“Worldwide Rolling Stock Manufacturers” analyses and explains the market along the revenues
with new rolling stock. Previously to the publication of this study, SCI Verkehr surveyed the 50
largest manufacturers of rolling stock.
In terms of sites, the production facilities of traditional rolling stock production are taken into
consideration first of all. Sites at which the maintenance and/or refurbishment of the vehicles
are performed are not taken into consideration. A site is defined as a geographical place or
location where a company or an operating facility of a company is located. For smaller
companies, the site is also generally the company headquarters.
Within the scope of this study, SCI Verkehr is mainly focusing on the top of the value creation
chain. Manufacturers of subsystems, components and assemblies are not considered.
All input data used for these assessments has been summarized in corporate fact sheets; they
have been sent to the respective market players for discussion and revaluation and can be
found in the study’s and easily used for further detailed analysis.

Overview

The top 10 of the largest manufacturers saw several new and re-entries in 2012. Stadler,
previously unlisted, jumped to the 6th place with exceptionally strong sales in that year. Shaking
of the aftermath of the past economic crisis, freight wagon demand was very high in 2012. This
way, Uralvagonzavod and Trinity Industries as the largest freight wagon manufacturing
specialists, entered the ranking on the last two places. On the other hand, CAF, Hyundai
Rotem and Kawasaki slipped out of the top ten. However, these three companies still had
strong fiscal years 2012, but they could not keep up with the growth of Stadler, Trinity
Industries or Uralvagonzavod.

Uralvagonzavod (CIS) and Trinity Industries (North America) are the worldwide leaders in
freight wagon manufacturing. Both companies are specialised in the freight wagon segment
and manufacture in and for their home regions. Uralvagonzavod has a net profit margin of 10%,
stressing the point that specialised manufacturers with large-scale sites have the highest
margins. Uralvagonzavod currently manufactures its freight wagons at only one plant in Russia;
Trinity’s manufacturing operations are spread over seven sites in the USA and Mexico.

Development of Companies and Site Strategies

The low average margins of globally active companies indicate the generally high degree of
competition. Alstom, Bombardier and Siemens are generalists that are subjected to worldwide
competition. Their combined EBIT margin is between 3% and 7% and constantly declining.
However, there are a number of factors that positively influence the profit margins for certain
manufacturers:
High degree of specialisation. GE is a specialised manufacturer of diesel locomotives
and has an exceptionally high EBIT margin of almost 20%. Specialised freight wagon
manufacturers such as Trinity Industries and Uralvagonzavod also report high profit
margins. Generally, the segments of locomotives and freight wagons are more profitable
than the passenger vehicle segment because passenger vehicles have the smallest degree
of standardisation, with often very particular demands from the customers.

Around 180 companies manufacture rolling stock at approximately 330 sites worldwide.
Numerous large manufacturers are integrated rail technology groups with services,
infrastructure and systems technology competence.

Australia/Pacific
– In Australia, UGL and Downer Rail manufacture locomotives and passenger vehicles, with Downer ending
locomotive manufacturing once current manufacturing contracts are fulfilled. Bradken manufactures freight
wagons.
– Around five manufacturers are currently headquartered in the Australia/Pacific region, three of which are
among 50 most important manufacturers worldwide.
– The local manufacturers operate around 10 sites, including one plant from Bradken in China. However, this
plant also only serves the Australian market.
– The regional manufacturers will not expand in the medium term. Avteq and Hillside Engineering have ceased
operations, while Downer Rail has announced its retreat from locomotive production.
– Bombardier operates its own site in Australia.
– Extra-regional manufacturers will not open plants in the Australia/Pacific region as there is the possibility to
export, and there are already existing cooperation agreements with local manufacturers.

Worldwide manufacturers of locomotives
Worldwide, there are more than 60 manufacturers of locomotives. The manufacturing
landscape is very diverse: half of all manufacturers offer electric and diesel locomotives. There
are many specialised diesel locomotive manufacturers, but only a few specialised electric
locomotive manufacturers. Generally, the market for diesel locomotives is a worldwide market
and the market for electric locomotives is mainly limited to the Eurasian double continent. The

Compared with the diesel locomotives’ market, the market for electric locomotives is more
concentrated, both because the electrical competence is more difficult for manufacturers to
acquire and because the customers are mainly situated on the Eurasian double continent.
Chinese manufacturers alone delivered more than 50% of all electric locomotives. Asia and the
CIS combined constitute more than 75% of electric locomotive demand and supply. Alstom,
Bombardier and Siemens divide almost the whole rest of the worldwide market – mostly
Europe – among themselves.

Maximum long-term capacities, as defined through plant and machinery, are usually higher
than short-term capacities, which are more flexible through the employment of temporary
workforces. Also, capacities can be and are additionally utilised for the refurbishment and
redesign of passenger vehicles. In mixed-use facilities, capacity can to a certain degree be
shifted between different vehicle segments. For this reasons, the utilisation rates are not only
determined by the design capacity and the current vehicle output.

Wabtec Corporation (Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corporation) is an American
company which was founded in November 1999 from the merger of Westinghouse Air
Brake Company and MotivePower Industries. The company’s headquarters is in
Wilmerding (Pennsylvania). Around 9 200 employees are working in more than 40
subsidiaries worldwide.
The company’s performance in 2012 was already very strong and 2013 was again a
record year, with revenue growth of 7%. Wabtec had sales of EUR 1.9 billion in 2013 and
income from operations of EUR 317 million or 17% of sales. Income rose by 11.5%.
Wabtec’s main business focus is on rail vehicle components, but it also covers all fields in
the diesel locomotive segment including maintenance, refurbishment/modernisation and
new vehicles. Wabtec’s products cover all performance ranges up to 3 000kW. Wabtec
manufactures locomotives for commuter and long-distance passenger transport and for
freight transport (mainly for shunting operation).
On 2nd October 2012, Wabtec announced the EUR 37 million (USD 48 million) acquisition
of diesel engine and industrial locomotive supplier LH Group. Based at Barton under
Needwood in Staffordshire (UK), LH has around 350 employees and annual sales of EUR
55 million (USD 65 million). The LH Group companies became part of Wabtec Rail Group,
together with Wabtec Rail Ltd, Wabtec Rail Scotland and Brush Traction.
In 2007, Hunslet, part of the LH group, began developing a new family of locomotives
ranging from shunters to vehicles weighing up to 100 tons. The first locomotive of the
new class, the DH60C, a three-axle C diesel hydraulic shunting locomotive was unveiled
in July 2010, but has not yet received any orders.
Wabtec Corporation has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Fandstan Electric Group
Ltd, a rail and industrial equipment manufacturer, for a cash value of about EUR 158
million (USD 215 million). Based in London, England, Fandstan Electric has annual sales
of around EUR 173 million (USD 235 million). Fandstan Electric designs, manufactures
and installs electrical current and data collection products for a variety of markets,
including rail and tram transport, industrial and energy. Wabtec expects the transaction to
be completed in the first quarter of 2014.

Wabtec is specialised in the design, manufacture
and remanufacture of diesel-electric locomotives.
Wabtec is not actively pursuing expansion of its
product portfolio, but could potentially grow into
new segments through future acquisitions.
Wabtec is foremost a manufacturer of
components. As such, most value for the
MotivePower locomotives is added in-house.
Wabtec’s components portfolio includes wheelsets
and bogies, brake and damping equipment, HVAC
and door systems.
Wabtec is growing through the acquisition of
small, specialised companies, such as Hunslet.
Facilities and co-operations
Wabtec’s main facility for new vehicles is located in Boise (Idaho, US). Hunslet’s facilities
are situated near Leeds (UK). A plant for manufacturing trucks and engines is attached
the main facility in Boise.
Wabtec Rail has five subsidiaries that offer aftersales services, four of which are located in
the US. With Wabtec Rail Limited in Manchester (UK), the company has a site in Europe
for all areas of aftersales services.

Wabtec mainly supplies locomotives for
passenger rail transport in North America,
but also in Australia.
The newest product is the MP21B, which is a
low emission diesel-electric multi-engine
switcher locomotive, and fulfils TIER3
emission standards. The MPXpress
locomotives are diesel-electric locomotives for
commuter transport. They were designed with
regard to safety aspects and have power of
up to 3 000kW. The maximum speed is
around 170km/h.

 Wabtec’s MotivePower subsidiary signed a

of grain in Australia in 2011. The
locomotives were delivered between 2012
and 2013.
 Metrolinx (Canada) has signed a USD 63
million contract for MotivePower to supply
10 diesel-electric locomotives for use on
commuter services from 2016; the new
locomotives will fulfil Tier 4 emissions
standards.
