Diego en el año 1531. El propósito de su aparición no es cosa del pasado, sino que cada año el recuerdo nos lleva al
compromiso de hacer algo importante en el Reino de Dios. ¿Qué estamos haciendo personalmente, en familia y en comunidad para que
esto suceda? Recordemos que ella era tan humana como nosotros. La Virgen María también luchó en la vida tal como nosotros lo hacemos
ahora, con la única excepción que ella estuvo limpia de pecado, escogida por Dios para ser su morada y discípula amada por Dios. Imitemos
pues a María en este Adviento y pidámosle que nos ayude a entender nuestro papel en la Iglesia. Imitémosla también a recibir a Jesús;

“En la Eucaristía Cristo está con nosotros en su propia sustancia. Cuando Él les dijo a los apóstoles que se iría al cielo. Cristo
les dijo: “Estén tranquilos que yo estaré con ustedes todos los
días, aun hasta el final del mundo”. Esta promesa les dio tranquilidad a los Apóstoles ya que El estará siempre presente con
la presencia de su cuerpo pero en diferente sustancia.
