September 18, 2016 The 25th Sunday In Ordinary Time Welcome to St. Joseph Church, 7240 W. 57th St., Summit, Illinois 60501-1324 The dishonest steward is guilty of having no justice, and, therefore, does not have judicial approval from God the judge. Fr. Bob’s Briefs In the Gospel this Sunday, we hear Jesus tell us a very strange parable, the Parable of the Dishonest Steward. In this parable, from Luke 16:1-13, Jesus tells us a story of a steward who cheats his master. At the end of the parable, it seems as if the Lord is praising the man for his bad actions. “And the master commended that dishonest steward.” How can the Lord praise the steward for cheating? The Lord Jesus does not praise the steward for his cheating and dishonesty. The master in the parable praises the steward for his dishonest behavior, but the Lord Jesus does not. When we read the Gospel of Luke, we hear Jesus describe the steward as dishonest. In the original Greek language, St. Luke the Evangelist uses the word adikos. The word adikos is a combination of two root parts. The “a” means “no” in Greek, and when it precedes a word in the beginning, as a prefix, it makes the word into a negative. The word dike means “justice.” Thus, the word adikos can be translated as “no justice.” As an adjective, adikos means “unjust or unrighteous.” So, the steward in the parable has no justice. What does this mean? Let us delve further with the Greek word dikos. Dikos comes from the Greek word dike that means judicial verdict. This judicial verdict is a judgment (just finding) that regards someone as guilty or innocent. Thus, in Greek, the word dike meant “right or judicial approval.” The steward in today’s Gospel is not really being commended by Jesus for being dishonest. Rather, Jesus is making a verdict of judgment on this man’s character and behavior. This steward cheated his master. He lied and stole. Jesus is making a just finding based on the evidence of his actions and declaring that this man is not right in acting this way. The dishonest steward is guilty of having no justice, and, therefore, does not have judicial approval from God the judge. Writing on the Parable of the Unjust Steward, the Patristic Father Origen teaches, “it is said also in Genesis that the serpent was the wisest animal, wherein he makes wisdom not a virtue, but evil-minded cunning. And it is in this same sense that the steward that had done wisely, that is, cunningly and evilly.” We are very skilled in bad habits and vices, but we don’t tend to practice (or want to practice) good habits and virtues in life. Using an opposite example to prove His point, Jesus teaches us in this parable that just as we have disposition and energy to perform bad works and vices, so too, we should have just as much and the same disposition and energy to prompt us to do good works of love and grace. In the painting, we see the dishonest steward telling his debtor to change the amount that is owed to the master in the promissory note, book. Slightly above the debtor’s shoulder, in the upper left side of the painting, we see a small green parrot sitting on a perch, looking down at the two people. Many times, this painting is shown with the parrot cut out of the picture, with only a close up on the two people at the counting table. Why did the artist place this parrot in the scene? The parrot serves as an important symbol and tool of teaching. First, parrots are social birds; they like in large groups. Second, parrots can learn to speak, imitate human words and phrases. Thus, the parrot in this painting is a symbol used by the artist to teach us an important lesson in life that stems from the teaching of Jesus in this week’s Gospel. If we associate with bad people, make friends with people of vice, then we will learn and imitate that same vice and bad behavior in our own lives. Jesus wants us to make friends with and imitate the children of the light, not darkness. Next weekend, we will have mission speakers speak at the masses for the annual Mission Appeal. This year, the Archdiocese has assigned to our parish the Roman Catholic Prelature of Sicuani, in the province of Cusco, Peru. As I was reading on the background of this Prelature, I was reminded that the former auxiliary bishop of Chicago, Bishop Nevin Hayes, O. Carm., was bishop there in Peru from 1959-1970, before coming back home to Chicago. Please pray for peace in the world. May our Blessed Mother Mary, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus! Poprzez tę przypowieść Jezus uczy nas, iż podobnie jak mamy predyspozycje i energię, aby czynić zło, z taką samą energią i zaangażowaniem powinniśmy czynić dobro. Karmelita, o. Nevin Heyes, w latach 1959-1970, pełnił posługę kapłańską właśnie w Sicuani w Peru. Módlmy się o pokój na świecie. Święta Maryjo Rozwiązująca Węzły, miej nas zawsze w Swej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi! GIVE HIM ETERNAL REST ROBERT CONRADI Eternal rest, grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful through the mercy of God rest in peace! St. Joseph School: A Community of Faith, Knowledge and Service. 708-458-2927 This Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. Mass we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. This is the Sunday we recognize all of our catechists who work with the children in our school and Religious Education programs. Please pray for them that they may impart our faith to our children and that our children are receptive to their message. This Sunday we begin our Family Mass. The St. Joseph Choristers begin this week, joined by our seventh graders. Our classes will continue to read at Mass on the second Sunday of each month. Our choristers will normally sing at the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Each Wednesday, our school attends the 8:30 a.m. Mass as a whole. If you are free, I would invite you to attend Mass with us. Our entrance hymn this week was All Are Welcome. Led by our fifth graders, our children sang beautifully filling the Church with their young voices. The chorus of the song is – All Are Welcome In This Place. Reflecting on the hymn I thought about how well the message pertains to St. Joseph School. St. Joseph is a family and we as a faculty, staff, and school community welcome everyone. A new addition to our school is the Water Station, put in to replace one of the drinking fountains. The Water Station includes a place to fill water bottles. We wish to thank Mr. Yanez, Mr. Perez and Diego Yanez for giving up part of their Sunday to install the station, and the St. Joseph Parent Club for making the purchase for our school. It is working very well. So far we have saved 380 plastic bottles from the environment. Finally, as mentioned last week we continue to accept enrollment for the 2016 – 2017 school year. Remember, tuition assistance is available through our Pastor’s Scholarship and Caritas Program. There is still some $15,000.00 available to us from Caritas Scholarship Fund. If interested please contact the school office. Thank you for your continued support. Have a great week. God Bless.
