Living in a place in below zero temperatures
changes us; it definitely affects the way one approaches
the day. Mothers have to bundle up the kids with three
layers of clothing, gloves a couple of hats three pairs of
socks; people have to go out early to de-ice the windows
of the car; we have to watch more closely where we
(more slowly) walk so that we won’t slip and fall; we stay
inside more than usual since it is no fun to get blasted in
the face with artic-type air. You get the picture. We
make adjustments to the cold in order to continue to live
life. We humans are amazing in the way we adapt to the
environment. The bodies of Eskimos who live in the upper regions of Alaska and people who live in the Sahara
Desert adjust to the extreme cold and hot climates.
It is not only with the weather that we can
change, we adjust because of circumstances and surprises in life that come our way. Losing a job, a new
baby, an old friend who just shows up out of the blue, a
broken boiler, jury duty are examples of experiences that
need our attention in some form or fashion—we adjust.
The death of a loved one is probably the most
significant event that one experiences in life. Some
deaths can be a relief to loved ones such as with long
and pain-filled illnesses. The suffering of the loved one
can spiritually and emotionally challenge family and
friends. Some can cry out to God with all their heart,
“Why?” When a loved one dies, shock can be a consequence; these surprise circumstances of death can extremely unsettle family and friends. We all react to death
in different ways.
In walking with family members through their bereavement, one can hear the word “closure”. It is a wellintentioned idea that says that we can “close” off the effects of the loved one’s death and then move on with our
lives. I do not believe in “closure” in that sense. I think
that we live through the difficulties of death-- all the tears,
sadness, guilt and confusion-- and then we eventually get
to the point that we can live with it. It is then that we can
get back on the path of life and begin to function well
again. But we are changed people in the process.
In our faith, we believe that it is the Holy Spirit
who subtly guides us through these changes—even when
we are not aware of it. The gentle help of the Spirit
comes through all sorts of means: a phone call from a
friend, a visit from a neighbor, and inspiring quote from
personal reading, through prayer. St Paul in his letter to
the Romans captures this: “…we hope for what we do
not see, we wait with endurance. In the same way, the
Spirit too comes to the aid of our weakness…the one who
searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit,
because it intercedes for the holy ones according to
God’s will”
So just as our bodies can adjust through the
weather conditions, so we can adjust through life’s unpredictable twists and turns with God’s help. The Holy Spirit
will always be with us and present to give us the necessary graces to change—no matter what the challenge
is. That is the unconditional love of God offered to us.

Vivir en un lugar donde la temperatura es bajo cero nos
cambia; definitivamente afecta la manera en que uno enfrenta el
día. Las mamas tienen que arropar a los niños con tres capas de
ropa, guantes y un par de gorros tres pares de calcetines; las personas tienen que salir temprano para descongelar las ventanas de
los carros; tenemos que estar más atentos a donde vamos
(movernos más despacio) caminar para no resbalar; nos mantenemos adentro por más tiempo ya que no es muy divertido recibir una ráfaga de viento frio en la cara. Hacemos ajustes en el
frio para poder continuar viviendo la vida. Nosotros los humanos somos asombrosos en que podemos adaptarnos al ambiente.
Los cuerpos de los esquimales que viven en la región de Alaska y
la gente que viven en el Desierto de Sahara se ajustan a estos
extremos climas de calor y frio.
No solo cambiamos con la temperatura, nos ajustamos
por motivos de circunstancias y sorpresas que la vida nos pone
en el camino. Perder un trabajo, un nuevo bebe, un viejo amigo
que se aparece de repente, cuando se rompe el boiler del agua,
cuando nos mandan llamar a ser parte del jurado, son algunos
ejemplos de experiencias que necesitan nuestra atención de alguna manera o forma – nos ajustamos.
La muerte de algún ser querido es probablemente una
de las experiencias más significativo en nuestra vida. La muerte
a veces trae descanso a los seres queridos cuando por motivos de
enfermedad hay mucho dolor por un largo tiempo. El sufrimiento de los seres queridos es un desafío emocional y espiritual
para la familia y amigos. Algunos pueden gritar a Dios con todo
su corazón “¿Porque?” Cuando un ser querido muere, la consecuencia puede ser estar en estado de shock; esta sorpresa de
muerte repentina puede perturbar enormemente a la familia y
amigos. Todos reaccionamos a la muerte en diferentes maneras.
Al unirse con los familiares en su duelo, uno puede escuchar la
palabra “se terminó”. Es una idea bien intencionada al decir
que podemos dar por “terminado” todo, el efecto de la muerte
de nuestro ser querido y continuar con nuestras vidas. Yo no
creo en el “final” en ese sentido. Yo creo que vivimos por medio
de las dificultades de la muerte – todas las lágrimas, tristeza, culpabilidad y confusión – y hasta entonces eventualmente podemos llegar a ese punto en que podemos vivir. Es entonces que
podemos regresar al camino y comenzar a funcionar bien nuevamente. Pero ya somos personas diferentes en el proceso.
En nuestra fe, creemos que es el Espíritu Santo suavemente nos guía por estos cambios – aunque cuando no estamos
al tanto de ello. La ayuda del Espíritu llega en diferentes formas:
una llamada telefónica de un amigo, una visita del vecino, una
oración de un personaje, por medio de la oración. San Pablo en
la carta a los Romanos capturo esto: “…esperamos lo que no
vemos, aguardamos con paciencia. De ese modo el Espíritu nos
viene a socorrer en nuestra debilidad….el que sondea los corazones sabe que pretende el Espíritu cuando suplica por los consagrados de acuerdo con la voluntad de Dios.”
Así como nuestros cuerpos se ajustan a las condiciones
de las temperaturas, de igual manera nosotros podemos ajustarnos a las irregularidades de la vida con la ayuda de Dios. El Espíritu Santo siempre estará con nosotros presente para darnos las
gracias necesarias para cambiar – no importa cuál sea el desafío.
Este es el amor incondicional que Dios nos ofrece.
