It also has important tourist attractions in all its municipalities. They can offer a taste of the local gastronomy, accommodation services and, for those who prefer the outdoors, numerous activities in nature. This guidebook is intended to be a useful tool to learn about all the resources with natural, touristic, cultural and recreational interest in all the municipalities that make up the Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya. Welcome to the true gem of the Community of Madrid… VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 3 VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 4 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya Location Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya is located in one of the most remarkable spots in Madrid’s northern mountain range (Sierra Norte). Grouped around the Lozoya river are numerous villages, including Rascafría, Oteruelo del Valle, Alameda del Valle, Pinilla del Valle, Lozoya, Garganta de los Montes and El Cuadrón. The valley is located only 80 km from the capital. M-604 is the road that goes trough it and can be reached via the A1 highway by taking the exit at kilometer 69. From the west, you can access to the valley from Madrid or from Segovia along the Navacerrada mountain pass (M-601). Other ways to access the villages are by secondary roads where you can enjoy the landscape: M-611, along the La Morcuera mountain pass, from Miraflores de la Sierra; M-637, along the Navafría mountain pass, from Segovia to Lozoya. It shows us different cultural resources related to these activities: “potros de herrar” (old cattle crushes for shoeing animals), watering places for cattle, shepherd’s cabins, old mills…In addition to these things, we can find other cultural monuments like ancient churches, chapels and bridges that make this place an ideal one to get to know. The different municipalities that compose the group of villages invite us to go for a walk, and to see in their streets, some spots with special interest for visitors. The Peñalara Natural Park and the ZEPA (special protected area for birds) are a real treasure in this protected natural area in the Community of Madrid, and great examples of the natural resources of the valley. Peñalara Natural Park: With an area of 768 hectares, Peñalara Natural Park was declared a natural site of national interest in 1930, and later, the Community of Madrid declared the area a natural park. Peñalara is the highest mountain peak in the Guadarrama mountain range. Due to the glacial action in the Quaternary period you can admire its alpine characteristics, such as cirques, river basins, and glacial morphology. These features are found exclusively in the centre of Spain, and that is why it is a special spot for experienced and non-experienced hikers, researches and the general public. It also offers a large variety of animal species and great biodiversity. 10 ZEPA (in the upper Lozoya) It is a special protected area for birds that covers the upper Lozoya valley (ES0000057), with an area of 7.866 hectares Black vultures (over 60 pairs) and the Spanish Imperial Eagle are the most representative species in the area. In addition, it has not been well studied yet. This site is in a limestone terrain and was originated from a sea platform 65 million years ago. Water erosion has been making holes in the rock for thousands of years and hundreds of animal remains have been deposited there. VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 13 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya Outdoor activities The best way to explore Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya and their environment is to go out for a walk around all their natural surroundings. Enjoy the walking or cycling routes. Setting out to conquer the Lozoya Valley villages: The nature trail This trail runs along the municipalities that compose Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya, offering travelers the possibility to get to know the southern slopes of the Guadarrama mountain range, and a valley full of shrines hidden among hundredyear-old trees, where the Lozoya river is constantly present. The nature trail starts at the bridge “Puente del Perdón” in front of the Monastery “Santa María del Paular”, at kilometer 27.6 (M-604), in Rascafría. It is advisable to visit the Monastery and also the Arboretum “Giner de los Ríos”, a small botanical garden that includes several species of exotic trees. After crossing the bridge, the trail goes up into a quiet poplar grove where you can enjoy the peace of the valley. As you continue, you arrive at the ruins of an old school and you can pass through the door. If you keep walking straight among farmlands and meadows, you will arrive in Rascafría. Once you get there, crossing the “Artiñuelo” river and continuing parallel along the “Cascajales” avenue, you can make a short trip around the urban area. Then the trail crosses the road (M-611) of the “Morcuera” mountain pass, leaving behind the 13 VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 14 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya cemetery and leading you to Oteruelo del Valle via a cattle trail that surrounds the housing development “Los Grifos” and continues to the medieval bridge “Matafrailes”. You can take “Real” street, in Oteruelo del Valle, and leave a rest area behind you. After crossing the Lozoya river you will follow a fence that guides you to a small bridge with a cattle grid. Then you will continue to Alameda del Valle and finally to Pinilla del Valle. On the way you can also see the heliport and the park. The trail goes along Pinilla via “Embalse” street, and at this point, you can enjoy the first views of the Pinilla reservoir, which is next to one of the three Pleistocene sites of the municipality. The tour continues towards the town hall, which is located in the main square and leads you to the Church of “San Miguel Arcángel”, which is worth a visit. There is a path behind the church that goes to the meadow. Once you leave Pinilla, you will notice that the trail moves away from the water and returns to the reservoir again, following the river bank to Lozoya, and passing through a cozy oak tree-lined path. 14 The trail goes along the Pinilla reservoir, and then takes a short, asphalted stretch that gives access to the dam’s installations. This path goes from the reservoir to the bridge “Congosto” or “Canto”, which dates from Roman times and let you cross the river at a point where the waters run abundantly, especially when the dam is open. VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 15 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya The trail begins to slope upwards without being excessive while bordering the Lozoya river. After carefully crossing the M-629, the path continues to Garganta de los Montes. Thanks to the elevation you can contemplate from here the “Riosequillo” reservoir. Before arriving in Garganta de los Montes, the traveler has two different options: continue straight to El Cuadrón or go to visit the shrine of Los Prados. After passing Garganta de los Montes and going uphill, you can see how the trees turn into typical scrubland of the high mountain areas. The nature trail ends at the Tourist Information Centre “El Cuadrón”. VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 16 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya OTHER WALKING ROUTES YOU CAN TAKE FROM THE NATURE TRAIL: Five different or additional routes can be made from this main trail with the Lozoya river constantly present, and with a rich biodiversity, including threatened species such as the Spanish imperial eagle or the Graellsia (a unique moth in the world). In addition, you will learn about the architecture of the area, and the chapels of the different villages, located in the countryside. Route: “Los Batanes” This trail takes its name due to the land it goes across. It starts at the M-604, 100 meters away from Rascafría towards the Monastery “Santa María de El Paular”. The trail runs parallel to the road and makes an obligatory stop at the Monastery, and why not, at the Arboretum “Giner de los Ríos”. The route continues crossing the bridge “Puente del Perdón”, built in the 18th century, and then goes deep into a poplar grove. Arriving at the ruins of an old school, you have to pass through the door. You can return to the starting point crossing the Lozoya river and taking the trail parallel to M-604, or continue through farmlands and meadows towards Rascafría. When you have returned to the village again, you have to cross the “Artiñuelo” river and continue parallel along the “Cascajales” avenue. 16 You will arrive at a traffic circle with a lamppost in the middle and you can make a short trip around the urban area. The route crosses M-611 of the “Morcuera” mountain pass, leaving behind the cemetery and leading you to Oteruelo del Valle. VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 17 Route: The Shrine of “Santa Ana” This second route complements the former. This path starts at the end of “Real” street, in Oteruelo del Valle. After passing a rest area and crossing the Lozoya river, if you continue along a cattle run and then cross a small bridge with a cattle grid, you will arrive at a beautiful oak grove. A few kilometers away, the trail gets narrower and turns into a path that leads you around the “Santa Ana” river and to the area where the shrine, with the same name, is located. Once here you can visit the shrine and enjoy the mountain landscapes. At this point you can see a cross that honors the shepherds. The path now gets wider and leads you to Alameda del Valle, passing the heliport and the park. A little further ahead you find Pinilla del Valle, where the third part of this nature trail starts. 17 VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 18 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya Route: The Shrine of “Concepción” This route leaves Pinilla del Valle. You can’t get lost because it runs parallel to the secondary road (M-604). Just before the shrine, it returns by a circular stretch to the starting point, and then to the nature trail towards the next village: Lozoya. As you arrive to Pinilla del Valle, you have to turn to the first street on the left, passing a cattle drinking trough. After moving in the direction of M-604, you will find a path that runs parallel to the secondary road and leads you to the shrine of “La Concepción”. If you want to return to the main trail and go to Lozoya, you have to walk from here to “Embalse” street. The nature trail runs around Pinilla on that street. VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 19 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya Route: The Shrine of “Fuensanta” Before entering Lozoya, you can take this fourth route that consists of a trail that returns via same route. You have to arrive in the village and get to the Church of San Salvador, then take a street that has an electricity pylon and offers beautiful views while you are leaving Lozoya. The shrine of Fuensanta was built on a hollow, sheltered from cold winds of winter and the harsh sun of summer. Here you can drink the clearest and most famous waters from the mountains of Madrid. You can return along the same route, taking again the main trail and walking next to the reservoir, without entering the town. Then, you can take a short, asphalted stretch that gives access to the dam’s installations. This path goes from the reservoir to the bridge “Congosto” or “Canto” and finally to Garganta de los Montes. Before arriving in Garganta de los Montes you can continue the route directly to El Cuadrón or go to visit the Shrine of Los Prados, which is the fifth and last branch of the nature trail. Route: The Shrine of “Los Prados” In Garganta de los Montes the trail continues south until arriving at a cattle grid. Here, you have to follow the path that goes along a wooden fence and leads you to the shrine. There are some tables where you can have a rest comfortably. The main route returns to Garganta de los Montes and goes to the tourist Office “El Cuadrón”, where the nature trail finally finishes. 19 VALLE DEL LOZOYA int ingles:Maquetación 1 27/03/2011 21:41 Página 20 Mancomunidad Valle del Lozoya Nature and environmental centers Oteruelo del Valle Lozoya Valley has two of the eleven environmental education centers of the Community of Madrid.
