On Wednesday February 16th, an Ariane 5 put in orbit the second ESA’s Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), named after Johannes Kepler. The ATV-2 will take eight days to get close and fully automatically docked to Space magazine for professional and companies of the space sector the International Space Station (ISS). The docking maneuver is especially critical when dealing with two heavy aircrafts, 375 tons of the station and 20 tons of the ATV, traveling at a speed of 28,000 kilometers per hour. The ATV spacecraft carries more than 5,000 kg of fuel, 100 kg of oxygen and about 1,500 kg of solid material, such as scientific instrumentation and elements for the crew’s basic necessities. In addition to its logistics function, the ATV spacecraft will use most of the fuel transported to propel the Station and raise its orbit, in order to counteract the gradual effect of gravity and friction experimented when orbiting between 300 and 400 km height. If necessary, the ATV would also propel the Station to perform any maneuver to avoid space debris. The ATV will remain docked to the station for at least three and a half months. As it is a pressurized vehicle, the astronauts will use it as another work module of the station during that time. At the end of the mission, it will be filled with waste material and debris to be burned along with the vehicle itself, in a controlled destructive reentry maneuver due to friction with the atmosphere. The launch of the ATV-2 is the launch number 200 for Arianespace, as well as the heaviest burden carried to the space by Europe to date. Nearly all the Spanish space industry has participated in this mission, both in the ATV and the Ariane 5 launcher. On July 29th 2009, Deimos successfully launched its Earth observation satellite, named Deimos-1. The satellite, which is registered within the Spanish Space Objects Registry, began its starting up stage immediately the same night by sending the first operational software modules. Deimos system is aimed towards obtaining optical and infrared data from the Earth´s surface, and more specifically, towards obtaining coverage from large areas as frequently as possible. The system spatial resolution is designed to offer regular services for agriculture and environment sectors, for which a 20 mt. resolution optic has been chosen. The bands are the same as those that are most frequently used for these services, the well-known Landsat 2, 3 and 4. The quality of the obtained images has been very high from the first moment, and it exceeds that of previous DMC satellites. It even exceeds the quality of the 20 mt. sensors that the SPOT series has in almost all of its measurements. In the six months that it has been operating, it has taken about 700 images that; given their extraordinary size (more than 600 km. wide), cover about 70 million square km. In order to control the Deimos satellite, we own a Control Centre with a high gain 5,5 mt. diameter antenna in the Technological Park of Boecillo (Valladolid). In order to download the images, we also own an additional antenna in the Norwegian islands of Svalbard, which provides communication with the satellite almost every orbit. Deimos-1 has been declared “Contributing Mission” by GMES, and it is in charge, during 2010 of covering the African forest masses for European Union projects. This job is carried out in coordination with other DMC satellites. Likewise, the system is also qualified as “Third Party Mission” by the ESA for the Agency´s scientific projects, and, in this context, it is delivering coverage of 11 million square km to them during this year, along with specific area extractions for the United Nation project of tropical forest inventory. Likewise, DEIMOS have also begun covering specific areas of Spain on a weekly basis in order to monitor crops and irrigation, as well as several European areas for precision agriculture. This high quality frequent coverage system is very unique, therefore, it has already attracted many clients to Spain and other countries that have image supply contracts signed or that offer complete service on a regular basis. SMOS is generating the first images with the MIRAS instrument already calibrated, drawing maps of the ‘brightness temperature’ of the Earth’s surface which give clear information about global changes in soil moisture and ocean salinity. These images require of a significant post processing work with special algorithms to generate the final data. The main problem was to achieve a stable overall performance of the instrument in orbit by tuning its calibration mode. The instrument receivers must be periodically calibrated to correct the effects of temperature and aging (amongst other parameters). For example, in August 2010, a global map was first generated by combining the measurements of soil moisture and ocean salinity acquired. The results of SMOS offer a wide range of studying possibilities. For example, this image was gotten superimposing a shot captured when the SMOS instrument was flying over South America on a map of Google Earth. It uses the average brightness temperature collected by SMOS to show the extent of the Amazon rainforest. The shield effect caused by the density of vegetation produces a higher brightness temperature. The Amazon River is clearly visible in the image as an area with a lower brightness temperature. (© SMOS-BEC). SMOS maps proved to be very useful in the recent floods in Australia. The Meteorology Office warned that the Queensland coast could have flash floods due to Cyclone Yasi producing up to 150 mm of rain. However, the SMOS satellite imaIn over a year of life of the SMOS sa- ges showed that actually the floods were unlikely tellite orbiting the Earth, its perfor- to occur on the coast. The information on soil moisture was essential to predict the areas most likely to flood, because the soil is saturated with water and it will not absorb more water, therefore increasing the likelihood of flooding. Also, in areas where soils are drier, as the coastal communities of Cardwell and Innisfall, south of Cairns, it could be predicted that they would be affected but without floods, as it was. La prensa opina The press opinion On December 21st, 2010, there was held the closing ceremony of the Madrid Presidency of the Community of Ariane Cities (CVA), a companies association working for Ariane in the cities where it is present. This event has made the Spanish capital to be the focus of outreach activities related to space during 2010. The event was held at the School of Advanced Aeronautical Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. The presidential table was formed by the director of the School of Advanced Aeronautical Engineering, Miguel Ángel Gómez Tierno; the Institutional Relations Director of EADS CASA Espacio, Gonzalo Galipienso; the Communication Department Director of the European Space Agency, Fernando Doblas; the Vice Chancellor for Information and Network Services Technologies, José Manuel Perales, and the General Director for International Relations of the Madrid City Hall, Fernando Delage. Perhaps the most endearing moment of the act was the intervention of the astronauts before hundreds of high school students. The Spanish astronaut Pedro Duque and the French astronaut Jean Francois Clervoy, explained with videos and pictures how to live and work in space, the challenge of weightlessness and the importance of teamwork, responding to questions from students. Please note that the space sector is of great importance for the city of Madrid, as it accounts for between 80% and 90% of the activity of the Spanish space sector, and this presidency was aimed to be an expression of support to it. All participants agreed on the success of Madrid’s presidency in the CVA, which through all the space-related activities organized during the last year, has managed to convey the idea that: investing in space is to invest in the future. On April 8th, 2010, the CryoSat 2 satellite of the ESA was successfully launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome, at Kazakhstan, by a Russian Dnerp rocket. CryoSat will remain in orbit for three years to study the evolution of the ice on our planet and globally monitoring any changes in its thickness. The mission will send data on the ice thickness variation rate, with a maximum accuracy of 1 cm. This study will give conclusive data on the decreasing rate of the ice covering the planet. In order to overcome all the challenges presented by measuring the ice thickness, CryoSat integrates the sophisticated radar known as SIRAL, combining classical altimetry with Synthetic Aperture and interferometry (Synthetic Aperture Radar, SAR). This radar is based upon the results given by instruments developed for ERS and Envisat, though incorporating significant improvements developed to overcome the intrinsic difficulties involved in measuring the planet’s ice coverage. Spain has significantly contributed to this mission, with four companies from Proespacio cooperating to the initial success of the mission and developing the mission planning and monitoring, the mission control center, the antenna in X band to download data, and the communications subsystem in S band for Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TTC). The implementation of communications satellites represents a great revolution for society, as they enable citizens’ access to the new technologies and to the globalization of society. Could you give us your opinion on how our Armed Forces can benefit from this technology? Today, for the Armed Forces (AF’s) it is essential to have a global strategic communications system running 24 hours a day. To that end, the use of communications satellites is a must. In this sense, the AF’s take advantage from the rapid development experienced by this sector’s technology, through a continuous effort to revamp their communications. However, opposite to the civil systems, satellite networks bearing strategic communications have specific characteristics for which stricter requirements are needed, from both the operative point of view (like security, Boletín informativo para profesionales y empresas del sector espacial www.proespacio.org de servicios (comunicaciones de voz y datos seguras, inmunidad a interferencias que obstaculicen la comunicación, nuevos servicios demandados como telemedicina, etc). Terminal SOTM / SOTM terminal. Space magazine for professional and companies of the space sector flexibility, mobility, reliability, easiness of maintenance) and the services point of view (secure voice and data communications, immunity to interferences that difficult communications, new services’ demands like telemedicine, etc.). In this sense, the communications satellites, which are present at the AF’s since the 90’s, have provided various fundamental advantages: the ability to efficiently exert the command and control function (for security and defense, in peacekeeping and humanitarian help missions, etc.), speed of deployment in areas lacking of infrastructures, easiness of movement for our armies, provision of services to enhance the welfare and the morale of our armed forces, etc. For all these reasons, it can be said that the Armed Forces not only use the space technology needed to establish strategic communications both inside and outside the national territory, but also that they actively contribute to the technological development of the Spanish space industry with their modernization. 2 In some instances, the communications satellites are the only solution to securely communicate with our troops deployed in areas with poorly developed or non-existing telecommunication infrastructures. Could you give us any examples of this situation with the troops deployed in military operations areas? Indeed, a fundamental pillar for the strategic communications of the operations currently carried out by our troops beyond our frontiers is the satellite. That is the case of operations areas which are far away from national or allied territories, faroff from each other, or without civil infrastructures to implement a communications network. Currently, and without exception, there are enough satellites for all of our troops’ missions abroad to guarantee the access both to the command and control functions and the welfare and morale services for the forces deployed. A clear example could be the implementation of different satellite terminals in Afghanistan and Lebanon, including the SOTM (Satcom On The Move), providing our troops with satellite communications while the vehicle is on the move, the portable manpack DAMA terminals that provide capacity through access on demand to low speed voice and data communications, or the TLB-50 terminals for higher volumes of voice and data traffic. Another example could be the frigate deployment on the Indian Ocean during the Atalanta mission against piracy, and a more recent example is the mission carried out in Haiti due to the earthquake of last January. 3 The new secure communications satellite system based on the HISDESAT (Spainsat and Xtar-Eur) system has been working for 5 years. Thanks to the current positions of the satellites, there is a vast overlapping area in the region of our main interest, giving us redundancy in case of failure of any of the satellites, apart from capacity. Therefore, currently the coverage is not a problem either. For the operations, at least in my opinion, the best thing about Spainsat and Xtar-Eur satellites is their spectacular surface power density that allows operating with very small antennas (submarines, manpacks, SOTM). te tener una importante zona de solape en nuestra principal zona de interés, proporcionándonos además de capacidad, redundancia en caso de cualquier contratiempo en alguno de los satélites. Space magazine for professional and companies of the space sector 5 The needs of satellite communications are substantially growing at all usage levels. Do you observe the same growing on the demand of these capacities within the Defense Department? Yes, of course. The SECOMSAT Program, which channels the investments of the Defense Department on satellite communications terminals, has seen how the needs of the Armies have experienced an important increase during the last years. A clear example is the role that this type of communications and terminals plays in the AF’s missions abroad. We cannot forget the possibilities offered by satellite communications to the Navy ships during operations and crossings, where it is difficult to find another media offering the characteristics of availability, bandwidth, security, etc., offered by the satellites. The same applies to out-of-area operations where there is very poor or non-existing infrastructure. The operations have an increasingly higher technological component. Communications are demanded with an increasingly higher bandwidth, which means that it is necessary to have more capacity for both the terminals and the satellites. At CIS Division, we are continuously working to satisfy the new users’ needs, in a rational way and according to the available resources. There is no doubt that satellites have a promising future in the area of Defense. 6 Could you mention any innovations related to ground terminals? Perhaps, the biggest innovation in satellite terminals during the last years had been the SOTM (Satcom On The Move) Terminals, or satellite terminals for communications on the move: the AF’s have made a strong bet on those terminals, which are assembled in vehicles like RG-31, LMV, Piraña, etc. However, as angular accelerations limit the size of the antenna, and therefore the bandwidth, we are working on the operational requirements for a multicarrier station “Satcom At The Quick Halt” (SATH). The main feature is that the commissioning of the terminal is made automatically in a short time and, in principal, only during the time needed for the communication. For the next years, the design of small size manpack terminals is being studied, as well as the evolution of the current MANPACK-DAMA network and even terminals in Ka band, which will be used to simultaneously broadcast information to several users. At the Quick Halt (SATH)”. 14 InfoEspacio 20 Regarding naval terminals, it is worth noting the satellite terminals for submarines, even though it is not strictly an innovation. The S-70 Series submarines are being equipped with satellite terminals, something that is also being considered for the next S-80 Series, what will give them a noticeable capacity. 7 The SPAINSAT satellite has a new technology on-board for electronically reconfigurable antennas. Could you mention any advantages of this integration and the results obtained so far? The SPAINSAT satellite has a reconfigurable antenna (IRMA) fully developed by the Spanish industry, INTA and CASA, which is a reason to be proud. The main advantage of IRMA is that it makes the satellite more robust against malicious interferences caused by any user who potentially wanted to leave our communications out of service. The IRMA antenna is able to geographically locate the interference and to disable it. To that end, it modifies its radiation diagram until the interference does not affect the satellite, making it possible for the user to keep using the service normally. From an operative point of view, this type of antennas increases the flexibility of the satellite link, allowing, for instance, the beams reconfiguration from Docking Stations. Besides, a very important factor is that this type of antennas offers an added value of protection against potential communications disturbances and in electronic war situations. Otherwise, the satellite communications would become useless and so would the whole communications system. 8 As users of satellite communication services and knowing the future needs, which technological innovations do you consider necessary to satisfy your future needs? Where do you think the communication satellite industry should focus to? Here we have to differentiate between the military communication satellites and other communication satellites, which I am not the right person to speak of. Currently the microwave telecom signals received from up-link antenna are down-converted to IF (and then up-converted to the down-link antenna) thought different stages. The number of RF converted stages is higher for higher RF frequencies, being 3 stages a typical configuration for Ka band frequencies. Identical system functionality is obtained by using optical frequency conversion, which allows in only one conversion stage downconvert from 60 GHz to baseband. Last February, the American company in which HISDESAT has a participation, XTAR, through two of the contractors of the US Defense Department, ARTEL and DRS, has gained two contracts valued in several million dollars, to deliver more than 200 MHz of satellite services in X Band for different agencies of the North American government. In every case, XTAR acts as subcontractor to deliver the satellite capacity in X band. The two contracts have been awarded by the Defense Information System Agency (DISA), by means of an international open tendering, although limited to the three main contractors shortlisted in the contractual agreement used by the DISA to purchase satellite communication capacities. In this case, the Xtar-Eur satellite will be used for the satellite services, which like the SPAINSAT, is exclusively reserved for governmental applications. If all the options were exerted, the sum corresponding to the two contracts would exceed 20 million dollars and the duration could be of two years. These two new contracts have been signed mainly thanks to the consolidation reached by both XTar LLC and Hisdesat within the North American government as suppliers for satellite secure communications services in the military X and Ka bands, after five years of serving the different departments and agencies of the Government. The achievement of these two new and important contracts has been possible thanks to the excellent coverage and the high power and flexibility of the Hisdesat and Xtar LLC, SPAINSAT and Xtar-Eur satellites, together with a services offering appropriate to the demanding requirements of the North American Government. Along with the existing contracts with the Defense Department, the State Department and several Governmental agencies, with these new contracts the contracting volume amounts to over 35 million dollars in EE.UU. The MPO will study the surface and the inner composition of the planet, and the MMO will study its magnetosphere. During the journey to Mercury, both probes will be coupled to the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM). This module has two propulsion systems: a chemical one, to reach the lunar gravitational attraction zone, and the other one is a high thrust ion propulsion system specifically to reach Mercury. Besides ion propulsion, the probe will need a complex combination of orbital maneuvers to be firstly accelerated and later slowed down as it approaches the Sun. EADS Astrium Crisa is importantly participating in the ion propulsion system, the power subsystem and two of the instruments. The first of these equipments is the Power Processing Unit (PPU) of the Solar Electrical Power System. The PPU units, two redundant units of big size and a mass of 46 kg. will be mounted in the MTM. This equipment is autonomously in charge of conditioning and controlling the power of the ion propulsion system. This system is an evolution of the system developed by QinetiQ (UK), EADS Astrium GmbH and EADS Astrium Crisa, which is currently using the GOCE satellite with great success. The main contractor is EADS Astrium UK. The second equipment under development is the Power Conditioning and Distribution Unit (PCDU) of the MOP module. This unit distributes the electrical power to the platform and the instruments acquired by the MMO module during the journey, and from the solar panels once the MOP is in orbit. Other equipment is the power supply unit for the MIXS (Mercury Imaging X-ray Spectrometer) instrument. This project is led by the Astrobiology Center (INTA-CAB). At the end of 2009, Antonio Tajani, the European Commission’s Vice-President for Transport, announced the epoch-making official start of operations by EGNOS, meaning that it is now accessible to all users equipped with EGNOS receivers. Optical Beam-forming for 8 links. Future plans of ESA and other space agencies foresee an increment in the number of missions and more available data rate (both uplink and downlink), an increase in the number of simultaneous links and increased availability of the ground segment. Not only performance is the main design driver of new architectures but cost is also a key driver. It has been demonstrated throughout the years that large dishes have a huge cost in terms of operating and maintenance. This justify to move forward innovative solutions for future ground space stations such as array antennas with beam-forming capabilities. The solution based on distributed antennae, that has already been successfully implemented for radiotelescopes such as ALMA, needs more new photonics solutions for RF signals distribution and processing. DAS count with the experience gained in a previous programs, such as the demonstrator of an optical beam-forming for future Deep Space Stations or the supply of equipments for ESO in ALMA. Thank to that DAS is now involved with ESA in the analysis and trade-off of potential photonics solutions for future space stations. Mission Planning Contract Awarding Historically, in the context of ESA satellite missions, the development of mission planning software for ESOC has been addressed in a mission per mission basis without a clear strategy to take advantage of previous development efforts carried out by other missions. This situation derives into higher development and maintenance costs, as well as it complicates the possibilities to provide more sophisticated planning capabilities due to the difficulties that current systems present to extend their function, due to the lack of standardizations, no clear mechanisms to extend the system, etc. In order to address these concerns, DEIMOS is currently developing the Mission Planning System Framework (MPSF) for ESOC. This system is designed to address those problems providing a component-based semi-complete application framework that will facilitate the development of mission planning software for the various types of missions operated by ESA. The MPSF is soon to become the kernel in upon which future ESA mission planning software will be implemented. As part of the MPSF development, DEIMOS has invested an important effort working closely to the future users to try to unify the different views, approaches and terminologies used in the context of existing systems but using modern development approaches that will ease the customisation of the system for future missions. business empresa Históricamente en el contexto de las misiones de la ESA, el desarrollo de software para la planificación de misiones de ESOC ha sido afrontado para cada misión por separado, sin una estrategia clara que aprovechase el esfuerzo invertido en desarrollos previos para otras misiones.
