Always read the owners manuals of both your vehicle and car seat thoroughly. 9. According to Utah law, kids must be in a car seat or booster seat until age 8. But remember, proper seatbelt fit is the most important factor. All car seats on the market have passed government safety standards. The best car seat is the one that best fits your child, your vehicle and the one that you will use correctly every time. Never add separate products to a seat unless tested and approved by the seat manufacturer. Kids under 12 should always ride in the back seat where they are better protected. 10. 11. Keep your baby rear-facing as long as possible to better protect the neck and spine. Never turn a child forward-facing before age 1 and 20 pounds. Make sure the car seat fits snugly in your vehicle. The car seat should not move more than one inch from side to side or forward. Make sure your vehicle seatbelts are locked properly. Pull the seat belt all the way out before feeding the excess webbing back in. This will allow it to be in a locked mode. Check the level indicator to maintain the correct recline angle for your rear-facing infant. (Between 30°- 45,° but refer to your manual). 12. 13. Make sure that the harness fits snugly and correctly on your child. A snug strap should not allow any slack. You should not be able to pinch excess webbing at the shoulder once the harness is buckled. For rear-facing children the harness should be fed through slots at or below the shoulders. For forward-facing children the harness should be fed through slots at or above the shoulders. Place the retainer clip (the clasp that holds the shoulder straps together) over your child’s chest at armpit level. Children wearing seat belts must use both a lap and shoulder belt. The lap belt should rest on the hips, not the stomach and the shoulder belt should rest on the shoulder, not the neck. The seat belt should never be placed under the arm or behind the child. Know the history of your car seat. Do not use car seats that have been recalled, are older than 6 years old, have been involved in a crash, show any form of cracks or damage, or have missing labels, model number, manufacturing date, instructions or parts.
