CURLING IS BECOMING A FASHIONABLE SPORT. ITS CURRENT BOOM AND EXPANSION HAS ALREADY REACHED SPAIN. Pese a que en nuestro país aún sea casi desconocido, en sólo seis años se han creado 18 clubes repartidos por distintas localidades, siendo el Jaggers Curling Club de Madrid el actual campeón de España, en 2004, y el Nuestros grandparents look in amazement at this new sport called curling and possibly muse on what has become of the traditional game of bowls that they played with their friends in the open air. They stand aghast as people slide up and down the ice rink launching stones weighing 20 kilos each in a curious adaptation of a game of long standing in Spain. But times change and this new sport is already a Winter Olympic event followed by thousands, as well as a centuries-old tradition. Despite being practically unheard of in this country, in only six years 18 clubs have been set up in different towns, with the Jaggers Curling Club from Madrid currently holding the title of Spanish Champion for 2004 and the Club de Curling Igualada in Barcelona being the first to have registered with the Our 50 51 PA11EnForma-E 29/11/04 16:35 Página 4 EN FORMA SPORT 4 Club de Curling Igualada de Barcelona el primer equipo inscrito en la Federación Española de Deportes de Invierno, a la que pertenecen. While the origins of bowls goes back to the 6th century B.C., the history of curling is not as clear. Its birth seems to have been in the 16th century, in Scotland, both because of an engraved stone found at Perth in the region of Stirling and also because of two oil paintings by Pieter Brueghel dated 1565 as well as a document written in Latin by a Scots notary, John McQuhin, in 1540, describing a competition held at the time. In the 20th century it was an exhibition sport at four of the Winter Olympics, before becoming an official event at Nagano (Japan) in 1998. The first question asked at the first sight of a curling match is: what are those people doing sweeping an ice rink? And this question is inevitable for the sport is only ever seen in Spain when the Winter Olympics are broadcast on local television or else you tune in to the Eurosport satellite channel. This game is very traditional in northern latitudes and attracts spectacular audiences in countries like Sweden, Norway, Canada and of course Scotland. In fact, these ice-sweepers only come into play after another player has slid a stone weighing 20 kilos down the ice to try to reach as close as possible to the centre of the target or house, 28 metres away from the tee or starting line. Using their brooms, the sweepers clean the ice to create a film of water so that the stone can slide faster and straighter to its destination. If the stone still has a long way to go, you have to brush harder; otherwise, you don’t in case it slides out of the other side of the house. Curling, step by step 1 Of the four players in each team, the one ‘throwing’ the stone is the star at the start of the game. To release the stone effectively, it is necessary to pull your whole body back while your feet are pushing against the starting blocks (just like in athletics). The leg on the other side from the arm holding the stone pushes to back to provide the thrust while the other leg is bent to slide forward over the ice. As the thrower is sliding over the ice, two of his or her team-mates get ready to accompany the stone on its journey. IN SWEDEN, CANADA AND SCOTLAND, THE CURLING DRAWS SPECTACULAR AUDIENCES. Once all of the stones have been thrown, those closest to the centre of the target are the ones counted for the score, with all those lying behind the opponents’ nearest stone being discarded. Curling teams comprise four players who take turns to slide a total of 16 stones. It is one of the most genteel of sports, with any possible disputes being resolved by the players themselves, the umpire only being called in very rarely, when the two teams cannot reach agreement. One of the most peculiar characteristics of curling is that it can be practised by people of any age and physical condition, as it is more a game of strategy than one of brute strength. As a result, there are teams made up of members from one family or mixed, whereas official championships and the Olympic Games distinguish between the men’s and women’s categories, although there is no age limit. 2 The thrower has to push the stone at the same time as it is released before reaching the line limiting the throw area, so that the stone comes as close as possible to the target at the other end. This is when the two sweepers come into play, scraping their brooms over the wet ice. 3 Depending on the force and speed of the stone, the sweepers have to work hard to create a smooth film so that a short throw goes far enough to reach the target. On the other hand, if the stone seems to have enough speed and force behind it, the sweeping is much more subdued. 1 4 At the end of the lane stands the team captain or ‘skip’, carefully observing the state of play. The goal is to give the appropriate orders to the other members of the team so that any necessary sweeping is efficiently carried out to guide the stone into the centre of the ‘house’. The captain may also help in the sweeping, if necessary. The only special item needed is the slider, a rubber sole placed on the underside of your footwear to make it easier to slide on the ice. In order to practice this sport here in Spain, the climate means that it can only be played indoors, at an ice club of some sort, but in Scandinavian countries it is very common for curling to be played in the open air, using rinks specially prepared for ice sports or on frozen lakes.
