 EFC Preaching October 25, 2015 God Making His Appeal This morning we are concluding a short series as Len and Beth prepare to go to the USA for a year, and as I prepare to step into the role of lead pastor here during his absence. We’ve been taking time to look at four areas of our lives in Christ in which I would encourage each of us to grow in this coming year. We have talked about drawing near to the Lord in worship, serving one another as the body of Christ, and living in community. This morning we conclude talking about how we are living on a mission with Christ. You and I are on a God­glorifying, world­impacting, eternity­changing, life­giving mission with Jesus in a world lost in darkness, enslaved to sin, and dead to God. Living this mission with Christ is the focus of our time together this morning. Today’s message is an urgent call to each of us to live out this mission boldly for the glory of God and the salvation of lost people. Pray I have here in my hand a collection of tracts. Little booklets that you can give to people, which tell them about Jesus Christ, and how we can be saved by Him. Now, the tracts I have here are in many languages –more than 25. Hindi. Japanese. Tagalog. Swedish. Farsi. Russian. Urdu. Afrikaans. And others. Let me tell you the story about how I got them, because it made me think of us here at EFC. This summer my family and I spent time visiting in the USA. One of the people we got to visit was my uncle Phil. Uncle Phil told me about his efforts to tell people about Jesus. For years and years my uncle and my grandfather, while he was alive, would go regularly to New York City, to a busy street corner, and tell people about Jesus. In fact, Sara and I even accidentally bumped into them in the middle of the city once as they faithfully told others about Jesus. So many people from all over the world pass by that corner that they brought tracts in different languages to give out. As you can imagine, people from the all over the world were often surprised to find literature in their language, and it opened the door for to share with them the good news of Jesus. He is now almost 70, and my uncle continues to go out with his tracts and tell others about the love of God in Jesus Christ, though now he does it closer to his home. As Uncle Phil gave me a sample of his tracts, I thought of EFC. People from all over the world – with different languages and traditions ­ come together to worship God in the name of Jesus Christ. And then we go out each week to different parts of the world – to Quito, and other parts of Ecuador, and countries all over. In the almost three years I’ve been here I’ve known people who have gone to Italy, Australia, New Zealand, the USA, Germany, Spain, to Banos, Atacames, Guayaquil, and other places. En verdad, EFC es una comunidad culturally diverse community. As I think about my uncle’s faithful ministry to reach the world for Christ, I think about our same calling as a church. My uncle is an ambassador for Jesus. You and I are also ambassadors for Jesus. If you have been born again ­ made new by faith in Jesus ­ you are an His ambassador. It is not possible to be a follower of Jesus and not be His ambassador. It is an essential part of being a Christ­ian. So this morning, we will focus on what it means to be an ambassador for Christ, and what the foundation for this ministry is. We need to feel the weight and privilege of the mission that God has entrusted to us. Our hearts must be moved with urgency and the right motivations as we live out our ambassadorship. And we desperately need to know the power which is at work in and through us. The world is the mission field. And we are Christ’s ambassadors, living out God’s ministry of reconciliation in it. We are going to fix our attention on just one verse this morning, but I am going to read some of the context to help us get a picture for what we’re focusing on. Please open your Bibles to 2 Corinthians 5:17, and we’ll read through 6:2. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain.” That is the context. Specifically, we will focus on verse 20: “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” We are ambassadors for Christ – God is making His appeal through us. Do you hear what Paul is saying here? If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, you are His ambassador. Are you a good ambassador? Do you know what your mission is? What is the message that you share? Are you motivated by the right things, and are you driven with appropriate urgency? Where does your power come from, and what gives you the right to serve as an ambassador for the God of the universe? These are the sorts of questions we want to consider this morning. For God has entrusted to us the most important message and ministry that humanity has ever known. We cannot sit idly by. We are ambassadors for Jesus Christ. To understand that call that God has placed on our lives, we are going to spend a few minutes considering life as an ambassador for Jesus. First, we need to understand what an ambassador is. An ambassador is a person who has been commissioned to go and represent a government or person in word and action on a special assignment. El embajador de Ecuador en los Estados Unidos, has been sent to the USA by the Ecuadorian government to represent the interests of Ecuador to the US government. In Ancient Rome, ambassador would represent the will and desires and interests of either the Roman emperor or the Roman senate in different places, and to different peoples. While the emperor or senate weren’t physically present, they commissioned their ambassadors to speak their message and represented their authority and will. When Paul says that we are ambassadors for Christ, this is what he’s talking about. Jesus is not here physically, so He has commissioned His followers to speak for Him, and to represent His desires and authority in this world in his physical absence. You and I are Jesus’ representatives, commissioned by Him, to carry out His mission and speak His message in this world. As we return to our verse, and the surrounding passage, we learn a lot about what this really means, and what this should look like in our lives. First, I want to consider with you the foundation of our ambassadorship. How is it that you and I can represent Christ in this world? To become an ambassador of a country is a difficult thing to do. You have to have the right personality, do well in your studies, speak another language well, make the right personal connections, and prove yourself in how you serve within your government before you can be considered to be an ambassador. In other words, you have to work hard to earn the position. But this is not the case with Christ’s ambassadors. The foundation of our ambassadorship is not one of good works, but of grace. We are not ambassadors because we deserve it – we are ambassadors because of God’s work on our behalf. Starting in verse 18 we read, “All this is ​

was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake ​

we might become the righteousness of God.” Surrounding Paul’s statement that we are Christ’s ambassadors, he points us to why we are able to be ambassadors at all, and it is all God’s grace, from start to finish. It is “through Christ” and “in Christ” that God reconciled us and commissioned us. God, in Jesus, exchanged our sin for His righteousness. And that is the foundation for our ambassadorship. Not that we are capable in and of ourselves. Not that we have earned a position on Jesus’ staff by our good works. Not that we have impressed God by our efforts. It is God’s grace, poured out for sinners who have turned to Jesus in faith for forgiveness and new life. In Jesus, God both saves us (He reconciles us to Himself) and commissions us (we are made ambassadors for Christ). Es un privilegio importante So when you hear Paul say that you are an ambassador for Jesus, I want the grace behind that statement to really sink in. It is a significant privilege to be an ambassador for Christ, for it flows out of the saving work which Jesus accomplished for us on the cross. “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world… and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ – by grace you have been saved…” (selections from Ephesians 2:1­5) Jesus’ ambassadors are sinners saved by God’s grace. And really, who better to proclaim Jesus’ message of salvation, than we who have experienced the grace of God in our own lives? You have been reconciled to God; what a privilege to minister reconciliation to others. We are ambassadors for Christ, and the foundation for our ambassadorship is the grace of God in Jesus Christ. But what mission has Jesus given us, His ambassadors? In our mission we are both messengers and representatives. As messengers we have been entrusted by God with “the message of reconciliation.” This is the message that God has done all that is necessary to remove the obstacles that stood in the way of a restored relationship with Him. Even though we were the ones who had sinned against God, He is the One who took the steps necessary to restore us to Himself. There is no sin too great that the blood of Jesus cannot cover in the lives of those who trust in Him. In Christ God has removed every obstacle; Jesus finished the work. If you want to be right with God, all it takes is to confess your sin, and in repentance and faith turn to Jesus as Lord and Savior – and you will be saved. You will be restored in your relationship with God by His grace. That is the message we proclaim. In Jesus Christ there is forgiveness for sins. In Jesus Christ there is new life with God. In Jesus Christ there is hope and grace and mercy. And it is all free to everyone who receives this gift by faith. You are Christ’s ambassadors, and the gospel is the message you share. Do you hear the tone in this message? Paul says God is making His “appeal” through us. The gospel is a tender call from the heart of God: that lost sinners would come home. That word for “appeal” can be translated “urge, request, implore or entreat.” God wants people to be reconciled to Himself through Jesus! He strongly desires to save. God, in His great love has removed every obstacle which stood in the way of our relationship with Him, and He says, “Come. Please come. I love you. Won’t you come home to me?” This is God’s call. And if love is the tone of God’s message, it must be our tone as we deliver it. There is no room for condemning attitudes and self­righteous judgment as we share with them the message of salvation in Jesus Christ. But we need to be careful here. The ambassador’s message is the message of the one who sends him; it is not his own, and ser un embajador de Cristo, ya que fluye fuera de la obra de salvación que Jesús llevó a cabo para nosotros en la cruz. Estás embajadores de Cristo, y el evangelio es el mensaje que usted comparte. ¿Oyes el tono en este mensaje? Pablo dice que Dios está haciendo su "petición" a través de nosotros. El evangelio es una llamada cariñosa desde el corazón de Dios: que los pecadores perdidos vendrían a casa. No matter how loving God is ­ and He is more loving than we can imagine ­ there is only one way of salvation. I point this out because the message of salvation in Christ alone, by faith alone, is not popular. It is not popular to say that someone is a sinner. Or that Jesus is the absolute only way to be right with God. Or that we cannot add any of our own good works to what God has done for us. But it is the message we must proclaim, for it is God’s message that we carry, and it is our only hope of being right with God. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes…” (Romans 1:16a) The gospel is THE power of God for salvation. We are not at liberty as Jesus’ ambassadors to change His message. We proclaim Christ Jesus, and Him crucified. As ambassadors for Jesus we lovingly proclaim the gospel message. We are messengers for Jesus. But we are also representatives. As I think about what it means to be an ambassador, I think about the reality that ambassadors represent their nation or their king not only in their words, but also in their lives. Let me give you an example of this. A few weeks ago, my family and I were driving when I saw a car with diplomatic license plates, which is not too uncommon. Automatically I assume that this car is being driven by someone who is not from Ecuador, but is here representing their country. What caught my attention is the way the people in the car were behaving. One of the men was standing up in the car with half his body outside the sunroof, waving his arms around. If I remember correctly, he was dancing to the music that was loudly playing. As you can imagine, his actions have just left me with an impression of whatever nation they represent. The same is true of us as ambassadors for Christ. Our actions reveal to other people something about the One we represent – Jesus Christ. As I think about the reality that our lives impact the way we represent Jesus as His ambassadors, I find this really touches everything. Are you a teacher? Your attitudes and actions toward your students, your coworkers, and your employer are a reflection of Jesus. You are Christ’s ambassador. Are you a business man or woman? The way you treat your employees and customers, the way you honor the tax laws, the way you advertise your products are all reflections of Jesus. You are Christ’s ambassador. Are you a student? When you choose to not cheat – or to cheat, the way you study hard – or don’t study hard, the way you gossip – or don’t gossip, the way you respect your teachers, are all reflections of Jesus. You are Christ’s ambassador. Are you a parent? The way you treat your children – whether with patience or impatience, gentleness or harshness, honesty or dishonesty – is a reflection of Jesus. This hit me recently. God convicted me that I wasn’t being as patient or gentle with my kids as He would have me be. As I thought about it, I realized that my actions and attitudes are going to either help them know and love Jesus, or they are going to hinder them from knowing or loving Jesus. esto porque el mensaje de la salvación en Cristo, por la fe solamente, no es popular. No es popular decir que alguien es un pecador. O que Jesús es la única manera absoluta de estar bien con Dios. O que no podemos añadir cualquiera de nuestras buenas obras a lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros. Pero es el mensaje que debemos proclamar, porque es el mensaje de Dios el que llevaremos, y es nuestra única esperanza de estar bien con Dios. "Porque no me avergüenzo del evangelio, porque es poder de Dios para salvación a todo aquel que cree..." (Romanos 1: 16a) El evangelio es poder de Dios para salvación. No estamos en libertad como embajadores de Jesús para cambiar su mensaje. Proclamamos Jesucristo, ya éste crucificado. Como embajadores de Jesús, amorosamente proclamamos el mensaje del evangelio. Somos mensajeros de Jesús. Pero también somos representantes. Cuando pienso en lo que significa ser un embajador, pienso en la realidad de que los embajadores representan a su nación o su rey no sólo en sus palabras, sino también en sus vidas. Déjeme darle un ejemplo de esto. Hace unas semanas, mi familia y yo estuvimos en manejando cuando vi un auto con matrículas diplomáticas, que no es muy común ver. Automáticamente Asumo que este coche está siendo conducido por alguien que no es de Ecuador, pero está aquí en representación de su país. Lo que me llamó la atención es la forma en que las personas en el coche se comportaban. Uno de los hombres estaba de pie en el coche con la mitad de su cuerpo fuera del techo solar, agitando los brazos. Si no recuerdo mal, él estaba bailando con la música que estaba tocando en voz alta. Como se puede imaginar, sus acciones me dejaron una impresión que cualquier nación pude dar. Lo mismo puede decirse de nosotros como embajadores de Cristo. Nuestras acciones revelan a otras personas a quien representamos ­ Jesucristo. Al pensar en la realidad de que nuestras vidas afectan la forma en que representamos a Jesús como sus embajadores, encuentro que esto se relaciona con todo. ¿Eres profesor? Tus actitudes y acciones hacia sus alumnos, sus compañeros de trabajo, y su empleador son un reflejo de Jesús. Usted es embajador de Cristo. ¿Es usted un hombre de negocios o una mujer? La forma en que trata a sus empleados y clientes, la forma de honrar a las leyes fiscales, la manera de anunciar sus productos son todos reflejos de Jesús. Wherever we find ourselves in life, we represent Jesus Christ – and our actions and attitudes tell others about Him, and will either help or hinder our ability to speak Christ’s message. We are on a mission as both messengers and representatives of Jesus Christ. And there is an urgency to our mission. At the beginning of the chapter we are in, Paul talks for 10 verses about the reality of eternity. The weight of eternity brings an urgency to our mission. Paul felt that urgency, and we should too. His message to the Corinthians is this: “We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” The word translated “implore” can also be translated “beg.” It is a strong word which carries with it a sense of urgency! When you think of a true beggar on the street, there is an urgency to them – they must have food, or they will die! And Paul – in the light of coming eternity – feels an even greater urgency. It’s as if he is saying, “Please, I beg you, be reconciled to God! He’s already made the way in Jesus Christ. He wants to save you. Your eternal future is in the balance! Don’t make lie of this! Don’t wait until it’s too late.” Because someday it will indeed be too late. This is what Paul says in 6:1­2: “Working together with him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For he says, ‘In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” No one is promised tomorrow. But we do have today. There is an urgency to our mission as we represent Christ to people whose eternal destiny is not yet heaven. But I wonder if we really believe that. I wonder if we really understand the weight of eternity. It’s so easy to talk about eternity and the urgency to our message – but do we really act like our mission is urgent and eternity is long? Take a look at your life – do you take opportunities to tell others about Jesus? Do you make choices that will purposefully open up spiritual conversations? Do you pray – I mean really pray – for God’s saving work in unsaved family members? Do you prioritize how you handle your money to be able to support missions work around the world? If you find, as you take a look at your life, that there isn’t much of a sense of urgency to this mission Jesus has given you, I want to suggest something. I want you to spend some time thinking about death. Not to be all morbid, but to really help give some perspective. I’m taking this idea from Psalm 90, where the main point is that we would count our days, in order to make our days count. When we realize that life on this earth is short at most, it helps us think about what things are important, and what things are a waste. Standing outside of the funeral home right down there on Avenida America can really help us feel the reality that the most important thing in our lives – and the lives of those around us – is that we would be reconciled to God. There is an urgency to our mission, and it must move us to action, for we are Christ’s ambassadors. mejorar nuestra capacidad en hablar el mensaje de Cristo. Cuando usted piensa en un verdadero mendigo en la calle, hay una urgencia para ellos ­ que deben tener los alimentos, o van a morir! Y Pablo ­ a la luz de la eternidad ­ siente una mayor urgencia. Es como si él está diciendo: "Por favor, te lo ruego, reconcíliate con Dios! Él ya ha hecho el camino en Jesucristo. Él quiere salvarte. Tu futuro eterno está en juego! No haga una mentira de esto! No espere hasta que sea demasiado tarde. "Porque algún día será de hecho demasiado tarde. Esto es lo que Pablo dice en 6: 1­2: "Trabajando juntos con él, entonces, hacemos un llamamiento a no recibir la gracia de Dios en vano. '. En un tiempo favorable te escuché, y en el día de salvación te he ayudado' Porque él dice: He aquí, ahora es el momento favorable; he aquí ahora el día de salvación. "Nadie tiene el mañana asegurado Pero el día de hoy sí . Hay una urgencia en nuestra misión como representantes de Cristo para personas cuyo destino final no está asegurado todavía. Pero me pregunto si realmente creemos eso. Me pregunto si realmente entendemos el peso de la eternidad. Es muy fácil hablar de la eternidad y la urgencia de nuestro mensaje ­ pero ¿realmente actuamos como si nuestra misión fuera urgente y consideramos a la eternidad como eterna? Sin querer ser atrevido, sino para ayudar realmente dar un poco de perspectiva. Estoy tomando esta idea del Salmo 90, donde el punto principal es contar nuestros días, con el fin de traigamos sabiduría. Cuando nos damos cuenta de que la vida en esta tierra es corta, como máximo, nos ayuda a pensar acerca de lo que las cosas son importantes, y las cosas que son un desperdicio. Afuera de la funeraria ahí abajo en la Avenida América realmente puede ayudarnos a sentir la realidad de que lo más importante en nuestras vidas ­ y las vidas que nos rodean ­ es que íbamos a ser reconciliados con Dios. Hay una urgencia de nuestra misión, y nos debe mover a la acción, ya que somos embajadores de Cristo. Al mirar hacia atrás en lo que hemos aprendido acerca de ser embajadores de Cristo hoy, sé que puede resultar abrumador. As we look back at what we’ve learned about being Christ’s ambassadors today, I know that it can feel overwhelming. I have felt that myself. When we start to seriously understand the reality that we have been commissioned as messengers and representatives of Jesus in a world that is hostile to Him, fear can begin to cloud our vision. When we start to understand the urgency of the mission we are on, we can start to feel overwhelmed at the staggering reality that eternity lies in the outcome of this mission. And that sense of fear and of being overwhelmed can lead us to make excuses, or to try and avoid our responsibilities, or to not take God seriously. But we need not let fear or a sense of being overwhelmed control us. Because it is God who is ultimately the power in our mission. This is obvious through the passage, as God is consistently the one taking the initiative and the one doing the work of reconciling. It was God who sent Jesus and accomplished the work. And it is God who is at work through us as we live as His ambassadors. “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us​
.” God is the One who is making His appeal through us! We don’t need to be afraid! We are not alone in this mission! And its ultimate success lies in God’s hands, not ours. The power to change a life is God’s power, not ours. The power to save from sin is God’s power, not ours. God is making His appeal through you, for you are Christ’s ambassador. As I draw this message to a close, it is obvious that there is a call here to action. We are Christ’s ambassadors, commissioned and empowered by Him to carry out His mission in this world in word and deed. Wherever God takes you in this life, may the Holy Spirit make you an effective messenger and representative of Jesus in a world that so desperately needs to be reconciled to God. May you live with purpose and with urgency, boldly fulfilling the ministry that God has given you, as He makes His appeal through you. He sentido que yo. Cuando empezamos a entender en serio la realidad que se nos ha encomendado como mensajeros y representantes de Jesús en un mundo que es hostil a Él, el miedo puede comenzar a nublar nuestra visión. Cuando empezamos a entender la urgencia de la misión estamos, podemos empezar a sentirnos abrumados por la realidad asombrosa de la eternidad como resultado de esta misión. Y esa sensación de miedo y de agobio nos puede llevar a poner excusas, o evitar nuestras responsabilidades, o no tomar a Dios en serio. Pero no tenemos que dejar que el miedo o una sensación de agobio nos controlen. Debido a que es Dios quien es en última instancia el poder en nuestra misión. Esto es obvio a través del paso, como Dios es siempre el que toma la iniciativa y el que hace el trabajo de reconciliación. Fue Dios quien envió a Jesús y realizó la obra. Y es Dios quien está obrando a través de nosotros mientras vivimos como sus embajadores. "Por lo tanto, somos embajadores en nombre de Cristo, como si Dios exhortara por medio de nosotros." Dios es el que está haciendo Su petición a través de nosotros! No necesitamos tener miedo! No estamos solos en esta misión! Y su éxito final está en manos de Dios, no la nuestra. El poder de cambiar una vida es el poder de Dios, no la nuestra. El poder para salvarnos del pecado es el poder de Dios, no la nuestra. Dios está haciendo Su petición a través de ti, porque tú eres el embajador de Cristo. Mientras termino este mensaje, es obvio que hay un llamado para la acción. Somos embajadores de Cristo, encargados y capacitados por Él para llevar a cabo su misión en este mundo, en palabra y obra. Dondequiera que Dios te lleva en esta vida, que el Espíritu Santo te haga un mensajero y representante de Jesús eficaz en un mundo que necesita desesperadamente ser reconciliados con Dios. Que vivas con propósito y con urgencia, cumpliendo con valentía el ministerio que Dios te ha dado, mientras él hace su petición a través de ti.
